Cleveland Guardians Spring Training Prospect Report: 2/27/26

Watson gets more opportunities with DeLauter out

Justin Lada

Feb 28

Chicago Cubs 8, Cleveland Guardians 6

Starter

Kahlil Watson (LF): 1-2, 2B - Watson could be benefiting some with Chase DeLauter missing a few games for “lower body soreness - hamstring.” He started this one and smoked a 111 MPH double off 2025 MLB rookie reliever Ryan Rolison. Now, Rolison certainly wasn’t good in 2025 in Colorado, but it’s a good chance for Watson to get some more reps and take advantage.

Pitchers

Parker Messick: 2.2IP, 4H, 2ER, 2K, HR - Messick sat his usual 92-94 and threw his sinker more in this game than he did last year, more than his changeup even. His sinker did not garner good results in 2025 in his MLB debut, so perhaps he is trying to fine tune it a little, which would make sense. Not sure we’ll see the same usage pattern, but it is interesting.

Jack Leftwich: 0.1IP, K - Came on to finish Messick’s last inning and got two whiffs out of three pitches with his curve and slider, sitting 94 with the fastball.

Jake Miller: 0.1IP, 3ER, 3BB - Rough outing for Miller, throwing just five strikes in 25 pitches. He threw his entire arsenal but nothing for strikes. Miller’s Double-A success in 2025 seemed to rely heavily on his sinker/cutter/change but no cutters here, and his curveball was his second most used pitch. Hard to read into it too much, but he didn’t succeed in Triple-A last year with the MLB ball either.

Jay Driver: 0.2IP, 2H, ER, BB, 2K - Driver’s sidearm slider was pretty effective in getting him two strikeouts, landing three for called strikes and five whiffs. But when he threw any kind of fastball, it was hit hard. He allowed two balls in play, both were hit hard and that led to the loss.

Notable Reserves

Joe Lampe (RF): 1-1, BB - Laced a 108 MPH single off journeyman reliever Gavin Hollowell and worked a walk. Also did a nice job not chasing low against Porter Hodge, who I think is a very nasty reliever.

Jonah Advincula (LF): 2-2, 2B, 3 RBI - A 101 MPH single off Hodge and a 103 MPH double off Hollowell. That’s definitely around the top end of exit velocity for Advincula, who doesn’t have a ton of power. But both hits were off MLB arms. Advincula, normally a very sound defender, did commit a throwing error.

Dayan Frias (PR-2B): 0-1, BB, RBI - This was Frias’ last game in camp as all WBC players are headed out to practice with their teams before games start this coming week.

Other Reserves

Cooper Ingle (C): 0-1 - Took over for Bo Naylor, who is also in his last game for now as heads off for Team Canada. Ingle will get a lot more games in the lineup now while Naylor is off in the WBC.

Jacob Cozart (DH): 0-1, K - Cozart should also see quite a bit of action as well behind Hedges.

Dean Curley (3B): 0-1

Milan Tolentino (SS): 0-2

Maick Collado (1B): 1-2

Jaison Chourio (CF): 0-2, 2K

Got to finally watch a game. Colorado vs US. That was some hitting display the youngsters put. Surprised to to see DeLauter in the lineup as dh. HR, 2b both hard hit. And was impressed with Watson. He just continues to stroke and we will see him, late summer, definitely next year.

Cleveland Guardians World Baseball Classic Prospect Report: 3/4/26

Travis Bazzana kicks off WBC with a banger

Matthew Kennell

Mar 5

Scoreboard

World Baseball Classic

Australia 3, Chinese Taipei 0 - Statcast
Canada 5, Philadelphia Phillies 3 - Statcast
Atlanta Braves 9, Colombia 1 - Statcast
New York Mets 5, Israel 2 - Statcast

Guardians Prospects

Travis Bazzana (2B, Australia): 2-for-4, R, HR, RBI - The leadoff man from the Guardians was the only player to record multiple hits in the World Baseball Classic opener against the Chinese Taipei and launched a solo homerun to lead Australia to a 3-0 victory. He was able to turn on an inside fastball and burn it for a 383-foot no-doubt homerun deep into the seats in right field of the Tokyo Dome.

https://www.mlb.com/video/travis-bazzan ... st-popular

Matt Wilkinson (RP, Canada): S (1), 2.0 IP, H, 0 R, 0 BBs, 5 Ks - Wilkinson entered the game in the eighth and immediately struck out the side to halt the momentum of the Phillies and tossed a scoreless ninth to secure the save for Team Canada. He threw 22 strikes on his 31 pitches and got eight swings and misses, five of which on his slider. He didn’t top 89 on any pitch but he did face a few upper level Phillies minor leaguers and even struck out one of their top prospects, Aroon Escobar.

Dayan Frias (SS, Colombia): 0-for-2, DP - Frias took over for former Guardian Gio Urshela in the bottom of the fourth after a tough go of it defensively for the veteran and had a groundout and lineout in his two plate appearances. Frias was able to start a double play with the glove and was error-free.

Ryan Prager (RP, Israel): 1.2 IP, H, R, 2 BBs, 3 Ks - The Mets threatened after a pair of one-out walks in the second inning, but the southpaw was able to escape the jam. He struck out the first two batters he faced in the third inning, but a solo homerun just barely cleared the fence in left to give New York a 1-0 lead. It wasn’t particularly hard hit nor would it leave the yard in many ballparks, but on this day, it was a run scored. Prager had three whiffs on six total swings on the fastball, which came in at an alarming 87.6 at it’s peak. In college, Prager was 89-92 and at times 94. There’s a reason his stock tumbled in the 2025 draft. Maybe it’s early, but that velo is certainly not great to see so far.

Re: GameTime!™

Two stinky outfielders had classic games last night:
Nolan Jones hit a very weak groundball and struck out twice. Since the first wonderful day of spring training, Big Nolan is now 1-20 with no walks and 10 strikeouts.
Johnnathen Rodriguez hit three groundballs, one of which was so weak that he got to first successfully.

With strong performances by Valera and Martinez and even Halpin and Walton, there's no reason to keep those two.

Re: GameTime!™

DeLauter of course is capable of hitting major league pitching but it honestly seems hard to imagine he will be an anywhere near everyday player.
His lower body soreness turns out to be another hamstring pull, and after he returned Sunday to DH he was scheduled to play again Thursday but was held out longer.

Cleveland Guardians Spring Training Prospect Report: 3/5/26

Bazzana's defense shines in WBC, young hitters go off in spring training

Justin Lada

Mar 6

Scoreboard

Cleveland Guardians 12, Chicago White Sox 3 - Statcast
Team Australia 3, Team Czechia 1

World Baseball Classic

Travis Bazzana (2B): 0-4, BB, K - Bazzana struck out swinging on a changeup in the first inning and later worked a walk that led to a homer for the Aussies in their second win of the tournament. He didn’t have a big offensive day but he played great defensively and that’s good to see.

Starters

George Valera (LF): 1-3, 2B, RBI, K - While Chase DeLauter continues to battle hamstring soreness, Valera has stayed in the lineup and fared pretty well. He smoked a 105 MPH double off White Sox starter Sean Burke in the first inning. He did struggle with Burke’s arsenal of breaking stuff in his second at bat that led to a strikeout looking and didn’t do much better with Erick Fedde later.

Juan Brito (2B): 0-3 - Brito was one of the few young hitters in the first inning that didn’t have success vs. Burke and continues to have an up and down spring training so far.

Angel Genao (3B): 1-3, 2B - Genao’s double came off a minor league reliever and he also took a pitch that was low and in off the plate (pitch #4), which makes the fact that he squared it up a heck of a feat. Not a pitch you’d want to offer at, but barreling it is impressive. Not sure how sustainable that will be at the major league level, but it’s interesting.

Notable Reserves

Jaison Chourio (PH-CF): 1-2, 3B - His lone hit was a 102 MPH triple came off the same reliever Genao pummeled too.

Milan Tolentino (PH-SS): 1-1, HR, 3 RBI - A 106 MH homer for Tolentino came off of the same reliever, who the Guardians young hitters had a good day against.

Alfonsin Rosario (PH-LF): 0-2, 2K - Rosario took a called strikeout and a swinging strikeout and has looked very overmatched in his big league looks this spring.

Kody Huff (C): 2-2, 2B - Huff had the hardest hit ball of the game, a 109 MPH 2B. Exit velos have been good for Huff in his career but has had a hard time maximizing them in terms of consistency and the right launch angle. But he’s hit the ball hard and we know that it’s in there.

Wuilfredo Antunez (RF): 1-2, RBI, K - Antunez tortured Jedixson Paez with a hard hit of his own like Choruio and Tolentino. But later in the game, Hagen Smith really gave him a hard time, chasing a slider way, WAY out of the zone.

Alex Mooney (2B): 1-2, RBI - Mooney was able to turn around a 96 MPH fastball from Hagen Smith for a single for his one at bat and an RBI.

Other Reserves

Cameron Barstad (DH): 0-1 K

Riley Nelson (1B): 0-1

Cleveland Guardians Spring Training and WBC Prospect Report: 3/6/26

DeLauter returns, Watson shows off centerfield defense

Justin Lada

Mar 7

Scoreboard

Cleveland Guardians 5, Los Angeles Angels 3 - Statcast
Puerto Rico 5, Colombia 0 - Statcast

Starters

Chase DeLauter (RF): 1-3, RBI, E - A lot of ground balls by DeLauter in his return to the lineup. Surprising to see him in the field after a three game (four day) layoff between being the DH on Sunday. But he got three at bats and played the field, looking just fine despite his throwing error and not lifting the ball in the air like he normally does. He won’t play on Saturday and we’ll see the plan from there. They’ll continue to be cautious with his schedule.

Petey Halpin (LF): 1-3, 2B, RBI - Smacked a solid double off 31 year old MLB reliever Shaun Anderson for his lone hit. Halpin does look a little physically bigger this year, and he’s once again changed his stance/swing, which he’s been doing for the last three years. They talked about doing it to shorten his swing to better catch up to velocity and unlock more power. We’ll see if THIS change is the one that sticks. But development isn’t linear. Sometimes it takes multiple changes and attempts to find what clicks. But it’s hard not to be skeptical when this has been a constant re-occurrence for him. Give Halpin credit for not being satisfied or stubborn and continuing to put in the work to get better though.

Dayan Frias (SS - Colombia): 0-3, BB, K - Quite day for Frias starting in his second straight WBC as Team Colombia at shortstop. Colombia might be going home pretty quickly though.

Notable Reserves

Kahlil Watson (CF): 0-1, BB - Worked an easy four pitch work against Chase Silseth but his notable contribution was an interesting catch in center where the wind and sun rerouted him multiple times and he made a diving catch. It was not a pretty route or read. The conditions probably made it harder than it should be and Watson’s speed and athleticism helped him recover and make the catch, which is exciting.

Jake Miller: 0.1IP K - Three swings, two whiffs. Pretty nice final big league spring appearance for Miller as he was re-assigned to minor league camp. His splitter was good and he topped out at 93.

Doug Nikhazy: 0.1IP, K - A weird outing for Nikhazy, who was optioned to Columbus. He stuck out the only batter he faced and threw four pitches - changeups, sliders and a curve. No fastballs of any kind. Probably for the best.

Will Dion: IP, H, K, SV - Despite topping out at 90, Dion managed to get three whiffs on his fastball. It’s a bizarre offering. I’m not sure it works in the majors, but he somehow manages to make it effective. But it also hasn’t ticked up in shorter outings. I’m not sure what to make of Dion at this point, who by the way, now listed at 5’8 with the new ABS measuring system

Other Reserves

Ryan Cesarini (RF): 0-1

Maick Collado (3B): 1-1

Jacob Cozart (C): 0-1 - Optioned to minor league camp after the game, so more reps in big league games for Ingle behind Hedges along with Fry and Nunez.

Ralphy Velazquez (1B): 0-1

Cooper Ingle (DH): 0-1

Dauri Fernandez (2B): 0-1

Welbyn Francisca (SS): 0-1

Joe Lampe (LF): 0-1

LUCAS RAMIREZ SHOWS OFF HIS ARM

Ramirez also homered off another MLB star this week, taking Rangers ace Jacob deGrom deep in his first at-bat in Wednesday's exhibition game in Surprise, Ariz.

Not bad for a 20-year-old.

That’s right: Ramirez is only 20 years, 49 days old, making him the second-youngest player to hit his first World Baseball Classic homer.
