15U: Team USA wins gold medal at Pan Ams

Andrew Vaughn provides big blow with fourth-inning three-run home run

August 4, 2013

BARRANQUILLA, Colombia --

The USA Baseball 15U National Team won the gold medal at the COPABE Pan American Championships with a 6-1 victory over Cuba on Sunday afternoon. Team USA finished the tournament a perfect 8-0.

"The guys did a tremendous job, and I'm really proud of them," manager Tom Meusborn said. "Mason Thompson did a great job, and Vaughn had the huge hit to get us going. It was a great team effort and our guys did an outstanding job representing their country today. There's no better feeling than winning the gold medal."

Team USA fell behind in the second inning of the game when Cuba jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout.

Scoreless through the first three innings, the Red, White and Blue threatened Cuba in the bottom of the fourth inning when Isaak Gutierrez (Cypress, Calif.) and Ben Ramirez (Chula Vista, Calif.) reached base with sharp singles. Andrew Vaughn (Santa Rosa, Calif.) then stepped up to the plate and delivered the biggest blow of the game, a three-run home run to left field to put the Eagles on top 3-1.

"As soon as I hit it I knew it was gone," Vaughn said. "I can't even describe how good this feels right now."

After Cuba made a pitching change, Mason Thompson (Round Rock, Texas) kept the inning rolling with an RBI triple to right-center field, and Chase Strumpf (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) added a run on an RBI single to make it a 5-1 U.S. lead.

An RBI single from Sam Ferri (Norridge, Ill.) increased the U.S. lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth.

Thompson started on the mound for the U.S. and turned in a masterful performance to lead the team to the gold medal. The 6-foot-6 right hander allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts in six innings pitched to earn the win for the Red, White and Blue.

"I just wanted to do my part to help this team win a gold medal," Thompson said. "This is an unbelievable feeling, and I'm so proud to bring this championship back to the United States."

Logan Pouelsen (Huntington Beach, Calif.) pitched the final inning for Team USA and struck out the side to seal the 6-1 gold-medal victory for the U.S.

Former Cuban MVP Abreu said to defect

Current location unconfirmed; slugger may draw interest from several MLB clubs

By Joey Nowak / MLB.com | 8/12/2013 3:35 P.M. ET

Twenty-six-year-old Jose Abreu has defected from his native country of Cuba and could be attractive to a number of teams, according to an ESPN.com report.

A report in El Nuevo Herald cites two agents in saying that Abreu left for the Caribbean, though it acknowledges other reports that have him in the Dominican Republic or Haiti, and the ESPN report does not specify where Abreu may have gone. In order to be eligible to be signed by a Major League team, Abreu would have to establish residency in another country, be declared a free agent by Major League Baseball and be cleared by the United States government.

Abreu would join Oakland's Yoenis Cespedes and the Dodgers' Yasiel Puig as some of the most high-profile Cuban ballplayers to make the transition to the Majors. The Nuevo Herald report cites an agent as saying that Abreu would command a larger contract than Puig or Cespedes.

According to the ESPN report, Abreu is a former MVP in Cuba, where he had one of the best seasons in league history in 2010-11, hitting .453 with 33 home runs and 93 RBIs across just 66 games.

In this year's World Baseball Classic, Abreu hit .360 (9-for-25) with three home runs and nine RBIs in six games. He would be likely to play first base in the Majors.

.................And needless to say the consequences of this event and the absence of Yasiel Puig will be difficult to fill a gap for the aspirations of all dark green players at the 53 National Series.

Jose Dariel Abreu Will Become One of Most Sought After Free Agents This Winter

By Benjamin Klein

(Featured Columnist) on August 12, 2013

Are you ready for another bidding war?

Ben Badler of Baseball America reports that slugger Jose Dariel Abreu has defected from Cuba and will be attempting to sign with a Major League Baseball team. Abreu is a massive player—6'3'' and 250 pounds—who plays first base and could also be a designated hitter, should he sign with a team in the American League.

Badler writes that it could be a while until he’s able to sign:

The process could still take several months. Abreu will have to establish residency in another country, have Major League Baseball declare him a free agent and the U.S. government’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFCA) clear him to sign, but interest in Abreu should be fierce and should have a major impact on this offseason’s free agent market.

Abreu has drawn comparisons to Oakland Athletics star Yoenis Cespedes, but he could potentially have more power than the outfielder. Badler notes that he has “tremendous raw power to all fields.” He hit 13 home runs and had a .837 slugging percentage in 42 games during his season in Cuba, per the report.

While playing for Cuba in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, Abreu was a monster at the plate. In six games, he hit .360/.385/.760 with three home runs, six runs and nine RBI. He finished the international tournament with the second-most total bases of any player, according to the official website for the World Baseball Classic.

This year’s class of free agents isn’t very strong in terms of offensive weapons. Robinson Cano is arguably the top guy up for grabs, and players such as Jacoby Ellsbury and Curtis Granderson will likely sign lucrative deals as well. Abreu could get just as much money as the latter two stars.

But how much money is it going to take to land the slugger? Chris Hatfield of SoxProspects.com thinks Abreu will likely sign a deal worth more than Cespedes and Los Angeles Dodgers phenomenon Yasiel Puig. Cespedes signed a four-year, $36 million deal while Puig inked a contract for seven years and $42 million.
Image
Abreu will likely get a large deal because of the lack of talent expected to be on the market this winter at first base as well. There aren’t many big names who will be seeking new contracts in the offseason and many are well into their 30’s. Abreu is only 26 years old and will easily top the list.

It’s unclear as to which teams may be interested in the Cuban defector, but clubs seeking a power-hitting first baseman or designated hitter should at least make a call to his agent—once he has an agent, that is. Of the teams with a need at first and the means to land him, the Boston Red Sox stand out.

The Red Sox recently lost out on Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, one of the top Cuban pitchers, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Boston chase Abreu too considering Mike Napoli will be a free agent after 2013 and the team is almost always looking to boost its offense with right-handed hitters.

But many other teams will likely be in the mix to sign Abreu as well.

While we don’t know which team Abreu will be playing for next season, or when he’ll even be able to sign a major league contract, we do know that he’s bound to be a star with whichever franchise he lands with. He’s arguably the top Cuban player, and based on what we’ve seen from Cespedes and Puig, that goes a long way.

Scouting Report, Potential Suitors for Cuban Phenom Jose Dariel Abreu

By Mike Rosenbaum

(MLB Prospects Lead Writer) on August 12, 2013

Jose Dariel Abreu, arguably the best hitter in Cuba, has defected from the island, according to El Nuevo Herald, via Hardball Talk, though his exact whereabouts aren’t known at this time.

A 26-year-old first baseman, Abreu has played in Cuba’s Serie Nacional since the 2003-04 season, meaning that he will be exempt from Major League Baseball’s international signing restrictions and therefore seemingly in line for a massive contract.

However, it may take some time, several months according to Ben Badler of Baseball America, until the Abreu sweepstakes can begin. First, he will need to establish residence in another country so that Major League Baseball can declare him a free agent. He will then need to be cleared by the Office of Foreign Assets and Control (OFAC) in order to sign with a team.

Scouting Report

Listed at 6’3”, 250 pounds, Abreu is arguably the most prolific Cuban slugger—yes, even more so than Yoenis Cespedes and Yasiel Puig. A right-handed hitter who showcases robust power to all fields, the 26-year-old employs a unique double toe tap load to initiate an easy, but powerful, swing. While some scouts are divided about how his average bat speed will translate at the major league level, he does an excellent job of getting the barrel on the ball and uses his strength to drive it with authority from line-to-line.
In previous international competitions, such as the World Port Tournament in Rotterdam in July and the World Baseball Classic in March, Abreu demonstrated the ability to square velocity, though he seemed to prefer pitches that allowed him to extend his hands. Like most Cuban hitters, Abreu showed the ability to punish mediocre breaking balls within the strike zone but also the propensity to chase better offerings off the plate.

Performance

During roughly a decade in the Serie Nacional, Abreu annually put up monster offensive numbers.

In 2009-10, Abreu finished third in the league’s MVP voting—behind well known mashers Alfredo Despaigne and Yulieski Gourriel—after batting .388/.542/.786 with 30 home runs and a 55/74 K/BB ratio in 94 games. In addition to drawing 32 intentional walks, he also led the league in on-base percentage and slugging while finishing second in batting average and home runs.

During the following season, Abreu put himself on the map with one of top offensive performances in the league’s history. Appearing in 77 games, he batted .448/.592/.952 with 16 doubles, 37 home runs and a 37/66 K/BB ratio, and was subsequently named as the league’s MVP. During the regular season, Abreu tied A’s outfielder Yoenis Cespedes with 33 home runs despite missing 23 games with bursitis in his shoulder.

Abreu once again put up Ruthian numbers during the 2011-12 season, batting .394/.543/.835 with 18 doubles, 37 home runs, 103 RBI and a 43/80 K/BB ratio in 92 games. Although he paced the circuit in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging and OPS, he finished behind Despaigne in the end-of-season MVP voting.

This past year, Abreu furthered his success in the Serie Nacional by batting .344/.479/.604 with 17 doubles, 19 home runs and 43/58 K/BB ration in 83 games. However, his season was cut short due to his participation in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, in which he batted .360/.385/.760 with three home runs in 25 at-bats.

Suitors/Contract

At 26 years old, Abreu is considered to be in the prime of his career and therefore expected to receive a large contract from an MLB organization. And, as Badler noted, with the depleted market for free-agent first basemen heading into the offseason, the demand for Abreu’s services will inevitably build over the coming months.

As of now, it’s expected that the top first baseman on the market will be Boston’s Mike Napoli, who turns 32 later in the fall. Abreu is viewed as an immediate impact hitter in the major leagues just as Cespedes and Yasiel Puig were previously.

It just so happens that many of the teams needing a first baseman next season are those capable of breaking the bank to offer Abreu a very large contract. The Red Sox and Rangers seem to be the most likely suitors due to their instability at the position and overall desire to be in the playoff hunt every season. Meanwhile, other teams that could be in the mix for Abreu’s services include the White Sox, Blue Jays and Mets.

If all goes as planned, Abreu should be able to command significantly larger contracts than fellow defectors Cespedes and Puig. That said, I think we’ll see him land a deal north of $70 million.

2013 – BACK FOR MORE!

The 2013 World Baseball Challenge will be the third edition, and the strongest yet. The five-team tournament will feature tremendous parity with Team Canada, USA, Cuba (Ciego de Avila Tigers from their National Series), the Chinese Taipei National Team, and the Japanese Intercity League champion team JX-Eneos of Yokohama, who defeated Toshiba-Japan (2011 Japan representative) by a score of 7-1 en route to the “Industrial League” title. There are no easy games on the schedule for anyone, and the excitement is building – will USA return to the champions role? Will Cuba repeat? Will Japan or Chinese-Taipei, or the host Canadians, come out on top? Having USA and Cuba in the same tournament is exciting on its own, but Chinese Taipei, Japan and the host Canadians will definitely have something to say about things before the trophy is awarded.

Summer is not summer in Japan without High School Baseball

95th National High School Baseball Championship at Koshien for 15 days from August 8

by Baseball Federation of Japan

Total 49 teams of the winners of 47 regional (prefectural) championship (including 2 from Northern and Southern parts of Hokkaido and 2 from Eastern and Western parts of Tokyo) started to play knock-out competition at Hanshin Koshien Stadium in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture and every single game broadcast national by NHK. 4032 High School teams in 47 prefectures are currently registered with Japan High School Baseball Federation (JHBF)

President Lee, Byung-Suk, Continental Vice President of IBAF and President of Korea Baseball Association (KBA) and Mrs. Kim Eun Young, Vice President of KBA observed Opening Ceremony and a game of Day 1 on August 8 as special guests of JHBF at the ball park packed with over 40,000 fans.

The August 2 issue of The Japan Times characterizes Koshien baseball as being:

•The frenetic, non-stop cheering of student bodies
•The singing of the school song by the victorious nine: This honor follows every game.
•The gathering of dirt: Losing teams typically scoop infield soil into their bags as a memento of having played on Japan’s most hallowed field.
•Weeping: Is there any nation on earth that enjoys a good cry as much as Japan? Koshien, with its single-elimination dramatics, offers the perfect opportunity. And television viewers across the land bite back tears in shared sympathy, an entire nation united as one in sniffles.

Status of posting system may put Tanaka in limbo

by Jason Coskrey

Staff Writer

Aug 15, 2013

Masahiro Tanaka figures to be one of the most intriguing NPB exports if the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles decide to post the star right-hander after the season.

It’s widely believed Tanaka will request to make the move to the major leagues, and that Rakuten will acquiesce, but there is a slight possibility there won’t be a posting system for him to use this year.

Negotiations concerning changes to the system have been ongoing since last year, but Sports Nippon is reporting that because the MLB’s focus has been so tied up in its ongoing drug scandal, a new agreement might not be in place in time for the 2013 offseason. The paper says the talks have been positive.

If a system is not agreed upon by the offseason, it would leave contracted NPB players like Tanaka without a clear path toward making the jump to the U.S. in the offseason.

“We are in negotiations right now. I’m afraid that that is all we can say at the moment,” Nobby Ito, NPB’s chief of International Baseball Operations told The Japan Times.

An MLB representative could not be reached for comment.

It was the MLB that reportedly wanted to tweak the system, which was signed into existence in 1998 in response to the problems raised in prior seasons by the moves of Hideo Nomo, Hideki Irabu and Alfonso Soriano from Japan to the majors, with their teams receiving nothing in return.

The system is an expensive endeavour for MLB clubs, which must first pay a posting fee, decided through a blind bidding process, to a player’s NPB team, then sign him to a separate contract.

The Seattle Mariners got more than their money’s worth out of the over $27 million investment ($13 million posting fee and $14 million contract) spent on Ichiro Suzuki in 2000, and Yu Darvish is currently paying dividends for the Texas Rangers, who spent over $113 million ($51 million fee plus $62 million deal) to acquire him in 2012.

The New York Yankees, however, famously spent $46 million ($26 million fee, $20 million deal) on Kei Igawa in 2006, only to see him be a colossal bust.

Yahoo Sports reported last year that MLB was talking about turning the blind bidding process into an open auction, which might lower posting fees. Such a change would also likely result in players pocketing more money, something MLB and its union are said to favor.

While NPB teams would probably be happy to maintain the status quo, that is not seen as a hinderance in the talks.

“We are talking about things, including that right now,” Ito said.

2013 Summer Koshien: Players To Watch

The 2013 summer Koshien kicked off on August 8th. The 49-team, single elimination tournament will be held for the next 15 days. For those who, if, anyone have interest in the tournament, here're some players to watch.
Image
Tomohiro Anraku:
School: Saibi HS
Pos: RHP
Height: 6-2/Weight: 187
Bats: L/Throws: R

Many things have been said and done about Tomohiro Anraku. The 16-year old flamethrower tossed 772 pitches in spring Koshien. EAPN features a brilliant story about him. In 5 games in Kochi prefecture regional tournament for summer Koshien, Anraku tossed 40.1 solid innings, gave up 5 runs on 18 hits, walked 4, struck out 46. And, say, he threw 506 pitches in 12 days this time. He hit 97 on the gun on July 26.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwStIl0lKn4

After generating international attention this spring—both for his incredible talent and draining workload—Japanese phenom Tomohiro Anraku is back.

Baseball America chronicled all of Anraku’s starts at Spring Koshien, where the 16-year-old righthander touched 94 mph and carried Saibi High (Ehime Prefecture) to the Spring Koshien final. Anraku amassed 772 pitches in nine days, including a 232-pitch outing in his first game.

He threw a 159-pitch start, came back on one day of rest to throw a 138-pitch complete game followed the next day by a 134-pitch complete game. On the mound in the final for the third straight day, Anraku looked exhausted, sat at 78-85 mph, topped out at 88 and gave up nine runs in six innings before Saibi High brought in another pitcher for the first time the entire tournament in a 17-1 loss.

Pitching last night in Saibi’s first Summer Koshien game in front of 47,000 fans, Anraku touched 96 mph and was effective for most of the game, though the final line doesn’t reflect it. Anraku gave up two runs in the first inning before rattling off seven straight scoreless innings. Back on the mound for the ninth with a 9-2 lead, Anraku allowed five runs before getting out of danger to hold on for the 9-7 victory. He threw 137 pitches with seven strikeouts, no walks, one hit batsman and 11 hits allowed.

Having grown an inch to 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, Anraku appeared to be consciously pacing himself for what he certainly knows could be a long grind ahead, controlling his effort level based on the situation. For most of his start, he sat at 88-92 mph, but he reached back for more when he wanted the extra velocity, ramping up to hit 95 several times throughout the game.

Anraku mixed in his offspeed pitches liberally. He dropped a slow 65-69 mph curveball early in counts, then thew it in the mid-to-high 70s when he got ahead, along with an 83-85 mph slider and a mid-80s changeup. He was able to freeze hitters looking at strike three on the outside corner with his fastball at times, though his secondary pitches and command were a little erratic. But that’s nitpicking when evaluating a 16-year-old throwing in the mid-90s.

Anraku, who has one year of high school remaining, already touched 97 mph earlier this summer. A 16-year-old pitcher throwing 97 mph in Latin America is unheard of, but it’s unlikely Anraku will be signing with a major league team any time soon, as Japanese prep players rarely do so and instead head to Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball after graduating high school.

Immediately after the game ended, Anraku played some light catch in front of the dugout. He has to keep that arm warm—Saibi High will be counting on him to throw another complete game in a few days.

Kazuya Ojima

Pos: LHP
Height: 5-7/ Weight: 161

Like Anraku, Ojima is a junior and the team's best starter. Unlike Anraku, he doesn't throw a gas. His fastball barely hits 90, sits at low-to-mid 80s most of the time. He mixes a low-70s slider, mid-70s change up, mid-60s curve and commands them well. Although when I saw him last November, he walked 8 in 9 innings. He hides ball well. He's more polished than most of 17-year old pitchers in the world, but his upside is low. Ojima threw a perfect game on July 27 (the video above features all 27 outs from the game).

Uebayashi is the best outfield prospect in his class. He sprays the ball to all the field and is a solid middle hitter. Speed is also part of his game. He clocks 4.0-4.1 on home to first and has above average range in center field. Arm will keep him in the position. Shows good instinct on the basepath.

Tomoya Mori
School: Osaka Toin
Pos: C
Height: 5-6/ Weight: 176
Bats: L/ Throws: R

Despite the small frame, Mori has been the best high school back stop for years. An NPB scout quotes "he could be a starting catcher at NPB level, for now." He calls his game well and has the best arm in the entire amateur ball, including college and industrial leagues. Pop time averages 1.9. He's a weapon in the offensive side as well. The slugger has 31 long balls in his high school career and likely to add a couple more in the tournament. He hits the lead-off spot and clocks 4.2 on home to first from the left side. He was named the best catcher in last year's IBAF 18U world cup which was held in South Korea, over Reese McGuire, Chris Okay, and Jeremy Martinez.
