I make bean soup quite a bit. You probably know that first step in the recipe about bringing the beans to a boil for a couple minutes and then letting sit for an hour is not necessary. The alternative is to soak the beans in the refrigerator for several hours. There are theories though that the boiling "quick soak method in the recipe helps to make the beans easier to digest.

Many weekends, especially in the fall and winter, I'll just grab a bag of white beans for probably less than a dollar, do the quick soak, and then bring to a boil and simmer with a slice or two of bacon and just some salt and pepper. When done I like to finely chop a sweet onion and sprinkle in some bits raw before I eat. Great comfort food with multiple generous servings for usually less than $2.50 total.

I usually also make a corn bread recipe that if you prorate the ingredients used turns out to be about $1.25 for an 8x8 cornbread (I use the same cornbread recipe for the soup that I use for Thanksgiving dressing).

It's all healthy, tasty, filling and cheap.

My wife isn't a big fan of my "white bean" soup, but she does like my split pea soup and those Navy beans you tried. Thanks for experimenting!

I spent part of the afternoon visiting local animal shelters, seeking a new dog.

I put down a deposit on this girl, a little older and bigger than I might have considered before interacting with her. She is a sweetie, but has a lump on one of her back legs that the shelter people say is a bone callus, the result of her breaking her leg at a earlier time( she grew up on a Indian reservation) and it not being set, healing crooked. The lump is about golf ball sized and feels like bone. It is not sensitive to touch with a good squeeze and she doesn't favor it when walking. I just want to have my vet give me an opinion. I don't have the mental umph to tackle any serious health issues with a dog right out of the gate. Shelter vet has checked her out as okay, but they can't afford to give her an x-ray since she displays no symptoms from the lump.

I have until next Saturday to make up my mind about the adoption. It gives me the chance to make sure shes' fine, I am fine with a new bud and I can eliminate easily snuck foodstuffs from a young, curious, in training dog.

Photos of her are a couple of posts past this one.

I also discovered that you can heat up a small amount of water to a boil in a pan with a steamer basket, turn off the heat when water is steaming, put on the verge of stale bread in the pan with lid on for a little while( less than a minute) and the bread comes out warm and spongy fresh tasting and consistency. I have only done this with bread I sliced down to sandwich width pieces. The trick is to not allow the bread to actually get wet. Not brain surgery.

JC, hopefully the internet waves will all wash out correctly.

I am so proud of this girl. I'm not her biological Dad, but I've have had her with her mother since she was 10.

I teared up at the college graduation ceremonies of my first two daughters. Both graduated Clemson University.

I know I'll tear up next Saturday. If anyone gives me any grief, I know I can and will kick arse.

Also- An old black and white film with many SF locales is 'Experiment in Terror', starring Glenn Ford, Ross Martin and Lee Remick.

Remick is always easy to look at.

My wife loves "Monk"

When it was airing, they shot two days a year in The Bay Area to get the requisite shots for the season as the rest was filmed in SoCal.

I love and enjoy a bunch of stuff, but I especially enjoy Cleveland Sports.
