Tony transcribe the radio intereview with Tribe farm director Ross Atkins

Indians Farm Director Ross Atkins was with the Double-A Akron team this past week as they traveled to Portland, Maine and had some comments on a few players in the system:

Jerad Head
On Jerad Head: “He does it every year. Every year he is a better player and is creating a case for himself that he is a Major League option. This year he has been nothing short of that. The power numbers are consistently there and he hits for average, though we would like to see him get on base a little bit better. But he is a very good defender in left and right field and has some versatility where he can play first base, third base, and if he had to he could go to second base. He is a really good athlete that has really benefitted from a long minor league career and made the most out of it. He is a much better player than he was six years ago. He is a great person too and one that we pull for and are hopeful that we have another Josh Tomlin story in the system because he has the makeup to have that type of a story.”

On Head’s potential as a big league option: “It is unusual in that it is his persistence in that he has not given up whether it is us not giving him the red carpet to the Major Leagues. These guys can read between the lines and see who is given a better more clear opportunity than others, and we have not made it easy for Jerad. But that has not slowed him down and has not phased him as even when he gets less playing time over the years he still handled that exceptionally well, and when he gets the opportunity he has always capitalized on it. He was integral in the Columbus team winning the championship last year as he and Jason Kipnis were pretty much the driving force on that team. It looks like he is doing it again as he has been the cog in the offense for the entire year and been one of the most consistent players for that team. Hopefully we can improve the plate discipline a little bit as he plays a position where offense is very demanding in a corner outfield spot. If we can get his plate discipline up a little bit it will make him a Major League option.”

Austin Adams
On Austin Adams: “He is really interesting because he is up to 100 MPH, he can spin the ball, and he has a developing changeup. He is extremely athletic as he is a converted shortstop, and he is just now getting a feel for how his delivery translates into effectiveness, which is a hard thing to do. Guys can be effective and consistent with just stuff, but being consistently effective and having consistent command of your stuff is what gives you success in the upper levels and into the Major Leagues. In order to do that you have to have an excellent feel for your delivery and know when it gets off track and know when you are in a groove and find a way to get into that groove. He is just now learning that and I think he has made tremendous progress with [Akron pitching coach] Tony Arnold and [minor league pitching coordinator] Dave Miller this year in finding that delivery. He is finishing stronger than he started, which is always a good sign. Like I said, he is up to 100 MPH with an average to above average breaking ball, so if we can get his fastball consistently down in the zone and if that changeup comes he will be a Major League starting option.”

I don't often post Tony's game recaps since they run on and on and on. But here they are for last night;'s games. I will add the box scores later. I have edited this a little.

Clippers come back to win

The Columbus Clippers came back from a 7-1 deficit on Saturday night to score 10 straight unanswered runs and stun Rochester with an 11-7 win.

After four innings the Clippers were down 7-1 because starter Mitch Talbot struggled to find any consistency. He ended up pitching just 2.0 innings and allowed six runs on six hits, one walk and had one strikeout. Matt Langwell got the win after he went three innings and allowed one run on five hits, no walks and had three strikeouts. Chen Lee followed him with two scoreless innings allowing a hit and walk while striking out four, and then Zach Putnam two scoreless innings allowing a hit, no walks, and had three strikeouts.

The comeback was fueled by a big sixth inning for the Clippers where they struck for six runs. The big blows of the inning was a two-run double by Tim Fedroff and a two-run triple by Chad Huffman. Fedroff finished the night 3-for-5 with two doubles, a walk and five RBI, and Jared Goedert went 5-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and two RBI.

The series continues in Rochester on Sunday evening at 6:05 PM. Joe Martinez is scheduled to start for the Clippers.

Aeros late rally falls short in New Hampshire

The Akron Aeros rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth inning and put runners on first and second in the top of the ninth, but couldn’t overcome a five-run deficit as they lost game two of a three-game series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5-3 Saturday at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

Right-handed pitcher Austin Adams suffered the loss for Akron pitching six innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits, walking three and striking out four.

The Aeros (62-58) scored three times in the top of the eighth inning. Michel Hernandez and Donnie Webb opened the frame with back-to-back singles and Karexon Sanchez reached on a fielding error to load the bases. Ben Copeland followed with an RBI single scoring Hernandez and cutting the New Hampshire lead to 5-1. Webb scored when Juan Diaz grounded into a force out to make it 5-2. Following a pitching change, Sanchez scored when John Drennen grounded into a force out to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Kinston wins in 13 innings

The Kinston Indians defeated the Salem Red Sox in 13 innings by a score of 9-7 on Saturday Night. Kinston used three hits a walk and a sacrifice fly to score two runs and win the game 9-7. The turning point was a wild pitch committed by Salem relief pitcher T.J. Hose, [they have TJ Hose and Kinston has TJ House??] which put the K-Tribe up 8-7 and then a sac fly by Roberto Perez gave the K-Tribe insurance, and ultimately the win.

The Kinston Indians opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Adam Abraham doubled home Tyler Holt who reached on an error. The 1-0 lead was short lived.

Kinston starter Marty Popham didn’t make it out of the third inning. After a double and a walk Aaron Holbert went to the bullpen and summoned the newest Kinston Indian Nick Sarianides. Sarianides yielded a sacrifice fly to Shannon Wilkerson making the score 5-1 in favor of the Salem Red Sox.

The score was 7-1 after four full innings of play.

In the seventh inning the K-Tribe got a little bit closer. Adam Abraham reached on an infield single and then trotted home on the Jeremie Tice 2-run homerun. It was Tice’s 9th homer of the season. The score after seven was 7-3 in favor of Salem.

Meanwhile, Toru Murata entered the game on the mound in the sixth inning with a 13-inning scoreless inning streak. Murata extended his streak by two innings to 15 straight scoreless frames.

Kinston tied the game in the top of the ninth inning. Tice walked to start the inning . Jesus Aguilar then singled Tice to second base. With one out Doug Pickens reached on a fielder’s choice that moved Tice to Third. Pickens then took second base on defensive indifference. Roberto Perez then lined a single to left field which scored both Tice and Pickens and made the score 7-5. . Delvi Cid singledt and Perez stopped at second base. Casey Frawley was sent to the plate to pinch hit for Jordan Casas and Frawley promptly doubled to left field scoring both Perez and Cid. Cid scored all the way from first base. The Indians pushed four runs across the plate in the ninth to tie the game at 7-7.

The losing pitcher was T.J. Hose (0-1) who was making his first Carolina League appearance and was saddled with the loss. The winning pitcher was Kyle Landis who pitched a scoreless two innings and struck out one. The time of the game was 4 hours and 28 minutes.

Dragons Sprint to a 2-1 Win Over the Captains
Billy Hamilton scored all the way from first base when Drew Poulk singled and Luigi Rodriguez bobbled the ball in center field and the Dayton Dragons took game one of the series 2-1 in eleven innings on Saturday night.

The Captains scored in the first inning for the second game in a row when Ronny Rodriguez doubled home Luigi Rodriguez and the Captains led 1-0. The Dragons tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Donald Lutz hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Hamilton.

Captains starter Mike Goodnight did not get a decision working five innings allowing one run on one hit, walking a season high five batters and striking out six. Dale Dickerson hurled three scoreless innings allowing three hits, walking one and striking out three. Kyle Petter (2-3) took the loss allowing the unearned run on three hits and striking out four.

Scrappers stymied in 2-1 loss to Cyclones

Joseph Colon and two relievers combined to allow two runs on seven hits but the Scrappers bats were silenced in the late innings in a 2-1 loss to the Brooklyn Cyclones.

The Scrappers had just two hits, a one-out single by Jerrud Sabourin in the third inning and an RBI single by Todd Hankins in the fourth. Hankins’ single tied the game at 1-1 after Brooklyn scored a run on a Richard Lucas double in the third.

Sunday finals:

Aeros win 3-1 behind another excellent Matt Packer outing 8 innings 1 run on 3 hits 1 walk and 7 K. Surprisingly on his radio show Ross Atkins didn't mention Packer although he did Austin Adams and TJ McFarland. Jordan Henry singles and 2 walks. Kyle Bellows 2 hits, hitting about 290 since June 1.

Kinston falls 10-3. Casey Frawley a 3 run homer, he's batting 207. TJ House not too good, 5 innings 3 runs on 8 hits 4 walks. Trey Haley worse, 1 inning, 4 runs, 3 earned on 3 walks and 2 hits. These two pitchers were among the way-over-slot signings in 2009.

Gonna try to go to a Scrappers vs. Vermont game this week. I dunno, this time I might concentrate on trying to take photos rather than paying close attention to the prospects.

If you get a chance to see Wetmore pitch try to give us a report on him. I'd like to know what pitches he has in his repertoire.

Why Wetmore? He doesn't seem to be making much of a splash. For Scrapper pitching, I think Will Roberts and Danny Jiminez are more interesting.

He's stunk until being promoted to Mahoning Valley but pitched very well since getting there. I like lefties who strike guys out. Just wondering what kind of stuff he has. He was very wild previous to this promotion, but now he is striking guys out and not walking anybody. Just wondering if he is another one of those lefties who take a while to get command or if he is a stiff whith nothing stuff who has just got lucky recently.

Hey I'm probably gonna head to Kinston for one of the last few home games they have....anyone in particular to watch for?

I don't follow this folder or the minors too much but figure since I'm close and it may be the last year the Indians are in Kinston I'll head over that way.
