Godley seems to be on a steady upward trajectory

2017 ERA 3.34
2018 ERA 4.74
2019 ERA 5.97
2020 ERA 8.16
2021 ERA 16.20

Glad to have him. He could be an improvement for Columbus for some of their recent pickups but I think the Indians don't need him

But this is the Cleveland Indians and indeed we might be able to fix him.

It's actually quite common for a veteran pitcher to make a change or two to what he is doing and make a turn for the better.

These are zero cost acquisitions. For all we know they looked at video and a pitching guy saw something.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Indians outfielder Josh Naylor will have surgery Friday at Cleveland Clinic to address multiple fibula fractures and torn ligaments in his right ankle after suffering a gruesome injury Sunday in a collision with teammate Ernie Clement in Minnesota.

Naylor was evaluated by foot and ankle specialist Dr. Mark Berkowitz on Tuesday who confirmed the initial diagnosis and recommended surgery. A more definitive timeframe for a return to play will be determined following surgery, the club said.

Indians signed C Wilson Ramos to a minor league contract.

This was first reported by Daniel Álvarez Montes of ElExtraBase. Ramos was released by the Tigers on June 22, and he'll stay in the division. The backstop was struggling with the bat with a .200/.238/.392 slash over 128 plate appearances, and also dealt with a lumbar spine strain

For those unfamiliar with Ramos, he is a very UN Tribe like catcher. Hit first guy with fielding a clear 2nd place.

Here is a link to his career.

https://www.mlb.com/player/wilson-ramos-467092

As you can see, as recently as 2019 he hit .288 with 14 homers and 73 RBI. And I personally don't count 2019 for basically anyone.

This year obviously he is injured. So far.

Worthwhile gamble here.

The demise of our best in show starting pitching is half due to injuries and half due to trades [although nearly all the traded are now injured except for Bauer who is mentally disabled]. So it's sort of bad luck although the failure to have much depth in the top minor levels of the minors is notexcusable.

As things stand now, the rotation is of average AAA quality. 3 of the 5 with ERAs of over 8. The other two over 6 as starters.
It's embarassing.
If the front office wants to win this year [they don't have to; I'd allow a pass on the way to rebuilding] they need to pick up some bad major league arms [which would be a major step up from bad minor leaguers].

Other than McKenzie who is still re-learning how to pitch and not making any progress, there's no one left in AAA who could help. McCarty is one of those unprized short lefties who has OK Columbus success. Scott Moss is good enough to have been put on the 40 man roster but has been hurt and ineffective in less than 15 innings.

No super prospects excelling in Akron and ready to race to the majors as did Bieber and Civale and Plesac. In fact the best AA arms are Mejia and Hentges.
Excelling in Lynchburg in his first season as a pro is the Other Logan Allen who could leapfrog his namesake but his next stop is in Akron not Cleveland

And now it looks like Rosario will head to the IL. I guess at least it's good timing with the all star break coming up.

The only outfielder left in Columbus is Johnson who isn't doing much. Other option of course is Amed to the OF and Andres up to play SS

Or actually letting Franmil run around and pick up non routine fly balls out there.

If Giminez is ready I'd think it ideal to let Amed Rosario (now that he is more comfortable on his new team) move around in a somewhat utility role.

Really he'd be an ideal candidate for that kind of role.

updates posted in Articles include Plesac to return July 8 for an "abbreviated start" of 65 pitches. That's about as much as any starter has worked in the past couple weeks. Then after workout during the All Star break he'll be back on July 18 for 85 pitches

Not that it really matters which of the miserable starters he replaces, I note that the 8th would be Morgan's turn. If I had to pick only one guy to dump I'd go with Allen I guess, but it is pretty tough to choose

Actually for me it isn't even close - Logan Allen for sure.

I'll never figure out how he managed to look decent during spring training!

I think Hentges has much higher ceiling so I could ship him out first to work on harnessing his talent. I could say the same the same for Mejia. Logan Allen will soon become the lesser of our two Logan Allens --- remember he actually pitched two very satisfactory starts to begin the regular season, too, somehow.

No game tonight, hurricane.
2 tomorrow so we get to cut our pitching load by 4 innings which is a good thing. In fact if we played 81 doubleheaders we'd save the equivalent of 36 games over the course of a season and could perhaps an extra position player. But I guess that would work only if the relievers were not need to enter in the 3rd or 4th inning every game.

. [ Mejia and Hentges start tomorrow; everyone else gets in sometime]
