This is the time of year the Indians do some of their best offseason work. Good time to sign a free agent reliever who's got nowhere to go in 30 days.

Maybe the logical trade of one of our two equally skilled catchers won't happen until the first injured catcher of the spring; someone is sure to go down with a broken hand, or worse, during spring games. Then we can cut a deal for Gomes.

Maybe be the same will hold for the Salazar deal: first contender to lose a pitcher in spring training could come calling [assuming Danny hasn't got hurt again himself; or perhaps Tomlin's modest salary [and modest talent] will appeal more.

Not ready to dump Salazar yet. Still young, cheap and can throw in the high 90s. Kipnis and a catcher are the ones they should dangle.

Arizona softened me up alright. 72 degrees and no humidity in January does wonders.

Good one civ - I hadn't thought that dealing Gomes and handing the duties to Perez would be another way to free up some payroll.

It's old school to think that Gomes has no worth because he doesn't hit much. Look around and teams are giving deals to catchers (and other players as well) based on their defensive ratings. There's scoring runs AND saving runs.

Another thing on the front office.

I talked about Andrew Miller in 2016 but of course they stepped up and got Jay Bruce last year at the deadline.

So this front office is all in by any definition.

One year ago today we had no idea about Jay Bruce. This year....to be determined.

Sea:

Would you suggest we hang on to all 6 starters, and put one in the pen? Not a bad idea since we can be sure someone will be on DL if not several of them during the course of the season.

I know it's not good for a pitcher's confidence, but MGR Seagull goes with the hot hand theory. Two bad outings in a row gets you sent to the pen and the next man up gets a shot. Kluber and Cookie are exempt. Rest of the guys subject to the Seagull Rule.

MLB.com's Jon Morosi reports that the Indians and Orioles discussed a potential Manny Machado trade last month, but "the sides aren't actively discussing him now."

Morosi notes that "many in the industry" believe the Indians are open to trading Danny Salazar, and he would certainly seem like a fit with the pitching-starved Orioles. However, it's unclear whether Salazar was involved in talks and it doesn't appear the two clubs have been in touch lately. Machado is not looking like a great bet to be traded before Opening Day at this point.

Mike Clevinger - S - Indians

Mike Clevinger made it clear on Friday that he has his sights set on winning a spot in the Indians' rotation in 2018.

The Indians have three spots already set in their rotation, with Danny Salazar, Josh Tomlin and Clevinger left to fight it out for the final two spots. Clevinger told reporters "I'm not even thinking about the bullpen. I want to throw 200 innings." The 27-year-old hurler posted a 3.11 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 137/60 K/BB ratio across 121 2/3 innings with the Tribe in 2017.

Hmmm - this guy does play 3B. And obviously could be a RH bat in the outfield. As a part timer on a cheap contract??? And friends with EE?

Jose Bautista's agent, Jay Alou, told Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com that he's "working out diligently" in preparation for 2018.

"It's no secret he's one of the most dedicated players in the game," said Alou. "He takes a lot of pride in staying in shape. His work ethic is contagious to other players." There's been very little discussion about the 37-year-old Bautista coming off a year where he batted just .203/.308/.366 with 23 homers over 686 plate appearances.

Alou expressed earlier this offseason that Bautista is willing to play anywhere, including both corner infield and outfield spots, as well as DH. Signing him shouldn't require a major investment at this stage of his career.
