Cimber was brought back yesterday and Logan Allen removed from the active roster. I assume that they get to select a full 28 man group today irrespective of when guys were optioned. I would guess Allen comes back, but would not object to keeping Cimber, too.
It will be incredible to me if they retain all 3 catchers on the roster. It's not like they don't have the best defensive catcher in the baseball and none of them can hit. Perez has had some health issues, so that's the only possible rationale.
And what to do for outfielders?
Mercado concluded the season the way he started it with an obscene batting average of 128 and OPS of 349. He struck out 30% of his appearances. And actually was worse than that over the last 15 games he played in Avg 105, OPS 287; and yet worse over his 7 games 1 single in 16 at bats with 8 strikeouts. He's also been unimpressive on defense.
Naquin finished going 1-23 with 1 walk and 11 strikeouts and apparently fouled a ball of his foot on Saturday.
Naylor ended on a mild upswing, with 7 hits in his last 19 at bats, 2 of them doubles, no walks but only 2 K. He was rarely used against lefties, but when offered a chance he was ok, 3 hits in 8 at bats.
Luplow finished better, 765 OPS over his last 15 games, Right handed pitchers still are a challenge, merely 122 average, but 4 of his 5 hits were for extra bases and he drew 8 walks in 49 trips. So his split line is 265 OBP, 293 SLG. That makes him my everyday RF.
So I go with an everyday OF of Naylor, DeShields and Luplow. Maybe keep Mercado around to pinch run? But Zimmer is a better base stealer. Can't think of any particular reason Naquin should be on the roster except that have to try find 28 bodies.
