Go Figure!

Alfredo Despaigne was the first batter in the home half of Granma's 10th inning. I turn the game off. It's nearly midnight. I just finished securing the library for the night. I have to get to bed. I get up at 3am to take my wife and her sister to the airport (vacationing for a week in Florida). I tune in this morning. Despaigne leads off the inning with a walk-off homer. That's his 41st of the season. This is uncharted territory for the league. Granma lives to play the deciding 7th game tonight in their home stadium. I watch nearly 4 1/2 hours of baseball and miss the one second it took to win it. LOL! Final. Granma 9 Ciego de Avila 8.

Granma is weak on defense, they don't run the bases very well, and their pitching staff is the weakest in the field of four but the lineup 1 through 7 is devastating.

TAMAYO TAMAYO, RAMON YOSVANI 2B
FONSECA ALCEA, MARCOS LUIS SS
DESPAIGNE RGUEZ, ALFREDO LF
SAMON MATAMOROS, YORDANIS 1B
GUERRA VARGAS, URMANIS RF
FERRALES J., LUIS ALBERTO R
SANTOS MARTINEZ, ROEL CF

Tomayo was 1-4 with 1 rbi and 1 run score (one of the best leadoff hitters in the league)
Despaigne was 2-5 with 1 homer (#41), 3 rbi and 1 run scored.
Samon was 4-5 with 1 rbi and 1 run scored.
Guerra was 2-4 with 1 homer, 2 rbi, and 2 runs scored.
Roel Santos was 3-4.

That homer by Despaigne was #41 in his 109th ballgame. It was also his 5th in the tournament (13 games). Despaigne has been incredible this year.

Apologies for a couple of errors posted. Somewhere along the lines, I lost out on a pair of ballgames. To set the record straight, here is how the two best of seven series stand:

Code: Select all

Western Division:
Industriales (IND) 3
Matanzas (MTZ) 2

Eastern Division:
Granma (GRA) 2
Ciego de Ávila (CAV) 3

East Division 2012: Despaigne puts Granma in 6th Game

Eastern Finals: Game 5- Cav 8, Grm 9 (10 Innings)
Image
Player of the game : Despite other contributors, homer # 41 of Alfredo Despaigne defined the season for Granma in game # 5 of the East Division

When all hope seemed a pipe dream, Alfredo Despaigne fulfilled his prediction that in stressful situations he would seek out a way to hit a home run. He dispatched the Mizuno-200 off of Jose Antonio Barroso and Granma left the field in miracle fashion to draw the semifinal series to 3-2 with a 9-8 victory in 10 innings.

Before Despaigne, it was Urmanis Guerra, who with his homer tied the game at eight in the 9th inning.

Matanzas facing elimination at home fell behind in the very first inning on a 2-run blast by Rudi Reyes as he scampered around the bases in quick fashion pumping his fists all the way to home. Not to be outdone, Yasiel Santoya blasted a 3-run homer pumping his fists as he scampered all the way home in the same quick fashion giving Matanzas a 3-2 lead. Yadiel Hernandez went back to back also pumping his fists and scampering around the bases to give Matanzas a 4-2 lead. A full house in Latin American Stadium is rocking and the noise makers are blaring. One of my favorite ballplayers, Guillermo Heredia lead off the Matanzas first with a blast to center was robbed of a homer by a leaping Albero Tabares over the centerfield fence. End of 1, Matanzas 4 Industriales 2.

Industriales tied the game at 4 runs each in the top of the fourth. Some really sloppy base running by Matanzas in the bottom of the third cost them a run or two. And the rest of the story tomorrow.

Matanzas forces a division championship game with an 11-6 victory over the Industriales. The series is now tied at 3 games each.

It's been fun watching Victor Mesa manage. He sprints to the mound and back to the dugout. He'll call timeouts and get in your face on the field for silly mistakes and then once more when you get back to the dugout. He's milking his young team for everything they've got.

Matanzas is the Cinderella team this year and on the verge of knocking out the perennial powerhouse Industriales out of the competition.

Western Division 2012: Matanzas ... well worth a championship

Western Division 2012: Game 6- Ind 6, 11 Mtz
Image
Player of the game : First baseman Yasiel Santoya has been instrumental in the triumphs of Matanzas in the Games # 2 and #6 of the Western Division Championships. Yasiel drove in four runs and his first inning three run homer put Matanzas back in the playoff picture.

The Crocodiles, the boys of Victor Mesa, or the best team in the Cuban season 2011-2012, whatever you want to call it, has drawn strength from which many thought was no longer present, on Wednesday tied the series of the Western Division Postseason 2012 at three games apiece, with their 11-6 victory in their home stadium at Victoria de Giron Stadium against the Industriales thus sending the best of seven series to a 7th game this Thursday at 8:30 pm.

Neither left-hander Ian Rendon for the Industriales nor fellow southpaw Yoanni Year for Matanzas, could pass the very first inning.

Irait Chirino opened the game with a single to center and after forcing out of Torriente Chirino at second, Rudy Reyes homered to put the match quickly 2-0. Another single by Serguei Perez, with two outs, Victor Mesa did not wait any longer - as usual - and brought the righty Maikel Martínez who managed to calm the waters despite a walk given to Yasmani Thomas.

But Matanzas had been willing to leave everything on the ground and did not shrink before the opponent's advantage, scoring a cluster of four runs at the bottom of that initial inning. With one out Ariel Sanchez and Manuel Benavidez - born in La Maya, Santiago de Cuba on November 2, 1964 and at the ripe old age of 47 received walks, leaving the scene ready for Santoya Yasiel's 3-run homer in front of an overflowing crowd at the stadium. It was madness in the stands to see the change of the face of the encounter with a 3-2 in favor of the Crocodiles. Matanzas was in the fight but would extend it's lead against Rondon with another homer by Hernandez Yadiel to left, which gave a 4-2 lead to the Crocodiles. Manager Vargas could not take more and this time looked not as calm as before, removing Rendon and replacing him with another lefty, Pavel Pino, in a decision that did not ring happy with the Industriales.

But both relievers seemed to calm the storms offensive for two innings, three for Martinez. In the 4th the Blue's response would come to Maikel Martínez. Yasmani Thomas led off with a single to left, Tabares did the same to the right and both men were anchored at third and second, respectively, by the well-executed sacrifice by catcher Frank Camilo Morejon. Raiko Olivares produced the third single to right by sending Thomas to the plate and Tabares moving to third. Victor Mesa was disturbed and made way for Maikel Delvis Borges - Borges was a man who threw only 11.1 innings in all 51 National Series PCL exhibiting 11.12 ERA - but nevertheless pulled out an important at bat against Irait Chirino. His ground out equalized the score at 4. Borges then retired Joel Suarez to take in the reins of shock for the good of his team.
Image
Two stars of the triumph for Matanzas in the 6th game of the Western Division. From left to right off reliever Joel Suarez, with his second win in the Western Finals, and embraced by Victor Hernandez Yadiel after his second homer of the game in the 6th inning

The tie went to the bottom of the 5th inning when the Matanzas exploded offensively to stop once and for all the game. With one out, Guillermo Heredia singled to right. With Manuel Benavidez at the plate, some believers thought the inning was over, but again they were wrong, Benavidez doubled to left that brought Heredia to the plate. That put Matanzas ahead again and forever in the game.

Matanzas Yadiel blasted his second homer of the game - which would put the game at 8-4.

Industriales tried to rally in the sixth when Tabares - that veteran - doubled, moved to third on a single by new receiver Lisbán Correa. Tabares scored on a sacrifice fly by Irait Chirino.

But with the score 8-5, Matanzas wanted to silence once and for all the roar of the Lion and in the process and scored another cluster of 3 runs in the sixth.

In that inning Joseph M. Fernandez reached on single to center - the righty Novato Churches replaced Ernesto Mena - Medina struck out before the new pitcher, but Heredia negotiated a walk and Ariel Sanchez homered to left pushing the score to 11-5. The Industriales would add another run but would not be enough. Final Matanzas 11 Industriales 6.

2012 Western Finals: Industriales vs. Matanzas, Game 7 Today

Player of the Game: First baseman Yasiel Santoya was a key player for Matanzas in Games #2 and #6 of the Western Finals. Last night Santoya helped the Crocodiles with a three-run homer in the first inning and a total of 4 RBIs in the game

Victor Mesa’s Matanzas miracle workers have been the talk of the town all season and are now one win away from making it to the Cuban Baseball Playoff finals. In its path is Industriales, the darling of the Cuban capital.

Yesterday’s 11-6 win over Industriales was big and with ace starter Jorge Martinez on the mound this afternoon, the odds now favor Matanzas.

The host team managed a four run rally in the fifth inning on Wednesday that busted open a 4-4 tie and with three more in the sixth Industriales was at a big disadvantage, although they did manage one of their own in the sixth and the ninth.

Both starting pitchers (lefthanders) wished they never threw a ball, with neither Industriales’ Ian Rendon nor Matanzas’ Yoanni Year making it through the first inning.

Rendon got the hook after allowing four runs on two hits (both home runs) and two walks in the bottom of the first, including a three run homer by Yasiel Santoya and a solo shot by Yadiel Hernandez.

Starting out like they wanted to end the series, Industriales had scored two runs in the top of the first off Year on a two-run homer by Rudy Reyes. After a two-out hit by Serguei Perez, Victor Mesa didn’t hesitate to remove Year.

In all, Industriales used five pitchers and Matanzas a whopping nine, including four in the ninth inning to put out a last minute Lion’s fire.

The winning pitcher was the fourth Matanzas hurler, Joel Suarez, who went four innings allowing one run on four hits and two walks.

The loser was reliever Pavel Pino who gave up two runs in 4.1 innings.

Game seven of the Occidental (Western) League takes place in Matanzas at 5:00 pm. Cuban time.

Matanzas has their star right-hander Jorge A. Martinez ready to start while Industriales will put its fate in the hands of righty Darwin Beltran.

Game six in the Oriental (Eastern) League has Ciego de Avila hosting Granma at 8:30 p.m. Ciego is up 3-2 in their best-of-seven series.

Ciego de Avila are the Eastern Division Champions.

The Industriales are the Western Division Champions.

They move on to the League Championship Series.

In my opinion, the two best teams in both divisions will move on.

Granma is a young team weak on defense, baserunning, and pitching but as strong on offense as any team in the league.

The Matanzas are strong in all areas of the game, but, they are very young and inexperienced. They will be the team to beat next season.

Ciego de Avila is well balanced throughout, offensively, defensively, pitching, and a nice mix of the young with the old.

The Industriales have always been strong. They are Havana's team.
