Since this week had Columbus day, and since the Tribe did so well......a history lesson-

As we were taught, Christopher Columbus was searching of a shorter route to the orient and India. He was totally lost, when he landed in the Caribbean (Haiti). He thought he was in India and the natives were Indians, that's how they got their name.

The actual names of the natives were the Tainos.

So, think about it instead of the Cleveland Indians we could have been the Cleveland Tainos!

Looks like Salazar isn't on the ALCS roster.

Salazar unlikely to be ready to pitch in ALCS

Recovering righty working out in in Arizona, but time isn't on his side

CLEVELAND --

The probability of Danny Salazar throwing a pitch for the Indians this postseason continues to dwindle. During Wednesday's workout, manager Terry Francona and pitching coach Mickey Callaway deemed it extremely unlikely that Salazar would make the cut for the American League Championship Series roster.

That makes it a safe bet that the right-hander's name will not be included when Cleveland does reveal its ALCS roster before Game 1 on Friday, which starts at 8 p.m. ET on TBS in the U.S. and Sportsnet (English) and RDS (French) in Canada.

"I don't think he's progressed quite to the point where [he's ready]," Francona said. "He's doing pretty good. He's not back yet where he's throwing all his pitches or letting it go 100 percent. I think if we ask him to do that, he might be reaching right now. We've been pretty vocal about the first priority is getting him back healthy. I think this proves it."

Salazar, who made his first All-Star team this year after a stellar first half, has not pitched since Sept. 9 due to a right forearm strain. He's also dealt with shoulder and elbow issues this season, which ended with him averaging fewer than four innings across his final seven starts. If Salazar were to return to this postseason, it would be as a reliever, not as a rotation option.
Callaway noted that Salazar is scheduled to face batters in a simulated-game setting on Thursday in Arizona at the team's Spring Training complex. Salazar still is limited to throwing only fastballs and changeups, as it was his curveball that led to discomfort in his forearm.

Given that the ALCS begins Friday, Callaway said time is not on Salazar's side.

"It's getting late in the game for this series," Callaway said.

Salazar is a very slow rehabber.

OR the Indians are overly careful with him.

Or both.

Well I guess it was an actual injury and not him just being overly cautious. That's too bad.

Decisions, decisions: Cleveland Indians not quite ready to name ALCS roster
By Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com

on October 13, 2016 at 7:55 PM, updated October 13, 2016 at 8:27 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Three catchers or an extra reliever?

Those are some of the decisions still facing the Indians before they open the American League Championship Series on Friday night at 8:08 against Toronto at Progressive Field.

The Indians and Blue Jays have until 10 a.m. Friday to name their 25-man rosters. Manager Terry Francona said Thursday evening that the Indians weren't quite there yet.

"I think we just want to take a little bit more time," said Francona. "We just want to walk through (carrying) three catchers or an extra pitcher. That kind of stuff."

The Indians carried three catchers – Roberto Perez, Yan Gomes and Chris Gimenez – in the American League Division Series. They swept the Red Sox in the best-of-five series with Perez catching all three games.

The ALCS, however, is a best-of-seven series and with a depleted rotation because of injuries, the Indians might want to carry an extra reliever. Especially since Francona has already declared Game 4 a bullpen day with rookie Mike Clevinger scheduled to start.

Corey Kluber, Trevor Bauer and Josh Tomlin are scheduled to start the first three games. Francona will be forced to go with a bullpen game in Game 4 because of injuries to starters Danny Salazar and Carlos Carrasco.

If the Indians do go with another reliever, some options just rejoined the team from Goodyear, Ariz. Lefty Ryan Merritt, right-hander Joe Colon and utility man Erik Gonzalez were training at the team's spring training site in case the Indians advanced past the ALDS.

boy I would place Colon near the bottom of my list, well at least he'd be ahead of Gascan Adams and not quite ready for primetime Garner. I guess they already had Cody Anderson on board, so maybe there aren't that many other candidates. Merritt would be useful as a second lefty who can pitch multiple innings. Armstrong seems more effective than Colon although his command can be all over the place. Crockett has not impressed since his first season 2 years ago.

I would go with Merritt, can go multiple innings and does not walk many. We are facing Estrada tonight and like Merritt he has 88-90 fastball and good change up. Estrada is quite effective I believe he is a leader in least hits given up in 9 innings, was last year also. You do not have to have a rocket to pitch well. Just hope our batters have some patience and are not amped up too much.

Ryan Merritt in, Chris Gimenez out: Cleveland Indians opt for extra pitcher on ALCS roster

Zack Meisel, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Indians went with the extra pitcher over the third catcher.

The club has included rookie southpaw Ryan Merritt on its American League Championship Series roster. He'll replace catcher Chris Gimenez, which leaves Roberto Perez and Yan Gomes to handle the duties behind the plate. Perez played every inning of the division series against Boston.

The rest of the roster remains the same.

The Tribe will carry 13 position players and 12 pitchers when it begins its battle against the Blue Jays at 8 p.m. on Friday at Progressive Field.

The Indians, unsure of how much Gomes could play, included all three catchers on the ALDS roster. Gomes broke a bone in his right wrist in mid-September when he was struck by a pitch during a minor-league rehab assignment. He made enough progress in his recovery to deliver a home run in the Tribe's final regular season game. Gomes and Gimenez participated in throwing drills behind the plate on Thursday night.

"I think for the last couple days, maybe even weeks, it's been back to normal," Gomes said Thursday. "They told me I was always going to feel some discomfort until the 6-to-8 week mark. Until then, the bone is still broken but everything around there is healing and it's been feeling really good."
Yan Gomes makes Indians' ALDS roster

Gomes said he is no longer "favoring" the injured area or "holding back" when swinging.

"I think for a few weeks now, I've been able to to take a full swing," he said. "It doesn't really hurt that much anymore."

Merritt gives manager Terry Francona another relief option, with a bullpen day looming in Game 4. Mike Clevinger is slated to start that contest, but he isn't expected to log more than a few innings. Merritt tossed five solid innings against Kansas City in his first major-league start on Sept. 30. He and several teammates spent the last week throwing bullpen sessions and simulated games at the team's complex in Goodyear, Arizona.

Here's the full roster:

Pitchers: Cody Allen, Bryan Shaw, Andrew Miller, Dan Otero, Zach McAllister, Corey Kluber, Trevor Bauer, Josh Tomlin, Mike Clevinger, Cody Anderson, Jeff Manship, Ryan Merritt

Position players: Yan Gomes, Roberto Perez, Carlos Santana, Mike Napoli, Jason Kipnis, Francisco Lindor, Jose Ramirez, Michael Martinez, Brandon Guyer, Coco Crisp, Rajai Davis, Tyler Naquin, Lonnie Chisenhall

Giminez will probably be working as an assistant coach or bullpen catcher.

No brainer because there's obviously a very good chance game 4 is a bullpen game.

I just saw BARON's post and found this:

CLEVELAND, Ohio– The Cleveland Indians tweeted out Friday afternoon that pitcher Trevor Bauer was pushed back to ALCS Game 3 due to a finger injury.

The Indians said he suffered a laceration to his pinky finger and needed stitches. Bauer is scheduled to start Game 3 at Toronto on Monday, October 17.

Josh Tomlin will now start Game 2, on Saturday, October 15.

Indians ace Corey Kluber will start Game 1 of the AL Championship Series against Toronto tonight.
