Panama cruises past Chinese Taipei for 1st Classic win

TAICHUNG, Taiwan -- A sellout crowd rolled into Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium on Wednesday night to watch its home team, Chinese Taipei, square off against Panama.

Cheerleaders danced on dugouts, fans banged thundersticks and call-and-response chants rang out from behind home plate all the way to the outfield seats mid at-bat. If you thought Cuba’s Horn Guy was loud, this will sound like a 15,540-piece orchestra playing right in your living room.

Despite the electric atmosphere by the home crowd, Panama’s experienced bats and fantastic defense proved too much for Chinese Taipei. Maybe it thrived off the noise. Manager Luis Ortiz’s squad took down the hosts, 12-5.

When asked how Panama was able to withstand the noise, Ortiz said, "Block the outside noise by putting points on the board. After you score, that intensity is going to be gone."

The Panamanians did most of their damage in a five-run fourth inning and six-run sixth. One of the stars of the show was Panama’s first baseman and No. 9 hitter Jahdiel Santamaria. He had two doubles, two RBIs and one run. The 35-year-old has had a long baseball career, playing A-ball with the Yankees and Braves from 2006-10 and participating in numerous international contests for his home country.

Jonathan Araúz, a Mets Spring Training non-roster invitee, plated two runs on a bases-loaded single in the sixth to put the Panamanians up, 8-1, and then after an RBI single by Rubén Tejada, Erasmo Caballero really blew things open with a two-run single to put his country up by 10. Taipei scored again in the bottom of the inning to cut its deficit to nine, but then Araúz doubled in another run in the top of the seventh to push Panama's lead back to 10.

The lone bright spot for Chinese Taipei was a booming home run by Nien-Ting Wu to avoid succumbing to a 10-run mercy rule in the seventh. It brought the raucous crowd back for a moment, but then that was it.

"They played well, starting the game," said Ortiz. "They can play defense. They are aggressive. They make contact. But head to head, we beat them. That's the bottom line."

Panama’s pitching was strong -- Mets farmhand Humberto Mejía started and gave up just two hits in two innings pitched, while five more relievers combined to give up just five runs. But the defense was where Panama sparkled. Tejada dazzled at short, Jose Caballero made a fence-hugging play down the left-field line and the greatest catch of the night -- and of the tournament so far -- came on a collision play in right-center field by Luis Castillo. You’ll have to watch it a few times to make sure you saw it right.

"That was a hell of a catch," Ortiz said. "But he's a good ballplayer. I know these kids. I scouted these kids, so I know he has played for me previously. Also very good outfielder, used to be a center fielder, but now he's a little bit older. ... That was a hell of a play. My team can play defense. We can pitch, and we can play defense."

Dayán Frías will be with Colombia in the World Baseball Classic. The 20-year-old shortstop from Cartagena, belonging to the Cleveland Guardians organization, had a good performance with the Vaqueros in the Caribbean Series, starring in the fourth triple play in the history of that event, and is now one of Jolbert Alexis' players for Cabrera on the national team.

Frías spoke with Eugenio Baena Calvo in Arizona.

Are you in your moment for a World Classic?

Dayán Frías:

"I am preparing myself for what is to come, mentally and physically, we are in a good moment, in a good place, let's hope that things turn out well and that God is with us all the time."

What has Orlando Cabrera corrected you about your work at short stop?

«They are small details, very minimal, that make a big difference on and off the field. Small things that we are working to improve day by day to perform well.

He said he started out like you, and then he definitely played to his style...

“These are things that one has to learn, everyone has their way of playing and their style, something that benefited him was the way he played. I have mine, thank God the results are paying off and we are on the right track.

How do you feel defensively, do you feel confident?

"I feel that my body and my mind, and everything is fine right now, that we can give a good performance for the team, and that is what is expected."

Offensively?

«Tremendous, I have been working a lot on that, little by little, I have improved a lot and I feel very comfortable at the plate. I've improved where I wanted to improve, on base, and I think we're going to be fine."

Do you think of Urias, the starter for Mexico?

"No. We think about winning, it doesn't matter who is on the mound, whoever the rival is, we are going to go out and kill ourselves against whoever it is every day. It's the most important thing, perform well, always play hard, do the little things and win."

Not even in his curve?

"Nothing, nothing. We will win".

TAICHUNG, Taiwan -- Teams before had been warned of it, and although Netherlands manager Hensley Meulens said his squad wouldn’t be bothered by the deafening Chinese Taipei crowd noise in its Pool A matchup, he did have some idea of what was coming.

“It's going to be present all game, and it's going to be loud and it's going to be nonstop,” he said before the game. “And we've just got to focus on what we've got to do to win the game tonight.”

From Pitch 1 to Yu Chang’s epic grand slam to every hit and strike and walk, the fans lived and died with every pitch. The combination of that support in the stands and the talent on the field carried Chinese Taipei to a 9-5 victory Saturday and a big-time upset of Europe’s biggest baseball power, the Netherlands.

The Dutch struck first in their at-bat of the game on a Didi Gregorius RBI single to left field. There were also a couple of passed balls and a dropped popup by catcher Kungkuan Giljegiljaw in the frame. It wasn’t an ideal start.

Chinese Taipei went scoreless in its half of the first, but in the second, manager Yueh-Ping Lin’s crew went off for five runs. It loaded the bases with no outs and CPBL’s 2022 Triple Crown winner Li Lin tied things up with a single up the middle.

And then, with the bases still loaded, Chang -- one of the heroes from Chinese Taipei’s win over Italy -- stepped up to the plate with the crowd in a frenzy. Drums rattled, Thunderstix clapped and Chang sent one to the moon -- a 5-1 advantage for Chinese Taipei.

The Netherlands came back to score one in the third on a Gregorius groundout to make it 5-2, and it looked like it could get one or two more, but reliever Che-Yuan Wu came in to retire Josh Palacios on a flyout. It wouldn’t have mattered anyway, because Intercontinental Stadium’s home team for the week wasn’t done plating runs.

Taipei loaded the bases for the second straight inning. Kun-Yu Chiang knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Tsung-Che Cheng bunted in another. In the fourth, you guessed it, Taipei scored again on a long Chieh-Hsien Chen triple. And it could’ve scored more, if not for a fantastic Jurickson Profar-to-Xander Bogaerts relay on a Giljegiljaw double into the left-field corner.

The Netherlands posted a couple of runs in the eighth on a Juremi Profar single and a pinch-hit single by Wladimir Balentien, but that was all it could muster. Taipei added another run in the eighth, and when the final out rang out in the ninth, its roaring crowd had witnessed the greatest upset of Pool A thus far.

Chinese Taipei and the Netherlands are now both 2-1. Chinese Taipei controls its own destiny and can advance to the quarterfinals with a win against Cuba on Sunday (11 p.m. ET, Sat., FS2). While the Netherlands, which faces Italy on Sunday (7 a.m., FS2), also controls its own fate and can move on to the quarterfinals with a win. Panama is done with play at 2-2.

However, if both Chinese Taipei and the Netherlands lose, there'll be a five-way tie in Pool A with each team at 2-2, and the top two squads will be settled by tiebreaking procedures.

If either Chinese Taipei or the Netherlands loses its final game of pool play -- and the other wins -- the team that won would advance, while there will be a three-way tie for second that includes Panama (who completed pool play at 2-2) and two other to-be-determined teams, which would also bring the tiebreaker scenarios into play.

Each team faces the other four in round-robin play, with the pool's winner and runner-up advancing to the quarterfinals in Tokyo against the top teams from Pool B.

Former Cleveland Guardian Yu Chang is raking in the World Baseball Classic

Don't get any ideas about the Cleveland Guardians letting go of him too soon, but still, Yu Chang is absolutely raking in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

As you might remember, Chang was actually the Opening Day second basemen for the Guardians last season. A whole lot can change over the course of a year, and Chang struggled, striking out seven times in his ten at-bats to start the season, eventually leading to his release. In his four scattered seasons with Cleveland, Chang hit .208/.265/.372 with ten home runs, 16 doubles, 46 RBI, and a 71 OPS+ in 358 plate appearances.

He's always had tantalizing power and talent; it just never materialized in the majors. Chang went on to play for three other teams in 2022 (Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, and Boston), and now finds himself as one of the most clutch hitters in the Chinese Taipei lineup.

Chang hit the game-tying home run against Italy in their eventual 11-7 victory, and crushed a grand slam against the Netherlands on Saturday in the second inning that set the tone for their 9-5 win, putting them right in the mix to advance to the quarterfinals. Chang is now hitting .500 (6-for-12) in the first three games of the tourney, with two home runs and seven RBI.
