The right handed star for Villa Clara Freddy Asiel Alvarez was this year's winner of Game # 4 of the championship series against Mantanzas to win 5-2 and with stellar work surrendering only 2 hits in 7 innings with 8 strikeouts.

USA Baseball and Cuban Baseball Federation announced today that their respective national teams will play for the second consecutive year a five-game friendly series.

Last year the two countries revived the series after 16 years. On that occasion the USA team traveled to Havana to hold the five game series in which the Cubans won 3-2.

For this year's edition of the 2013 Series, the Cuban team will travel to the U.S. on a tour in four cities including Des Moines, Iowa, Omaha, Nebraska, Cary, North Carolina and Durham, North Carolina.

The executive director of USA Baseball, Mr Paul Seiler, said he felt extremely pleased to receive the Cuban team again.

The series will be the first on American soil since 1996 when Cuba won the series 3-2 in the five games played in minor league parks.

This time the series will begin on July 18 in Des Moines, Iowa, in the center of the USA. The game will be held at Principal Park in Des Moines and will begin at 7:05 (8:05 Eastern time in the United States and Havana.)

Then they will travel to continue the series on 19 and 20 at Omaha, Nebraska with the same start time.

Then they move on to the Eastern United States, specifically to North Carolina, and play games 4 and 5 in the cities of Cary and Durham respectively. The start time for the last two games will be at night 7:05 U.S. Eastern time and Havana.

Cuba and the United States began this series of friendly games in Havana in 1987 and lasted until 1996 when politically motivated disruption generated at that time under the presidency of Bill Clinton in the United States and Fidel Castro in Cuba.

Earlier, in the 70s some games were held but nothing with the formality of this bilateral series established in 1987 and started in Havana's Latin American Stadium.

Cuba has made no announcement yet on the roster to submit to the league, but is expected - as happened in previous series with players from the main national team.

Despaigne and Samon to play in the Mexican Summer League

by Ray Otero

June 18, 2013

It's been confirmed by the news report, Granma players Alfredo Despaigne and Yordanis Samon, left for Mexico to take part in the Mexican Professional Baseball League (LMB) as part of a sports contract between the Mexican and Cuban entity Cuba Deportes.

Despaigne and Samon arrived in Havana on Monday for a meeting with Cuban sports authorities shortly before their departure to the Aztec country.

The two sluggers from the island will join Michel Enriquez, also from Cuba, who, since last June 14 joined the team of the Pirates of Campeche.

Despaigne and Samon are two of the most feared sluggers of the current Cuban baseball league.

Despaigne also enjoys his status as a member of Cuba's national team.

Samon is one of the best hitters in the Cuban baseball league but very underrated.

Moreover, Despaigne, 27 years old, was the most prolific home run hitter in Cuba. The Granma player has the current record for homers is a season after hitting 36 in the 2011-2012 season during a 90 game baseball season. This season Despaigne batted his way to a second batting title with league best .382 (262-100) batting average. The left fielder hit 17 homers and drove in a total of 50 runs with a .523 OBP and .649 slugging this season.

Meanwhile Samon had numbers very close to his partner playing for the same Granma team. Samon played in 84 games batted .354 (305-108) with 16 homers and 61 RBIs. The big first baseman had .434 OBP and .577 slugging.

Michel Enriquez became the first Cuban player officially active in the Cuban National Series, to take part in a professional league at any level. With Despaigne and Samon, Cuba Deportes indicates that a precedent is being set that seems to be the fate of Cuban baseball in the very near future. With the integration (defections) of their players to foreign leagues without being able to leave and return home to play in the National Series, changes could be on the horizon.

Note: The Mexican League, according to the standards of North American professional baseball, is similar to Triple-A .

Hinojosa left Cuba last February and in May began his request to play for MLB (Major League Baseball). So far several teams the majors have shown interest in the 27 year old right-hander. The Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees the teams most interested.

Hinojosa participated in 8 National Series where he had a record of 41-37 (. 526) with 462 strikeouts in 646.1 innings. The righty had an ERA of 4.29 and his best season was 2012 when he threw for a 9-7 record with a 3.40 ERA while striking out 115 in 121.2 of work.

The righty took part in two postseasons with his Guantanamo team (2010 and 2011) and accumulated a record of 1-3 and a high 4.50 ERA. Hinojosa also struck out 27 in 32 innings. Rookie Otani makes All-Star team as outfielder

Highly touted Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters rookie Shohei Otani was selected third in fan balloting among Pacific League outfielders to make the roster for the upcoming All-Star Series after the final results were announced on Monday.

The 18-year-old Otani, who failed to make the top 10 among PL starting pitchers, is the first rookie out of high school to be named since Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles ace right-hander Masahiro Tanaka appeared in the midsummer classic in his rookie season in 2007.

“I want to be able swing the bat hard and enjoy playing,” said Otani. “All the star players will be gathered. I’d like to learn a lot from the atmosphere there.”

The late Yukio Ozaki, who dropped out of high school to join the Fighters when they were still called the Toei Flyers in 1962, was chosen as an All-Star at the age of 17 in a year in which he won 20 games to lead the team to the PL pennant.

Orix Buffaloes outfielder Yoshio Itoi was the top vote-getter with 439,518 votes, while two-time home run king Wladimir Balentien of the Tokyo Yakult Swallows garnered the most in the Central League with 328,032.

“It’s an honor to be chosen even with a new team,” said Itoi, a fan favorite with the Fighters before moving to Orix in the offseason. “I am shocked to get the most votes. I want to give my utmost performance and win some kind of prize during the series.”

Hiroshima Carp ace Kenta Maeda overtook Hanshin Tigers rookie Shintaro Fujinami, who was the top vote-getter among CL starters at the midway point in fan balloting, with 249,583 votes. Fujinami was third with 154,574.

Rakuten’s Tanaka, who topped PL starters with 159,928 votes, was selected via fan balloting for the second time.

As a team, Orix had the most vote-getters in the PL with four players named, among them Yoshihisa Hirano (closer), Lee Dae-ho (first base) and Hikaru Ito (catcher).

The Seibu Lions were the only team not to have any players selected for the All-Star Series.

The results of the players’ votes will be announced on Thursday. The managers’ picks of players will be announced on July 1 before each league adds an additional member on July 10 as a special entry.

Game 1 is scheduled for July 19 at Sapporo Dome, followed by Game 2 at Jingu Stadium on the 20th and Game 3 on the 22nd at Iwaki Green Stadium in Fukushima Prefecture.

Cuban outfielder Alvarez ready to join MLB

By Jesse Sanchez / MLB.com | 6/27/2013 9:33 P.M. ET

Cuban outfield prospect Dariel Alvarez is ready to sign with a Major League club.

On Thursday, Alvarez, 24, a right-handed hitter who played for Camaguey in Serie Nacional, told MLB.com that he was declared a free agent by the Commissioner's Office in January and cleared by the U.S. government to enter into a contract with a big league club a month later. He said a change in representation is part of the reason his appearance on the market has been delayed.

"I am ready," Alvarez said. "I can sign. Just waiting on the best opportunity."

On Wednesday, Alvarez starred in an open showcase in front of a group of scouts that included representatives from the Dodgers, Rangers, Red Sox and Yankees in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The Marlins did not attend the workout.

Alvarez defected from Cuba last summer and later played professionally in Vera Cruz, Mexico. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder can play all three outfield positions and has impressed Major League scouts with his above-average arm.

Because Alvarez is at least 23 years old and has played at least three seasons in a Cuban professional league, he is not subject to the new international signing guidelines established by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

All-Star managers fill out squads

Kyodo

Hideki Kuriyama (left); Tatsunori Hara (right)

The rosters for this summer’s All-Star Series were fleshed out on Monday as Central League manager Tatsunori Hara and Pacific League skipper Hideki Kuriyama named 33 players between them on Monday for the three-game series starting on July 19.

“No matter what, I want to win the All-Star games. I have to make sure to think about ensuring players don’t get hurt,” said Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters manager Kuriyama at Tokyo Dome prior to a game against the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks. “The Pacific League has a lot of great players, and I want everyone to know who they are.”

Each manager added 11 pitchers to those picked by the players and fans.

Hara, the Yomiuri Giants skipper, named eight starting pitchers, including four rookie right-handers: The Hanshin Tigers’ Shintaro Fujinami, the Tokyo Yakult Swallows’ Yasuhiro Ogawa, whose eight wins leads the CL, the Yokohama BayStars’ Kazuki Mishima and Hara’s nephew from the Giants, Tomoyuki Sugano.

Kuriyama added five starters and six relievers, although Fighters rookie Shohei Otani, voted to the team by fans as an outfielder despite being one of Nippon Ham’s starters, is not among the PL starters.

One of the players added to the PL squad on Monday was Hawks outfielder Yuya Hasegawa, the league’s batting leader and this year’s interleague MVP.

“The nerves you feel at an All-Star game are different from the regular season,” said Hasegawa, who will be making his second appearance in the summer series.

“It’s not the time yet to start thinking about the games, but as they get close, I know I’m going to feel really happy. When the games start, I can’t be anything but the player I am, so I want to play the same way I do in the regular season.”

While 17 players will be making their All-Star debuts, Hara picked milestone-making catcher Motonobu Tanishige of the Chunichi Dragons, who will be making his 11th appearance for the CL, the most on either squad.

“Considering my age, this is probably going to be my last chance, so I intend to enjoy it,” said the 42-year-old who reached 2,000 hits earlier this season, and on Sunday took over the No. 2 spot in career games played.

“At first I thought, ‘Am I really worthy of this?’ ” he said. “But I’m used to it now.”

Neither manager added a foreign player to the roster, with Kuriyama skipping his own designated hitter with the Fighters, Michel Abreu, who was second in the PL in home runs and third in RBIs before Nippon Ham’s game against Softbank.

The final player on each team’s 32-man roster will be decided by Internet ballot and announced on July 10.

The Ongoing Dutch Magical Spell Over Cuba Continues in Rotterdam

by Peter C. Bjarkman
Image
It is quickly becoming an old and tired story but the Dutch national squad seems to have Team Cuba’s number.

First came two tense defeats in Panama during September 2011 (IBAF World Cup) authored mainly by the highly effective hurling of first Orlando Yntema (second round) and later Rob Cordemans (gold medal game).

Then the plot thickened with a bitter pair of setbacks ousting Victor Mesa’s talented if underperforming club from the recent World Baseball Classic in Tokyo.

Last night’s 7-0 whitewashing in Rotterdam at the hands of a stripped-down Dutch squad lacking the bulk of its WBC lineup was the fifth major loss to the Orangemen in the last six outings.

The only relief over the three-year span was the 4-0 Cuban victory (behind stellar mound work by Vladimir García) during last summer’s Haarlem Baseball Week here in Europe. And it may only get worse in the near future with an immediate rematch on tap for Wednesday evening and a still-very-likely Cuba-Dutch showdown here at Neptunus Family Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The increasingly monotonous Dutch mastery once again was orchestrated last night by yet another round of brilliant mound work by veteran right hander Rob Cordemans; this time out the 38-year-old former pro actually trumped his 2011 gold medal showcase performance at Panama City while performing on a lesser stage here in Rotterdam.

Cordemans breezed through a near-flawless complete-game effort in which he scattered seven Cuban singles, never allowed an extra-base knock or a runner to advance past second, and induced 15 of the necessary 27 outs via tame infield or outfield flies that were easy targets for his competent defenders. Cordemans struck out only two but kept Cuban hitters harmlessly at bay with six one-two-three innings. The game was decided in the middle innings when the Dutch struck for a pair of runs against Cuban starter Noelvis Entenza who gave up six hits over four-plus frames before departing with the bases jammed and none retired in the fifth.

Last night’s game in reality was not as one-sided as it might have appeared on the final scoreboard. Entering the top of the eighth the Caribbean islanders were down by only a slim 2-0 margin and still very much in the middle of the fray despite the first seven innings of relative impotency at the hands of Cordemans.

With only seven pitchers on hand (actually only six since Sunday’s starter Ismel Jiménez was already spent and thus unavailable for the next several days) manager Yovani Aragón was hesitant to start burning up his bullpen in the face of several crucial matches (including an immediate Wednesday rematch with these same Dutch) looming on the horizon.

If Cuba fails to reach the finals here in Rotterdam, the decision not to expand the Occidentales mound staff with a few extra arms will likely prove to be the all-too-obvious root of the problem. A short-duration one-week event with almost every game providing a must-win situation amplifies the need for a bevy of fresh arms.

All three of the week’s opponents have brought ten pitchers to Rotterdam; Cuba entered battle with a short arsenal of but eight available hurlers (only four true relievers), and then was immediately further handicapped by the unexpected departure of versatile starter Odrisamer Despaigne before the week’s first pitch was even tossed.

Monday night clearly displayed the problems now plaguing manager Aragón and technical director Victor Mesa as a direct consequence of the shortfall in available pitching. Already behind by four runs (an apparently insurmountable lead in the face of Cordeman’s mastery), the Cuban brain trust was unwilling to burn up extra arms in the eighth and ninth innings and therefore likely left Jorge Hernández on the hill far longer than advisable.

The painful result was a late Dutch onslaught that only further soured the embarrassing drubbing. The Cienfuegos reliever performed brilliantly in the early going by working his way out of a bases loaded jam (no outs) upon his arrival in fifth. Hernández then breezed through six straight enemy batters in the sixth and seventh before the roof fell in during the eighth and ninth. In the late going the portly and rapidly tiring right hander surrendered five hits and five runs and further poisoned the waters with a wild pitch and a hit batsman.

But if the Cubans once more came up considerably short this time around it was far more due to weak offense than it was to any pitching breakdowns or roster shortfalls. With two solid singles in three trips to the plate, Yasmani Tomás was the only slugger in manager Aragón’s lineup to display even a small mastery of Cordeman’s effective assortment of breaking balls and off-speed deliveries.

Both Yulieski Gourriel (on two occasions) and José Dariel Abreu wacked long fly balls that were chased down by the Dutch outfield in a ballpark that seems to deaden even the hardest hit balls. Only twice (in the second and seventh) were the Cuban bats able to muster so much as a minor threat, stranding a pair of base runners on each occasion. On the whole it was one of the weakest displays on the part of frontline Cuban batsmen witnessed during any important game of recent memory. This was not a game in which the Cuban forces squandered their opportunities but rather one in which Cuban batters were never able to manufacture anything that even looked like a credible uprising.

Pitcher Abandons Team Cuba in Paris

By Ray Otero

History repeats itself again. A Cuban team taking part in a tournament being held in the Netherlands must do so without one of its pitchers. It happened in 2009 and 2011 with lefties Aroldis Chapman and Gerardo Concepcion, both now involved in US Major League Baseball. The latest desertion is Odrisamer Despaigne.

Despaigne, 26, a starter with Havana’s Industriales in the Cuban league and a member of Team Cuba’s squad at international tournaments, left the Cuban team at the Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, on the stopover in route to Rotterdam, Holland for a tournament that began on Sunday.

Despaigne, who is the son of former Cuban pitcher, Francisco Despaigne, presumably seeks reunion with his father who now lives in Spain, while his real intentions are suspected to be attempting to play professional baseball in the USA.

Odrisamer participated in 8 Cuban baseball seasons with Industriales. In the recently concluded season he had a 10-5 record and a 3.27 ERA while striking out 98 in 143 innings pitched. Despite his good year his team did not make it to the playoffs.
