Shin-Soo Choo leads Indians past Matt Harrison, Rangers
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Matt Harrison knew what the problem was. The bigger problem was he couldn't fix it in time.

The left-hander threw 88 pitches -- most of them out of the strike zone -- in only four innings for the Texas Rangers in a 12-6 loss to a Cleveland Indians split squad on Friday night.

Shin-Soo Choo, plunked in the batting helmet by Harrison's pitch in the first inning, hit a three-run triple in the seventh. He also doubled and threw out a runner at third base from right field.

Harrison, vying for a spot in the Rangers' rotation, gave up four hits and four runs. He also walked four and threw two wild pitches.

Cleveland third baseman Jason Donald did not play again due to a sore left hand, hit by a pitch March 5. The Indians said trainer Lonnie Soloff will address Donald's status on Saturday.
"Donald tried to take some swings today, but it continues to bother him," manager Manny Acta said.

Jack Hannahan, who could get the starting job at third if Donald is out for an extended period, went 2-for-4 and scored twice. Signed to a minor league contract, the non-roster veteran is hitting .412 in 14 games.

Asdrubal Cabrera hit a two-run double and a solo homer and Matt LaPorta had a two-run triple for Cleveland.

Elvis Andrus and David Murphy hit solo homers off Indians starter Carlos Carrasco, who allowed five runs and seven hits over 4 1/3 innings.

Game notes
Indians OF Grady Sizemore practiced sliding for the first time since having microfracture surgery on his left knee in June. He is expected to DH on Sunday. ... In night games, Texas is 0-4 and has been outscored 42-22. ... The Rangers made three errors and issued nine walks.

Lewis clinches his release.

The box score says David Huff hit a double, I don't think so, but with his lousy spring maybe he can try his hand at a new position.

Travis Buck is a cinch to make the team.

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Shelley Duncan hit his first homer of the spring, a three-run shot, and the Cleveland Indians overcame a brief hiccup by starter Justin Masterson to beat the Los Angeles Angels 10-7 on Saturday.

Scott Kazmir had a difficult outing for the Angels, allowing four runs and four walks in 4 1/3 innings.

Duncan broke a 4-all tie with his homer off reliever Jason Bulger in the seventh, but the Angels rallied. Alberto Callaspo tripled in two runs to cut the deficit to 7-6 in the bottom half. He scored on Alexi Amarista's two-out single to tie it. All three runs were charged to Jensen Lewis.

Juan Diaz put Cleveland ahead again with an RBI double in the eighth.

Three of the runners Kazmir walked came around to score. He walked Carlos Santana and Jason Nix in the third and both came in on Austin Kearns' long double to left-center for a 4-0 lead.

The Angels scored four in the third off Masterson, with three coming on Howard Kendrick's bases-loaded single to right that was bobbled by Kearns for an error. Bobby Abreu then singled in Kendrick.

Masterson made his fifth start, giving up six hits and four runs (three earned) in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked one.

"I like where I'm at, going five innings today, next time the sixth, then the seventh. That's what we are here for and I feel good," Masterson said. "It's getting the body to do what you want. Sometimes, you get tired and it does something else. You've got to smack your leg, tell it to get in there and get going."

The right-hander ran into some trouble with his mechanics, but got help from pitching coach Tim Belcher. "I felt good, especially the first two innings and the last two," Masterson said. "That third inning, I got a little lazy.

"Belch came out and reminded me what to do and everything got back on point. After I had been up, up, up with my pitches, I put them back down in the zone and solidified that.

"It wasn't so much being lazy. That's how I term it. My leg was dragging behind a bit. I knew I had to put a little more behind pitches. It could have been a bazillion things that did it, but in that instance that is what I took his instructions to mean. I did it, and it worked."

In his previous start, Oakland roughed up Masterson for five runs and seven hits over four innings.

Masterson went 6-13 with a 4.70 ERA over 34 games (29 starts) for Cleveland in 2010.

Chad Huffman doubled in a run and Adam Everett added an RBI single for a 2-0 Indians lead in the second.

Everett left the game with a jammed left thumb. He was to be re-evaluated.

Homers by Asdurbal C., Kearns and Buck. Carmona 3 runs on 9 hits in 6 innings. Herrmann and Todd each with a shutout inning. I think Frank has won a job. Todd could; he has been effective since his first one or two outing.s

jayson Nix playing third, has made NO errors!!! And got a hit!!! And struck out only 2 of 3 ABs.

Since I don't think he'll make the Indians, and since Chisenhall plays 3rd in Columbus, and Kipnis plays 2nd, and Phelps backs them both up, I'm not sure what his role will be. If it's None, that's OK.

Tribe rallies late to win. Carrasco with the kind of start he's (in)famous four. He throws 4 fine shutout innings and then blows to pieces in the 5th, allows 6 runs including 2 homers. He has not had a good start in weeks. He's beyond the tired arm phase. He's back to the lousy pitcher phase. I think he's our No. 2 starter.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Cord Phelps tripled home the winning run in the ninth inning as the Cleveland Indians rallied past the Kansas City Royals 8-7 Wednesday.

Both teams auditioned relievers with mixed results. Homers by Alcides Escobar and Kila Ka'aihue helped Kansas City to a 7-4 lead. Sean O'Sullivan gave up three runs in the eighth and the game-winner in the ninth after Tim Collins, Louis Coleman and Aaron Crow held Cleveland to one run over the middle 4 1/3 innings.

Escobar, a slick-fielding shortstop acquired from Milwaukee as part of the trade for former Cy Young winner Zack Greinke, has four homers this spring. Ka'aihue hit his fifth homer, and got three hits to raise his average to .400.

[Good game report, it refers to "relievers with mixed results" and doesn't tell us who ours were.]

OK, so Carrasco actually allowed 1 run in 4 innings, not zero, but he did explode in the 5th. He has proved himself ready for no major league job, other than a Cleveland top of the rotation starter.

2 runs and 4 hits off Carmona in the top of the 1st. More than 35 pitches. He's "amped up". Maybe when the stadium is empty for the rest of his starts at home, Carmona will be able to perform like an adult.

Brantley with a cheap single but Choo GIDP, 2-0 after one.

Fine play by Hannahan and LaPorta: just the kind of defense we need. "A year ago that's a double into the LF corner.... what a play by Hannahan, diving to the line to stop the ball" Carmona with 2 K's in the 2nd. He has 4 in 2 innings.
