The provisional roster for Team Curacao heading to Venezuela and the Serie Del Caribe 2023 was announced

In reviewing that provisional roster, It appears that Dayan Frias was not added to the team heading to Venezuela.

In the previous article, it looks like Richie Palacios is off the board also.

Tentatively, It does not look like any Guardians will be playing in the Caribbean Series.

Gabriel Noriega came to the rescue for the Leones

The Lions sting ahead in the 3-2 series with a 7-2 win over the Sharks and will seek to seal the title on Monday as a local

By YELIMAR REQUENA

JANUARY 28, 2023

Success always depends on man's ability to take advantage of opportunities. Gabriel Noriega made it more than clear this Saturday by leading the victory of Leones del Caracas 7-2 over Tiburones de La Guaira in the fifth game of the grand final of the LVBP.

The Lions go ahead in the series 3-2 and will seek to seal the deal on Monday at home.

Two good innings were enough

Gabriel Noriega, who had not seen action since January 19, was included as the starter for this Saturday's game and quickly became the protagonist.

With a Grand Slam in the second inning, the third baseman sentenced the starter Ramón García, who after two outs got complicated and loaded the bases with two consecutive walks.

Isaías Tejeda and Orlando Arcia combined to bat in another three runs in the third inning and thus handcuff the Sharks' hopes.

Tiburones could barely answer that attack with two one run innings, one in the second due to a single by Ehire Adrianza, and another in the third after a ground ball by Wilson García.

Three times they had the bases loaded, but the capital starter Jhoulys Chacín always found a way to keep them at bay. In total Sharks left 10 men on the bases.

In addition to Gabriel Noriega (1-3), Orlando Arica (1-3) stood out with a couple of RBIs and Isaías Tejeda who finished 2-5 also with an RBI.

The pitching was the protagonist

Miguel Socolovich (1.0), Ricardo Rodríguez (1.0), José Mujica (1.0) and Silvino Bracho (1.0) shone again by taking out the Tiburones in the last four innings allowing only one hit.

The victory went to Jhoulys Chacín, who completed five innings of only two runs, despite giving away four walks.

The right-hander threw 100 pitches, struck out five and improved his ERA to 4.13. Ramón García, for his part, took the loss by allowing seven runs in two innings.

Jordan Díaz

To the Caribbean Series without Jordan Díaz

January 29, 2023 - 1:19 AM

Vaqueros de Montería announced yesterday the definitive roster with which it will represent our country in the Caribbean Series, in Venezuela, which will be played from February 2 to 10.

There will be 27 players, 12 of those players were selected as reinforcements by manager Ronald Ramírez and his technical staff, from the Caimanes de Barranquilla and Tigres de Cartagena teams, with the purpose of strengthening the team's line-up and bullpen.

Of the reinforcements, eight are pitchers and four field players.

The great absence from the cowboy roster is the big leaguer from Monteria, Jordan Díaz, who must appear on February 15 at the training camps of the Oakland Athletics and his replacement is expected to be the Mexican Andrés Álvarez, who was a member of the ranks of alligators.
Thus, the designated hitter will be Dilson Herrera.

The team plans to travel next Tuesday, January 31, to Venezuelan territory to play the Caribbean Series, where it will debut on Thursday, February 2, against Indios de Mayagüez of Puerto Rico.

The roster was made up like this:

Pitchers:

Carlos Mario Díaz, Kevin Escorcia, Hernando Mejía, Hugo Beltrán, Julio Vivas, Francisco López, Francisco Jiménez, Samuel Burgos, Eduar López, Randy Consuegra, Carlos Quevedo, Óscar Marcelino, Víctor Vargas, Yelminson Peralta and Jhon Peluffo.

Receivers:

Daniel Vellojín, Pabel Manzanero and Andrés Angulo.

Infielders:

Fabián Pertuz, Reynaldo Rodríguez, Francisco Acuña, Dilson Herrera and Dayan Frías.

Outfielders:

Darwin Pomare, Gustavo Campero, Jesús Marriaga and Brayan Buelvas.

[ I GUESS THAT MAKES IT OFFICIAL - DAYAN FRIAS WILL BE HEADING TO CARACAS ]

GETTING TO KNOW DAYAN FRIAS

Dayan Frias 2022 scouting report and grades

Hit: 45, Power: 40, Run: 50, Defense: 45, Arm Overall: 50, Risk: Moderate: MLB ETA: 2025, Roster Status: R5 Eligible 2022

Build & Background

Frias was signed as a 16 year old out of Columbia and is still small, but has developed quite a bit of power despite his size. He played in the Dominican Summer League in 2019, the made massive improvements before joining the ACL Indians in 2021.

What Frias does well

From the start, Frias has had an excellent eye at the plate, using a high walk rate in the DSL to stand out among his classmates despite a poor bat. Last year, he continued that high walk rate while adding significant power with eight more doubles and four more homers in a similar number of games played. As he matures, he should be expected to continue in this direction rather than going back towards the speedy middle infielder he started as.

Where Frias needs to improve

Nearly the opposite of the rest of his international signing class, Frias has issues both defensively and on the bases. He was particularly rough at third and may need to find a more feasible permanent position that doesn’t require as much range or a strong arm. Second base would make the most sense, but while playing almost exclusively there in 2019, he played just four games at the position in 2021.

Intangibles

Almost certainly Frias’ official height and weight stats are greatly inaccurate already as they came from his age 17 season, but it’s impossible to know where he’ll end up as far as size is concerned. This could ultimately impact both his defensive position and his offensive profile.

Future

Frias was definitely a breakout performer for Cleveland in 2021, so it’s difficult to make any solid predictions, but things are looking positive. He should play his first full season of minor league ball in 2022 with the Hillcats where we will learn a lot more about his ultimate ability at the plate. He definitely has talent, but whether that projects to AAA utility infielder or Major League starter is yet to be discerned.

Role 40: Utility Infielder

2021 rank: Unranked

2021 stats:

PA: 188, AVG: .322, OPS: .420, SLG: .520, 2B: 12, HR: 4, RBI: 24, SB/SBA: 3/5, K%/BB%: 20.2%/14.4%, ISO: .197, wRC+: 141

14. Dayan Frias, SS

Signed: July 2nd Period, 2018 from Colombia (CLE)

Age: 19.8, Height: 5′ 10″, Weight: 165, Bat/Thr: S/R, FV: 45

Tool Grades (Present/Future)

Hit: 35/55, Raw Power: 35/45, Game Power: 30/40, Run: 45/50, Fielding: 40/50, Throw 50

Frias’ profile has a very good heuristic foundation — he’s a switch-hitting middle infielder who has performed on paper — and he has some physical projection despite his measurables. It’s not like Frias is 6-foot-3 or anything, but he is taller than his listed 5-foot-7, and already has a pretty strong lower half and forearms. He’s also a good rotational athlete with above-average bat speed when he takes his best rips, and he has plus bat control from both sides of the plate. While his walk rates in pro ball have been good so far, Frias has tended to expand the zone in our in-person looks, especially against pitches below the strike zone. It’s the biggest hole in his current skill set, which is otherwise extremely well-rounded and advanced. If there’s another yellow flag, though, it’s Frias’ high-end exit velos, which are only in the 101-104 mph range, a 30 on the scale. His 2021 barrel rate (about 16%) was still quite high relative to those max exit velos, so he was hitting the ball hard consistently, just not super hard.

In addition to the statistical case (he hit .322/.420/.520 on the complex in 2021) and all of the eyeball scouting boxes he checks (an athletic swing, bat control, viable and perhaps still-developing physicality, and the feet, hands and internal clock to stay at shortstop), Frias is also seen as a instinctive, gamer/grinder type of player who has responded well to big game situations. He was on Colombia’s 2021 U23 National Team and was an important part of the Colombian team that slayed the Dominican dragon and won the 2022 Caribbean Series for the first time in the country’s history. That stuff is the cherry on top of a well-rounded sundae of skills. The lack of overt physical projection (if he were a lanky 6-foot-2, and it were more obvious that he was going to grow into above-average power, he’d be a 45+ FV) means Frias’ hit tool will likely need to be what carries him to an everyday big league role, but we think that’s in play.

Harold Castro gave the Lions Champions Number 21

With a home run in the 11th inning, the outfielder sealed the first Lions championship since 2010

By YELIMAR REQUENA

JANUARY 31, 2023

The drought ended. With a home run by Harold Castro in the 11th inning, the Leones del Caracas defeated Tiburones de la Guaira 7-6 on Monday to win their 21st title in the history of the Venezuelan Baseball League (LVBP).

On Ronald Belisario's third pitch, the Lions outfielder sent the ball into the right field stands to seal a spectacular victory.

Tight from start to finish

The sixth game of the final was a true give and take, which honored the quality shown by both teams throughout the regular round.

Sharks began to attack early and dived ahead, taking advantage of every detail. With a wild pitch and singles by Balbino Fuenmayor and Wilson García, they took the lead 3-0 in the first inning.

Leones answered in the bottom of that same inning and managed to cut the lead with two runs after hits by Harold Castro and José Rondón.

La Guaira added another run in the second inning with a home run by Ehire Adrianza and extended their lead to 4-2. But that lead would last very little.

Leones cracked opener Erick Leal in the bottom of the third and with a double by Oswaldo Arcia and a two-run homer by José Rondón put them up 5-4.

For the second third of the game the pitching took over and the score would not change until the seventh. “La bala” Danry Vásquez read Ricardo Pinto perfectly and with a two-run home run put the Sharks up again, this time 6-5.

However, as before, the response would be immediate and Leones would tie in the bottom of that inning with a shot by Juan Carlos Torres. After two scoreless innings, extra innings became necessary.

Silvino Bracho (3.0 In relief) and Edubray Ramos (2.1 In relief) got involved in a pitching duel that kept the tie until the top of inning 11. Everything was defined at the end of that inning when manager Henry Blanco was forced to change the pitcher and Harold Castro capitalized.

The victory finally went to Silvino Bracho (1-0), who with 26 pitches threw three scoreless innings. And the loss went to Johan Belisario (0-1).

Leaders On Offense

Harold Castro was the hero of the day, finishing 3-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. But José Rondón was also key with 3-4 with three rbi's.

Wilfredo Tovar and the brothers Oswaldo and Orlando Arcia doubled and did their bit for the triumph of the capital.

2023 Caribbean Series: Participating teams, venue and tournament format

By Lyndon Suvanto

Modified 14 Jan 2023

The 2023 iteration of the Caribbean Series will be the 65th in history. The tournament will bring together the champions of each professional baseball league in the countries that make up the Caribbean Professional Baseball Confederation. For fans of football, it is similar to the UEFA Champions League, just in a single tournament.

Last year, Caimanes de Barranquilla, a team from the Colombian Professional Baseball League, was crowned champions. They defeated Gigantes del Cibao of the Dominican Republic 4-1 in the final.

Image

This year, the tournament will be played at La Rinconada Stadium in Caracas and Jorge Luis García Carneiro Stadium in La Guaira, Venezuela, from Feb. 2-10.

This will be the debut of La Rinconada Stadium, which has a capacity of 38,000, making it the largest baseball stadium in South America. La Rinconada will host the final and third-place games of the Caribbean Series.

The tournament will kick off on Feb. 2, with all eight teams in action.

The first game will see:

Cuba and Curacao
Then Colombia and Puerto Rico
Then Mexico and Dominican Republic
Finally host Venezuela and Panama.

The tournament format for the Caribbean Series

The tournament will operate as a single round-robin. Each team will play one another with the four teams with the best records advancing to the semifinals. The top seed will face the fourth seed, with second and third place playing for a spot in the finals.

The two losers of the semifinals will face off for the bronze medal. The semifinal winners will battle for the championship at 7:30 pm on Feb. 10.

Colombia showed its power against Puerto Rico

The team showed great offensive capacity that featured Francisco Acuña

By GERARDO JAVIER ROMERO

FEBRUARY 2, 2023

Vaqueros de Montería took the 7-1 victory against the Indios de Mayagüez in what was their first game in the Greater Caracas 2023 Caribbean Series.

Columbia demonstrated a vast superiority in the game after scoring the first run in the top of the third thanks to a double to center field by Gustavo Campero to score Francisco Acuña.

The game took a fate in favor of the Colombians that would not change after a home run to left field by Jordan Díaz; the home run allowed him to score Francisco Acuña and Andrés Angulo to make the game 4-0.

In the upper part of the sixth inning, the offense continued with a double by Francisco Acuña to left field so that Brayan Buelvas added the fifth run.

The Indians finally got on the board after Danny Ortíz's sacrifice fly that scored Vimael Machín for Puerto Rico's only run.

Despite having full control of the game, the Vaqueros added two more runs by Francisco Acuña and Andrés Angulo to make it 7-1.

Acuña served as one of the most important figures in the game by being responsible for most of the runs. Acuña scored three and batted in one.

Cuba wins in its debut against Curacao

Cuba came from behind and took the victory in their first game of the Caribbean Series

By SAIRUBY ALAYON FLORES

FEBRUARY 2, 2023

The Caribbean Series opened the curtain of its 65th edition, in the first duel of the baseball classic, the teams of Cuba and Curaçao faced each other, at the Jorge Luis García Carneiro Stadium in Macuto.

The first meeting was a great pitching duel between starters Cesar Garcia of Cuba and Cody Mincey of the Curaçao.

Those from Curaçao scored the first run of the game in the fifth inning, after a sacrifice fly by Warren Serafina that batted in Sharlon Schoop to open the scoreboard in Macuto.

Agricultores de Cuba came back to beat the WildCats of Curaçao 3-1, in a duel that remained tied until the seventh inning.

Andrés de la Cruz hit the first home run of the Caribbean Series in the eighth off reliever Shairon Martis.

Thus denying the tremendous work of the starter Cody Mincey had been doing throughout seven innings.

The Cuban team knew how to take advantage of the extra inning with the runner on second, but also a failure in the relief corps of Curaçao.

With Vinales on second to start the inning, Aviles singled to right field and Vinales scored for a 2-1 Cuban lead. Laza walked Aviles to second. Pena sacrificed the runners to third and second. Abreu walked loading the bases. Larduet walked and Aviles scored the third run of the game giving the Cubans a 3-1 victory

Remember that the Cuban team participates in this edition of the Caribbean classic as a guest team.
