Guardians Outfield Prospect Keeps Mashing In Puerto Rico
December 5, 2024
By Andres Chavez
When people talk about the Cleveland Guardians’ best prospect, Johnathan Rodriguez rarely gets mentioned.
They discuss Chase DeLauter, Angel Genao, Juan Brito, Jaison Chourio, Angel Martinez and more.
However, it’s not an exaggeration when we say that Rodriguez is the one with the most power, and that tool wins games.
Yes, his swing might have holes, but as long as he shows off his power, Rodriguez will have a chance to enjoy an MLB career.
After being named the International League (Triple-A) MVP in 2024 thanks to a .301 batting average, 29 home runs and 94 RBI, Rodriguez is currently playing Winter Ball in Puerto Rico.
Needless to say, he is enjoy an amazing stretch there, too.
“Cleveland #Guardians OF prospect Johnathan Rodriguez drove in two more runs tonight with a 2-run double in the 1st inning in @LBPRC action for his club Gigantes de Carolina. Rodriguez has now driven in 12 runs over his last 3 games! 7-12 3R 1(2B) 3HR 12RBI 1BB .583 AVG,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.
Seven hits and 12 RBI in three games is the stuff of legends.
Rodriguez, with three home runs already in Puerto Rico, keeps enjoying a truly breakout year.
Despite the aforementioned Triple-A numbers and a 140 wRC+ (40 percent better than the league average hitter), he didn’t really do much with his 40 MLB plate appearances this year.
Rodriguez hit .129 with a 63 wRC+, and was eventually demoted.
We can all agree that 40 trips to the plate is not enough to write him off, though.
Right now, there is an opening in the Guardians’ right field and Rodriguez could be one of the candidates to fill it.
He has a future in the majors.
The role is still up in the air and will depend on how often he strikes out.

Carolina, on the other hand, suffered a defeat after winning six games in a row and fell to third place with a record of 11-9.
The Indians scored the first run on a sacrifice fly by Brian Rey in the second inning. The lead held until Johnathan Rodriguez hit a solo home run to make it 1-1. At that point, Indians starter Daryl Thompson lost the perfect game he had been pitching in the fifth inning.

Cleveland Guardians Winter Ball Weekly 12/2-8/24
GUARDIANS ORGANIZATION PLAYERS
Gabriel Arias (RF-1B, La Guaira): combined 6-for-23, 3 R, 3 2B, 2 RBI, 5 K - Arias started his week strong with a 3-for-5 Tuesday that included a pair each of doubles and RBI. While he has struggled since then, his season slash line remains impressive at .333/.398/.680 with a majority of his 25 hits being of the extra-base variety (eight doubles and six homers). Most notable, however, was his defensive positioning. Not only did he play every game last week but Saturday’s in right field, but his lone infield appearance was at a corner position, not in his usual home in the middle of the diamond. Might this be a preview of coming attractions this spring.,?
Johnathan Rodriguez (RF-LF, Carolina): combined 6-for-15, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 2 BB, 4 K - Like Arias, J-Rod’s best game came in his first appearance of the week - a three-hit, four-RBI masterpiece last Monday. His second homer of the week was also notable, however, as it provided the Gigantes’ only run of Thursday’s loss.
Dayan Frias (SS, Monteria): combined 5-for-18, 6 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 5 BB, 2 K - Frias, unlike his 40-man counterparts saved his best of the week for last. His five-RBI Friday (the entire LPB took the weekend off) was highlighted by a fifth-inning grand slam and a trio of walks, including one in the first with the bases loaded - on his second plate appearance of a seven-run first that he led off with a strikeout.

Guardians Infielder Keeps Posting Gaudy Numbers In Winter League
December 15, 2024
By Andres Chavez
The Cleveland Guardians have several of their roster members playing in Winter Leagues.
It’s a good way for players to keep themselves in shape ahead of spring training and earn some extra money.
Gabriel Arias, who plays the infield for the Guardians, might be having the most impressive winter among all members of the team.
He started off on fire in November and hasn’t stopped hitting ever since.
After another incredible performance, his numbers tell the story of an MVP candidate if he had more games in Venezuela’s Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Profesional (LVBP).
“Cleveland #Guardians (INF/OF) Gabriel Arias reached base 3x tonight (2-4 3RBI BB) driving in 3 runs for his club @Tiburonesbbc_ in the Venezuelan Winter League. Arias is currently hitting .325 with a 1.030 OPS over 21 games. 27-91 19R 8(2B) 6HR 21RBI 6BB 2SB .325 AVG 1.030 OPS,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.
https://twitter.com/i/status/1868131255478542760
The Venezuelan league has seen an offensive spike as a whole this year, but a .325 batting average and a 1.030 OPS is impressive nonetheless.
It hasn’t been Arias’ best season with the glove, as he has committed many errors at multiple positions, but his bat has done some damage down in Venezuela.
It’s a continuation of a really impressive stretch he enjoyed in Triple-A before closing out the season.
Arias opened the year with the Guardians but was sent down in July after posting a 70 wRC+.
Then, in Columbus, he made adjustments and regained his confidence, hitting for an impressive 130 wRC+ in 43 games.
If he keeps up this level during the spring, it’s easy to see Arias winning some playing time at shortstop and other spots.
