At pick #133 in the 4th round, the Cleveland Indians have selected left-handed pitcher Adam Scott out of Wofford College.

Born: 10/10/95 — Height: 6' 4'' — Weight: 220 — Bats: Left — Throws: Left

Jeff Ellis: Scott is a high priority senior which means he won’t he a cheap sign and should likely get near or around six figures with this pick. He put up awesome numbers this year for Wofford with a Walk rate of 1.57, a lot walk rate has become a a requirement for any Indians pick. His strikeout rate was 11.93. Now for the concerns he gave up a lot home runs for a player who seemed to out class most of the talent he was facing. During his time in the Cape he still rarely walked anyone but his strikeout rate was nearly half of what he did during the season. He faced much better competition and he did not do as well. SEEMS TO BE DOING FINE IN ADVANCED A AND DOUBLE AA He is a left with high level performance against weaker competition, I am not shocked by this pick. He might profile best as a reliever going forward so with his age, turns 23 in October, he could be a fast mover.

HIGHLIGHTS

Adam Scott (SP, Akron) - 6.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R/ER, 1 BB, 7 SO - The RubberDucks' southpaw is continuing to impress. The six-foot-four lefty got off to a rocky start upon his first game at the Double-A level where he issued six runs on nine hits. Since then Scott appears to have made a quick adjustment as he has allowed zero runs and given up just 11 hits while striking out 20 batters over his last 18.2 innings of work. It appears that the decision to thrust the former Wofford University pitcher into a starting pitcher role rather than a multi-inning reliever is paying off dividends.

Shao-Ching Chiang (SP, Columbus) - 5.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R/ER, 2 BB, 7 SO - The Clippers' right-hander continues to get stronger after suffering through a challenging start to the season. The Taiwanese native has now allowed two runs or fewer over three of his last four outings. Chiang continues to battle through some command issues as he has now walked a career-best 40 batters through 85.0 innings of work in the International League. The six-foot-zero righty's previous career-high in walks was a total of 33 over 155.1 innings of work in the 2017 season between Lynchburg and Akron.

Cody Morris (SP, Lynchburg) - 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R/ER, 0 BB, 6 SO - The Hillcats' righty enjoyed one of his strongest starts of the season. The six-foot-five right-hander has settled in nice after just three starts as he has allowed just three runs on six hits while striking out 13 batters over his last ten innings of work. The University of South Carolina University product has had no problem throwing strikes in his first professional season. Morris has now thrown at least five innings over his last seven game started between Lake County and Lynchburg.

THE REST

Skeiling Rodriguez (CF, DSL Indians) - 2-5, 2 R, 1 SO - The DSL Indians' center fielder has now tallied nine multi-hit games on the season. Rodriguez has five base hits over his last three games.

Angel Martinez (2B, DSL Indians) - 3-4, 1 RBI - The DSL Indians squad's second baseman has now hit safely in seven of his last ten games. Martinez has collected three-multi hit performances during that span.

Logan Franco (RP, DSL Indians) - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R/ER, 1 BB, 2 SO - Friday's game marked the first appearance for the DSL Indians' righty since his season debut on June 5 that he hurled a scoreless relief appearance. Franco had surrendered nine runs over his last 8.1 innings of work.

Ernie Clement (SS, Akron) - 2-5, 1 R - The RubberDucks' shortstop now owns an eight-game hitting streak. Clement has compiled six multi-hit performances during that stretch.

Mitch Longo (LF, Akron) - 2-4, 1 2B, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SO - The Akron left fielder has a six-game hitting streak. Longo has collected three doubles and one home run during his hitting streak.

Trenton Brooks (RF, Akron) - 2-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 HR, 4 RBI - The RubberDucks' right fielder posted his first multi-RBI game at the Double-A level. Brooks has driven in five runs over his last two games.

Logan Ice (C, Akron) - 2-3, 1 2B, 1 BB - The Akron catcher snapped a three-game hitless streak on Friday. Ice now has has logged three extra-base hits over his last six games.

Jared Robinson (RP, Akron) - 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R/ER, 0 BB, 1 SO - The Akron righty reliever has now now allowed a run over his last six innings of relief work and has struck out nine batters during that stretch. Robinson now holds 1.65 ERA through 16.1 innings at the Double-A level.

Dalbert Siri (RP, Akron) - 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R/ER, 0 BB, 1 SO - The RubberDucks' righty may have figured something out. Siri has not allowed a run over his last 6.2 innings of work and has allowed just three hits and struck out eight batters during that stretch.

Eric Haase (C, Columbus) - 2-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 1 SO - The Clippers' catcher posted his second multi-homer game of the season. Haase is just three home runs shy of matching his career-high in home runs when he swatted 27 home runs in 2017 between Akron and Columbus.

Yu Chang (2B, Columbus) - 2-4, 1 R, 1 SO - The Columbus second baseman tallied his fifth multi-hit game over his last seven contests. Chang has hit safely in eight of his first 11 games coming off the Injured list.

Will Benson (DH, Lynchburg) - 2-5, 1 RBI, 2 SO - The Hillcats' designated hitter came up big on Friday with a walk-off single. Benson has now hit hit safely over two of his last three games.

Hosea Nelson (LF, Lake County) - 2-4, 2 R, 2 2B - The Lake County left fielder continues to be on fire at the plate. Nelson has hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games while hitting three doubles, two triples and four home runs.

Skylar Arias (RP, Lake County) - 2.0 IP, 1 SV, 1 H, 0 R/ER, 0 BB, 4 SO - The Captains' southpaw tossed his second scoreless relief outing in three games. Arias has recorded a high strikeout rate as he has whiffed 48 batters through 39.2 innings of work this season.

Luis Araujo (RP, Lake County) - 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R/ER, 0 BB, 1 SO - It wasn't since June 21 that the Captains' right-handed reliever hurled a scoreless relief outing. Araujo had surrendered 11 runs on eight hits over his last 3.1 innings of work.

Luis D. Garcia (SP, AZL Indians Blue) - 5.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R/ER, 1 BB, 2 SO - The AZL Indians Blue's righty has gone five innings in each of his first four starts this season. Garcia is starting to hit a rough patch as he's surrendered seven runs on ten hits over his last ten innings of work.

Julian Escobedo (CF, AZL Indians Blue) - 2-5, 1 R, 2 RBI - The AZL Indians Blue squad's center fielder has now hit safely in nine of his first 11 games. Escobedo has tallied six multi-hit performances thus far.

Jose Tena (3B, AZL Indians Blue) - 2-5, 1 R, 1 3B - The AZL Indians Blue squad's third baseman has now hit safely in six of his first eight games. Tena already has compiled three extra-base hits after recording 13 last season.

Aaron Bracho (2B, AZL Indians Blue) - 2-3, 2 R, 1 3B, 1 HR, 2 BB, 1 SO - The AZL Indians Blue's second baseman mashed his second homer in three games. Bracho recorded his first career game where he recorded more than on extra-base hit.

Wilton Sanchez (RP, AZL Indians Blue) - 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R/ER, 0 BB, 1 SO - The AZL Indians Blue squad's right-handed reliever has spun three scoreless relief appearances over his first four games. Sanchez just allowed two hits over his first 8.2 innings of work.

Joe Naranjo (1B, AZL Indians Red) - 2-4, 2 R, 1 SO - The AZL Indians Red's first baseman has a three-game hitting streak going now. Naranjo has tallied two multi-hit games over his hot streak.

Cesar Idrogo (LF, AZL Indians Red) - 2-4, 1 R, 2 SO - The AZL Indians Red squad's left fielder has now hit safely in two out of his last three games. Idrogo has compiled five base hits over that span.

2108 7th round pick

Jeff Ellis: Cody Morris is a redshirt sophomore from South Carolina who was previously drafted out of high school by the Baltimore Orioles in the 32th round of the 2015 draft. He missed his freshman year after requiring Tommy John surgery. He was moved from the midweek to weekend starter this year and reportedly was up to 96 at points this year. Morris was better a year ago when he had a walk rate under two and a strikeout rate approaching 11. This season he was solid with a walk rate under 3.5 and a home run rate over 9.5. He has been home run prone in school which is my bigger concern. I think he would be given a chance to start with a good fallback as a reliever thanks to his fastball and curveball combo.

Did not pitch last year. WHIP of 1.16

ABOUT MLB DRAFT

With the No. 29 pick in the 2018 Major League draft, the Tribe took catcher Noah Naylor.

There are always great expectations for a first-round pick, no matter where he's selected. I recently had a casual conversation with Tribe president Chris Antonetti. The subject was the draft, and I mentioned that Lonnie Chisenhall was the 29th pick in 2008, the most recent time the Indians drafted in that slot.

"Lonnie is one of the best players picked there," he said. "Only about half even make the majors."

With that in mind, I did some research - looking at all the players picked 29th between 1995-2015.

Here we go:

1. Only nine of 20 selections have even played in the big leagues.

2. Only four have played in at least 100 MLB games. The best is Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright, who has a career 147-84 record and 3.30 ERA. He was picked in 2000.

3. Then comes Joe Panik (drafted 2011), who has made an All-Star team and won a gold glove at second base for the Giants. He has played in 467 games, batting .281 (.716 OPS).

4. Next is Carlos Quentin (drafted 2003), who played in 834 games between 2006-14. He hit 154 HR, batting .251 (.831 OPS). From 2008-12, he averaged 26 HR and 80 RBI for the White Sox. Then his career fell apart because of injuries.

5. Chisenhall (drafted 2008) has played in 668 games. He's a career .265 hitter (.741 OPS) with 63 HR for the Tribe.

6. A fangraphs story reported that only 32 of 55 players drafted between 26-30 from 2000-10 made the majors. By contrast, 48 of 55 players drafted in the top five between 2000-10 reached the bigs.

7. Wainwright made three All-Star teams, Quentin two and Panik has been an All-Star once.

8. If Noah Naylor becomes a regular catcher for the Tribe - or has a big league career of several seasons - he's defying the odds of where he was picked.

9. Who is the best 29th pick in baseball history? According to ESPN, it's George Brett. The Hall of Famer was taken by Kansas City in 1971.

ABOUT TRIBE'S PICKS

1. Naylor was rated the No. 27 prospect in the draft by MLB.com. Baseball America had him at No. 41. The Indians believe the 18-year-old can be an elite hitter from the left side of the plate. He is from the Toronto suburb of Mississauga and played for the Canadian National team.

2. Naylor comes from a baseball family. His brother (Josh Naylor) was the 12th pick in the 2015 draft. Josh is batting .313 (.885 OPS) with 9 HR and 46 RBI for San Antonio, a Class AA farm team for the San Diego Padres.

3. The Indians saw Naylor using wooden bats in competition against some minor league teams in the spring, when he toured with Team Canada. He has some skills behind the plate and the Indians will start him out as a catcher, but he could end up playing somewhere else.

4. The Indians took pitcher Ethan Hankins at No. 35. MLB.com had him ranked as the No. 2 pitching prospect in the draft. He consistently threw in the high 90s. But the high school right-hander had some shoulder problems in the spring, and that scared some teams.

5. The Tribe had Hankins in Cleveland to be examined by their medical people. The 6-foot-6, 215-pounder pitched late in the season for his Forsyth Central High team in Cumming, Georgia. Hankins became a hot prospect in 2017 when he struck out 27 in 12 innings pitching for the Team USA 18-under team in the World Cup.

6. ESPN's Keith Law wrote: "Hankins came into the spring as my No. 1 prospect in the draft. He was seen within the industry as a consensus top-five pick, bringing the best combination of stuff (fastball and curve) and command in the draft class. He left his first start of the season when his velocity suddenly fell off ... missed a month with shoulder tightness ... returned to make a few starts. ... I saw him on April 9. He was OK, but not what he was last summer. Hankins hit 95 mph on his fastball, and showed a bunch of 94 mph ... although the pitch didn't have the same life as last year. The curve has backed up, more of a slow roller 71-75 mph."

7. The Indians know Hankins is a bit of a gamble. They plan to go slowly with him, building up his arm. He's a high school pitcher, and those are often high risk/high reward picks high in the draft.

8. My favorite (purely on paper) is Nick Sandlin, a right-hander from Southern Mississippi. He was a reliever in his first two seasons. He moved into the starting rotation to help his team, and had a stunning 10-0 record and 1.05 ERA. He fanned 144 in 102 innings, walking 18.

9. Sandlin was the No. 67 pick. The Indians will move him to the bullpen. He throws sidearm. He averaged seven innings per start, so the Indians will work him slowly this summer because of his heavy pitch load in college.

10. From Baseball America: "Keep an eye on Sandlin. He could be a quick mover to the majors to help a struggling Indians bullpen."

11. It's unrealistic to look for Sandlin in Cleveland this season. But next year? Who knows? The Tribe took Cody Allen 698th in the 2011 draft. By the middle of the 2012 season, Allen was in the majors. A reliever can advance swiftly through the farm system.

12. An intriguing pick is Cody Morris, a seventh-rounder who is starting for South Carolina in the NCAA playoffs. The right-hander is a sophomore eligible for the draft. That means he could return to school.

13. Morris was the 2014 Maryland High School Player of the Year. But he had Tommy John elbow surgery before enrolling in South Carolina. Despite the surgery, he was a 32nd round pick by Baltimore when he graduated from high school.

14. Morris has an 8-3 record and 3.68 ERA for the Gamecocks, who play a big time schedule. His fastball is in the middle 90s. He was one of 10 players drafted from South Carolina's roster this season.

15. I'll be curious to watch the career of 10th rounder Robert Broom. He pitched for Mercer College in Georgia, a Division I program. He's a sidearmer who had a 10-4 record, 1.71 ERA with 111 strikeouts in 74 innings. He'll also go to the bullpen

Thanks Buck for filling in! I certainly am impressed by Adam Scott's progression.
Maybe we finally develop a LH to go with lots of very good RH starters?

Freeman has not slipped a step since his promotion. Fellow middle IF Ernie Clement has been hitting well and could find his way to Columbus.
Ka'ai Tom's rather unexpected breakout continues; 5 for 11 in his first 3 AAA games; he has learned however that AAA catchers are much better at controlling the running game, he's already been caught 2 times in 3 steal tries.

Holmes got over .200 but couldn't stay at those rarified heights; and previous year's No. 1 pick Benson is struggling in the early going in Lynchburg; hitting a very Benson-like .164 with a pair of homers, a bunch of walks and a large pile of strikeouts.

Daniel Johnson and Nolan Jones each got one AB in the Futures game and was retired.
