wild pitch scores a run. then Devers walks. I'm guessing this pitcher is not on a path to the big leagues [another 25 year old still in A ball; kid is 6-8 and he records a lot of strike outs and until today only 6 walks in 24 innings;]

He just walked Burgos to load the bases. I guess the Captains hitters intimidate him.

REHAB

Steven Kwan (Columbus, starting LF): 0-3 - Kwan went hitless, including a pair of flyouts to nearly the exact same spot on the right center field warning track, and seemed a little slow in his six innings in the field in the first Triple-A game of his rehab assignment. While the results may not have been there, you could definitely see the process in action.

Angel Martinez (ACL, DH): 0-2, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 K - While Martinez remains hitless in seven at-bats in three rehab games, he did reach safely for the first time in his stint, walking twice and scoring each time - including the eventual game-winning run.

HIGHLIGHTS

Jhonkensy Noel (Columbus, 1B): 3-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI - Noel's incredible month of May rolled on last night with his team-leading 13th home run of the season highlighting a big night at the plate that brought his May OPS to .969.

Ross Carver (Akron, RP): 2.1 IP, 1 BB, 2 K - Carver rebounded from allowing two earned runs in as many frames last Wednesday with this nearly perfect relief effort - continuing a feast-or-famine season which has seen Ross allow zero or multiple runs in all but one of his outings.

Jose Devers (Lake County, SS): 3-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI - Devers was the offensive star of the evening in Cedar Rapids with his second outing of 3 or more hit and RBI in the last week (2 H - 2 of them HR - and 4 RBI last wednesday vs. West Michigan). The key now is more consistency between the big nights.

Jorge Burgos (Lake County, RF): 2-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 Outfield Assist - After going 2-for-7 in last week’s homestand, Burgos knocked - nay, blasted - off any rust that may have remained from his IL stint as her played a team other than the Whitecaps since April 21 (he got injured in a game in suburban Grand Rapids).

Jake Fox (Lake County, CF): 1-4, 2 RBI, 1 SF, 1 K - Fox extended his hitting and on-base streaks to eight and twelve games, respectively, as part of the triumvirate of multi-RBI Captains in last night’s series opener.

Cooper Ingle (Lake County, C): 2-3, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 2 BB - Ingle is slashing .340/.426/.510 for the season and .344/.459/.475 in May after driving in the other Lake County run in the seventh multi-base game of his active eight-game hitting streak.

C.J. Kayfus (Lake County, 1B): 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 SB - C.J. Kayfus continues to C.. Kayfus. His seventh multi-base game in his last nine brought his season slash line to .343/.440/.600! Yes, that’s a tax form OPS (1.040) with June in sight and no IL stint to shrink the sample size. C.J. should be seeing the Corner of State and Main sometime this season, maybe as early as the start of the Second Half.

Trenton Denholm (Lake County, SP): W (5-1), 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R (earned), 1 BB, 1 HBP, 4 K, 1 E - While he didn’t match his 8.1-inning longevity from last Wednesday, Denholm was dominant in the frame he did hurl on Tuesday night.

Jose Pastrano (Lynchburg, 3B): 3-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 E - Pastrano’s seven-base Tuesday nearly doubled his season total base total (ten entering last night) and outpaced his entire month of April (six).

Ralphy Velazquez (Lynchburg, 1B): 2-5, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 E - Velazquez, on the other hand, is no stranger to raking, as evidenced by his .282/.388/.490 slash line and thirty RBI.

Angel Genao (Lynchburg, SS): 1-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB (intentional), 1 K, 1 SB - Genao’s pair of RBI brought his team-leading total to 37, g0od for third in the Carolina League.

3B Yaikel Mijares (ACL Guardians): 1-for-4, RBI - The 18-year-old drove in one of the team’s two runs with a single in the sixth. It came with the bases loaded following a trifecta of walks. He has now reached base safely in 11 straight contests.

SS Welbyn Francisca (ACL Guardians): 1-for-3, BB, E6F - Francisca reached base twice with a hit and a walk. He had one of just two hits for the team in the game. He is off to a solid start to his Arizona career with slash lines of .263/.378/.395 entering Monday.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

Micah Pries (Columbus, DH): 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI - Pries’ second straight two-hit game including the Clip Show’s other round-tripper of the evening.

George Valera (Columbus, RF): 3-4 - Valera got back over the Mendoza Line (now hitting .203) with a three-hit Tuesday.

Jose Tena (Columbus, SS): 2-4, 1 2B, 1 BB - Tena now had a nine-game on-base streak and six-game hit streak after reaching thrice to start the series,

Chase DeLauter (Akron, starting RF): 0-1, 1 BB - DeLauter played four innings in the field in his return from the 7-day IL, but did not see the basepaths as he was replaced by pinch runner (and later backup RF) Alexfri Planez following his walk.

Christian Cairo (Akron, LF): 1-5, 2 RBI, 2 K - Cairo’s eighth-inning single drove in both RubberDuck runs and ultimately sent the content to a tenth inning,

Dayan Frias (Akron, 3B): 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB - Frias now had a productive plate appearance in twelve straight games after extending his hitting streak to eight games with his seventh straight one-hit game. (All streaks exclude May 18 vs. Altoona, which Dayan only participated in defensively.)

Doug Nikhazy (Akron, SP): ND, 4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R (both earned), 6 K, 2 HR allowed - Even after allowing his second and third homers of the season, Nikhazy’s ERA is still only 1.65 (5 ER in 27.1 IP).

Alex Mooney (Lake County, 3B): 2-5, 1 R, 1 CS - Mooney hasn’t gone more than four games this season without a multi-hit performance. Last night’s pair of hits prevented a third such four-game multi-hit drought.

Guy Lipscomb (Lake County, DH): 0-2, 3 BB, 1 SB - A rare hitless effort from Lipscomb, largely because he wasn’t given anything to hit.

Nate Furman (Lake County, 2B): 0-4, 2 BB, 2 K - Despite going hitless in back-to-back games for the first time this season, Furman’s mimi-slump has been mitigated by a trio of walks that have extended hiss on-base streak to 13 contests.

Jaison Chourio (Lynchburg, CF): 1-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 2 SB - Chourio is now tied for seventh in steals in the CL with 16 after nabbing a pair last night.

Luis Durango (Lynchburg, starting LF): 1-2, 1 HBP - Durango hit the ground running in his return from the IL.

Yaikel Mijares (ACL, SS): 2-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 2 K, Picked Off 1 time - Mijares’ second stateside two-RBI game was the A-Guards’ offensive highlight of a crazy evening in Goodyear.

Jose Pirela (ACL, CF): 0-1, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SF, 1 K, 1 CS, 1 E - Of all these numbers, the sac fly is the most important as it drove in Martinez for the winning run.

Welbyn Francisca (ACL, 2B): 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB - Francisca, who has played in 13 games so far this season, has an eleven-game on-base streak and a productive plate appearance in 12 straight. Not a bad way to start one;s stateside career.

Kendeglys Virguez (ACL, RP): W (1-2), 3 IP, 1 HBP, 6 K - A prompt pickoff following a leadoff HBP in the ninth meant that Virguez faced the minimum in a dominant outing that earned him his first individual victory of the 2024 campaign.

This game was actually close until the Columbus bullpen got absolutely freaking blasted for seven runs in the ninth inning. Peter Strzelecki and John Doxakis were the culprits, allowing seven runs on seven hits with a walk in the final frame.

Starting pitcher Conner Gillispie was fine, allowing two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and four walks in 4 2⁄3 innings.

Everyone out of the bullpen struggled, with both Nick Mikolajchak and Eric Sabrowski also giving up at least one run in their respective 1 1⁄3 inning appearances.

Thankfully, Andrew Walters is on the way to offer some assistance in the back end of the ‘pen.

On the offensive side of the equation, Jose Tena stayed red hot, going 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.

RubberDucks fall to 27-19


The good news ... Chase DeLauter was activated!

The bad news, Akron’s offensive woes continued as the RubberDucks managed just two hits (and five walks).

Dayan Frias went 1-for-3 with a walk and Christian Cairo had a two-run single to account for pretty much all of Akron’s offense.

If only the level directly below Akron had any hitters worth promoting right now?

Akron got some great pitching, beginning with Doug Nikhazy, who struck out six, walked none and allowed two runs on four hits in 4 2⁄3 innings. Ross Carver and Jack Leftwich combined for 4 1⁄3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Lenny Torres picked a bad time to allow his first earned run of the year, dealing with control issues in the 10th inning where he allowed two runs (one earned) without giving up a hit. This happened because of three walks and a whopping three wild pitches (plus the ghost runner). He also struck out the side.

“Rake” County did what Rake County does, with five players in the middle of the lineup having multi-hit games.

Jose Devers popped off, going 3-for-5 with a home run and a double. Jorge Burgos also homered, going 2-for-5.

C.J. Kayfus went 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and a walk. Guy Lipscomb didn’t have a hit, but he walked three times and stole a base.

Starting pitcher Trenton Denholm was outstanding, allowing one run on four hits in 5 2⁄3 innings with four strikeouts and a walk.

Adam Tulloch and Alan Hernandez closed out the victory with a scoreless inning apiece.

Hillcats improve to 25-21


Jose Pastrano played hero in this one. He went 3-for-5 with a double and a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Several other players had standout games, including Ralphy Velazquez, who went 2-for-5 with two doubles on his 19th birthday.

Angel Genao doubled and walked with a stolen base while Jaison Chourio went 1-for-4 with a walk and two stolen bases. Robert Lopez went 2-for-5.

Starting pitcher Jackson Humphries pitched into and out of danger, allowing one run (zero earned) on three hits and three walks in 2 2⁄3 innings with 61 pitches. He also struck out four.

Reny Artiles added 2 2⁄3 scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts, the most effective outing of any Hillcats pitcher.


ACL Guardians 6, ACL Reds 5
Guardians improve to 6-11


Yaikel Mijares led the way, going 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs batted in. Luis Merejo had the other extra-base hit, going 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.

Other offensive standouts included Welbyn Francisca and Jeffrey Mercedes, who both went 1-for-3 with a walk. Jose Pirela added a pair of walks.

Starting pitcher Jervis Alfaro had six strikeouts and no walks in three innings, but he also was hit hard, allowing three runs on six hits.

Deretd Parra struck out five in 2 1⁄3 innings, allowing one run. The MVP of the pitching staff was Kendeglys Virguez, a 20-year-old Venezuelan pitcher who tossed three scoreless innings while striking out six, walking none and also not allowing a hit.

All in all, ACL Guardians pitchers whiffed a whopping 19 batters out of 27 outs recorded.
