Here's the game Columbus started, with Talbot working 4 good innings, on Thursday, and finished yesterday. Jensen Lewis takes the loss. Putnam 2 shutout innings. Hagadone makes AAA and allows a run in his one inning.

Giovanny Soto joins McAllister with a super start. 6 innings, 8 K, one run on 4 hits and a lone walk for the just-turned 20 year old who at that age should be in over his head in the Caroline League. Adam Miller with a 2-inning save. I'm about ready for Adam to move on up, but he still is working with lots of rest. Just enough offense for a 2-1 Kinston win. Adam Abraham with a 2 run double. Roberto Perez still not up to 200 but has looked better lately, doubles and as usual walks.

With White injured, assume Talbott is back up soon although McAllister sure looks like one heck of an option.

We got McAllister for Kearns last year and Carrerra for Branyan. Not bad...

Someone still knows how to make some good deals. The Victor trade is looking fine, too. Maybe even the CC trade, although he's going to be a Hall of Famer starter, who we would not have signed. Lee for Marson, Donald, Carrasco and Knapp? That won't be a decent exchange unless Knapp someone gets and stays healthy.

It's unreasonable to expect every trade to turn up aces. Some will work out better than others. If Carrasco turns out to be a solid starter and we end up with a solid backup catcher in Marson and good bench player in Donald then the Lee trade will have hardly been a bust.

All of the other trades we've made are turning out quite nicely. Sabathia for two everyday players who are good and getting better is not a bad deal.

Kinston Indians outfielder Jason Smit voluntarily retired Thursday night, moments before the K-Tribe departed for a three-game series in Frederick, Md., a team spokesman said Friday.

Smit, a 21-year-old fifth-year pro from Australia, was hitting .217 with no home runs and two RBIs through eight games since being promoted from low Class A Lake County early this month.

He hit .344 with two homers and 11 RBIs in 26 games for Lake County before joining the K-Tribe.

The reasons behind Smit’s sudden retirement, which surprised Kinston’s coaching staff, weren’t clear, but he admitted in a May 7 interview that playing abroad has its challenges.

“For me, it’s really hard,” Smit said. “I struggle quite a bit with missing home. Family’s the big one. It’s always hard because it’s not as easy as picking up my mobile and calling them whenever I want.”

First baseman Jeremie Tice, who has been out with a wrist injury since mid-April, is expected to be activated this weekend to fill the roster spot.

Tim Fedroff's 4 hits in those 2 Aeros games lifted his average to 380 (500 over the past 10 games). Clippers must be short on OF with Buck and Carrera busy winning games for the Indians. Fedroff should a chance in AAA to prove if he's for real. He was a substantial financial investment as a draft choice so I imagine the Tribe wants to see what he can do in AAA at age 24.

Kevin Goodnight continues to be the star Captains pitcher from the 2010 draft. He pitched a very solid 7 innings, 1 run on 2 hits, 2 walks and 7K. Captains attack features 4 K by Carlos Moncrief and by new guy Rodriguez. Dayton pitchers fan 17 in all.

Especially since this is Fedroff's second year at Akron. I know things are crowded at Columbus even with Carrerra and Buck in the big leagues but overall I'd rather see Fedroff getting playing time there than Jared Head and Josh Rodriguez....
