walked only four times this season while striking out 31 times. Those kind of numbers sound similar to the numbers of one of the newest Cleveland Indians, right? Does the name Mark Reynolds ring a bell?
Not really. Reynolds draws lots of walks which makes his terrible batting average irrelevant.

Jose Ramirez

Venezuelan Winter League

•Paolo Espino (SP, Caribes de Anzoategui): 5.1 IP, 2 R/ER, 4 BB, 4 K, 1 HR. As has been the case for much of this winter, Espino has another solid, if unspectacular showing on Tuesday night. Espino has now pitched a total of 45 innings this winter. He's been consistent and has been able to get somewhat deep into games, but the one problem has been home runs. Espino has now allowed 11 in those 45 innings, which is an extremely high number. It sadly serves as some evidence as to why Espino is really nothing more than organizational depth.

•Asdrubal Cabrera (SS, Leones del Caracas): 0-for-3, 1 BB, 1 K. This was not one of Cabrera's better nights at the plate, but he still has had a very strong winter. So far, Cabrera has now gone 27-for-90 in 22 games this winter.

Dominican Winter League

•Jose Ramirez (2B, Toros del Este): 3-for-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 BB, 1 K. Does this kid ever slow down? Ramirez had what may have been his best game so far this winter as he fell just a home run shy of the cycle. One would think that the 20-year-old would start to tire from the high amount of games played this year, but it just has not happened yet. Overall, Ramirez has now gone 63-for-199. And guess what? The best may be yet to come. Who knows what kind of progress the switch-hitting infielder is capable of making this coming season?

•Jerry Gil (CP, Estrellas de Oriente): (S, 10), 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R/ER, 1 HR. After walking a tightrope in Monday's contest, Gil walked an even tighter one on Tuesday. Gil allowed two runs to score, which came off a two-run home run off the bat of top Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Starling Marte. Though, Gil still managed to get the job done and notch the save, which was his 10th save in 10 opportunities so far of this winter season. The Marte shot was also the first home run that Gil has allowed so far this winter.

Puerto Rican Winter League

•Roberto Perez (C, Indios de Mayaguez): 0-for-2, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K. The downward spiral continues for Perez. Perez had actually performed decently well this winter, but he has been unable to muster a hit since round robin playoffs began. The one thing he has continued to do nicely is draw walks. He has now drawn 15 and struck out 13 times.

Canada unveils provisional roster for Classic

By Andrew Simon / Special to MLB.com | 01/12/2013 8:32 PM ET

Canada submitted its 23-man provisional roster for the World Baseball Classic on Saturday, putting together a group that includes 15 current or former Major Leaguers, highlighted by Twins first baseman Justin Morneau.

The four-time All-Star and 2006 American League Most Valuable Player also played for his home country in the 2006 and '09 Classics, when Canada did not make it out of pool play.

This year's roster, which will be made official on Thursday, thus far includes several other established big leaguers, including Pirates catcher Russell Martin, Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie, Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders and right-handed relievers John Axford of the Brewers and Jesse Crain of the White Sox.

"I'm pleased to see that our roster consists of many players that have worn the Canadian colors before with our National Teams program," Canadian manager Ernie Whitt, himself a former Major Leaguer, told The Canadian Press. "The familiarity our players have with one another, and the coaching staff, will be beneficial in a short tournament like the World Baseball Classic."

Eight players on the provisional roster played in the 2009 Classic and seven participated in '06.

One player notably absent from the provisional roster is Reds first baseman and 2010 National League MVP Joey Votto. Sportsnet reported on Saturday that Votto, who was limited to 111 games by injury last season, needs to pass an insurance physical before he can be added to the roster.

"We have every reason to believe there will be no issue whatsoever," Canada coach Greg Hamilton told Sportsnet.

Others with big league experience on the current roster are pitchers Phillippe Aumont, Jim Henderson, Shawn Hill, Chris Leroux, Trystan Magnuson and Scott Mathieson, second basemen Taylor Green and Pete Orr and outfielder Adam Loewen.

Villa Clara's Rosa Yorkis

The Cuban Baseball Federation announced the preliminary roster of the national team for the third edition of the World Baseball Classic, to start the upcoming March 2 in Fukuoka, Japan and contained a total of 28 players divided into 3 receivers, 6 infielders , 6 outfielders and 13 pitchers. For the first time it does not include the 13-year old veteran Villa Clara's Ariel Pestano, catcher.

Ultimately the preliminary roster includes as follows:

Pitchers (13) : Freddy Asiel Alvarez (Villa Clara), Ismel Jiménez (Sancti Spiritus), Raciel Churches (Isle of Youth), Odrisamer Despaigne (Industrial), Norberto Gonzalez (Cienfuegos), Darien Nunez (Las Tunas), Wilber Perez (Isle of Youth), Yulieski González (Artemis), Vladimir Garcia (Ciego de Avila), Alexander Rodriguez (Guantanamo), Danny Betancourt (Santiago de Cuba). Vic Odelín (Camagüey) and Yander Guevara (Ciego de Avila).

Receivers (3) : Yulexis La Rosa (Villa Clara), Frank Camilo Morejon (Industrial), Eriel Sanchez (Sancti Spiritus).

Infielders (6) : José Dariel Abreu (Cienfuegos), Luis Felipe Rivera (Isle of Youth), José Miguel Fernández (Matanzas), Andy Ibáñez (Isle of Youth), Yulieski Gourriel (Sancti Spiritus), Erisbel Arruebarruena (Cienfuegos).

Image
Yulieski Gonzalez

The roster only has three repeaters from the squads of 2006 and 2009 appear in the names of Yulieski Gourriel, Frederich Cepeda, and lefty Norberto Gonzalez.

Three infielders and outfielders were on the squad in 2009, Frederich Cepeda, Yulieski Gourriel, and Alfredo Despaigne.

The same roster of 2009 repeated five pitchers, Danny Betancourt, Ismel Jimenez, Vladimir Garcia, Norberto Gonzalez, and Yulieski Gonzalez.

Victor Mesa defended his theory to rejuvenate the Cuban team by adding more youth as the only alternative for the future and try to promote good results. The theory contrasts with previous editions of national teams where experience was worth more than youth.

The preliminary roster can still change before February 20 when the final roster must be confirmed to the organizers tournament. The official announcement of the 16 teams participating in the tournament will be on Thursday by Major League Baseball (MLB) in the United States beginning at 4:00 pm.

New WBC rules to limit pitch counts

Kyodo

NEW YORK —

The rules will be more stringent at the upcoming World Baseball Classic tournament in consideration of the workload on pitchers.

Pitchers will be limited to 65 pitches for the first round, 80 for the second round and 95 in the semifinals and final, FOX Sports reported Tuesday.

The changes reduce the number of pitches by five from the caps in 2009 that were set at 70, 85 and 100, respectively.

The measure will return pitch counts to the same caps as in the inaugural tournament in 2006.

Other changes in this year's tournament include playing the championship game to completion with mercy rules for other games in the tournament, and not allowing pitchers to appear in more than one game on the same day.

Aguilar has won the support of the Leones fans/ AJ Photo

Jesus Aguilar fulfilled his childhood dream

RAFAEL TEJERA

Jesus Aguilar hit three homers in a minor league game two years ago. But not trade them for the three he hit in three consecutive games for Caracas. In fact, not even trade them for the one he connected for in University Stadium, against the Caribes.

"That was the best," said the first baseman. "It's something that has no explanation. It was the best of my career. A child dreams of hitting a home run to decide a game that day and fulfilled my dream ".

Aguilar has become one of the power forces of Caracas in the round robin. The absence of Josh Kroeger opened a door for Aguilar to play and slugger has done everything to stay in the lineup. After having played only three games in the semfinal, became the circuit leader in homers and third in RBIs.

"That shows how hard he has worked as well as the guys who are not regulars like (Daniel) Mayora and (Ronald) Bermudez," said the manager of the lions, Frank Kremblas.

Aguilar himself acknowledges that he has had to get used to dealing with inactivity, something that is alien to him in America, where he is a prospect of the Cleveland Indians. "Since the arrival of the major leaguers, I was not playing and I had to prepare myself physically and mentally," he said. "Every day I stay prepared. It was almost two weeks before I got a turn"

The assistant hitting coach, Brian McArn, also recognizes what the first baseman did to stay fit. Especially his strength conditioning to keep giving big swings like the game against Magallanes where he homered to the opposite field just inside the foul pole.

"He worked hard but the best thing was the good attitude," the coach said. "He went to the parallel league and arranged his swing. We must also give credit to the coaches there. Now we are glad to see him succeeding. "

Aguilar's power is not new. In minor league he has been, over the past two seasons, the Venezuelan second highest number of runs in the minor leagues. In 2012, also attended the All-Star Futures Game.

"I always talk to (Gregorio) Petit and he advised me," said Aguilar. "He was one of the people I confided in. His support was very positive. "

The best prize to receive for this work was the home run he hit against the Caribbeans. "I was up at the plate and I felt I had the strength to win one for the team, "he acknowledged. "I have not played in the big leagues, but playing here does not compare to any other place. The fans are so intense they saw the best home run of my career. "

Jairo Asencio was suspended by the Toros

Jairo Asencio suspension creates a strong vacuum in the bullpen of the Bulls

LA ROMANA.

The directors of the Toros del Este decided yesterday that the pitcher Jairo Asencio be suspended for the remainder of the season by incurring a recidivist inappropriate attitude which contrasts with the discipline and team goals, a team which is currently moving to the series end as one of the two qualifiers in the semifinal round of the tournament of Dominican winter baseball.

In a press release, the high command of the romanense team states that the attitude of Asencio, besides being a recidivist, lacked respect for the game, his teammates, the fans and the franchise, based in this city.

Asencio was leader in saves (12) in the regular season, "but that does not give him the right to violate the code of discipline and dedication to the cause that prevails within the team as a whole," the statement concluded.

Fabio Castillo and Jose Rafael Diaz have assumed the role of team orange closers.

Asdrubal Cabrera

Venezuelan Winter League

•Asdrubal Cabrera (SS, Leones del Caracas): 1-for-4, 1 BB, 1 K. Not an outstanding performance by Cabrera, but at least he was able to still muster one base knock. The switch-hitting shortstop has now gone 28-for-94 this winter. It's a much better performance than Cabrera has had in either of the previous past two winter seasons, so that has to be considered a positive with spring training looming.

•Ezequiel Carrera (LF, Navegantes del Magallanes): 1-for-4, 2 K. After a rare day off on Tuesday, Carrera was back at it on Wednesday and collected one hit. Carrera has now gone 44-for-158 this winter.

Dominican Winter League

•Jose Ramirez (2B, Toros del Este): 1-for-4, R, 2 K. Unfortunately, Ramirez's time in winter leagues may be drawing to a close. His team, Toros del Este trailed Leones del Escogido by one game with two games left to play heading into Wednesday's contest. Unfortunately for Ramirez, Leones del Escogido defeated Toros del Este 4-3 on Wednesday. Ramirez may have one final swan song on Thursday. Let's hope he makes it a memorable one. It's rare to see a player make so much noise in a winter season, but Ramirez has done just that.

For the U.S., there will be four players back from the 2009 team, which lost in the semifinals to two-time Classic champion Japan: Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins, Red Sox right fielder Shane Victorino, Brewers left fielder Ryan Braun and Mets third baseman David Wright.

Rollins is expected to start this time at short, Braun -- the 2011 NL MVP -- will be the left fielder and Victorino likely will come off the bench. R.A. Dickey, the reigning NL Cy Young winner who was traded this offseason from the Mets to the Blue Jays, will anchor the starting staff and Wright, one of the first players to commit to this year's team, will be the starting third baseman.

Team USA manager Joe Torre and general manager Joe Garagiola Jr. will eventually fill out the 28-man roster with 13 position players and 15 pitchers. They announced the 13 position players, but one spot for a starting pitcher is open and that could very well go to the Tigers' Justin Verlander depending on how he feels once he starts throwing at Spring Training next month. Provisional rosters were due on Wednesday, but all 16 teams have until Feb. 20 to file their formal rosters.

"I'm excited about this team we put together and I'm pleased that the players seem to be equally excited," Torre said Wednesday from the Dominican Republic, where he was attending an amateur international baseball tournament in his capacity as Major League Baseball's executive vice president of baseball operations. "That's important that these guys have the passion to represent USA and hopefully we'll do good things."

The team will gather at the Salt River Fields at Talking Stick complex in Scottsdale, Ariz., on March 1 and open its leg of the tournament against Mexico at Chase Field in Phoenix on March 8. Canada and Italy are the other two teams in its bracket. The finals are scheduled to be played at San Francisco's AT&T Park on March 19.

Around the diamond, the U.S. will have a starting eight of Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira, Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips, Rollins, Wright, Twins catcher Joe Mauer, Braun, Orioles center fielder Adam Jones and Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton.

"I'm just so excited to be part of this year's team," said Teixeira, who played on Team USA in the inaugural Classic, when he was a member of the Rangers. "In 2006, I was just a kid. I was 25 years old on the first World Baseball Classic team, looking at guys like Roger Clemens and Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez -- some of the greats of the game. I was actually in awe my first time around. Now I'm coming back. I'm the only guy left from the 2006 team. I'm one of the veterans now."

The bench will include Victorino, plus Ben Zobrist of the Rays and Willie Bloomquist of the D-backs in the infield. The backup catchers are Jonathan Lucroy of the Brewers and J.P. Arencibia of the Blue Jays, who has been working with Dickey in Nashville, Tenn., learning how to catch his knuckleball.

Aside from Dickey, the U.S. has invited Giants right-hander Ryan Vogelsong, Rangers left-hander Derek Holland and Braves right-hander Kris Medlen to be part of the starting rotation. The bullpen includes closers Craig Kimbrel of the Braves and Chris Perez of the Indians. The rest of the bullpen is replete with Perez's Cleveland teammate Vinnie Pestano, Luke Gregerson of the Padres, Heath Bell of the D-backs, Glen Perkins of the Twins, Steve Cishek of the Marlins, Jeremy Affeldt of the Giants, Tim Collins of the Royals and Mitchell Boggs of the Cardinals.

"It's definitely a different challenge," Braun said. "I think it's advantageous to me to know what I'm getting myself into and have a better idea of how I need to prepare to play nine innings right away and to play some very meaningful baseball games. It's a lot different than it would be preparing for a regular Spring Training. I've already done it once."

The U.S. has never reached the finals, losing in the second round in 2006 and in the semifinals at Dodger Stadium in '09.

This time, at least making it the final game, if not winning it all, is an imperative. To that end, Torre has come out of retirement to manage. His on-field career ended in 2010 with the Dodgers after a 12-year span with the Yankees from 1996-2007, during which his club made the playoffs every year, winning four World Series and six American League pennants. That postseason streak went to 14 in a row when the Dodgers reached the National League Championship Series in 2008-09, losing to the Phillies each time.

Torre's coaching staff is replete with big names: Larry Bowa is the bench coach, Willie Randolph the third-base coach, Dale Murphy the first-base coach, Gerald Perry the hitting coach and Greg Maddux and Marcel Lachemann are pitching coaches.

Torre and Garagiola have spent months combing MLB rosters for players who wanted to play in the Classic.

"With this year's club, I knew what I needed to do," Torre said. "[Just about] every single player on this list, I talked to personally. Every single one of them is excited about the prospects of representing the USA in this Classic and that makes me excited. I managed a long time and I played a long time, we have a lot of ability but the thing that sets us apart is the desire and determination and pride you take in playing this game of baseball and I sense that from the guys on this club."

Pitching is always problematic because of limitations. Starters are restricted to 65 pitches in the first round, 80 in the second and 95 in the semifinals and finals. A starter must take four days off if he throws more than 50 pitches.

Relievers can pitch on back-to-back days if they don't exceed 30 pitches the first day. Throw 30 in a game and you must take one off. After back-to-back appearances, regardless of pitch counts, pitchers must get a day off.

"We put it together, not necessarily like an All-Star team -- because when you have an All-Star team, you base it upon the fact that you'll have one player playing three innings and another playing three innings," Torre said. "We also need to pay attention to pitching. You have to have a deep pitching staff because there are limitations on both starters and relievers that time of year.

"It's going to be a little bit of a different makeup, but it's really a good ballclub I put together based on trying to do something that works and hopefully, we'll have good results."

Asencio, besides being a recidivist, lacked respect for the game, his teammates, the fans and the franchise, based in this city.

What did he do??

Very interesting. This should be a very competitive Classic compared to the past. Looks like Team USA is pretty serious about winning this thing after getting embarassed the first two times around. Looks like Team USA is the team to beat.

The Cuban roster looks like a very good one. The Cubans should provide some heavy competition for the USA team.

Japan will field a very nice squad. They'll feature speed and defense. Their strength in the past two renditions of the Classic had been their pitching. Not so this time around. Their best pitchers are stateside and do not plan to attend the Classic. There is a lot of pressure from their employers to not attend.

The Dominicans will be strong as always.

Other than the US and the Japan squads, I havn't seen the other rosters yet.

This shapes up to be the most competitive Classic yet. I'm looking forward to watching many of these games.
