The Aragua Tigers seek to straighten out after a bad day

Definitely nothing went right for the Tigers on Monday in their Round Robin debut. They were shut out 14-0, had only three hits, reached base five times, and even made a defensive error.

It must also be taken into account that the club was at a physical disadvantage, since Magallanes had not played since December 27 and Tigres extended its participation in 2022 until Friday the 30th.

Now, the team led by Wilfredo Romero will have to turn the page quickly, not only because of how short and demanding a Round Robin is (16 games in a period of 20 days) but also because of how much or how little that defeat against the Navigantes took out of them.

The Tigers have the material to get it done, since they had the second best offense in the regular season and in two games in the Wild Card Series they batted for a .410 average (34-of-83) with an OPS of .994 and an average of 11 runs scored per game.

In contrast, they were the worst pitching staff of the season, in the Series against the Braves there was a minimal improvement, since in 18 innings they had a 4.50 ERA, and the rivals barely hit for a .246 average and could only score nine runs against them.

Ali Castillo led Leones to victory over Sharks

Ali Castillo ended up being the protagonist in the victory for Leones del Caracas 6-5 against Tiburones de La Guaira , this Monday at the beginning of the Round Robin.

The opportune bat from the Zuliano, who replaced pitcher Tiago Da Silva on the Leones roster, ended up making the difference in the close duel at UCV.

Tiburones took advantage of minor lapse by starter Jhoulys Chacín to do damage. And -- with a pair of sacrifice flies -- went ahead with two runs in the second inning.

However, after four scoreless innings, Leones finally figured out pitcher Ricardo Pinto. Alexander Palma tied the game with a line drive to left field and Ali Castillo put the Leones up 3-2 with a single to shortstop.

Tiburones reacted quickly and tied it in the top of the sixth on a single by Ehire Adrianza. But Caracas countered and expanded the lead with single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to take a 6-3 lead.

And it is when the Tiburones threatened to come back in the ninth, after reinforcement Ángel Reyes hit a two-run homer against Anthony Castro's pitches with only one out on the board. However, the Leones closer managed to get subdue Balbino Fuenmayor and Carlos Castro for the victory.

Ali Castillo finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and one scored, and Alexander Palma (1-for 4) added another pair of RBIs.

Ricardo Rodriguez (1-0), who came on to relieve Chacín, ended up taking the victory after an inning of one run and Anthony Castro (1) scored the save.

Gregory Infante, for his part, charged with the setback by allowing a run in relief in one inning.

Leones tried to react in that same period, but -although they scored five runs- they always received a forceful response from the red birds. They scored one more in the eighth, but there was nothing to do anymore.

high caliber offense

Gorkys Hernández was the spark plug for Lara by finishing 3-5 with two home runs, including a Grand Slam, and batting in seven runs. His average shot up to .417.

Hernán Pérez, Jecksson Flores and Yojhan Quevedo also tripled in five plate appearances and together drove in another five runs.

Williams Perez (1-0), despite allowing five runs and four walks in 5.0 innings, came away with the win. Elih Villanueva (0-1), for his part, charged with the setback by allowing six runs in a one-inning effort.

In total, five of the seven Leones pitchers received at least two runs.

Águilas defeated the Giants 5-0 at the Julián Javier stadium in San Francisco de Macorís.

The Estrellas Orientales rallied for three runs in the eighth to recover from a deficit and thus beat the Tigres del Licey 4-2, which causes another four-way tie for first place in the round-robin semifinal of the Dominican winter ball.

With only six games remaining in this semifinal round, the four teams have a 6-6 record, which represents the fourfold tie, after minutes before the Águilas Cibaeñas won 5-0 over the Gigantes del Cibao.

The Stars reached the eighth with the score 2-1, but the green team took the lead with a drive up the infield, which caught the Licey defense off guard in a bases-loaded action against reliever Jean Carlos Mejía.

Danny Santana hit a ground ball to shortstop, Sergio Alcántara who threw to second where Michael de León forced Jeimer Candelario, Junior Lake scored the tying run, the throw to first base was wide of the bag and Gustavo Núñez took advantage of the action to score.

Robinson Canó then hit a single that drove in Luis Barrera to make it 4-2.

Emilio Bonifacio started with a triple in the first inning against Estrellas starter Edwin Uceta and then scored on Ronny Mauricio's ground ball to first base. Estrellas responded with the tie at the end of the inning on a "wild pitch" from Licey starter, Esmil Rogers.

In the fourth inning, also against Uceta, after one out, Jorge Alfaro hit a double to right field and scored on another double by Ramón Hernández to left field for a Licey lead.

Inspired! Tigres added their third victory in a row

Carlos Rivero finished star of the game going 3-4 with a home run, walk and three runs batted in

The inspired Tigres de Aragua defeated the Cardenales de Lara 7-5 in Barquisimeto this Friday and added a third consecutive victory in the Round Robin.

Wilfredo Romero's team were alone in first place in the standings (3-1), one game above the Cardenales, Leones and Magallanes, all with a 2-2 record.

Solomon Bates followed the example of Guillermo Moscoso and David Ramos and completed a quality start. The American pitched five and two-thirds innings of two unearned runs, no walks and five strikeouts.

The Aragua offensive backed him up early. They tied it 1-1 with a fly ball by Wilson Ramos and turned the score around in the fourth inning with a two-run home run by Carlos Rivero.

In the top of the eighth Yorman Rodríguez and Rivero added two more runs and extended the lead of the Tigers to 5-2. But at the end of that same inning, against Claudio Custodio, Cardenales reacted and scored twice on a hit by Odúbel Herrera.

In the ninth César Hernández tied the score with a fly ball and forced the extra innings.

Finally everything was defined in the 11th inning after a fly ball by Carlos Arroyo and a single by Leobaldo Piña, who scored José “Cafecito” Martínez and Henry “El pollito” Rodríguez.

Carlos Rivero finished as the most outstanding going 3-4 with a walk, three rbi's and two runs scored. His average was .524.

Jorgan Cavanerio (1-0) was left with the victory and Eduardo Figueroa (1) was left with the save. Luis Madero (0-1), for his part, charged with the setback.

Rayder Ascanio wins victory for Magellan

The infielder ended up being decisive in a game marked by pitching blunders

Taking advantage of the rival's blunders also helps to win games, Magallanes demonstrated it this Friday by beating Tiburones de La Guaira 6-5

Despite his inconsistent defense, which already has nine errors in the Round Robin, and the slump that affects their offense, Magallanes managed to add their second victory of the postseason to even their record at 2-2.

Pitching stumbles marked the route

Maikel García, with a fly ball, and Balbino Fuenmayor, with a line drive to the center, had La Guaira winning 2-0 at the top of the fourth inning. But at the bottom of that inning, starter Aldo Montes lost the strike zone and Magallanes changed the face of the game.

With the bases loaded -after a double, a walk and a hit batter - Daniel Mayora was hit with a pitch and Arturo Nieto popped up to the center to tie the score. Rayder Ascanio put Magallanes up 4-2 with a triple that blew up Valencia's starter José Bernardo Pérez.

Tiburones managed to tie in the top of the eighth against reliever Alex Tovalin with a double by dh Wilson García. But Magallanes responded immediately, again capitalizing on mistakes.

Luis Torrens and David Rodríguez hit leadoff singles. Torrens scored on a grounder by Alberth Martínez and Rodríguez scored after two walks and a hit by a pitch.

La Guaira threatened to tie in the ninth, against Wilking Rodríguez, but they could only score one run and that was not enough. Wilking (1-0) picked up the win after 1 1/3 innings of relief and Nate Antone (0-1) took the loss.

Rayder Ascanio finished 1-3 with a walk and three RBIs.

La Guaira, who issued six walks and left 20 runners on base, remains with a 1-3 record and is last at the end of the first round of the Round Robin.

Agricultores win again in the Elite Baseball League semifinal

Now Lead series 2-0 after winning 6-1 against Tabacaleros.

By Raúl Hernández Lima

Friday, January 7, 2023 05:18 PM

Havana.-

An overwhemling offensive today gave Farmers their second victory in the playoff semifinal of the First Elite League of Cuban Baseball , by a score of 6-1 against Tabacaleros.

With this win, they took a comfortable advantage of two games won without defeats before embarking on the long journey to the Capitán San Luis stadium, in Pinar del Río, where the next three games of that subseries will be played, if necessary.

An anemic offense from the visitors, plus erratic defense, favored the work for the home team, who fell voraciously against Erlis Casanova's pitches in the fifth inning to send him to the showers after three runs on five hits, including a home run by Guillermo Aviles.

The Orientals once again had more than 10 hits (12) and with today's six scored they reached 19 in 16 offensive innings, a lot of punishment for the Westerners' pitching.

Avilés went 3-4, the same as Osvaldo Abreu, and receiver Iván Prieto at 2-2, stood out with the wood for the home team.

The veteran Leandro Martínez took the win, with the save to Yoel Mogena after three innings pitched.

With the series tilted in favor of Agricultores, their rivals are forced to win at least two games at home to prolong the playoff and aspire to sneak into the League final.

This Saturday the series between Portuarios and Centrales resumes in the Nelson Fernández park in San José de las Lajas, with a tie at one win per side.
