Carlos Carrasco - R - Indians

According to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com, Carlos Carrasco would prefer to start in 2014, but would work out of the bullpen if it was in the best interest of the team.

The 26-year-old right-hander is reportedly in great shape and has shed 15 pounds already this offseason. He struggled to the tune of a 6.75 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 30/18 K/BB ratio over 46 2/3 innings with the Indians in 2013, but still possesses a dazzling repertoire and has immense potential.

Got my Baseball America stats guide for 2013 and scanning for familiar names in the independent leagues I find almost all of our failed top prospects.

Adam Miller, Jeremy Sowers, Corey Smith, Andy Marte and Johnny Drennan all played last season in the Atlantic League. They're all in their 30's by now. The league salaries are $3000 per month or less. These guys must just like to play baseball and I guess the job market is still pretty lousy, so why not keep having fun. Their chances of getting back to the majors are miniscule.

The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has signed free agent infielder Elliot Johnson to a minor league contract with a non-roster invitation to Major League spring training camp.

Johnson, 29, split the 2013 season between Kansas City and Atlanta, hitting .261 (24-for-92) with 5 doubles 2 triples, 10 RBI and 8 stolen bases as the regular second baseman for the Braves over the last five weeks of the season after being claimed off waivers from the Royals on August 21. The Safford, AZ native also started all four games of Atlanta’s NL Division Series match-up against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The versatile switch-hitter has appeared at every position in the infield (164g-SS; 97g-2B; 14g-3B; 2g-1B) and 18 games in the outfield after beginning his career in the Tampa Bay Rays system in 2002. He debuted with the Rays in 2008, appeared in a career-high 123 games for Tampa in 2012 and was traded to Kansas City along with right-handed pitcher James Shields in exchange for outfielder Wil Myers prior to the 2013 campaign.

WoW! They are wasting a lot of money so far this off season. I hope they can find playing time for those who really need it like Jesus Aguilar, Francisco Lindor, Jose Ramirez and a few others.

Giambi.........Admittedly so. I let my dislike for Giambi cloud my mind. On the other hand, I still don't like the guy.

Joe, you have made the same post for 10 years in a row or more.

Don't sign any cheap veterans to training camp invites. Give my winter league heroes a chance.

Rayburn and Kasmir were not among them. Over those ten years, how many of those cheap veterans actually helped this team to the playoffs or even contributed in a most positive way? Not many.

We've finally got the money to waste

Apologies! I really don't remember saying anything detrimental about Kazmir or Rayburn. I liked Rayburn when he was playing for Detroit.

I went back and checked that post out. I thought there was more to it than "We've finally got the money to waste ". That was a general remark aimed at a comment that Seagull had made. I thought that you were referring to a post that was directly aimed at Kazmir, Rayburn, and Giambi.

Giambi was a given. As I said, I don't like the guy.

That remark was not directed at Rayburn.

And a couple of pages earlier I post this with respect to Kazmir:

Followed all three this winter. Gil and Parades have pitched well. Kazmir only pitched in a couple of ballgames but did well. They will provide some nice depth in my opinion.

Unbelievable. The CAVS and the Browns have been so crappy that I am actually looking forward to spring training so I can watch the bargain basement tribe.
