Wells Fargo uncovers up to 1.4 million more fake accounts

August 31, 2017: 12:34 PM ET

Wells Fargo uncovered up to 1.4 million more fake accounts after digging deeper into the bank's broken sales culture.

The findings show that Wells Fargo's problems are worse than the bank previously admitted to when the scandal began almost a year ago.

Wells Fargo (WFC) now says it has found a total of up to 3.5 million potentially fake bank and credit card accounts, up from its earlier tally of approximately 2.1 million. In other words, there are two-thirds more fake accounts than previously realized.

The additional fake accounts were discovered by a previously announced analysis that went back to January 2009 and that further reviewed the original May 2011 to mid-2015 period.

About 190,000 accounts were slapped with unnecessary fees for these accounts, Wells Fargo said. That's up from 130,000 previously.

Wells Fargo also discovered a new problem: thousands of customers were also enrolled in online bill pay without their authorization. The review found 528,000 potentially unauthorized online bill pay enrollments.

Related: Wells Fargo accused of ripping off mom-and-pop shops

Wells Fargo blamed unrealistic sales goals placed on employees for encouraging the unauthorized bill pay and bank account openings.

"We apologize to everyone who was harmed by unacceptable sales practices that occurred in our retail bank," Wells Fargo CEO Tim Sloan said in a statement.

Wells Fargo is trying to make things right by scrapping its sales goals, installing new management and paying out millions in refunds.

Wells Fargo said it will now pay a total of $6.1 million to refund customers for unauthorized bank and credit card accounts, up from $3.3 million previously.

The bank also promised to pay $910,000 to refund customers for the 528,000 potentially improper online bill pay enrollments. The review of online bill pay was required by the September 2016 settlement.

Additionally, Wells Fargo has agreed to a $142 million national class action settlement to cover fake accounts that were opened back to 2002. That settlement received preliminary approval from a federal judge in July.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, a fierce critic of Wells Fargo, called the discovery of more fake accounts "unbelievable" on Twitter. The Democrat renewed her calls for Congress to hold more Wells Fargo hearings and for the Federal Reserve to remove board members who served during the scandal.

"I don't know what they're waiting for," Warren said.

Wells Fargo declined to comment on Warren's tweets, but said its management and board have "taken many steps" to "make things right," including installing new leadership and holding executives accountable by clawing back compensation.

The Federal Reserve didn't respond to requests for comment on Warren's tweet. Federal Reserve chief Janet Yellen said in July that the Fed does have the power to oust directors "if it proves appropriate."

Selfishness should have limits. Indifference to others' needs is not good policy. The GOP either doesn't understand those things or simply does not care. Apparently, nor do their cheerleader supporters. The coming losses from reduced infrastructure investment, greater pollution, social unrest from the growing number of poor and medically uninsured (and from those who the GOP is -- once again -- setting up for ever-increasing health-care insurance costs) will eventually bite back. It is a foreseeable consequence of the decisions Republicans have made this year. So, now they will endeavor planning to shift the blame elsewhere rather than to fix the mess they are creating. Party over country. Cannot even keep their lies consistent as they struggle to disown every broken promise and misrepresentation they made along the way to get this "win" for their own already-overstuffed pockets. Pathetic.

This is an edit just collecting some examples of articles that actually analyze what Republicans are doing, so that once they happen, Hillbilly cannot pretend liberals, experts and anti-trump Republicans are making these things up after the fact. Buddy, history will show again that it is the people who believe anything Trump says (and every new lie he substitutes for his previously exposed ones) who are the "Kool-aid drinking tools." Cripes, you cannot even acknowledge the well-documented trail of self-contradictory lies that Trump has progressed through over the past two years and the constant flip-flopping act Republicans have had to dance to cover his tracks. Why should we trust your views on any of this? Because you and Trump say so? Because you cite statistics on the economy that simply show that the the 8-years of growth that Obama and the fed reserve put in motion continues, but now with faster stock market rises caused by promised (and now delivered) give-aways to big business interests on the naive hope that super-capitalists will suddenly become populists now that that have even more money that they can refuse to share with employees earning first-world wages?

I make my living catching big companies that cheat the Government and the tax-paying public at every opportunity. That sort of behavior is the normal course for unregulated business. We are never short of work. Big business interests simply don't care about you, Hillbilly. Without reasonable government regulation and oversight big business cares only about enriching themselves and their share-holders in the short term while doing the bare minimum to keep the peace with the working class. They are as fickle as the politicians you decry, but they don't need your vote to stay in power. They just need to keep a thumb on Republican politicians, keep Fox and friends spouting their propaganda, keep packing the courts with judges that favor the rich over the poor and corporations over real people, and keep folks like you content with getting whatever spillover from their excess trickles down to you personally. Wake up, Hillbilly. The sugar-high from your Kool-aid binge with Trump and other syncophants to big business interests is not good for the long-term health of the nation as a whole.

Kool-aid drinking group-thinking tools can keep whining. American people will keep winning.

Manufacturing growth is accelerating into the end of the year, defying expectations that recent growth would slow, according to data from the Philadelphia Federal Reserve.

The Philly Fed’s Manufacturing Business Outlook Survey soared up to a reading of 26.2 in December, up from 22.7. Economists had been expecting a slight downtick to 21.8.

The survey measures factory conditions in the mid-Atlantic region. All readings above zero signal improvement. December’s big jump shows that conditions are not only improving, they are improving faster than expected.

“Indexes for general activity new orders and shipments were all positive this month and increased from their readings last month,” the Philly Fed said Thursday. “The firms also reported continued expansion of employment.”

Nearly 41 percent of manufacturing firms surveyed reported an increase in activity in December, up from 35 percent in November. The indexes for new orders and shipments also rose. The new order rise is particularly significant because it signals that the manufacturing expansion is likely to continue in the future.

Manufacturing employment continued to expand, albeit at a slightly slower pace. Manufacturing employment in the Philly Fed index turned positive in November 2016–the month Donald Trump was elected president–and has now expanded for 13 consecutive months. Companies remain optimistic about the expansion of employment over the next six months, with 42 percent saying they plan to add jobs over the period. The same share said they plan increased capital spending over the next sixth months.

There are a thousand things I can't stand about trump, maybe more, but the things that upset me most are the lies, the tweets, and taking all the credit for what was passed along to him like the economy and jobs markets. I posted this one twice previously but it bears repeating because the guy continues to take credit for an economy he inherited from Obama.

Obama's biggest parting gift to Trump may be the economy. You know how much trump and the GOP hates to talk about that one.

The United States has added jobs for 85 straight months, the longest streak on record.

If my math is correct, 85-10 (months of trump)=75. Does this mean that 75 months (6 1/2 years...85%) of jobs added came under the Obama administration?

I think it will be nearly impossible for trump to top the 6 1/2 year growth rate.

What a mess trump inherited !

"Our most important priority is sustained economic growth, and I think we can absolutely get to sustained 3 to 4 percent GDP, and that is absolutely critical for the country," Steven Mnuchin, Trump's choice for Treasury secretary, told CNBC on Wednesday.

But if GDP growth alone is the benchmark for Americans' financial well-being, the Trump administration will inherit an economy that is well on its way to fulfilling his campaign promises.

Today, some eight years after the worst financial collapse since the Great Depression, many forecasters see the long-overdue recovery finally picking up steam. "The economy is starting to hit on almost all cylinders," Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors, said after reviewing the latest report on GDP growth.

The Commerce Department on Tuesday boosted its estimate of third-quarter gross domestic product to a 3.2 percent annual rate, up from the previous estimate of 2.9 percent. That's just 8-tenths of a percent shy of Trump's GDP growth target.

What a mess!!

For his part, Obama has vigorously defended his economic record over the last eight years, starting with his administration's response to the worst economic crisis in nearly a century. That record includes signing the 2009 Recovery Act, reversing a wave of layoffs that peaked at more than 800,000 in a single month.

"Anybody who says we are not absolutely better off today than we were just seven years ago — they're not leveling with you," Obama said in February. "They're not telling the truth. By almost every economic measure, we are significantly better off."

Defying Trump, over 120 countries at U.N. condemn Jerusalem decision

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - More than 120 countries defied President Donald Trump on Thursday and voted in favor of a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for the United States to drop its recent recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Trump had threatened to cut off financial aid to countries that voted in favor. [ Good Luck with that ] A total of 128 countries backed the resolution, which is non-binding, nine voted against and 35 abstained. Twenty-one countries did not cast a vote. Six bodies hung from bridges near Mexico's Los Cabos tourist resort

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The bodies of six men were found hanging from three different bridges near the Mexican tourist resort of Los Cabos on the Baja California peninsula on Wednesday, local authorities said. The authorities did not give details on what happened to the men, but drug gangs often hang the bodies of their murdered victims in public to intimidate rivals. Drug gang violence is set to make 2017 Mexico’s deadliest year in modern history. Two bodies were found on a bridge in Las Veredas, near Los Cabos International Airport, and two on a different bridge on the highway between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, local prosecutors said in a statement. Nikki Haley is holding a "Save The Date" party for all the UN countries that voted for the US Recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's Capital

Defying Trump, over 120 countries at U.N. condemned the Jerusalem decision.

It was adopted with more than a two-thirds majority of the 172 nations that voted — 128 nations supported the measure, nine voted against it and 35 countries abstained (among them Mexico and Canada - probably for trade reasons).

The United States and Israel were joined in voting "no" by Guatemala, Honduras, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Togo and Palau.

Looks like Guatemala, Honduras, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Togo and Palau will be the only ones partying.

Looks like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Afghanistan, China, etc won't be coming.

I guess 172 nations aren't interested in trump bit coins.

Trump had threatened to cut off financial aid to countries that voted in favor of the resolution.

Look! This is embarrassing! Degrading to say the least for trump and by extension, the USA. trump being trump is losing its flavor. I wouldn't be surprised if trump recants like he always does, soon. Fake news!

The monies we send to these countries aren't for parties. The monies are distributed, in large part, for our national security and trying to keep the peace. Countries are not putting up with trump's rhetoric.

In victory for Trump, judge tosses suit on foreign payments

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A federal judge in New York on Thursday threw out a lawsuit that had accused President Donald Trump of violating the U.S. Constitution by accepting foreign payments through his hotels and other businesses, handing him a major victory on an issue that has dogged him since even before he took office in January. Though other lawsuits remain pending that make similar claims, the ruling by U.S. District Judge George Daniels is the first to weigh the merits of the U.S. Constitution’s anti-corruption provisions as they apply to Trump, a wealthy businessman who as president regularly visits his own hotels, resorts and golf clubs.

Myanmar has detained at least 29 journalists in the 20 months since Suu Kyi came to power. Trump and China: 2018 could get nasty

The United States vs. China was the 2017 trade battle that never materialized. But 2018 could be a different story. ....The initial trade talks between the world's two largest economies, which began after Trump and Xi hit it off in Florida in April, fell apart without meaningful results.....The U.S. president on Monday cast China in a harsh light as he laid out his vision for national security. Trump's newly unveiled strategy identified China and Russia as U.S. rivals that are "attempting to erode American security and prosperity," and he accused Beijing of unfair trade practices.....Trump faces a huge challenge in persuading Beijing to stop aggressively boosting its domestic industries and to do more to open its own giant markets without setting off a trade war that hurts American jobs. Trump gave up one major tool for influencing China right after taking office when he yanked the U.S. out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a vast free trade agreement covering 12 countries that President Barack Obama had spearheaded in an effort to strengthen U.S. leadership in Asia and the Americas....."The Chinese government is jittery again," said Song Guoyou, an expert in Chinese economic diplomacy at Fudan University in Shanghai. He also predicts that next year will be "the real start of turbulence in China-U.S. trade relations." A big part of the problem, experts say, is Trump's habit of focusing on the $309 billion U.S. trade deficit with China and not the broader economic relationship between the countries.

8.8 million sign up for Obamacare in strong showing

Obamacare remains pretty popular with many Americans, despite President Trump and Republicans' repeated attempts to kill it.

Some 8.8 million people have signed up for 2018 coverage on the federal exchange during an open enrollment season that was half the length of prior years and far less promoted, the Trump administration said Thursday. That's only 400,000 fewer than signed up on healthcare.gov during open enrollment a year ago. Nearly 2.4 million consumers were new to the exchanges, while more than 6.4 million continued their coverage during the period, which ran from Nov. 1 through Dec. 15. Traffic was heavy in the final days. More than 4.1 million people selected plans in the last six days, including those who were automatically renewed. Unlike in prior years, the Trump administration didn't extend the enrollment deadline, though it did give people who couldn't get through to the call center a little more time to sign up. These folks were not included in Thursday's figures.

Report: Hundreds of EPA employees leave under Trump

Washington (CNN)Hundreds of Environmental Protection Agency employees have exited their posts at the agency over the course of President Donald Trump's first year in office, a report by the New York Times and ProPublica said Friday. The Trump administration has touted efforts to roll back regulations at the agency, and an internal memo obtained by CNN in April revealed a buyout program that was aimed at curbing employment. The EPA, along with other government agencies, was placed on a hiring freeze, which also had left 350 positions open as of April, CNN previously reported. The Times and ProPublica reported that the departures were buyouts, retirements and individuals quitting, but totaled more than 700 employees, including more than 200 scientists. In April, CNN reported that John O'Grady, president of AFGE Council 238, the union that represents EPA employees, said the Trump administration's goal was to cut "at least 3,100 full-time employees."

China Gears Up to Reduce Impact of US Tax Cut

BEIJING — Chinese companies with international ambitions are caught in a serious dilemma by the U.S. move to cut corporate tax rates. The move has made the U.S. an attractive destination for Chinese companies facing very high taxes and other restrictions at home. On the other hand, they face the risk of being punished by Chinese authorities who are opposed to “unnecessary” overseas investments. Earlier this week, China wrapped up a top-level annual economic policymaking conference, with a three-year pledge to “fight financial risks.” Though there was no specific mention of the U.S. tax reform, it was clear that Chinese authorities are gearing up to counter any external risks to the domestic economy.....“So perhaps they view this as an opportunity and more Chinese firms will then look to invest in the United States but keep in mind that the Trump administration is also at the same time going through a significant, a potentially significant tightening of foreign investment rules, the CFIUS process, which will clearly make it more difficult for many Chinese firms to at least takeover or buy American companies.”.....China has seen massive investments by U.S. companies, which is why it might be seriously affected if American companies begin to take advantage of this tax offer.....“There is some thinking (in China) that U.S. firms are going to pull their profits out of China and repatriate to the U.S. At least that is the fear, one of the fears in China,” Balding said, “I personally think that is a relatively unfounded fear but it does exist and it is not entirely without rationality.”.....Foreign companies generally invest in China because they see it as a proper destination for long term presence......“With that said, it would not surprise me at all if you see some U.S. corporations trying to get out of China back to the United States. But to be honest, I would be surprised if it was a significant amount,” he said. “Tax is only a small factor affecting business decisions. Just because it moved from 40 percent to 25 percent does not mean that business decisions on where to invest will actually be fundamentally changed,” said Shen Yajie, policy analyst for finance at Beijing based consulting firm, China Policy.

Shots fired at DMZ as North Korean soldier defects to South

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korean guards fired warning shots across the heavily militarized border with North Korea on Thursday as a soldier from the North defected in thick fog, complicating efforts to ease tensions over Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programs. A South Korean defense ministry official said up to 20 warning shots were fired as North Korean troops approached too near the “military demarcation line” at the demilitarized zone (DMZ), apparently in search of the missing soldier. Thursday’s defection came about five weeks after a North Korean soldier suffered critical gunshot wounds during a defection dash across the border........Two North Korean civilians were also found in a fishing boat on Wednesday and had sought to defect, officials in the South said. That brings the total number of North Koreans who have defected by taking dangerous routes either directly across the border or by sea to 15 so far this year, including two other soldiers. That is three times the number last year, according to South Korean officials......Seoul says more than 880 North Koreans have defected to the rich, democratic South so far this year, but the vast majority have taken a less dangerous route through China.

Arab states believe U.S. aid secure despite defying Trump Jerusalem move

AMMAN/CAIRO (Reuters) - Leading Arab allies threatened with cuts in aid by Donald Trump said on Friday they had no choice but to defy the U.S. president over his recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and did not believe he would follow through. More than 120 countries, including every Arab nation, voted at the U.N. General Assembly late on Thursday to urge the United States to withdraw its decision, announced earlier this month. Trump threatened to cut off financial aid to countries that voted in favor of the U.N. resolution, drafted by Egypt and supported by all members of the U.N. Security Council except Washington......He repeated his threat on Friday, writing on Twitter: “After having foolishly spent $7 trillion in the Middle East, it is time to start rebuilding our country!” In Egypt and Jordan, among the top recipients of U.S. aid but long the most heavily invested in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, Trump’s threats were not taken seriously enough to backtrack on firm opposition to the U.S. move.

Homegrown African Climate Model Predicts Future Rains — and Risks

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA — One big problem confronts Africa as it tries to predict how its weather patterns will shift in the face of climate change: Almost all the climate models for the continent were created in the United States or Europe. Now South African climate researcher Francois Engelbrecht has changed that by developing a climate model for Africa, in Africa......The model aims to "generate reliable projections of future climate change over Africa."........Those projections include figuring out which areas will get more or less rainfall — "a key to adapting agriculture successfully" — or looking at where African grasslands might give way to thickets as more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere drives the growth of trees......."We know that climate is changing, risks are changing, including changes in the risk of heat waves, flooding, drought, tropical cyclones, changes in growing seasons [and] rising temperatures," said Rachel James, a visiting climate researcher at the University of Cape Town. "People everywhere will need to adapt to these changing conditions in the years and decades to come," she told Reuters.

Russian Hackers Targeted More Than 200 Journalists Globally

PARIS — Russian television anchor Pavel Lobkov was in the studio getting ready for his show when jarring news flashed across his phone: Some of his most intimate messages had just been published to the web.......The Associated Press found that Lobkov was targeted by the hacking group known as Fancy Bear in March 2015, nine months before his messages were leaked. He was one of at least 200 journalists, publishers and bloggers targeted by the group as early as mid-2014 and as recently as a few months ago........The AP identified journalists as the third-largest group on a hacking hit list obtained from cybersecurity firm Secureworks, after diplomatic personnel and U.S. Democrats. About 50 of the journalists worked at The New York Times. Another 50 were either foreign correspondents based in Moscow or Russian reporters like Lobkov who worked for independent news outlets. Others were prominent media figures in Ukraine, Moldova, the Baltics or Washington.......The list of journalists provides new evidence for the U.S. intelligence community's conclusion that Fancy Bear acted on behalf of the Russian government when it intervened in the U.S. presidential election. Spy agencies say the hackers were working to help Republican Donald Trump. The Russian government has denied interfering in the American election.........Previous AP reporting has shown how Fancy Bear — which Secureworks nicknamed Iron Twilight — used phishing emails to try to compromise Russian opposition leaders, Ukrainian politicians and U.S. intelligence figures, along with Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta and more than 130 other Democrats.

The new resolution builds on three earlier rounds of tough sanctions imposed on Pyongyang this year. If fully implemented, it will cap North Korea’s annual import of refined petroleum products, such as gasoline and diesel, at a half-million barrels down from 4.5 million in 2016. Exemptions would only be allowed on a case-by-case basis with Security Council approval.

New Ohio law prevents abortions in Down syndrome cases

(CNN)Ohio is prohibiting doctors from performing abortions in cases where tests reveal the fetus has or likely has Down syndrome. Republican Gov. John Kasich signed the legislation Friday and the law goes into effect in 90 days. "The governor is pro-life and supports policies that protect the sanctity of life," press secretary Jon Keeling tells CNN. The law prohibits abortions after prenatal tests reveal Down syndrome in a fetus or if there's "any other reason to believe" the fetus has the genetic condition. A person performing an abortion in such a case could face a fourth-degree felony charge, and physicians could lose their licenses. The woman seeking the abortion would not be held accountable, according to the legislation.
Similar laws have passed in North Dakota and Indiana, though a federal judge blocked the Indiana law. The North Dakota law went into effect in 2013.

"That is not nonsense. This is people's lives." Holder was responding to remarks made last week by Murdoch, the chairman of 21st Century Fox, which owns Fox News. During an interview on the UK's Sky News channel last Thursday, Murdoch appeared to brush off the sexual misconduct allegations that have vexed the network.

Trump wanted to have a news conference but aides convinced him otherwise

(CNN)President Donald Trump told aides he was eager to take questions Friday and hold a news conference to tout his accomplishments before leaving for Mar-a-Lago, but some advisers argued against it. The aides were eager to avoid him being besieged with questions about the investigation into Russian election meddling and other matters that could overshadow the tax bill he had signed into law, two White House officials told CNN. The President's schedule remained in flux over the last day, amid questions about whether he would stage a public bill-signing ceremony of the tax legislation or hold a news conference. Many previous presidents have held year-end news conferences before leaving for Christmas vacations. For two straight days, Thursday and Friday, White House aides were told to prepare for a news conference of some kind.
Both plans were scrapped.

FBI Foils Plot for Christmas Day Attack on San Francisco

The FBI has arrested an American man who allegedly plotted a terrorist attack on a popular tourist site in San Francisco to be carried out on Christmas Day. Federal authorities announced Friday that they had arrested Everitt Aaron Jameson, 26, of Modesto, California, this week. Jameson allegedly told an undercover FBI agent that he planned to target the Pier 39 in San Francisco by remotely detonating explosives and then shooting people with an automatic rifle as they fled. According to FBI documents, Jameson chose that location because he had been there before and knew it was a crowded area. He also told the FBI agent that Monday, Christmas Day, would be a "perfect day" for an attack. He said he did not have an escape plan "because he was ready to die.

This is exactly why I accuse liberals of being group thinkers stuck inside a bubble. Here is a video of a guy in the East Village, NYC. He asks people what they think of the GOP tax plan. They all hate it. Then he tells them that Bernie Sanders has a proposal out. He starts telling them Bernie's plan. Only it isn't Bernie's plan, it is the GOP law that just passed. They all love it, makes sense. ...

CBS This Morning, who is no friend to conservatives, did a report. They took the tax returns of 3 American families ... One single mother renting home making less than 40 K a year and living paycheck to paycheck. A married couple with no kids who are homeowners making 150 K a year. And a married couple with 4 kids, home owners, making 300 K a year ... took their tax returns from last year to an accountant. He found that under the new law the single mom will make $1,300 more next year. ... The married couple with no kids will be paying $650 less this coming year. ... The married couple with 4 kids will be responsible for $13,000 less in taxes.

Don't believe the bullshit coming from the left. This helps the poor and middle class too. Small businesses as well as corporations.

.

Speaking of which ... Australia is freaking out. Fear new U.S. tax law will cost them jobs and money.

Australian Treasurer Scott Morrison sounded alarm bells about the impact of the recently-passed American tax cuts on Australia’s economy.

If Australia doesn’t pass its own version of the Trump tax cuts, Morrison fears the country will take a hit to its GDP of up to 1 percent. Morrison initially proposed a $65 billion tax cut, saying it woulld add 1 percent to Australia’s GDP. After Trump’s cut, however, Morrison warned that the cuts are necessary for the country’s economy not to contract.

Morrison cited treasury analyses showing that Australia “may experience a significant recessionary impact and a potential downgrade in revenues if it does not lower its corporate tax rate from 30 percent to 25 percent in coming years, in response to Trump’s cuts,” according to The Guardian.

Because the United States will no longer be a country with one of the highest corporate tax rates in the developed world, Australia risks being “marooned,” as the country’s Treasury Department said in its analysis.

“The Trump tax cuts are coming. If we fail to respond, they will take Australian jobs, investment and wages with them,” Morrison said.

New home sales surged 17.5 percent in November, the biggest rise since 2007.

Newly constructed homes sold at an annualized pace of 733,000, much faster than the consensus estimate of 650,000. Indeed, sales were so brisk that the blew past the uppermost estimate of 690,000.

Home sales have been brisk in the final months of the year. September saw a rise of 6.2 percent and October 14.2 percent.

New home sales are not just a sign of strength in the housing market. They are also a gauge of overall economic momentum. Construction of new homes adds good jobs and indicates rising incomes for construction workers. New homeowners typically purchase durable consumer goods such as washers, dryers, refrigerators, and furniture, creating a ripple effect of added demand through the economy. The sales also generally reflect an economic confidence on the part of buyers.

The Original Russia Connection

Felix Sater has cut deals with the FBI, Russian oligarchs, and Donald Trump. He’s also quite a talker.

[ In 1998, Sater pleaded guilty to his involvement in a $40 million stock fraud scheme orchestrated by the Russian Mafia. In exchange for his guilty plea, he agreed to become an informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and federal prosecutors, assisting with organized crime. In July 2017, it was reported that Sater had agreed to cooperate with investigators concerning an international money laundering scheme.

In January 2008, Sater joined the Russian real estate company Mirax Group as a senior advisor to Sergei Polonsky, and stayed with the company through the integration of Mirax into the holding company Potok in 2011. In 2009, he became a managing director at Global Habitat Solutions, a New York City housing, energy, and infrastructure conglomerate. Since September 2011, Sater has been a senior advisor at TxOil, a Turkmenistan-based oil company.

Felix Sater was a managing director of Bayrock Group LLC, as well as a senior advisor to Donald Trump and The Trump Organization when construction of the Trump SoHo began in 2006

He played a major role throughout the process of the building's construction, and remained managing director of Bayrock Group when the Trump SoHo project was completed in 2010. The building is a $450 million, 46-story, 39-unit hotel condominium located at 246 Spring Street in SoHo, New York City. The project was a collaboration between The Trump Organization, Bayrock Group LLC and Tamir Sapir.

Sater has been an advisor, investor, or developer in notable real estate projects including the Trump International Hotel & Residence in Phoenix, Arizona, the Conrad Fort Lauderdale and Midtown Miami in Florida, and Cornwall Terrace and 1 Blackfriars in London.

In late January 2017, Sater met with Ukrainian politician Andrey Artemenko and Donald Trump's personal lawyer, Michael D. Cohen, at the Loews Regency in Manhattan to discuss a plan to lift sanctions against Russia. ]

On June 19 in a courtroom in Downtown Brooklyn, a federal judge took up the enigmatic case of an individual known as John Doe. According to the heavily redacted court record, Doe was an expert money launderer, convicted in connection with a stock swindle almost 20 years ago. But many other facts about his strange and sordid case remained obscured. The courtroom was filled with investigative journalists from numerous outlets along with lawyers petitioning to unseal documents related to the prosecution. “This case,” argued John Langford, a First Amendment specialist from Yale Law School who represented a Forbes editor, implicates an “integrity interest of the highest order.” The public had a right to know more about Doe’s history, Langford argued, especially in light of “the relationship between the defendant in this case and the president of the United States.”

John Doe’s real name, everyone in the courtroom knew, was Felix Sater.Born in Moscow and raised in Brooklyn, Sater was Donald Trump’s original conduit to Russia. As a real-estate deal-maker, he was the moving force behind the Trump Soho tower, which was built by developers from the former Soviet Union a decade ago. Long before Donald Trump Jr. sat down to talk about kompromat with a group of Kremlin-connected Russians, Sater squired him and Ivanka around on their first business trip to Moscow. And long before their father struck up a bizarrely chummy relationship with Vladimir Putin, Sater was the one who introduced the future president to a byzantine world of oligarchs and mysterious money..........

As a convicted racketeer with murky ties to the Mafia, law enforcement, intelligence agencies (both friendly and hostile), various foreign oligarchs, and the current president of the United States, Sater has become an obsession of the many investigators — professional and amateur — searching for Trump’s Russia connection. Since the election, especially in the more feverish precincts of the internet, he has been the subject of constant speculation, which has at times been contradictory. Was he the missing link to the Kremlin? (“Trump, Russia, and a Shadowy Business Partnership,” read the headline of a recent column by Trump biographer Tim O’Brien.) Or could he be Mueller’s inside man? (“Will a Mob-Connected Hustler Be the First Person to Spill the Beans to the FBI on Trump’s Russian Ties?” asked a story on the lefty site Alternet.) Could he be playing both sides?.......................

He couldn’t resist telling me, though, that something big was brewing. “In about the next 30 to 35 days,” he told me, “I will be the most colorful character you have ever talked about. Unfortunately, I can’t talk about it now, before it happens. And believe me, it ain’t anything as small as whether or not they’re gonna call me to the Senate committee.”

This was before the news of Don Jr.’s fateful Trump Tower meeting came out. Still, it was already clear that Mueller was shifting his attention toward Trump’s family business, and many were wondering if Sater, who sang so beautifully for the FBI before, might have another big number to perform. Lately, something about Mueller’s investigation seems to have truly alarmed the president. Rattled by its focus on his finances, the president has sent signals that he might fire the special counsel and has openly discussed issuing preemptive pardons. The extremity of Trump’s reaction has only heightened suspicions he has something truly damning to hide. And if anyone outside the president’s immediate orbit knows what that is, one could imagine it would be Sater.

Sater laughed off such theories. “The next three years of hearings about Trump and Russia will yield absolutely nothing. I know the man, they didn’t collude,” he said. “Did a bunch of meetings happen? Absolutely. The people on the Trump team who had any access to the Russians wanted to be first in and be the guys that ran the whole détente thing. Michael Flynn wanted to be the détente guy, and then [Paul] Manafort, I’m sure, wanted to be the détente guy. Shit, I wanted to be the détente guy, why not? But was it really a conspiracy between Putin and Donald to get him elected? A little bit of a stretch.”

Mr. Trump distanced himself from Mr. Sater in a 2013 videotaped deposition. “I don’t know him very well,” he said. He added, “if he were sitting in the room right now, I really wouldn’t know what he looked like.” Mr. Sater says his relationship with the Trump Organization continued until as recently as the fall of 2015, when he had been working on a plan for a Trump Tower in Moscow. That deal, he told the Times, came to a halt because of Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign

Russia probe closes in on Trump’s inner circle

Interviews in Russia Probe Are Scheduled for New York, Angering Democrat

Intelligence committee plan means panel staff, not lawmakers, will question Trump associates - Wall Street Journal

WASHINGTON—The Republican-led House Intelligence Committee has scheduled staff interviews with two witnesses in its probe of Russian interference in the 2016 election to take place in New York City next week while Congress is in session on Capitol Hill [ I believe at the same time the tax cut votes were in progress - WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON ??? - POTENTIALLY THE MOST IMPORTANT WITNESSES IN THE PROBE ?!?! ], meaning committee members won’t be able to question them directly.

Several members of the House intelligence committee have traveled to New York to hear testimony from two long-time business associates of President Donald Trump. One of them is, his former secretary who is now a senior vice president at his umbrella company, the Trump Organization. She was interviewed on Friday, according to multiple reports. Committee members heard from on Wednesday.

Sater became a person of interest in the wide-ranging Russian influence story after the New York Times revealed in August that he had written an email to Trump's top attorney, Michael Cohen, in which he vowed to enlist the help of Russian president Vladimir Putin to approve a real estate deal. According to Sater, getting a Trump Tower built in Moscow would demonstrate how good the future president was at negotiating.

“Our boy can become president of the USA and we can engineer it,” Sater wrote in his message. “I will get all of Putins [sic] team to buy in on this, I will manage this process.”

Graff has become a person of interest to the committee due to her decades-long role as an informational gatekeeper for Trump. She was also mentioned in a June 3, 2016 email sent to Donald Trump Jr. when he was attempting to coordinate a meeting with a Russian attorney he believed had incriminating information about then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. In that message, sent by publicist Rob Goldstone, the information was described as being "part of Russia and its government's support for Mr. Trump." The younger Trump, Eric, his brother-in-law Jared Kushner, and Trump's then-campaign manager Paul Manafort agreed to meet with the attorney, Natalia Veselnitskaya, just days later. All three men said later that Veselnitskaya did not present any damaging information about Clinton. Veselnitskaya has since claimed that she never had presented herself as having such details.

High-ranking Democrats on the committee and within the party's House leadership have condemned the move to question Graff and Sater out of state and during a time when the House was in session on Capitol Hill.

Top FBI official linked to reporter who broke Trump dossier story

James Baker, the FBI's recently reassigned general counsel, was in touch with David Corn of Mother Jones in the fall of 2016, GOP sources said.

House Republicans are investigating contact between the FBI's top lawyer and a Mother Jones reporter in the weeks before the left-leaning outlet broke the first news story about the existence of a disputed dossier alleging ties between President Donald Trump and the Kremlin, according to two congressional GOP sources who described documents linking the two men.

The GOP sources said the documents — made available recently to lawmakers by the Department of Justice — revealed that James Baker, the FBI's general counsel, communicated with Mother Jones reporter David Corn in the weeks leading up to the November 2016 election. Corn was the first to report the existence of the dossier on Oct. 31 and that it was compiled by a former high-level western spy.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that Baker had been reassigned within the FBI, though the reason for the move was unclear.

Corn denied that Baker was a source for his story on the dossier.

"I'm not going to discuss my sources. But in order to prevent the dissemination of inaccurate information, I will say that James Baker was not my source for this story," he said in a statement to POLITICO.

The congressional sources said there's no conclusive evidence that Baker aided Corn's reporting or acted as a source. But Republicans are pointing to the connection to cast suspicion about whether FBI officials had a hand in directing the details of the dossier to reporters, and the two sources said they expect it to be a focus of GOP investigators' upcoming lines of inquiry.

Baker's connection to Corn comes as Republicans in Congress have been raising questions about the FBI's handling of the now-famous Steele dossier, named for Christoper Steele, the British former intelligence agent subsequently identified as the author of the document.

Trump friction caused WSJ editorial board exodus

BY CHRIS ROUSH · DECEMBER 20, 2017

Sam Tanenhaus of Esquire writes about how friction at The Wall Street Journal editorial board over Donald Trump has caused five staff members to leave.

Tanenhaus writes, “Much has been written about friction between the Journal’s down-the-middle, just-the-facts news reporters and its highly ideological editorial department. But the more significant story — an obsession for the Never Trumpers— is the rupture within the Journal’s editorial pages and the exodus that resulted.

Bret Stephens, who won a Pulitzer in 2013, was the defector with the highest profile. He was deputy editor when he jumped over to the Times, where he was soon joined by his editor at the Journal, Bari Weiss. The Journal’s books editor, Robert Messenger, is now at The Weekly Standard. Sohrab Ahmari, a foreign-policy writer, went to Commentary. Mark Lasswell, an editor, was told not to return from a book leave.

“Those were heavy losses in pages whose content is managed by fewer than thirty people in total. And the reason, according to several defectors, was the Journal’s skidding reversal once Rupert Murdoch realized Trump could win. Several sources pointed to the editorials by one writer, James Freeman. ‘All-in for Ted Cruz’ during the primaries, Freeman wrote a strong attack on Trump’s Mob dealings [ WITH FELIX SLATER ], and had a second ready to go. But as Trump got closer to clinching the nomination, Paul Gigot kept delaying publication, saying ‘it needed work.’ Once Trump became the likely Republican nominee, Freeman executed a neat volte-face [ a reversal in policy ]. ‘The facts suggest that Mrs. Clinton is more likely to abuse liberties than Mr. Trump,’ he wrote. ‘America managed to survive Mr. Clinton’s two terms, so it can stand the far less vulgar Mr. Trump.’

“Since then, the Journal has gone further. Even jaded readers were startled to see the editorial-page call for Robert Mueller, who is leading the Russia investigation, to resign. And when an op-ed urged Trump to issue blanket preemptive pardons for the accused, John Yoo, the theorist of the expansive ‘unitary executive’ and author of the Iraq War ‘Torture Memos,’ warned in the Times that the Journal’s advice would place Trump on the road to impeachment. (Neither Gigot nor Freeman replied to interview requests.)”
