Guardians drop split-squad games to Giants and Cubs as Tanner Bibee, Logan Allen make spring debuts

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Tanner Bibee struck out three of the nine batters he faced in his spring training debut, but allowed a two run home run to Giants outfielder LaMonte Wade in the first inning as the Guardians dropped a split-squad game, 6-5, to San Francisco on Sunday at Goodyear Ballpark.
Bibee walked leadoff batter Jung Hoo Lee and struck out Marco Luciano before Wade swatted the second pitch hs saw over the fence in right center for a 2-0 Giants lead. The Guardians answered with a Ramon Laureano RBI single in the second and a solo home run by José Ramírez in the third that tied the score at 2-2. It was the first home run of the spring for Ramírez.
Hunter Gaddis struck out three Giants batters in 1 2/3 innings, allowing a run on an RBI single by Lee. But Cleveland pulled in front in the fourth on RBI base hits by Andrés Giménez and Josh Naylor. It was the first run driven in of the spring by Giménez and Naylor’s third.
Nick Ahmed evened the score in the sixth with a solo home run, his second, off Sam Hentges and Trenton Brooks’ RBI single off Anthony Banda put the Giants in front in the seventh. But Cleveland’s Joe Lampe scored Alexfri Planez with an RBI ground out in the bottom of the seventh before Ismael Munguia’s leadoff home run in the bottom of the ninth put San Francisco in front for good.
Giménez, Naylor, Laureano and Planez finished with two hits apiece. Daniel Schneemann, who replaced Gabriel Arias at shortstop in the sixth, made a sensational diving stop on a ground ball up the middle by David Villar in the seventh. Schneemann threw to Kahlil Watson at second base to force Wade Meckler who was aboard after a bunt single.
Schneemann’s deep drive to the wall in left field in the ninth with Planez aboard nearly gave the Guardians a walk-off win, but Munguia ran the ball down just before it left the ballpark.
Cubs 5, Guardians (SS) 3
Cleveland jumped out to a three-run lead, but Chicago rallied to score five straight and hand the Guardians’ split squad a loss at Sloan Park in Mesa, Ariz.
Deyvison De Los Santos collected a pair of hits, including an RBI single in the first inning. Tyler Freeman added an RBI single in the second and Austin Hedges scored on a wild pitch by Kyle Hendricks in the third.
For Freeman, it marked his third consecutive game with a hit, and for De Los Santos it marked his first RBI in 15 spring training at-bats.
Guardians lefty Logan Allen pitched two scoreless innings in his Cactus League debut, not allowing a hit and striking out a pair with one walk while facing six batters. Xzavion Curry allowed a run on five hits in three innings, including a solo home run to Chicago’s Miles Mastrobuoni in the third.
Tim Herrin gave up a solo home run and struck out a pair of Cubs batters in the sixth and Anthony Gose took the loss after allowing a two-run home run to David Bote in the seventh.
Cleveland’s Angel Martinez extended his hitting streak to six games with a double in the second. Hedges picked up his second spring hit with a double in the third.
Next: The Guardians have a scheduled off day Monday before returning to Cactus League action on Tuesday when they host the Mariners at Goodyear Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET. Righty Gavin Williams (0-0, 0.00) will make his second spring start. The game will be webcast on on CLEGuardians.com.
