VT'er, I can't say I am informed enough on who is still out there to have a preference.

BTW, here is a previous posting about Brett Myers dated December 30 ....interesting

Brett Myers - R - White Sox - December 30

A National League general manager told Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe that Brett Myers has "been asking for too much money."

"The feeling is he's been asking for too much money," the GM said. "I think teams are waiting for the price to come down. He can certainly help a team. I think a lot of teams have him on a wish list." After spending all of 2012 in the bullpen, Myers is seeking a starting job for 2013. The Padres, Twins and Orioles are among the teams known to have interest in the veteran right-hander.

FOX Sports' Jon Paul Morosi reports that the Indians "have had dialogue" with Shaun Marcum.
Morosi says "it's not clear yet" whether Cleveland's signing of Brett Myers will affect a potential pursuit of Marcum. The Indians have room in their rotation for another addition, but it remains to be seen if they have enough cash to make it happen. Marcum has also drawn interest from the Royals, Twins and Padres.

Myers wanted to be paid as a starter and not as a reliever. I would guess he got 6+ million for this year with a team option for 8 million in 2014.

Brett Myers - R - White Sox

According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Indians have reached a one-year contract with Brett Myers.
The deal includes a club option for 2014. Myers, 32, had a solid 3.31 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 41/15 K/BB ratio in 65 1/3 innings of relief last year between the Astros and White Sox. He'll return to starting duties with Cleveland.
Just for the purpose of perspective, Brett Myers was about age 8 or 9 when Mark Shapiro joined the front office of The Cleveland Indians.

I think sometimes the Cleveland media chooses to shroud Mark Shapiro year after year in the "young front office guy" smoke and mirrors mist.

Lance Berkman - 1B - Cardinals

Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald hears that the Red Sox "are not believed to still be considering" Lance Berkman.
Lauber notes that Boston "expressed a degree of interest" in Berkman earlier in the offseason, but it appears that ship has sailed even with the Mike Napoli deal hanging in the balance. Berkman has received a bit of interest on the open market, but he seems likelier to retire at this point.
Well, since Berkman is one DH candidate available, he would be an obvious desire for me at DH. Doesn't sound likely though - but I do think the hiring of Francona and the increased spending might make it a bit more possible.

Myers and Swisher will require 2 roster moves.
Lots of spare parts remain, e.g. Blake Wood, Thomas Neal, T.J. House, we don't need both Mike McDade and Chris McGuiness.

Do you agree about which DH?
I was quite serious about signing Manny to a minor league contract with a spring training invite and an opportunity to win the DH job.

We're not signing Manny joe. With Myers on board I think we might take a look at younger starters for A Cab and Perez. Guys a year or two away. Still think they both get moved before the end of the season. Man would I be working on an extension for Masterson though. He is going to get a $100M contract if he hits the market....

He will hit the market or be traded. The Indians have no desire to extend Masterson at even 75% of current market value.

Not based on his performance the last season and a half. I think most teams are back to viewing him as a reliever rather than a starter. The Justin of last half of 2010 and first half of 2011 was in line for a big contract. But which is the real one?

Everyone should be happy now.

Indians claimed INF/OF Russ Canzler off waivers from the Blue Jays.
Canzler was designated for assignment by the Indians last month and quickly scooped up by the Blue Jays, but Toronto has now given him back. The 26-year-old batted just .269/.299/.398 in 97 plate appearances last season.

Indians designated RHP Jeanmar Gomez for assignment.

Gomez posted an ugly 5.96 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 90 2/3 innings for the Tribe last season. He's only 24 years old, though, so he should draw some interest on waivers.

The Canzler merry-go-round has stopped(for a while).

Tribe likes him and wanted to keep him in Columbus off the 40 man and tried to slide him through waivers but Toronto snagged him.

Then Toronto tried to slide him through waivers and the Tribe knew they made a mistake and got him back.

They'll probably try to slide him through waivers again at the end of ST when teams are cutting down their rosters.

Kind of but not too surprised about Gomez. When I looked at the roster earlier today, I thought he could be a prospect to be DFA'd. Gomez was a surprise as a successful major league starter and I doubt he'll ever achieve that success again. He was a minor league pick of mine years back but they never turn out.
