Lions and Giants win and complicate the LIDOM playoff table

SANTO DOMINGO - The Leones del Escogido and Gigantes del Cibao won their games on Saturday night to continue in the fight for the Dominican League semifinal to advance to the final. The Lions punished the monarchs Tigres de Licey 5-2 in the Quisqueya Stadium, before some five thousand spectators. The winning pitcher was the Creole Enny Romero (1-0) while the imported Patrick McCoy (0-1) was charged with the defeat. Closer Wirfin Bishop signed his third save of the series.

In the other game of the card, the Giants defeated 3-1 to the Cibaeñas Eagles, in the Cibao stadium of the northern Santiago de los Caballeros. The winning pitcher was the imported Louis Head (1-0) and the criollo Richard Rodriguez (0-1) was defeated. The closer Ramón Ramírez threw the ninth without problem to claim his third save. Starters Raúl Valdes (Gigantes) and Yuneski Maya faced each other in a pitching duel for six innings, but left the game without a decision.

Giants and Lions share third place in the standings with a 6-8 mark in wins and losses, a game and a half from the Eagles that find themselves in second with 7-6. First place is occupied by the Tigers, with 8-5, despite their defeat.

The president of the Indians says that Lindor is "a national star"

Paul Dolan highlighted the value of the Puerto Rican in his organization and in the city of Cleveland

The value of Puerto Rican shortstop Francisco Lindor for the Cleveland Indians is an easy one to qualify for the multiple positive effects he brings to his MLB organization.

But judging by the expressions of Paul Dolan, co-owner, president and chief executive officer of this club of the Majors, the Puerto Rican has other attributes that transcend the monetary value for a franchise.

"It is important for anyone to have a star like him (Lindor)," Dolan said in an interview with El Nuevo Día during his visit to Puerto Rico to formalize the series of two games against Minnesota in mid-April at the Hiram Bithorn Stadium.

Winner of the Silver Bat of the American League in 2017 and Gold Glove in 2016, Lindor has been one of the great figures in the resurgence of the Indian franchise, which returned two years ago to a World Series for the first time since the 1997

Since he was chosen in the first round of the 2011 Rookie draft, in the eighth round, the organization had his hopes pinned on the talented player, born in Caguas.

For a baseball franchise in a market not so big compared to the squares of New York, Boston, Los Angeles or San Francisco, and, without enjoying the economic power of those clubs mentioned, teams like Cleveland's depend very much on good results on the pitch with how little or how much you invest. But they also require other ingredients.

Very popular player

"The Cleveland market loves its stars and Frankie has a personality that is very, very attractive. Yes, he plays baseball with such energy and with such obvious love for sports, that translates to our fans very well. So, he instantly became one of the most popular players on our team. That is good. It's good for us, it's good for the sport and ultimately for the player, "said Dolan.

A proven success formula for a professional team without a large checkbook is to arm themselves with young talent developed in their minor league farm system, promote several prospects at the same time so that they rise together, and wait for the harvest in a certain number of years. It's the recipe that worked with the last champions like Chicago and Houston in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

He is a winner

And Lindor has been an impact where his team also needs it: in the win column.

In his first two campaigns in the majors, the young player contributed a batting average of .300, and in the third, in 2017, he imposed a record for the franchise of more home runs connected by a player of his position, with 33, and, incidentally, , became the Puerto Rican shortstop who has most home runs in a campaign.

Not to mention his contribution with the glove on the defensive.

"The first and most important thing is that, because of the type of player he is, we win more," Dolan replied when asked about ways to quantify the impact a star like Lindor can have on a team. "And winning is really the key to generating more ticket sales, more profits that come from there," said the manager.

"Beyond that, when a player is so popular and the day the team does not win comes, the popularity of the player ties the community to the team, while the transition is continued (of the team). And that is a great value, "said Dolan.

He has a lot of charisma

During the 2016 World Series, when the Indians eventually dropped to seven games against the Chicago Cubs, and again in the 2017 playoffs, Lindor's presence was highlighted and recognized by the media and the players themselves. They highlighted his skills as a player, but in each comment there was always some mention of his happiness and the way he enjoys playing.

"We are in a business that generates emotions. And a player like Frankie, who makes direct connections with fans, is very helpful. I think that not only in Cleveland, I think it is a national star, "said the executive of the Indians.

Part of the family

Dolan, in turn, highlighted not only the presence of Lindor, but also that of his compatriot Roberto "Bebo" Pérez, substitute receiver of the Indians.

"For who they are, their personalities, for their emotional bond with the fans ... my wife refers to Frankie as our third child. And I'm sure he's not alone. There is a great feeling for both boys. They have become part of our community, part of our family, and that is great for us because the more connected people are, the more connected they feel with our team, the better it is for us, "he said.

"It's great for the sport to have young stars. It's great for the sport to have attractive, energetic people, and it's great to have different stars. Because not only do you have people from the United States and places like Puerto Rico, but also from the Dominican Republic or Japan. That global reach is better for our sport, "concluded Dolan.

DOMINICAN LEAGUE (LIDOM) PLAYOFFS - ROUND ROBIN

Lisalverto Bonilla (Tigres del Licey, SP) - L (1-2), 4.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R (all earned), 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HR allowed, 1 HBP - Bonilla struggled on Sunday in his third start of the Round Robin, pitching his worst outing of the playoffs so far. While his prior two postseason starts saw him allow a combined three runs (two earned), on eleven hits and two walks while striking out ten in as many innings, he exceeded that run total, equaled the number of walks, and came close to allowing as many hits in only four and a third frames. While this outing is likely an aberration, it does raise concerns that the lengthy season (summer and winter ball combined) is beginning to take its toll on Bonilla.

PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE (LBPRC)

Gian Paul Gonzalez (Gigantes de Carolina - Game 2, starting C) - 0-2 - Gonzalez's Puerto Rican season struggles continued on Sunday as his batting average fell to .200 (3-for-15) in five games in the LBPRC this year. While these numbers are not impressive, remember that this is a man who has never played a game at a full-season level of the minor leagues yet (will likely make his debut this season with Low-A Lake County) facing far more experienced pitchers. The best way to view his Puerto Rican campaign from a player development standpoint is as a particularly intensive extended spring training, except on the front end of camp instead of following it.

FREE AGENT IN LBPRC

Joe Colon (Cangrejeros de Santurce - Game 1, RP) - H (1), 1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K - Colon continues to pitch well in Puerto Rico, with three solid outings (combined one hit and one walk with three strikeouts in 3.1 shutout innings with one save) on four appearances (allowed an earned run on three hits and two walks in 1.1 innings in his other effort). This solid performance can only help his free agent case.

CARIBBEAN LEAGUE UPDATE

DOMINICAN LEAGUE (LIDOM) PLAYOFFS - ROUND ROBIN

18 games, top two advance to Serie Final

Aguilas Cibaenas - 8-6
Tigres del Licey - 8-6
Gigantes del Cibao - 6-8
Leones del Escogido - 6-8

With four games remaining in the Round Robin, the Aguilas and Licey look likely to advance to the Serie Final. Escogido's elimination could (depending on the results of the refuerzo draft) end the winter season of as many as six of the ten current Indians still playing in the Caribbean (RHP Herny Martinez, LHPs Alsis Herrera and Anderson Polanco, C Eric Haase, and IFs Erik Gonzalez and Willi Castro).

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE (LVBP) PLAYOFFS - SERIE SEMIFINAL

Best-of-7, winners advance to Serie Final

Cardenales de Lara lead Navegantes del Magallanes 3 games to 0

Caribes de Anzoategui lead Leones del Caracas 2 games to 1

MEXICAN PACIFIC LEAGUE (LMP) PLAYOFFS - SERIE SEMIFINAL

Best-of-7, winners advance to Serie Final

Tomateros de Culiacan defeat Aguilas de Mexicali 4 games to 0

Mayos de Navojoa lead Charros de Jalisco 3 games to 1

There are no current Indians, and only a few former Wahoos, in the LMP. It is included here only to give a complete picture of the road to the Caribbean Series. Speaking of the Serie del Caribe...

CUBAN SERIE NACIONAL PLAYOFFS - SERIE SEMIFINAL

...The Cuban Serie Nacional is actually wrapping up early enough this season that they can send their current season champion to the Caribbean Series. Their semifinal series are listed below, for the same reason as those of the LMP. Obviously, no Indians, current or former, are playing in the Cuban circuit.

best-of-7, winners advance to Serie Final

Alazanes de Granma defeat Cocodrilos de Matanzas 4 games to 1

Leones de Industriales lead Lenadores de Las Tunas 3 games to 2

PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE (LBPRC) REGULAR SEASON

The LBPRC is the only league still playing its regular season as it didn't get underway until January 5 due to damage from Hurricane Maria, which is still affecting the league in terms of ballpark availability and limits on the number of night games. The standing for the truncated regular season so far are below:

18 games, regular season champion earns bye to Serie Final, second and third place play Wild Card Game for other spot in Serie Final

Cangrejeros de Santurce - 6-4
Criollos de Caguas - 6-5
Gigantes de Carolina - 5-6
Indios de Mayaguez - 4-6

Even as the season nears the two-thirds mark, it is too close to call. The two players mentioned above (Gonzalez and Colon) are the only 2017 and/or 2018 Indians playing in the LBPRC.

Bauer throws 116.9 mph in offseason workout

CLEVELAND – Trevor Bauer has never spent a day on the disabled list, maintaining a mid-90s fastball and working his way up the pitching ranks over the last six seasons.

His unconventional training methods are a testament to this rare combination of durability and high velocities.

The 26-year-old right-hander threw a three-ounce baseball at 116.9 mph last week, a new record at the Driveline Baseball facility in Kent, Wash. Other pitchers like Tim Lincecum and Adam Ottavino also train at the data-driven complex, which uses weighted balls and various long toss programs to build velocity and sustain health for pitchers at or above the age of 16.

Since the Diamondbacks took him out of UCLA with the third overall pick in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, Bauer has made waves across baseball for his unique pregame and in-game routines. He uses a shoulder tube to stretch during batting practice. He throws from the right-center field wall to the left-field foul line – nearly from pole-to-pole – before the opposing hurler steps on the field. He crow hops into his first warmup toss each inning.

Those techniques are becoming a bigger part of the game.

Bauer finished a strong 2017 campaign, logging a 17-9 record, 4.19 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, .266 opposing batting average, 3.06 BB/9 and 10.00 K/9 in 32 games (176.1 innings). His career-high 3.2 WAR coupled with 6.2 scoreless frames against the Yankees in Game 1 of the 2017 ALDS likely secured his No. 3 starter job for 2018 and beyond.

The Indians and Bauer are still working on avoiding arbitration, as the two sides have yet to reach an agreement. Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reported that Bauer wanted $6.52 million for next year, but Cleveland offered him $5.3 million instead. Major League Baseball holds its arbitration cases between Jan. 29 and Feb. 16, providing enough time for more exchanges of salary figures and a new contract.

Pitchers and catchers will report to the Tribe’s Spring Training complex in Goodyear, Ariz. on Feb. 14.

Lindor is the image of the video game cover "RBI Baseball 18"

The Puerto Rican Puerto Rican shortstop of the Cleveland Indians reacted happily with his selection

The Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor is the new image of the cover of the video game "RBI Baseball 18" , as announced, today, Saturday.

The star shortstop of the Cleveland Indians was grateful for his selection to appear on the cover of video games, launched in 2015 by Major League Baseball (MLB) in conjunction with the Players Association.
Image
"It's a blessing," said Lindor, according to the MLB.com portal. "Every time a child appears and says, 'I want to be like you', or the mom or grandmother comes up to you and says, 'I want my grandson or my son to be like you', it's a blessing. It's something you treasure. From there you grow and continue to give your best so that you can inspire others, "said Lindor, who comes from winning the Silver Cup in the American League.

Before Lindor, players like Cory Seager (Dodgers), Mookie Betts (Red Sox) and Anthony Rizzo (Cubs) were the selected figures to cover the cover.
