Hanser Alberto hit a sacrifice fly and the Gigantes del Cibao of the Dominican Republic defeated the Navegantes del Magallanes of Venezuela 8-7 in a 10-inning game, which exceeded five hours of play, began on Monday and ended on Tuesday.
With that victory the Giants win the preliminary round of the Caribbean Series . In the last 10 years, these teams had met 13 times, not including this game, with the Venezuelan teams getting the better of it.
By rule of the Caribbean Series , in extra innings, each team leads the inning with a runner running at second base. The Giants placed Melky Mesa at second base (for Ronald Guzmán). Webster Rivas sacrificed Mesa to third. Richard Ureña was intentionally walked and José Sirí was hit to load the bases.
It was Alberto's turn, who hit a sacrifice fly to right field and Mesa scored to close the game that began at 8:00 pm on Monday and ended at 1:19 am on Wednesday. The run was allowed by Danny Rondón. Venezuela did not take advantage of its opportunity with a good relief from Fernando Abad.
“You can't trust it, you can never trust it, no matter what inning you're in,” Alberto said. "We got the game that was important."
