The Hawks' Seiichi Uchikawa is congratulated by teammates after hitting a solo home run in the sixth inning.

Hawks go up 3-2 on Eagles

FUKUOKA – Seiichi Uchikawa and Akira Nakamura homered for the second straight day as the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks moved within reach of the Japan Series by beating the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.

The Game 4 win in the Pacific League Climax Series’ six-game final stage lifted the Hawks to a 3-2 lead — as league champs, they begin the series in their home park with a one-win advantage.

Trailing by a run in the sixth, Uchikawa greeted new reliever Sung Chia-hao by drilling his third pitch over the outfield wall. It was his sixth career postseason home run, and made him the first player to homer in four straight Climax Series games.

Nakamura, whose two-run, eighth-inning homer lifted the Hawks to their first victory on the field in this series on Friday night, followed with a solo blast to put SoftBank ahead.

“I got a fastball and just tried to square it up,” Uchikawa said. “I’m a bit surprised at this. If I knew why this was happening, you can bet I’d hit more in the regular season.”

Dennis Sarfate, who saved a record 54 games this season for the Hawks, struck out the first two batters in the ninth before issuing a walk on a 3-2 pitch. With pinch runner Louis Okoye on second after a steal, Sarfate struck out potent Eagles shortstop Eigoro Mogi to end it.

Lara's cardinals start training: "There is no time to lose" said Jesús Montero

The Lara Cardinals began their official training at the Antonio Herrera Gutierrez Stadium in Barquisimeto. The red birds have 29 players on the roster, five of them invited, to formally begin their preparation towards the 2017-2018 season.

Manager Jose Moreno highlighted the presence of Jesus Montero and pitcher Luis Lugo among the group of 24 players that was confirmed, ten pitchers, seven infielders and seven outfielders.

One of the batting instructors, Selwyn Langaigne, was also on hand.

After several years when the Cleveland Indians denied Luis Lugo, the young barquisimetano, permission to play in Venezuela, at last his city will see him throw. "What we have all been waiting for a long time, this year will be the year in which I will debut with Lara's Cardinals," said the pitcher, then responding with a smile of satisfaction that "yes" he has permission to pitch in Venezuela.

Luis Lugo:

"My idea is to stay until the end of the season. I wish I could stay. I have not talked to the coaching staff. I await their instructions. I am willing to be in any role that suits the team. I would like to start games but here I am here to pitch. As a barquisimetano there is no better idea than helping the franchise to secure the title. We hope that health will accompany us and we can have that satisfaction''.

OK, but this one is a proposed logo for the Indians. Don't think it has anything to do with the Venezualan league.

Joe: could you, maybe, post the highlight paragraphs for Indians players in minor matters or gametime? Not to be impolite but I'm not interested in the winter league game stories but just what our guys are up to and there's a lot to read through to find that.

Oh Jae-il of the Doosan Bears watches his solo home run in the top of the ninth inning against the NC Dinos in Game 4 of their Korea Baseball Organization postseason series at Masan Stadium in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, on Oct. 21, 2017. This was Oh`s fourth homer of the game.

Doosan Bears flex serious muscles in baseball postseason

n reaching their third straight championship final in the Korea Baseball Organization, the Doosan Bears flexed some serious muscles.

The Bears slugged past the NC Dinos 14-5 on Saturday at Masan Stadium in Changwon, 400 kilometers southeast of Seoul, and claimed their best-of-five second round postseason series in four games.

First baseman Oh Jae-il had a historic game, becoming the first player to hit four home runs in a KBO postseason game. He knocked in nine runs, also a postseason record.

Cleanup Kim Jae-hwan added a solo shot in yet another slugfest, as the Bears advanced to their third straight Korean Series. They won the past two KBO championships, and will face the Kia Tigers in the best-of-seven set, which begins Wednesday at the Tigers' home in Gwangju, 300 kilometers south of Seoul.

The Tigers, who got the bye to the final by virtue of having the best regular season record, must have taken notice after watching the Bears launch one long ball after another in this series. One could argue the Dinos simply didn't pitch well and that the Tigers, who boast two 20-game winners in Hector Noesi and Yang Hyeon-jong, will be different.

If nothing else, though, the Bears' fireworks in four games against the Dinos must have planted some seeds of fear into the Tigers' pitching staff.

Oh Jae-il was a one-man wrecking crew on Saturday. He had a pair of three-run shots early, which was already impressive, and added a two-run jack and a solo homer in later innings to cap off a memorable day. No one had even hit three homers in one postseason game before Oh went deep four times.

He was voted the MVP of the series, after batting .600 (9-for-15) with five home runs, 12 RBIs and eight runs scored in four games.

Oh said he surprised himself with the performance, especially after that fourth home run.

"I thought this was ridiculous, and even my teammates were asking me what was going on," Kim said with a smile. "But records are made to be broken. I'd be okay if someone breaks those records."

Oh will be playing in his third straight Korean Series, and he said nothing else is on his mind but trying to pull off a "three-peat" and also get a measure of personal redemption.

In the 2015 Korean Series, Oh was just 0-for-5 with four walks. The following year, he was 1-for-17 with two RBIs.

"The best part of today is that we reached the Korean Series," he said."

Kim Jae-hwan, who had two home runs in Game 2 and another in Saturday's Game 4, doesn't need much redemption himself. He was 5-for-17 in the Bears' run to the title last year, with two home runs, two RBIs and three runs scored.

Kim and Oh have hit cleanup and No. 5 all series, and the two left-handed sluggers will likely keep opposing pitchers up at night during the Korean Series.

In all, the Bears belted 12 home runs in four games in this series.

But make no mistake. This was far from just the two horses carrying the day. The Bears pounded out 17 hits on Saturday, with every starter picking up at least one hit. By scoring 14 runs, they became the first team to score in double figures in three consecutive postseason games.

They had nine hits in their 13-5 loss in Game 1. Then they followed that up with 15 hits and 17 runs in Game 2, and 13 hits and 14 runs in Game 3.

If you're counting at home, that's 50 runs in four games. Even in this offense-happy era of the KBO, that's outstanding production, mediocre pitching or not. (Yonhap)

Hawks take series lead with win over Eagles

The Japan News

The Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks are now one game away from reaching the Japan Series as they beat the Tohoku Rakuten Eagles 4-3 in the final stage of the Pacific League Climax Series action at Fukuoka Yahuoku! Dome on Saturday.

Fukuoka now has three wins, including a one-win advantage they earned as league champions, while Rakuten has two wins in the best-of-seven series.

Trailing 2-3, Hawks infielder Seiichi Uchikawa and outfielder Akira Nakamura connected back-to-back solo shots in the bottom of the sixth inning to give their team a 4-3 lead.

“I knew it was going over the fence when I smashed the ball,” said Nakamura, who has hit winning homers for two straight games.

Hawks reliever Shuta Ishikawa earned the win and Dennis Sarfate picked up the save with four strikeouts, closing out the final 1⅓ innings. The stadium erupted into cheers when he was called in with two outs in the eighth.

“It’s an amazing feeling you can’t explain,” Sarfate said. “I just tried not to blow the game because guys before me pitched so well. I [had to] go in there to get four outs.”

Rakuten’s Sung Chia-hao, who took over from starter Takayuki Kishi, suffered the loss after allowing three hits, including the two homers.

Meanwhile, the CLCS final stage game on Saturday was postponed to Sunday due to rain, with CL champion Hiroshima Carp and Yokohama DeNA Baystars tied at two games apiece after seven Yokohama pitchers blanked Hiroshima in a tight 1-0 game on Friday.Speech

Hawks manager Kimiyasu Kudo is given a doage (victory toss) after the Hawks clinched he PL Climax Series title with a 7-0 win over Rakuten on Sunday in Fukuoka. | KYODO

Hawks earn spot in Japan Series

FUKUOKA – The Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks clinched the Pacific League Climax Series’ Final Stage on Sunday with a 7-0 win over the Tohoku Golden Rakuten Eagles to earn a spot in the Japan Series.

The Hawks began the six-game final stage at their home park, Yafuoku Dome, with a one-win advantage, but suffered one-run losses in Games 1 and 2 to fall behind before sweeping the next three games against the third-place Eagles.

The Japan Series will begin on Saturday in Fukuoka against either the Hiroshima Carp or Yokohama BayStars, whose Central League final stage is currently tied 2-2.

Right-hander Shota Takeda worked seven innings to get the win and Nobuhiro Matsuda drove in four runs, while the Hawks got an instant boost with the return of star center fielder Yuki Yanagita, who had been out for a month due to injury.

“Things were looking bad after we lost two straight, like we had a zero percent chance of reaching the Japan Series,” Hawks skipper Kimiyasu Kudo said. “The Rakuten Eagles were tough opponents and really put us under pressure, and made it look like we would lose.

“But we just didn’t accept that it would end like that. The players on the bench kept shouting and encouraging each other, and they played how they were used to doing, with energy and high spirits. It wasn’t just the captains, it was all the players, and this is thanks to them.”

Still on the mend with a muscle injury around his rib cage, suffered in September, Yanagita, typically the Hawks’ No. 3 hitter, batted leadoff and sparked a first-inning rally.

He opened the frame with an infield single, was bunted to second and took third on a wild pitch. After Alfredo Despaigne walked, Hawks captain Seiichi Uchikawa brought Yanagita home with a sacrifice fly.

Akira Nakamura’s loud single off the right field fence put runners on the corners, and Matsuda’s two-out double completed the three-run first.

The Eagles stuck with starter Manabu Mima, but the Hawks rocked him for two more runs in the fourth. Nakamura, who hit tie-breaking homers in Games 3 and 4, singled to open the fourth and Matsuda followed with his first homer of the postseason.

Rookie Shoma Fujihira took over for Mima, but a one-out single, a sacrifice and Yanagita’s second single of the game made it 6-0.

Takeda allowed five singles and a walk, while striking out five. Sho Iwasaki overcame a leadoff walk to record a scoreless eighth, and closer Dennis Sarfate punched the Hawks’ ticket to Nippon Professional Baseball’s championship series with a scoreless ninth.

Meanwhile, in Hiroshima, Game 4 of the CL’s final stage was rained out for the second straight day.

With NPB’s amateur draft scheduled for Thursday, Wednesday is the final day games can be played. If the series has not been completed by then, the team leading the stage will move on to the Japan Series, and the Carp will advance in case of a tie.

35 players present on the first day of practice for Escogido

The list of attendees on the first day of practice was completed by Huascar Brazoban
Charly Valerio, Pedro Perez, Rafael Pineda, Wilfri de la Cruz, Orbandy Rodríguez, Yelmison Peralta, Alsis Herrera, Henry Martinez, Jose Rosario, Miguel Rosario, Enmanuel De Leon, Junior Rincon, Jose Batista, Anderson Polanco, Harold Guerrero and Nelson Gonzalez.

Martinez has nice DWL debut

Anderson Polanco (Leones del Escogido, RP) - 0.2 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K - Polanco struggled, especially with his control, in his winter ball opener. Hopefully, this was nothing more than the result of rust from not pitching for a month and a half.

Henry Martinez (Leones del Escogido, RP) - 2 IP, perfect, 1 K - Martinez's Dominican season opener, on the other hand, was a solid outing that is hopefully a foretaste of what to expect from him the rest of the campaign.

From the sixth inning onwards, Henry Martínez (2.0 innings), Daniel Corcino (0.2), Juan Sandoval (1.0) and Tom Windle (0.2), limited the Tiger offensive to just one hit, giving the Lions the opportunity to take the victory. Cordero finished 1-4 with a walk, one run scored and one batted in, while Willi Castro went 2-4 with an rbi and a stolen base.
