All I can remember from '48 was sitting on my mom's lap on the recliner and listening to the games on the radio. I was conscious. Gotta believe it was my mom that gifted me the Cleveland Indians. Grew up listening to Jimmy Dudley on wtrf.

See game time for the broadcasts of the 1948 world series.

Guardians Infielder Keeps Impressing With The Bat In Winter Ball

January 3, 2025

By Andres Chavez

When fans and media discuss the Cleveland Guardians internal candidates to take over at second base and fill in for the recently traded Andres Giménez, the most frequently mentioned names are Juan Brito, Angel Martinez and Daniel Schneemann.

No one seems to remember Gabriel Arias and wrote him off after his disappointing MLB stint that ended in July.

Arias, of course, is not a natural second baseman.

However, he has experience in every position on the field (except for catcher) as a professional and, if he hits well enough in the winter and then in the spring, he could become an option for the keystone.

It’s fair to say that so far, the ‘winter’ part is covered: he had an amazing regular season of the Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Profesional (LVBP) with Tiburones de La Guaira, and is currently playing the semifinal round for Navegantes del Magallanes as an addition.

On Thursday, Arias had another amazing day at the plate.

“Cleveland #Guardians (INF/OF) Gabriel Arias with a pair of extra base hits last night (2-5 R 2B HR 3RBI) @Magallanes_bbc including this 3-run HR in the 1st inning in Venezuelan Winter League action,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.

https://twitter.com/i/status/1875214632505483318

He hit .292/.364/.547 in the regular season, with a .911 OPS, nine doubles, six home runs and 23 RBI in 27 games for Tiburones.

He currently has a .353 batting average and a 1.000 OPS in six semifinal games, with two doubles and a homer in four contests.

After posting a disappointing .608 OPS in Cleveland this year, he was demoted and bounced back nicely with a .904 mark in Columbus.

The offensive revival is very much real, and he hasn’t stopped hitting since that demotion.

If Arias can keep up the good form in the spring, look out: he might be able to win an everyday role.

The Giants are still alive

by The Editorial Staff

January 4, 2025

A three-run rally in the eighth inning led the Carolina Giants to an important 5-3 victory over the Mayagüez Indians in the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (LBPRC).

The Giants came back twice to improve their record to 17-22 and maintain their hopes of creating a tie for the last playoff spot on the final day of the regular season.

Mayagüez, already ranked first in the standings, raised its record to 23-16.

The Giants came out aggressively from the start and created their first offensive attack in the second inning when consecutive hits by Jan Hernandez and Bryan Flete put runners on the corners. Indians starter Luis Leroy Cruz struck out Adeiny Hechavarria after Flete was picked off straying too far from first base.

Alexis Pantoja hit a shot that hit a spot on the mound and extended to the center field, driving in the Giants' first run.

Giants Miller Hogan hit the second batter he faced in the game, Eddie Rosario, with a pitch and then got nine batters out - five of them by strikeout - before the Tribe could figure him out.

The Indians' first hit came off the bat of designated hitter Anthony Garcia, who doubled to center field. Danny Ortiz then hit a sacrifice fly ball to drive home and tie the game, 1-1, in the fourth inning.

A single by Mario Feliciano, off right-handed reliever Angel Reyes, drove in the run that gave the Indians a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning.

However, in a game so important to keep the possibility of qualifying alive, the Giants came back on a double by Johnathan Rodríguez drove in Bryan Torres from second base to tie the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the inning.

The Mayagüez team responded offensively with a big hit. A solo home run by Anthony García over the left field fence off Giants right-hander Zack Brown put the game 3-2 in the eighth inning.

The Giants turned the tide of the game around in the eighth inning. After two outs, Gabriel Cancel reached base on an error by Martin “Machete” Maldonado at first base. Right-hander Joshua James then allowed a hit to Alan Espinal and walked Torres to load up the Giants’ bases.

James was relieved by Josimar Cousin, who with two more walks and an error on a throw to first base added three runs to Carolina's cause to put the score at 5-3.

Brown (1-0) earned the win by pitching the ninth inning, while James (0-2) took the loss after Carolina's final three runs came on his account without getting a batter out. Right-hander Osvaldo Berríos earned his second save of the season.

The Cangrejeros de Santurce and the Senadores de San Juan qualified for the postseason last night, to join the Indios de Mayagüez. Thus, there is only one space left to be defined between the Criollos de Caguas, the Leones de Ponce and the Gigantes de Carolina.

The last day of the regular season will be played today, Saturday, when the Carolina Giants visit the Indians at the Isidoro “Cholo” García Stadium, the San Juan Senators receive the Ponce Lions at the Hiram Bithorn Stadium in the capital and the Caguas Criollos face the Santurce Cangrejeros at the Yldefonso Solá Morales Stadium.

All matches will be broadcast on the league's YouTube channel starting at 7:00 p.m. The game between Caguas and Santurce will be broadcast on Wapa Deportes.

2025 started rainy and it will be a long year

By

Jan 5, 2025

Montería. As has not happened in recent years, 2025 has surprised many people from Córdoba with rain in the first three days of January and according to Ideam, these will continue until March with some periodicity in what is the beginning of a La Niña phenomenon that in 2024 did not have a major impact on the region.

On January 1, a torrential downpour fell in the afternoon hours in a large part of the department of Córdoba. That was the first climatic warning of the current year. But in addition, rains fell on the 2nd and 3rd of this month. The meteorological authorities of the country turned to a report from the International Climate Research Institute (IRI) to detail what is coming in terms of climate for Colombia at the beginning of this year. "For January-March 25, the official consensus of the IRI predicts that the El Niño phase will have a probability of 0%; the Neutral phase of 37% while La Niña will have a probability of 63%," said Ideam.

There is also a reported likelihood of sudden increases in the levels of the Sinú River and its tributaries in the upper reaches.

Reports also indicate that the heaviest rains are expected in several areas in the west and southwest of the national maritime zone and in sectors of the departments of Cesar, Bolívar, Sucre, Córdoba, Antioquia, Norte de Santander, Santander, Boyacá, Cundinamarca, Tolima, Caldas, Risaralda, Quindío, Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Cauca, Nariño, western Meta and Arauca, Casanare, southern Vichada, Guainía, eastern Guaviare, western Caquetá and Putumayo, eastern Vaupés, and southern and central Amazonas.

The rainfall of the first few days has put the predictions of the famous cabañuelas on everyone's lips, including Colombians. These are the same predictions that many people have historically used to define how the weather will behave during the 12 months of the year, taking the first 12 days of a year as a basis. With what has happened to date and according to these predictions, January, February and March would be rainy. For yesterday, January 4, Ideam also predicted a rainy day in a large part of the Cordoba territory, so April would also have the same condition.

The Editorial Staffby The Editorial Staff

January 5, 2025

A walk-off hit by Sabin Ceballos in the bottom of the tenth inning caused the Mayagüez Indians to knock out the Carolina Giants, 6-5, at the Isidoro “Cholo” García Stadium.

With the game tied 4-4, the tiebreaker rule was applied , which requires teams to begin extra innings with a runner on second base. The Giants began the tenth inning with speedy Bryan Torres on second base. Then, after two outs, Jan Hernandez hit a single to center field to drive in the visitors' fifth run.

Giants reliever Saul Gonzalez would make an error on his throw to third base after a bunt by veteran Danny Ortiz. Pinch runner Alan Marrero scored the tying run 5-5. Then, it was Ceballos' turn, who with his hit drove in Ortiz to produce the winning run.

Gonzalez (0-1) took the loss while right-hander Justin Yeager (1-0) earned the win in two innings.

With the elimination of the Carolina Giants, Caguas and Ponce will face each other on Sunday for the last spot in the winter semifinals. Carolina had qualified for the last two final series, so this season there will be a new finalist for the first time in three years.

The Lara Cardinals continue to make a perfect start in the LVBP Round Robin. This Saturday, those led by Henry Blanco beat the Navegantes del Magallanes 7-3 in Barquisimeto.

Dominican Republic Round Robin

Tigres del Licey 3 2 1 .667 0.00

Aguilas Cibaeñas 3 1 2 .333 1.00
First time since 2010 when I first showed interest in winter ball that the Indians/Guardians do not have any players participating in LIDOM.

The 2012-2013 season saw the debut of a 19 year old kid from Bani DR. His positions were listed as a 2B, SS, & 3B. His name was Jose Ramirez.

In 38 plate appearances that season, he had a .312 BA playing against guys a lot older and more experienced. In fact, he was 1 of the 3 youngest players in the league. He had a .990 fielding % in 306 innings and 191 chances.

He was selected to represent the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean World Series and made the all-star team playing 2B in 5 games & SS for 2 games.

Again, Jose was 1 of the 5 youngest players in the series that saw Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico as participants. The Mexico won the series with a 4-3 record. The Dominican Republic came in second with a 5-2 record followed by Puerto Rico and Venezuela clocking in fourth. ***

Jose only had a batting average of (.226). He shared SS with Miguel Tejeda and 2B with Julio lugo.
He played in 7 games, 38 PA, 32 AB, 5 R, 7 H, 2 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, $ RBI, 2 SB, 8 W, 8 K, .385 OBP, .387 SLG, .772 OPS, and 1 intentional walk.
Defensively, in 75 total innings and 33 total chances, committed 3 errors.

Jose played 5 total seasons and is the one person totally responsible for my interest in winter ball.

The rest is history.
