civ - remember he didn't even play at first for the Braves since he was still recovering. So I wouldn't expect him to tear it up after all that time off.

The guy can hit, his career says it, apparently it was "meant to be" that he go to the Braves and be a postseason hero.

by the end of this week the team will finally have eliminated the chaff from the roster.
probably working to re-sign some of the said chaff to minor league contracts. I assume Bradley Zimmer will look for another club. Kyle Nelson and Soctt Moss might take the deals with spring training invites.
Ernie Clement is a curious case; he certainly has far lower ceiling than Giminez and Change and Arias and Rocchio and Tena and more. But he also can fit a utility role very successfully. Keep him on the roster? Sign him to a minor league deal?

civ - first of all I got the impression that the team really likes Clement because his glove is so good at multiple positions. Then he actually got some hits too.

So yes I do agree/think they really like him as a utility type who can play middle infield - and well.

First moves:

11/03/21 C Wilson Ramos elected free agency.
11/03/21 RHP Bryan Shaw elected free agency.
11/03/21 RHP Blake Parker elected free agency.

That leaves the 40 man roster with 40 men: 22 pitchers; 2 catchers; 9 infielders; 7 outfielders.
Since they won't pick up Perez' option they are effectively at 39.
They are pretty sure to non-tender Wittgren, making 38
They are pretty sure to release pitchers Hill, Nelson and Young and I'd assume Moss making 34.
I guess they'd drop Johnson and Zimmer making 32.

They will add most if not all of:
C -1B-LF Lavastida
1B-3B Noel
2b-UT Palacios
2b-SS Freeman
SS Rocchio
SS Tena
OF Kwan
OF Gonzalez
OF Valera
RHP Morris

Given the choice I'd add all of them and sacrifice Harold Ramirez, Carlos Vargas and probably Justin Garza; and maybe dump Oscar Mercado for good measure. Some of them can be resigned to Minor League contracts

Looking for bullpen depth, the Indians could deal for a former low-grade prospect who had a surprising year for Baltimore.

Do you see the Orioles shopping Sulser this winter?
-- @Corayray1, via Twitter

I think there is a good chance. Quietly, Cole Sulser enjoyed a breakout year amid the Orioles’ volatile ‘pen, pitching to a 2.70 ERA, 2.98 FIP and 28% strikeout rate at age 31. The right-hander also saved eight games while putting up reverse splits, showing an ability to get left-handed hitters out with regularity due to his effective changeup. In short, he was a weapon -- one of the few Brandon Hyde had at his disposal on a consistent basis in 2021.

[25th round pick out of Dartmouth, included in the Yandy Diaz to Tampa deal. Rays released him. O's got lucky.
