WoW!

Last season, Treanor won it all with the Leones. He left Escogido to build Licey into a competitive team this year. Licey and the Aguilas have always battled it out for the top spot in this league, but, all of a sudden a temendous amount of parity with the infusion of all the young talent.

But! It's all about winning in the winter leagues. Their seasons are short and a lot of work has to done between the season openers and the playoffs. Too bad. Treanor is a good manager.

He threw the cry; Dean Treanor pitchers regrets poor performance of Licey

Dean Treanor

The Tigers manager of Licey, Dean Treanor, acknowledges that it has been a very difficult year in front of the blue troops, to the extent that they remain in last place in the standings.

"It's very difficult to win games when pitchers don't throw strikes," Treanor said before the game on Friday against the Lions of the Escogido.

Questionalble performances by players at several infield positions and getting the players their playing time was difficult according to the coach.

Already in Licey problems were reported by giving players playing time. This happened with Vladimir Guerrero, who left the team, plus Jordany Valdespín and Yamaico Navarro.

Treanor said the team still has a chance to get into the fight, but they need to play better the fundamentals of the game and keep pitchers on course in the encounters.

Dominican Winter League

•Juan Diaz (SS, Estrellas de Oriente): 3-for-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K: Diaz hit .266 for Triple A Columbus last year, hit .267 in his short big league stint, and is hitting .264 right now in the winter leagues. It is what it is with Diaz, but he is playing his best ball of the winter right now, going 6-for-10 over his last four ballgames, and of course, hit his first homer on Sunday night.

•Jose Ramirez (2B, Toros del Este): 2-for-4, 1 R: Ramirez is “only” hitting .273 over his last ten games, but is hitting .333 overall for Toros. This kid is putting up some exciting numbers, and has even managed to drive in ten runners in only 21 games. His slash line right now is .333/.440/.406.

•Chad Huffman (RF, Toros del Este):1-for-4, 1RBI, 2 K: Huffman now has hits in all four of his winter league games, and is 5-for-15 overall. The kid can play baseball, but continues to be a stopgap at Columbus.

•Carlos Santana (DH, Leones del Escogido): 1-for-4, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 K: Well, look who showed up at winter ball. Carlos Santana made his debut for Leones, and roped a double in his first game. It will be interesting to see how many games he plays, and if he gets some catching in, or just plays DH.

•Danny Salazar (SP, Leones del Escogido): 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R/ER, 1 BB, 4 K: Salazar faced off against knuckleballer Steven Wright, and held his own. Wright did go seven, while Salazar seems to be building up innings again. He went two in his first two appearances, three in his next two, and this was his first four inning stint. In 14 innings, he has only walked four, while striking out 17. Wright sure does look good. Can’t imagine he won’t be in the Red Sox rotation at some point this year…and for Lars Anderson. What a joke.

Venezuelan Winter League

•Jesus Aguilar (1B, Leones del Caracas): 1-for-2, 1 RBI: Aguilar followed up his big game on Saturday with a run-scoring single on Sunday. It’s a big year for the big first baseman, so it’s good to see his game picking up steam as the winter league begins its final stretch.

•Ezequiel Carrera (RF, Navegantes del Magallanes): 2-for-3, 2 R, 2 BB: Carrera is just lighting it up in Venezuela right now, hitting .326 overall, and .333 over his last ten games. In 11 games overall, he has seven runs, 15 hits and two doubles, to go along with a homer and four RBI. He’s also stolen five bases.

•Paolo Espino (Caribes de Antzoategui): 4 IP, 5 H, 1 R/ER, 2 BB, 1 K: Espino made his debut in the winter leagues with a fairly regular performance for him at this point. He rarely makes the big mistake, and seems to always pitch well. Is it enough though?

52 NS: Cuba Baseball League Opens with Thriller

by C. Robinson

November 25, 2012

IND 0, CAV 1 (12 Inn)

Vladimir Garcia had a no-hitter going into the ninth inning.

The 2012-2013 Cuban Baseball League season couldn’t have started with a better game on Sunday than the 12-inning win by last year’s champions Ciego de Avila 1-0 over the runners-up Industriales.

With two outs in the bottom of the 12th Yoelvis Fiss laced a hit to left driving home pinch runner Abdel Civil for the walk off run.

Lázaro Santana picked up the win going 2.2 innings in relief allowing two hits and striking out two. The loser, Rancel Sánchez, pitched the last 1.2 innings for Industriales.

Ciego de Avila starter Vladimir Garcia had a no-hitter going until the ninth inning when he surrendered two singles but pitched his way out of a bases loaded one out jam.

For Industriales, Odrisamer Despaigne went 8.1 innings allowing only three hits, two in the bottom of the ninth, before being replaced by Yohandry Portal.

The Ciego de Avila – Industriales inaugural game will be followed by a full schedule of games on Tuesday, November 27.

Watched the last five innings of that game. Not surprising! Despaigne and Garcia are in my top 5 list of best pitchers in Cuba. I would love to have both of them on our staff.

MARGARITA. -

Jhoulys Chacin and Hector Rondon leave this week for the season 2012-2013.

Young pitchers, expressed satisfaction with the season they have had so far in Venezuela and see with regret the closeness of the team in the standings. "It's hard because you're attached to this team, but these things happen. They (the Cleveland Indians) want me to relax and I hope in the future to continue pitching here with the Lions, " said Hector Rondon, who will try to earn a spot on the big club during spring training. "

The Rockies gave me permission to start eight games and thankfully I felt good in them, I've really enjoyed my time here, " said Jhoulys Chacin, who will make his last start, at least at this time, on Friday in Maracaibo.

Rondon has been one of the bastions of the Leones pitching staff, to the point that there was not allowed a run in the last 11 starts before the day on Sunday. "Of course I will keep supporting the team, joining them in Caracas whenever possible: I wish stay a little longer, "said Rondon, who is in his third appearance in the LVBP.

TOROS.

Rookie Jose Ramirez has earned the trust of the leader Eddy Diaz and the second base position with his good play and mastery of the fundamentals. Yesterday was another match more than one hit to go 4-2 today ...

The Toros expect right-hander Kevin Slowey imported with major league experience. Slowey is 28 and is originally from the Minnesota Twins, but now belongs to the Indians ...

New figures improving the level of winter ball

Participating high quality rookies are integrated

Written by: Juan Mercado

Santo Domingo. -

The Dominican fans are enjoying a great baseball tournament to see what is best for the future, as they prepare to see the more established players returning.

In the first stage of the season top prospects from various teams showed off their credentials with great quality.

In that group stood Marcell Ozuna, of the Gigantes del Cibao, Oscar Taveras, of the Cibao Eagles, Jose Ramirez, of the Toros del Este, Enny Romero, the Lions of the Escogido; Miguel Sano, of the Estrellas, and Braulio Lara , of the Licey Tigers.

Ozuna put on a show in the first month of the season by hitting eight homers, still a record for a rookie.

Taveras maintains his average over .300, showing why he is considered one of the best hitters in the future.

The peppery Ramirez, second pick of the Toros in the amateur draft last season, immediately showed his potential that before yesterday was the leader of the tournament batting .333.

The lefty Romero, although his record is 0-1 with a 3.11 ERA, with a fastball constantly above 95 mph, marked his stamp to be considered one of the best in the near future with Tampa Bay .

The super prospect Sano, limited participation, triggered two homers in 24 innings, to leave knowing that his potential is real.

While left-hander Lara, Tampa Bay, stands tall in the Licey bullpen, compiling a 2-0 record and 1.80 ERA.

Looking ahead:

Today the Dominican season enjoys 'Mannymanía' with Manny Ramirez, of the Aguilas.

Last Sunday debuted Wilin Rosario the receiver, coming off a great season in the majors, where he ended up being even a strong candidate to win Rookie of the Year in the National League.

Also Joaquin Arias, who is coming off a World Series title.

The Leones on Sunday received catcher Carlos Santana, of Cleveland, who had just participated in a game in the Dominican League.

Also the 'utility' player Ramon Santiago.

The Cibao Giants announced Major League players Nelson Cruz, Wilson Betemit, Antonio Bastardo and Joel Peralta.

Hanley Ramirez debuted to strengthen Licey who also expects Erick Aybar.

The Toros expects shortstop Eduardo Nunez, Yankees.

The Indians continue to get good showings from their players that are participating in the various winter ball leagues this offseason. Nick Hagadone had a dominating performance last night and Jose Ramirez continues to rack up the hits and get on base. Check out how both of them did as well as a few other players....after the jump.

Dominican Winter League

•Jose Ramirez (2B, Toros del Este): 2-for-4, 2 RBI, BB, CS. Ramirez continues to pile up hits and get on base as he reached base in 3 of his 5 plate appearances on the night. He is now hitting a very good .342 in 22 games this winter and continues to impress not only with his bat-to-ball ability but his plate discipline and on-base skills (14 BB, 9 K).

•Nick Hagadone (RP, Aguilas Cibaenas): 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K. This was Hagadone’s third outing so far in winter ball and he gets better and better with each outing. He did not record an out his first outing and faced two hitters allowing a walk and hit, but in the two outings since he has thrown 3.0 shutout-hitless-walkless innings with 5 strikeouts. Getting him healthy and back in the good graces of the team is big for the Indians bullpen next season as he is an impact backend bullpen arm.

•Carlos Santana (DH, Leones del Escogido): 0-for-4, BB, K. Santana was the DH once again in his second winter league game last night, and is now just 1-for-8 with a walk in his first 2 games. The DHing is probably only temporary as he is getting back into game shape, and probably will play some games at catcher or even first base soon.

•Juan Diaz (SS, Estrellas de Oriente): 3-for-5, R. Diaz is having a solid winter ball showing hitting .286 with an OPS north of .700 in 28 games. An area of concern for him continues to be the lack of plate discipline as he has 4 walks and 15 strikeouts, and this past season had 29 walks and 113 strikeouts.
