Grady Sizemore placed on 60-day DL

CLEVELAND -- The Indians have placed oft-injured center fielder Grady Sizemore on the 60-day disabled list and finalized their roster for opening day.

Sizemore, who underwent back surgery last month, will not be eligible to come off the DL until June 3. He has been in Cleveland doing his rehab. General manager Chris Antonetti said the three-time All-Star has been working on his stability and mobility and will resume baseball activities "in a couple weeks."

Sizemore re-signed with the Indians as a free agent this winter. He injured his back while fielding ground balls early in spring training.

The Indians also purchased the contracts of infielder Jose Lopez and reliever Dan Wheeler from Triple-A Columbus. The club placed left-hander David Huff on the 15-day DL with a strained right hamstring and designated outfielder Thomas Neal for assignment.

Leave some room on the 40 man roster. As Major League teams finalize their rosters, there have to be a few good players hitting the waiver wire, especially from the stronger teams. Is Antonetti smart enough to grab some help?

One thing I noticed as I looked over yesterdays games, the Indians/Jays game actually had the second highest attendance of all the openers yesterday. 43+ K even with the chilly weather. (BoSox at Detroit had the highest attendance at 45+ K)

Perez blew a save on Opening Day, but so did Valverde and now Rivera!

Disclaimer: Opening day loss and liquor may be tainting this mini-rant.

There is something that is pretty consistent about the Tribe's decisions before opening day that I dont like and want to get off my chest.

I ntice that many other teams give their youngsters chances to prove themselves and do not worry as much as we do about them getting bruised egos from failing at the big league level. We tend instead to protect them in the minors until they "prove" they are ready and by the way that is no assurance of success.

I used to blame Eric Wedge for this but Acta doing it also indicates my frustration probably need to be higher up. By the way I have written about this before.

This years example are the 2 pitchers we signed right at the end of ST Van der Hurk and Ascencio (sic). Now this has nothing to do with the latter losing the opening game, he did not pitch as poorly as the box score would indicate. But really, giving those 2 guys chances to amke the team with almost no real time viewing of how they would fit in is exasperating. Hagadone and the Taiwan guy might have been better choices.

Related to this is our insistance that contracts and/or age and experience is better than youth. I mean Wheeler, really?

The only time that it did not work this way is when ol Charlie Manuel insisted on giving CC an early chance. That did nor work out too badly.

As for Perez, he has too much Borowski in him. I am never very confident when he comes in, stats to the contrary. Too many baserunners, and a straight fastball that if not kept low is too easy to hit. The debacle the other day is not characteristiv also but I blame it on lack of enough experience in ST before opening day. Pestano seemed a better choice and had been warming up. Too bad we did not trade Perez for a RH bat and make Pestano the closer. Just an opinion.

Getting back to the youth business- any doubt that Pomeranz, if not traded, would not stand a chance of making this team even though we could use a lefty starter? He would be at Columbus for more "seasoning". Lets see what Colorado does with him. I am starting to think that Shapiro is behind most of this.

Tribe fans ask yourselves this question: You are ahead by 3 runs in the ninth and bring in a pitcher, Who are you more confident in holding the 3 run lead, Pestano or Perez?

No, he was terrible. Davis pulling a bone head play was the only reason he did not lose the game during his first inning.

You are right Rusty, more reason to question his being on the team. That really was a bonehead play by Davis. In the realm of Little League.

Lou, since he had no options and was acquired a week before the season he had to make the team. I would also assume that he was recommended by none other then Manny Acta who was familiar with Louis Valdez in the past.

I would also say that history actually shows that Shapiro or upper management give the field manager a long leash as far as the roster decisions.

CC is a great example. Manuel could not over rule upper management unless they let him. Wedge and Acta (who actually manage games very similar) favor veteran players just like 99% of all managers. Difference between Wedge and Acta is that Acta coddles players all the time. This has been pointed out by many members of the media that follow the team on a daily basis. Many are (were) calling him to treat them more like men when they screwed up before the season.
