I know San Diego has or had an exceptionally deep and strong farm system so they not miss any of the guys they traded us and some of our return for Bauer came from Cincinnati but the Bauer and Clevinger deals look like this for SD and CLE

SD got Mike Clevinger, about 10 innings last year, on the IL all this year, and signed for 2022.
SD got Tyler Trammell who they traded soon after with 3 other players to SEA for two relievers, neither who's doing much, and a catcher [Nola] who appears to have been the key acquisition and is 2-10 this year.

CLE got Y. Puig for the rest of 2019 [from CIN]
CLE got our best power hitter F. Reyes DH
CLE got our everyday RF/1B Josh Naylor, pretty good now, projects to perhaps be better beyond his current performance at age 23
CLE got Austin Hedges backup catcher, doesn't hit but handles the position very well
CLE got Logan Allen LHP, first LH starter to win a game for CLE in half a dozen years; since then imploded, has some promise
CLE got Scott Moss LHP, AAA starter some chance to be a big leaguer [from CIN]
CLE got Gabriel Arias SS very good defender, not a bad hitter, in AAA at young age, marginally a top 100 prospect
CLE got Owen Miller IF, very good hitter, defensive position uncertain, NOT the franchise savior as some fans anticipate but could turn out to be the equivalent of the Joey Wendle we let get away
CLE got Joey Cantillo another LHP, good not great prospect, in AA rotation
CLE got Victor Nova UT in Low A, who knows?

Maybe the Padres had no room or no use for Reyes, Naylor, Hedges, Allen, Arias, Miller, Cantillo and Nova. But hard to see them winning these deals And COULD turn out to be massive for the Spiders of the 2020's.

Looking back just a little farther,
we also got 2 1/3 seasons of CLOSER BRAD HAND and competent reliever Adam Cimber for very promising C Franciso Mejia who's doing pretty well for Miami. He did little for SD but with 3 other players got them Blake Snell who should fill in nicely for Clevinger.

Again, our front office is amazing at those kinds of deals.

I won't at all be surprised if the 2 minor leaguers from the Mets for Lindor start to turn heads.

Woff in Lynchburg, hasn't pitched yet; he's rated No. 10 on one of our Top prospect lists. The OF is hanging out in Arizona; without a short season not sure where he goes. I think there is an Arizona league in a couple months.

Roberto out 6-8 weeks.

What would it take to get Trey Mancini from Baltimore?

buck84 - this team, as a general rule, doesn't trade much for major leaguers - except at the trade deadline.

The Orioles are still sucking and building but Mancini is young. He stays there.

By the way the Orioles still totally sucking year after year again points to the excellence of the Indians' front office and Tito as well.

Sucking is not for them. They are too good for that.

To go even deeper into that - Shapiro and Atkins have brought that to Toronto as they have built with a strong base of good young players. Ironically it's hitters over there - not pitchers like the Indians.

TFIR, You are probably correct. Pluto also quotes Antinetti as saying they want to develop and contend this year. Pluto thinks they will try a number of players this year. Maybe you try Miller at 1st base.

What I was thinking was that with all the minor leaguers, the Indians will have to use some in a trade or lose some in Rule 5. I was thinking that Mancini only has a year left of control after this year. Whether the Orioles see Santander as a long-term piece is another intriguing element, as a case could be made that the O’s should try to sell high on Santander now (or perhaps before the 2021 trade deadline) if they don’t think he’ll still be a prime contributor by the time Baltimore is ready to contend. Given that the Orioles still have a long ways to go in their rebuild, they might not be ready to compete by 2024, Santander’s age-29 season and his last under team control.

The Orioles’ financial situation adds another wrinkle, as The Athletic’s Dan Connelly reports that the team offered salary deferrals to Santander and Trey Mancini when talking to both players about their 2021 contracts. Both turned down the offers, which would have seen around 25% of their salary pushed ahead to 2022 or 2023. Mancini ended up avoiding arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $4.75MM deal.

In our first foray to play a team in a western division, we're looking likely to go 0-3. Our only experience vs the east we went 1-3.
Obviously Bieber was a very fine pitcher last year but he won his Cy based only on games vs AL and NL Central. He fell apart in the playoffs.
This year he's not as sharp in general but especially outside of the division.

Whatever individual successes anyone on the team had last year should similarly be discounted for missing 2/3 of the league and many of the better teams.

Unfortunately his best are probably 2nd and 3rd which are pretty well occupied] He has only 1 game at 1st which is currently vacant in Cleveland. He's been playing more SS recently where we have a couple guys who are probably better defensively
But when a guy can hit and the rest of the team can't anything other than sitting Jose Ramirez makes sense.

If not they can call the Phils and ask them how they do it with Nick Maton. Or even better call Joe Maddon - he does this for a living.

Ben Zobrist back with the Cubs and now Scott Fletcher with the Angels.

They fill in almost every day for someone, giving them a day off. They don't have to be every bit as good defensively as all of them. And Amed at SS won't exactly be challenging for a gold glove yet they use him there.

So really I am not buying the "no position" line. Puhlease, they put Amed in CF didn't they?
