It has come a little faster than was projected, and the Indians are trying not to let a rare opportunity to make the postseason slip past them.

“The plan has always been to try to win games, get to the playoffs and win the World Series,” Antonetti said. “We’re not presumptuous enough to think that we know the exact time of when things will happen. That’s the beauty of baseball.

‘‘But here we find ourselves in the middle of July in the middle of a pennant race. So this is one of those opportunities for us to take advantage. And we’ll do what we can to try to do that.”

AL Central Notes: Twins, White Sox, Indians

On this date in 1909, Ty Cobb stole second, third and home in one inning as the Tigers beat the Red Sox 6-0. The Tigers will be playing the Twins tonight and the Indians will host the White Sox in the other intra-divisional contest of note.

Here's the latest on the winnable AL Central...

The Twins are six games below .500, but they consider themselves buyers, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. They’re six games out of first place and continue targeting middle relief. GM Bill Smith told Rosenthal that he wants “depth” to complement Joe Nathan, Matt Capps and Glen Perkins.
The White Sox are being uncharacteristically quiet on the trade market, according to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick (on Twitter). Crasnick suggests we'll have a better sense of Chicago's plans after Chicago's upcoming six games against the Indians and Tigers.

Rival executives expect the Indians to keep their prime assets and make incremental moves this year, ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports (Twitter link).

Pence is the one guy who could be a good piece for several seasons and not too expensive, dollar-wise.

Certainly a position of need here.

I wonder if the Tribe could keep the real blue chippers and pull this off.

Kipnis could not contain his excitement, taking to Twitter to announce his arrival.

Indians, Pirates interested in Chris Iannetta

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Indians and Pirates are among the teams that have inquired about the availability of Chris Iannetta.
Colorado is willing to consider offers, likely because top prospect Wilin Rosario isn't far away from the majors. Iannetta, 28, is batting .224/.376/.412 with 10 homers and 36 RBI over 288 plate appearances this season. He will make $3.55 million next season with a $5 million club option or $250,000 buyout for 2013. The Red Sox have expressed interest in the past, but Morosi writes that they are satisfied with their catching situation at the moment.

Hopefully, as Moses before him, he can part Lake Erie and lead Cleveland to October baseball....

Iannetta is a Rhode Island kid so I wouldn't mind the Tribe picking him up. Realisticly, he's a little too pricey for a backup. Maybe the Tribe is thinking about moving Santana.

Or in the short term at least the Indians aren't expecting Choo or Sizemore to contribute much for the remainder of the season.

Santana sees more time at 1B and LaPorta plays some OF maybe?
