few weeks ago minor league outfielder Bo Greenwell tore the ACL in his knee. He was in Arizona participating in the fall Instructional League and injured it in the first week of games. He had surgery this week to reconstruct the ACL and will spend the rest of the offseason rehabbing.


[Bo missed much of last season with an injury, don't recall what. He had been making some modest progress but he's probably done now. He hadn't developed much power for a corner OF, and most likely a LF. ]

Arizona Fall League
•Jesus Aguilar (1B): 1-for-4, R, 3 K. Aguilar is still hitting .354/.466/.667 in 12 games but he has cooled some after a hot start going 6-for-21 with 7 strikeouts in his last 5 games.
•T.J. McFarland (SP): 3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. Another very good outing for McFarland who has now made four starts in the AFL and is 2-0 with a 1.46 ERA.
•Cory Burns (RP): 1.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R/ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 0 HR. Burns was a strike throwing machine throwing 15 of his 19 pitches for strikes, but he was in the zone too much as he got hammered for 3 runs on 5 hits. In his last two outings he has allowed 6 runs on 9 hits in 2.0 innings.
Venezuelan Winter League
•Rob Bryson (RP, Bravos de Margarita): 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. Bryson with a perfect outing with 6 batters up and 6 batters down. His first appearance in over a week as he last appeared in a game on October 14th.

Aguillar 1-4 yesterday. 346 still looks super but he's had few xb hits since the first week or two and everyone hits like crazy in this league. But considering that he has only a month or so above the Midwest League he's done well.

Tiny sample size so numbers prove nothing, but nice to see 2 homers from Dorssys Paulino this year's top Latin signee and by Robel Garcia my breakout player of 2012.

levon Washington's Instructional League was not unfortunatley a turnaround from his first full season, 5-30 with 12 strikeouts and no xb hits. He is preparing to be the Micah Schilling of the new decade.

jake Lowery who is a good breakout choice too hit like he did in his debut season, 9-29 3 xb hits, 8 walks.

Stats for the Parallel League for slighty more advanced players in the Instructional League.

Alexander Perez and Hector Rondon who missed the entire season got in a little work. Kyle Bellows who has never hit but fields a fine 3rd base was older than most guys among this group and finally hit well. Carlos Moncrief, a personal favorite, put up some good numbers. Jake Lowery was no worse here than in the regular IL and Alex Lavisky was just as bad.

Top performers include Kyle Bellows, Alex Monsalve, Ronnie Rodriguez, Carlos Moncrief, Jake Lowery. Rodriguez and his non-twin brother Luigi are going to be high ranked on this winter's Top 20s. BA's attempt at an Indians top 10 a couple months back listed both in their top half dozen.

Stephanie Storm's column for BA. To date, however, BA insiders have not expressed much interest in Aguillar "power or nothing and can't field" they reported last month.

CLEVELAND—After the season he had in 2011 and his start to the Arizona Fall League, more and more Indians fans are going to become acquainted with first baseman Jesus Aguilar.

"Aguilar had an impressive year, performing extremely well for his age in both leagues and showing legitimate plus power to all fields," assistant farm director Carter Hawkins said. "He was able to become more consistent at-bat to at-bat this year, and that allowed him to tap into his raw ability more effectively."

The 6-foot-3, 241-pound Aguilar signed out of Venezuela in 2007. He spent his first two years of professional baseball playing in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League.

In 2010 he got his first taste of baseball in the U.S., hitting .244/.301/.306 in 32 games at short-season Mahoning Valley after batting .259/.293/.482 in 29 games in the Rookie-level Arizona League.

It wasn't until 2011 that the righthanded slugger began to show real signs of progress, splitting the season between low Class A Lake County and high Class A Kinston.

Aguilar hit .292/.370/.544 with 27 doubles, two triples, 19 home runs and 69 RBIs for the Captains. When the 21-year old was promoted to Kinston, he batted .257/.323/.389 in 31 games with three doubles and 13 RBIs. He looked good enough to earn a roster spot in the Arizona Fall League.

"We had a need at first base in the fall league," Hawkins said. "And with the way he handled himself in the Carolina League, we felt comfortable with him taking on the challenge. Clearly, the early returns have been encouraging."

Through 12 games, Aguilar was hitting .354/.466/.667 with six doubles, three home runs and eight RBIs.

"Despite his size, he is surprisingly agile around the bag at first base," Hawkins said. "We feel like he has the potential to be an impact bat for us down the road."

SMOKE SIGNALS

• Tommy John surgery essentially wiped out righthander Hector Rondon's 2011 minor league season, but he's pitching this winter for Caracas in the Venezuelan League.

• The Indians finalized their major league coaching staff for the 2012 season. The team promoted Scott Radinsky to pitching coach and named Dave Miller bullpen coach and Tom Wiedenbauer first-base coach.

Tony posts a possible systemwide depth chart for 2012. Really weak-looking Aeros offense. NOt so hot offense anywhere else. Pitching is a bit better looking, but if the Aeros have to start Steven Wright they're going to really bad at all aspects of the game, execpt I guess their defense since Diaz, Bellows and Perez are fine fielders.

The Indians announced that they signed catcher Michel Hernandez to a minor league contract and invited him to Spring Training. The 33-year-old hit .273/.384/.381 in the upper minors of the Indians' and Orioles' systems in 2011.
