Coming back from Tommy John surgery that kept him out of action for the entire 2010 season, Minnesota Twins closer Joe Nathan hasn't yet rediscovered the form that made him a four-time All-Star.

Nathan gave up a game-tying home run in the ninth inning Saturday night to Tampa Bay's Ben Zobrist, then proceeded to walk the next two batters before being taken out of the game, one the Twins would lose 4-3 on Johnny Damon's two-out single.

After the game, Nathan met with manager Ron Gardenhire and pitching coach Rick Anderson and asked to be taken out of the closer's role he's held since the Twins acquired him from the San Francisco Giants in 2004.

""I don't want to put this team at any risk, or cost them any ballgames right now," Nathan told mlb.com. "I just thought it was the right thing to do for this ballclub, and for myself."

Nathan began the season with three straight saves, but has given up ninth-inning leads in his last two appearances against the Rays. In 5 1/3 innings this season, Nathan's ERA sits at 8.44.

I guess the one you heard is the monotone "wah....wah....wah?" I hate that one myself. Fortunately he's not there all the time.

Sometimes guys over the left field wall first row do pretty well with real brass the stadium permits.

8:05AM first pitch for me.

Tomorrow is also the 105th anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

'Twas the 18th of April of '75......

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Mike Leake was booked into the Hamilton County Justice Center today, accused of theft.

Leake was booked into the jail at 2:32 p.m. by Cincinnati police.

Leake, of Ludlow, was arrested after Macy's department store loss prevention employees stopped the Reds pitcher today after they say he took $59.88 in property from the store.

Leake is accused of stealing six American Rag T-shirts from the store, removing the security tags and leaving the store without paying for them.

Police said the incident was caught on security cameras at the Downtown Macy's.

The theft is listed as a misdemeanor. Cincinnati police didn't immediately respond to e-mails asking for more information about Leake's arrest.

The theft charge carries a maximum jail term of 180 days.

According to records, Leake's salary is $425,000 for 2011.

The Reds have no comment at this time.

Leake, 23, was the Reds’ first-round draft pick in 2009, the eighth selection overall. He made his debut with the Reds last season, becoming just the 21st player since the draft was instituted in 1965 to make the majors without playing a single game in the minor leagues.

Leake went 8-4 with a 4.23 ERA last season. He’s 2-0 with a 5.40 ERA in three starts this season.

Mauer is out again.

Twins would be wise to find him another position.

Is Joe signed up over here?

SEATTLE (AP)

Mariners center fielder Franklin Gutierrez is back from a visit to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota where doctors have diagnosed irritable bowel syndrome as the cause of his stomach problems that have affected him for nearly a year.

Gutierrez was back in Seattle's clubhouse before Saturday's game against Oakland. The Gold Glove winner says he's relieved to finally have a diagnosis and his stomach problems will soon go away.

Gutierrez was placed on the 15-day disabled list on March 30 with stomach gastritis. He was scheduled to begin a rehab assignment at Single-A High Desert on April 17, but was a late scratch after his stomach problems flared. He returned to Seattle and was later sent to the Mayo Clinic for more tests.

He has the link, and I know he lurks here sometimes. But he said on the old forum that he felt several posters didn't like his contributions, so wasn't planning on joining here. Hope he changes his mind.
