Magallenes could re-instate Ezequiel Carrera with Cleveland permission

Ezequiel Carrera spent Christmas with his family and will have to catch a plane to Cleveland. There will be a medical check on his right wrist and depending on the results, the Cleveland Indians would give him permission to return to the Navigators. "I believe that there is a good opportunity to return," the central patroller said after a few minutes of working out. "I feel better, I have no longer any pain and that can help them to re-approve my return." The Güiria native had until December 20 to play with the Magallanes Navigators and was not enrolled on The roster of 34 players from the eleventh week. Cesar Quintero, Erold Andrus and assumed their roles with the team. "They've done very well, especially in this part of the championship you need a lot of thinking and depth in the lineup." "I believe in the team, which is I have assembled at this time. We are in third place and we must not lose that position. We must enforce the homecourt, winning in our yard. Stay focused and confident, "said the manager.

In 40 games Carerra has a .270 average and is leaving with three doubles, six triples, two homers, 14 RBIs and 23 runs scored. A base percentage of .349.

Venezuela Winter League

•Jose Lopez (3B, Cardenales de Lara): 2-for-4, R. Another good game from Lopez this offseason, and since the Indians showed interest in signing him and becoming “more aggressive” in signing him he is hitting .368 with 2 HR, 10 RBI and .994 OPS in his last 10 games.

•Eric Berger (RP, Bravos de Margarita): 0.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R/ER, 0 BB, 0 K. For the 4th straight game Berger is brought into the game in a matchup situation and promptly allows a hit to the first batter he has faced. In his last 4 outings he has faced just 5 batters and recorded one out (K) while allowing 4 hits and 1 walk.

•Rob Bryson (RP, Bravos de Margarita): 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. Bryson only recorded one out and faced one hitter, but he recorded the save. He was brought into the game with 2 outs and a runner on 1st base with 3 runs already in, but slammed the door on a 12-11 victory.

Spectacular --- The second stage of the tournament promises to be tight

December 26, 2011, 7:23 PM

Eagles and Licey favorites to win the Round Robin

Both teams look stronger than the Lions and Giants

Santo Domingo .-

The winningest teams in the history of the baseball tournament in the country, the Eagles del Cibao and the Tigers of Licey, are slight favorites in the "Round Robin" or semifinal that begins today against the Lions of the Escogido and Giants of Cibao.

The Eagles, return after two years away from the tournament after dominating the regular season 30-20, led by manager Felix Fermin, who also returned after two seasons with the Giants of the Cibao. Surprisingly, the Eagles had the best record on the road (17-8) than at home (13-12).

The Eagles dominated the collective batting (.256), and their main hitter was shortstop Joaquin Arias, who finished batting leader (.387) and co-leader in hits (58). Elian Herrera (.313) and Audy Ciriaco (.310). In RBI, Wilin Rosario led the AL with 36 and was followed by Arias (30).

The pitching staff was led by the imported Shane Youman, 5-1 and 0.88, Lorenzo Barcelo, 6-2, 3.14, and Angel Castro, 5-3 and 2.30.

Licey, also returns to the "Round Robin" after a year's absence, came in second place, ahead of the Lions (26-24) and led the league in pitching (2.86) and second in batting (.251 ).

For this stage the Lions have a strong team led by Juan Francisco (.300-5-26), Anderson Hernandez (.309-2-18) and Ronny Paulino (.750 in a game).

The pitching staff will be led by Francisley Bueno (4-2 and 1.90), Ramon Ortiz (2-2 and 2.70) and Ubaldo Jimenez.

Surprises

Lions and Giants who rallied and finished the season with momentum could surprise.

The Lions, who rallied and finished strong won 13 of 14 and finish second in ERA with 3.24.

The Lions have a very solid starting rotation with Jordan Norberto (2-0 and 2.45), Jorge Sosa (2-4 and 3.56), Nelson Figueroa (1-0 and 0.00) and Aneury Rodriguez (2-0 and 1.97).

On offense the Lions will be led by Florimón Pedro (324) and Pablo Ozuna (.313).

Los Gigantes del Cibao, who managed to sneak in by winning the one game playoff against the Toros of the East, are a very dangerous enemy.

The Giants have a very good starting rotation with Edinson Volquez, Aquilino Lopez, John Halama and Kevin Pucetas.

On offense will be led by Carlos Peguero, Wilson Betemit and Alexi Casilla.

Ramon Ortiz is in charge of taking the mound for the Tigers, after a 2-2 regular season and 2.70 ERA. Jordan Norberto was 2-0 with 2.45 ERA and has the commitment to get on the mound against the terrors of Licey. Felix Fermin manager announced that he will start the playoffs with Lorenzo Barcelo (6-2, 3.14). Edison Volquez only threw four innings in the regular season, but will release today for the Giants.

A WAR

December 26, 2011, 10:07 PM

Start the Round Robin

Then came the moment of truth in winter ball in the Dominican Republic when we start the semifinal round robin format.

Each team will play 18 games total with each team playing the other 6 times. The Cibao Eagles, Licey Tigers, Escogido Lions and Giants of the Cibao Chosen will meet in round robing event to determine who will qualify for the League Championship series the winner advancing to the Series del Caribe.

In this first round clash at Quisqueya Stadium in the capital city of Santa Domingo will be the Licey Tigers and Escogido Lions.

Ramon Ortiz will go to the mound for the Licey, while Jordan Norberto will have that responsibility for the Lions.

Meanwhile, the Gigantes del Cibao Cibao Eagles will visit the Eagles at the Estadio Cibao in Santiago.

For the Giants, Edinson Volquez (acquired in the draft of natives from the Toros del Este) will face Lorenzo Barcelo, the Eagles.

Everything is ready for the great battle of the Dominican winter ball for the BHD Cup option.

The managers know that for a long playoff like this, the strategies are much more important and it is expected that both Felix Fermin, Rafael Landestoy, Ken Oberkfell and Hector de la Cruz will move their chips in the best possible way to win the two tickets available for the grand finale.

It remains to be seen whether the case of outfielder Ricardo Nanita can be resolved and if he can finally join the payroll of the four qualifiers after the fiasco that occurred during the lotter of natives last Thursday.

What is not in doubt is that when you sing play ball tonight the teams will be playing good baseball.

Semifinal Round

The Battle

Eagles, Tigers, Lions and Giants begin a fierce battle today looking to advance to the Final Series

Santo Domingo

The round robin, a phase implemented in 1986-87 season will start tonight with the Eagles, Tigers, Lions and Giants fighting for the final two tickets that lead to the finals. This remains to be seen and will be determined on the ground where there are more questions than answers.

The three Dominican baseball greats have not gathered in the Round Robin since the 2005-2006 season and only for the second time in the last twelve years (1999-2000).

In the most interesting game of the day, the Licey Tigers will face their old rival the Lions, who also shared second place in the regular season (26-24). in a game that starts at 7:30 at Quisqueya Stadium . Rafael Landestoy leader of the Tigers decided to send to the box one of the best pitchers during the regular season, the right hander Ramon Ortiz (2-2).

Ken Oberkfell leaned towards left-hander Jordan Norberto, who was pulled out of the bullpen in the middle of the campaign, gave him confidence and finished with a 2-0, 2.45 ERA 33 strikeouts and 38 innings.

The Eagles, winner of the regular round with a record of 30-20, at Estadio Cibao will receive their neighbors Cibao Giants (25-26) when Lorenzo Barcelo (6-2 and 3.14) gets the start and Edinson Volquez will pitch for the Giants. In his short work of four innings for the Toros this year only allowed two hits and showed flashes of the pitcher three years ago he won 17 games in the Majors with Cincinnati.

Look at the teams
Image
BARCELO

Eagles:

The collective cibaeño was the most stable of the regular season and the only one that qualified without fear and led the circuit in batting (.255), homers (31), stolen bases (51) and was the team that made fewest errors with 59 ... The contract given to the popular first baseman and outfielder Brandon Moss seems more important than any of the "picks" selected in the lottery of natives and imported ... Effectiveness of Raul Valdes (5.19 and marks of 4 - 4) reveals that he is a still a question in a rotation which in principle has also, Barceló, Carmona and Shane Youman ... Jose Diaz and Baez Manaury can really help in the bullpen, as well as shortstop Pedro Ciriaco certainly most valuable player, Joaquin Arias ... Missing will be the receiver Wilin Rosario, who will play starting on the 30th of this month.
Image
ORTIZ

Licey:

The Tigers have depth at all aspects of the game, but their defense on the left side of the infield remains the main question ... Michael Martinez, who made ten errors in 19 games with Estrellas does not look to be the solution. ... Martinez and Alejandro de Aza can do much on offense, but obviously need more work on defense.., Ronny Paulino selected in the lottery and mainly Donell Linares will offset somewhat the problems the club faces against lefties, who often will come in the series ... Jairo Asencio improves a sensitive area such as the closer ... There is no doubt that the rotation of Ramon Ortiz, Hector Noesí, Ubaldo Jimenez, Jack Steven and / or Esmila Rogers is good.
Image
NORBERTO

Leones:

The Lions nine, the best in league in the last 15 days (9-1), are excited with the choices made in the loter of natives and imported ... Outfielder Andy Dirk, the best player of offense that was among those available, fills the gap throughout the year and hitting third in the lineup, and Jose Constanza is a true leadoff hitter and center fielder ... Aneury Rodriguez rounds out a good rotation that also includes Norberto, Nelson Figueroa and Jorge Sosa, leaving Edward Valdez as long reliever in the first and third games, when the schedule includes four games in a row ... Moises Alou said that the chances of third baseman Josh Donaldson returning are 50-50.
Image
VOLQUEZ

Giants:

Of the four groups participating in the series, the Giants has the biggest transformation ... experienced pitchers John Halama, Kevin Pucetas and imports are the only team members remaining in the group with prior to the lottery..... Pablo Peguero the manager made strenuous efforts trying to land position players who can contribute in the attack ... So successful lottery selections were infielder Diory Hernandez, outfielders Ramirez, Archie Gilbert and Wilkins and catcher Dusty Brown, together with Carlos Peguero, Erick Almonte, Pedro Felix, Wilson Valdez and Alexi Casilla, form a good nucleus that can compete with the best ... Unfortunately for the Giants, they will be without Wilson Betemit from the outset due to a death of a relative ... The starting pitching staff also looks reliable with Volquez, Halama, Aquilino Lopez, and Pucetas.

Torrealba issues apology after suspension

Catcher draws punishment after striking umpire during game

ARLINGTON --

Catcher Yorvit Torrealba has been suspended for 66 games -- the rest of this Venezuelan Winter League season and all of the next -- after striking umpire Dario Rivero Jr. on Friday while playing for Leones de Caracas. Jose Grasso Vecchio, Venezuelan Winter League president, made the announcement on Monday.

Torrealba also issued a statement of apology on Monday.

"I wanted to express my sincere apologies to all parties for my actions during the Venezuelan Winter League game on Friday," Torrealba said. "I have extended an apology to the Rangers organization as well. I am embarrassed for my conduct, and personally relayed that feeling to the umpire after that night's game.

"On the field, I strive to be an example for children, especially those in my native Venezuela, and I regret my actions. I understand the reactions to the incident and will make every effort to set a positive example in the future."

Rangers officials said that the club has reached out to Torrealba but is not expected to take further disciplinary action. The suspension does not affect Torrealba's status for the upcoming Major League season.

Torrealba swung and struck Rivero in his mask after striking out. The incident was captured on video that quickly went viral.

"There was a clear act of aggression that violates the statutes of the league," Vecchio said. "One that, like any such act, is unacceptable. The punishment is meant to serve as an example. The league acted after analyzing all the known details, that's why the suspension is for close to a year.

"We couldn't make it for less, since for a while we have been mounting a campaign against violence in stadiums and during games."

Torrealba is entering his second season with the Rangers and is once again expected to split duties with Mike Napoli.

Carlos Zambrano will be the rock against the Eagles

Zulia seeking a victory to ensure their classification. A triumph of the Caribbeans coupled with a defeat for both the Eagles and the Cardinals assures classification

CARACAS .-

For the second day in a row the Aguilas del Zulia seek a victory in Puerto La Cruz against the Caribes of Anzoategui that guarantees them a place in round robin. This time, the "Bull" Carlos Zambrano aims to be the stumbling block in the aspirations of Zulia.

The "Bull" has had 4 presentations in the league (0-1 2.55 EFE). His only decision was to the Eagles , who scored 3 runs against Zambrano , including two home runs to make the "Bull" take a loss. For their part, Zulia will put on the mound to César Valdés (1-0 0.00), coming off a shutout against Lara Cardinals in 6 innings of work, where he prescribed 5 strikeouts and allowed 3 hits.

If the Caribbeans win, both teams would have to wait for a Cardinals loss in order to secure their place in the round robin.

Rick Sweet still confident in his few opportunities

The Lions suffered two losses against the Carribeans but that does bend the optimism of Rick Sweet. The manager said that despite the defeats, the record in the last eight games was positive. And that motivates him to think about the playoffs, but yesterday's crash has left them two games out of fifth place.

"Absolutely," said the pilot of the Lions when asked whether he thought had a chance after two devastating defeats against the Caribes. "We still have three games and there are other clubs fighting for the last spots. By no means do I think that after these two losses we are out. And the players think like me. "

Caracas is on the ropes after those two losses to the Caribbeans. For now we depend on other results to advance. Winning three games would leave them with a record of 31-32, and it still may be insufficient to think about the postseason. The Lions get back into the fray on Wednesday, searching for the desired run of three straight wins in the end.

The next game will be against the Tigers, who also are in need of wins to secure a qualifying spot will then have the same desire to win, but not as desperately. Then there are games against the Navegantes in the stadium Jose Bernardo Perez in Valencia, and against the Bravos at the University Stadium in Caracas.

The complexity of the situation in Caracas is that, despite the Cardinals and the Caribbeans, their rivals have two games each left on the schedule, both teams have one game less than Lions. And that puts them in an advantageous position. Sweet, however, prefers to see the optimistic side. Sweet does not see the two losses to Caribbeans so bad, because of the results obtained in the last eight games (6-2).

"If before the last eight games had asked me if I have settled for a 6-2 record, I would have said yes, "the manager said that before the two losses after the run of six wins. "I know that after the string of victories no one wanted to see a two game losing streak. But I think we had a good result. "

The Caracas crisis can be aggravated by Yorvit Torrealba, who yesterday hit home plate umpire Dario Rivera after striking out swinging, and was suspended by the league. And it might be even worse if the injury suffered yesterday to shortstop leaves Marwin Gonzalez disabled and not able to participate in the last three games.

"I think in that sense, we needed a long rest, "said the manager. "So I went to the clubhouse after the game and talked to the boys. I wished them Merry Christmas, I told them to enjoy time with their families and remember to return with the same adrenaline and focus on baseball. "

The pressure and excitement of a seventh game series finale was felt in Antonio Herrera Gutiérrez stadium during the eighth inning last night . The Lara Cardinals moved into a position to qualify for the last berth to the round robin, playing against the Tigres de Aragua, also occupying that position.

Clean up hitter, Luis Jimenez, with two outs, was at the plate facing major league pitcher Jose Mijares in a great duel. With two strikes connected up to six fouls before getting the hit a double to center field brought home Alcides Escobar's to beat the Tigers by the score of 4-2.
