Tiburones de La Guaira buries 38 years of drought and becomes champion of the LVBP

The Tiburones de La Guaira were named champions of the 2023-2024 season of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP) this Sunday, after the La Guaira team beat Cardenales de Lara at home, by a score of 3-0 in the fifth and last game of the grand final.

The sharks had not won the championship since 1986. Now they will represent Venezuela in the 2024 Caribbean Series to be held at Miami Florida after obtaining their eighth title after 38 years of drought.

LVBP: Brayan Rocchio dedicates the title to the Tiburones de La Guaira fans

The big league infielder has been one of the pillars of the Sharks team

The Tiburones de La Guaira break their spell of thirty-eight years without being able to become champions in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League after beating Cardenales de Lara in the final.

One of the most outstanding players throughout the La Guaira campaign was infielder Brayan Rocchio, who totaled nine runs (five RBI and four scored) in the Sharks five games in the series.

"This is for the fans. It is a source of pride for us and for the fans," says the big league player after winning what would be the eighth league title in the history of the La Guaira team.

Rocchio also thanks the fans for having trusted him, while expressing his happiness: "that is one of the most important things and that gave me the most strength."

"I really came with only one goal and that was to help the team win, whether in batting or fielding," says the player born in Caracas about his role in the new monarch of Venezuelan baseball.

YASIEL PUIG

Puig: ”I came to do the impossible and we are already champions”. Puig was 8 for 19 with 3 doubles and a home run in the 5 games played in the final. While in the regular season he recorded an average of .418 (91-38) with 10 homers.

Brayan Rocchio: “It is an honor to have obtained this victory”

The 23-year-old hit two extra-base hits and drove in five runs in the Finals

JESUS DAVID CASTELLANO

JANUARY 29, 2024

Brayan Rocchio did not have spectacular percentages during this Final, but he was timely with the bat and the hits were decisive in the production of runs and in helping Tiburones de La Guaira reach their eighth title in Venezuelan professional baseball.

“I am proud to have obtained this victory,” Rocchio told Carlos Valmore Rodríguez of IVC Networks during the championship celebration. “But more than for me, it is for the La Guaira fans who have been there with us all the way. "There weren't many hits that I had, but thank God they were timely hits to help the team win."

Brayan Rocchio's production in the now recently completed final matchup consisted of a three-run triple in the second game to turn the score around in the fifth inning and a double that brought a couple of teammates to the plate to open the scoring in the second inning of the third game.

Both situations were with the bases loaded, which gives a greater impact to the opportunism of the one who debuted in MLB during 2023 with the Cleveland Guardians uniform.

Rocchio contributed in a key way in both aspects of the game

“I contributed enough to help the team. I came here (to Venezuela) with only one plan and that was to be able to help the team both defensively and offensively, thank God I was able to do it. From the beginning I said that if we won we were going to make history and the way we are doing it is a great source of pride for me.”

If something stood out in Brayan Rocchio's game, it was his defense at short stop. He once again exalted one of the most famous positions in Venezuelan baseball and most emblematic for the fans.

He played a potential Gold Glove shortstop, completing 21 assists and 9 putouts of his 31 chances. He took part in 6 double plays. He seemed very confident on the field, with the ability to make difficult plays and with mobility.

In the semi-finals, Rocchio had 44 assiists and 11 putouts of his 55 chances. He took part in 8 double plays. He committed 2 errors.

In 21 regular season games, Rocchio had 43 assists and 18 putouts of his 61 chances. He took part in 11 double plays but committed 3 errors.

Guardians Prospect Helps Winter Team Take Home A Title

By Andres Chavez January 29, 2024

The Cleveland Guardians had some of their players star in winter leagues.

Jose Ramirez had a brief stint with Leones del Escogido and Gabriel Arias was on Cangrejeros de Santurce’s roster, and there were other players in the organization showing the best of their talent in the winter leagues.

One of the most productive winter seasons, however, belonged to Guardians shortstop Brayan Rocchio.

Expected to win the shortstop gig in spring training, Rocchio was a star with Tiburones de La Guaira in Venezuela’s LVBP.

Guardians Prospective posted a video in which he is seen making a fantastic play with his bare hand in the Finals.

“#Guardians 23yr old switch hitting INF prospect Brayan Rocchio with another brilliant play at shortstop tonight helping his Tiburones team win 3-0 to take home the @LVBP_Oficial championship! Rocchio was pivotal at the plate all series but his defense every night really was a catalyst in helping his team win,” they tweeted.

Tiburones hadn’t won the LVBP championship in 38 years, despite having one of the most colorful fan bases in the South American country.

Thanks to Rocchio’s incredible balance, fielding, and throwing skills, they were able to finish the drought.

Rocchio was a star on defense, but he was also solid on offense which is what the Guardians wanted to see.

In the regular season with Tiburones, he hit .377/.457/.541 with a .998 OPS.

Then, he had a .766 OPS in the playoffs and a .728 mark in the Finals.

Given the fact he hit .247/.279/.321 with a .600 OPS in 23 MLB games in 2023, he has a lot to prove before being anointed the long-term starter at shortstop.

He had a great winter and is ready to show the best of his talent, though.

<

What a great experience. Nothing like pressure in front of a packed audience. You just don't get this kind of experience in minor league ball. Rocchio has to have the inside track to as the starting shortstop on opening day.

LVBP: Look at Brayan Rocchio's position on Miguel Rojas

The shortstop of Guardianes de Cleveland and Tiburones de la Guaira, Brayan Rocchio , is one of the most outstanding prospects within his organization, thanks to his outstanding performance at such a young age and having the skills both on the offensive side and as a defensive player, something that he has been able to demonstrate in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP).

The 22-year-old player became one of the top players responsible for the success of the Guairista team, who won the title of champions in the 2023/2024 edition to end a drought of more than 37 years without achieving this important distinction in Creole baseball.

Likewise, he has repeatedly made clear his desire to play in Venezuela, since it is a tournament that allows him to continue developing his physical skills and gain even more experiences at a professional level in one of the best winter leagues.

As if that were not enough, within the Tiburones organization, he has the privilege of sharing with more established players on the field of play, as is the case with his position partner, Miguel Rojas, who is one of the best offensive players according to The experts.

This relationship as teammates in their country has allowed him to consider Rojas as a fundamental part of his development in baseball and what his presence means for his career. “The best mentor,” he posted on his X account.

Without a doubt, Oswaldo Guillen's current team has the peace of mind of knowing that they have the present and the future of one of the most complex and demanding positions, such as short stops.

After an intense week of high level baseball in Miami, we have the four semifinalists who will compete on Feb. 8 for a place in the final on Friday.

Curaçao has managed to hang on to get into Semifinals. Their stunning win today against Puerto Rico has given them a place in Semifinals and knocked out one of the favorites coming into the competition, Puerto Rico.

Panama and Venezuela have also clinched spots in the semifinals. They will be joined by the Dominican Republic in the final four, which takes place tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 8.

As Panama and the Dominican Republic went head to head, it was two solo home runs that made the difference as Panama ground out a hard won win that sees them back on top of the heap, however briefly.

The Semifinals will take place on Thursday at 3 p.m. ET and 8 p.m. ET. The winning teams will move on to the final game on Friday at 8 p.m. ET and the losers will play for third place at 3 p.m.

Caribbean Series draws record attendance numbers at loanDepot Park

2.7.2024

The Caribbean Series “has been a success so far,” with an attendance at loanDepot Park “that has exceeded 30,000 spectators and a massive response from the Miami fan base,” according to Jorde Ebro of the MIAMI HERALD. Marlins President of Business Operations Caroline O’Connor has been “one of the forces behind the idea of bringing the Caribbean Series to loanDepot Park” and even she “has been surprised by the reception from the fans, even though the event has not yet entered its main phase.” When it comes to this event opening the door for more winter league games in Miami, O’Connor said, “I think we’ve proven we have the fan bases here. People want to come; they want to have fun and support these teams. So we would love to have additional games during the year.” When asked how to turn this type of attendance into a benefit for the Marlins, O’Connor said they are “promoting the Opening Day.” O'Connor: “We hope they come back and join us because there will be many Caribbean players on March 28.” When asked if there's an option to host the Caribbean Series again, O’Connor said, “At some point in the future we would love to host a tournament again. I think it’s already been announced that it won’t be until 2028. So I think that would be the first opportunity. But yes, we would love to organize it again and we have told the [Caribbean Professional Baseball] Confederation” (MIAMI HERALD, 2/6).

ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS:

DOMINICAN TODAY noted Saturday's game between the Criollos de Caguas of Puerto Rico and the Tigres del Licey of the Dominican Republic “etched its place in the record books of the 75-year-old tournament,” attracting a “remarkable attendance of 35,972 spectators.” The game “stands as the most attended Caribbean Series game in the history of the event,” surpassing the previous record set last year during the match between Venezuela and Panama, which drew 35,691 spectators at the Simón Bolívar Stadium in Caracas. The average attendance per game during the first three full days of this edition of the Caribbean Series “has been an impressive 13,528 people, closely mirroring the Marlins’ average attendance in the 2023 season” (14,356) (DOMINICAN TODAY, 2/5).

Caribbean Series in Miami so far has had close games, largest crowd in event’s history

The Caribbean Series, held this year at Miami’s loanDepot park, is a little more than halfway through the round-robin portion of its tournament. All seven teams have played either three or four of their six games so far. The four teams with the best records after the round concludes Wednesday advance to the semifinals. And the early returns have been good. The games have been competitive, with six of 12 games played so far decided by two runs or fewer. The crowds have been boisterous, including one game setting the record for highest attendance in Caribbean Series history. And expect things to amplify even more when the tournament moves to the semifinals on Thursday and then the championship and third-place games on Friday.

For now, here are some of the highlights through the first four days.

THE MAIN THREE TEAMS HAVE DRAWN BIG CROWDS

As one would expect, the three round-robin games that featured any combination of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Venezuela have drawn the largest crowds so far in the tournament.

The Dominican Republic’s 5-2 win over Puerto Rico on Saturday night had an announced crowd of 35,972 — the largest attendance for a single game in Caribbean Series history.

Meanwhile, Puerto Rico’s 6-2 win over Venezuela on Sunday afternoon drew 32,092.

Venezuela’s 3-1 win over the Dominican Republic, the nightcap on Thursday, had an announced attendance of 27,338. That’s a combined 95,402 over those three games.

The other nine games of the tournament so far? The crowd has been noticeably lighter. Four had announced attendances below 10,000 and the average announced attendance for those nine was just 9,455.
