tory and continues to add impact talent in the draft and international market. The top 10 is stuffed with high-

Rating the top prospects at each position, BA assigns Cleveland these rankings:

Catcher, none among the top 10
First Base: Velazquez #6, Kayfus #9 [Manzardo has graduated from prospect status] That's a lot of depth and helps explain trade of Naylor
Second Base: Bazzana #2; Brito misses the top 10
Shortstop: Genao #12; Francisca not yet among the top 25
Third Base: none
Center Field: Chourio #5
LF/RF: DeLauter #4
RHP: None among the top 35; let's see how the 2024 draftees develop
LHP: Cantillo #11

Re: Minor Matters

Alex Clemmey who went to the Nationals with tena and r.ramirez for Thomas is #15 LHP. Ramirez does not make the Nats top 30; Tena neither but he has probably graduated.

Ramirez factors on the Nationals depth chart but neither he nor Tena appears on the projected 2028 lineup and Clemmey is not listed in the 2028 rotation.

Tena's K/BB numbers will keep him off BA prospect highlights. He hit a nice 274 for the Nationals but the rest of his line was not great: 304 OBP/363 SLG. More significant from their perspective would be his 39K/7 BB in 164 Total at bats. In the minors the K/BB was about 3.5.

Re: Minor Matters

13402
BA prospect guidebook always included some possible Breakout Prospects

Braylon Doughty, RHP

Preseason Rank: 12
BA Grade/Risk: 55/Extreme

Track Record: Doughty ranked as the No. 47 prospect in the 2024 class on the back of his tremendous feel to spin the ball. The Guardians signed him for slot value—a $2,569,200 bonus—with the 36th overall pick in the draft to coax him out of a commitment to Oklahoma State.

Scouting Report: A 6-foot-1, 196-pound righthander, Doughty is a standout athlete who operates with a smooth, balanced, low-effort delivery. He has a clean and loose arm action and throws from a three-quarters slot he repeats well for a teenage pitcher. Doughty dominated his SoCal competition during the spring with a low-90s fastball that has been up to 96-97 mph and a pair of high-spin, plus breaking balls. His 78-80 mph downer curveball registers spin rates in the 3,200 rpm range and he pairs it with a hard slider in the mid 80s with similarly high pure spin rates. While both pitches have plus potential, Cleveland might have Doughty focus on the curveball initially. The curve immediately becomes a candidate for the best breaking ball in Cleveland’s system thanks to its depth and his feel to land it. Doughty has thrown a mid-80s changeup but it lagged behind his other three pitches in high school. His clean operation and athleticism could lead to above-average control.

The Future: Doughty is a high-upside righty with natural athleticism. He’s a scratch golfer and kicked a 60-yard field goal in high school. He has midrotation upside and should start the 2025 season with Low-A Lynchburg.

Scouting Grades: FB: 55. CB: 65. SL: 60. CH: 45. CTL: 50.

Juneiker Caceres, OF

Preseason Rank: 21
BA Grade/Risk: 50/Extreme

Track Record: Caceres signed for $300,000 out of Venezuela in Cleveland’s 2024 international class and played most of the 2024 season as a 16-year-old in the Dominican Summer League. Despite his youth, Caceres was one of the most impressive hitters in the DSL and slashed .340/.425/.504 with more walks than strikeouts.

Scouting Report: Caceres is a 5-foot-10, 168-pound lefthanded hitter and outfielder who lacks much in the way of physical projection, but stands out for his barrel skills and batting eye. Caceres has an uppercut path but an advanced ability to use the entire field with an approach that some scouts view as overly opposite-field oriented. He’ll need to pull the ball more frequently to tap into his power as he ages, and while he might not add massive amounts of strength or power in the future, his 90th percentile exit velocity of 108 mph is already an exceptional figure for a 16-year-old. He’s an aggressive hitter who likes to swing and so far that approach has worked just fine. Caceres played all three outfield positions but is a fringy runner who should fit best in a corner outfield spot. He will need to work to become a fringe-average defender.

The Future: Caceres should be ready to take his exciting hit/power combo stateside in 2025. His offensive tools give him everyday upside but he’s got plenty of development time ahead.

Scouting Grades: HIT: 55. POW: 50. RUN: 45. FLD: 45. ARM: 50.

Robert Arias, OF

Preseason Rank: 29
BA Grade/Risk: 50/Extreme

Track Record: Arias was the centerpiece of Cleveland’s 2024 international class when he signed for $1.9 million out of the Dominican Republic. He boasted excellent hand-eye coordination and contact skills with a high-energy play style as an amateur and hit .247/.367/.347 with 29 stolen bases in 41 games in the Dominican Summer League.

Scouting Report: Arias is a 6-foot-1, 168-pound lefthanded hitter with a top-of-the-order toolset. He makes tons of contact and has a chance to be an above-average hitter, though at the moment he tends to get overly pull-oriented and his bat path leads to plenty of ground ball contact. Scouts believe he has the sort of athleticism to make the necessary adjustments mechanically, along with the frame and bat speed that could unlock above-average raw power and near-average game power. He’s a great runner who turns in 70-grade run times and covers plenty of ground in center field. He should easily stick there moving forward with a chance for plus defensive ability. Even if he needs to move off the position, his plus arm should allow him to play either corner at a high level.

The Future: Arias will continue working to optimize his swing, but has the sort of tools to develop into an everyday regular. He should make his stateside debut in 2025 in his age-18 season.

Scouting Grades: HIT: 50. POW: 45. RUN: 70. FLD: 55. ARM: 60.

Re: Minor Matters

Of all those players the most intruiging based on 2024 stats to me is catcher Bennett Thompson, 13th round pick, from Oregon. Finished his minor league debut season with Low A Lynchburg with 3 hits in 49 at bats. Successfully caught 3 of 27 attempted basestealers. There was obviously some reason he was drafted; here's his predraft scouting report:

Thompson is a 5-foot-10, 196-pound catcher who hit extremely well for Oregon in parts of two seasons in 2022 and 2023. In his first full season for the Ducks in 2024 his offensive numbers back up a bit, as he slashed .281/.386/.431 with less power than he had flashed in each of the previous two seasons. Thompson has a pull-heavy approach at the plate and generally stays within the strike zone on his swing decisions and rarely misses a fastball, but he profiles as a bottom-of-the-order type bat. He did an excellent job controlling the run game in 2024 and threw out 9-of-19 (47.4%) base stealers with a compact arm action and solid arm strength. He has the actions to stick behind the plate with solid mobility and hands and will need to be an above-average defender at the position to make up for his offensive questions. Thompson has a fairly extensive history in wood bat summer leagues but never did much to impress in that capacity beyond putting up solid strikeout and walk rates.

Jaison Chourio Named Guardians’ Top International Prospect

January 13, 2025

By Andres Chavez

This week, the new period to sign international free agents will be officially open.

It means teams such as the Cleveland Guardians will be able to add to their organizational pool of players.

The Guards have 26 commitments and they will be able to put pen to paper on them starting on Wednesday.

To celebrate the new signing period, MLB Pipeline put together quite an interesting list: each team’s best international prospect.

The Guardians have plenty of talent acquired via international free agency: Angel Martinez, Angel Genao, Juan Brito, and many of their top prospects were once in this position a few years ago.

The league’s prospect specialists, however, consider outfielder Jaison Chourio the best international prospect on the Guardians.

“Chourio can’t match the pure power and speed of his older brother, Jackson, but he might offer better bat-to-ball skills and defensive value. Signed out of Venezuela for $1.2 million in 2022, he was named the Carolina League’s MVP and top prospect last year after leading the Single-A circuit in walks (86 in 98 games) and ranking second in on-base percentage (.414) and third in OPS (.812) at age 19 before breaking his left wrist diving for a fly ball in late August,” they wrote about him.

<

AMERICAN LEAGUE CENTRAL

Guardians: Jaison Chourio, OF (No. 3/MLB No. 64)

Signed out of Venezuela for $1.2 million in 2022, he was named the Carolina League's MVP and top prospect last year after leading the Single-A circuit in walks (86 in 98 games) and ranking second in on-base percentage (.414) and third in OPS (.812) at age 19 before breaking his left wrist diving for a fly ball in late August.

<

Clearly, Chourio is very highly regarded by analysts: his on-base skills are very impressive, as he shows complete control of the strike zone.

He is already 100 percent over the wrist fracture that ended his 2024 campaign prematurely and will be ready for new, harder challenges this year.

Thanks to his 144 wRC+ last season in Single-A Lynchburg, he should be just about ready to be tested against tougher pitching in the High-A Lake County Captains.

If Chourio keeps passing every test with flying colors as he has to this point, there is a chance he will become a major leaguer in two or three years.

Fans can’t wait.

Guardians Star Prospect Adds More Muscle This Offseason

January 14, 2025

By Andres Chavez

Recently named the best international prospect on the Cleveland Guardians, young outfielder Jaison Chourio is determined to succeed.

The kind of work ethic and willingness to sacrifice time and prepare the body and mind for an MLB career is often hard to find in young players.

Chourio, however, has no qualms about getting up early, working out, and improving as a player.

You can actually see the results of his dedication to his body.

“Cleveland #Guardians 19yr old switch-hitting OF prospect Jaison Chourio already looking noticeably bigger out at the organizations Goodyear Development Complex. Only thing missing from Chourio’s game has been power. He has plenty of time and room to grow into his 6’1″ frame,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.

Image

Chourio, as a player, has it all except for relevant game power.

He has contact, having hit .269 last year in Single-A and .321 the year before across two levels.

He has an incredible understanding of the strike zone with his jaw-dropping .414 OBP and 19.9 percent walk rate in Lynchburg in 2024.

He showcases incredible defense in the outfield and mind-blowing wheels, as his 44 stolen bases attest.

The only thing he doesn’t excel at on a baseball field is power, or at least not yet: he homered just five times last campaign, in 432 trips to the plate.

As of mid-January, however, he is looking bigger and stronger, and there is a chance this reflects on his power output.

Chourio has the kind of frame that will allow him to pack on some muscle without losing too much speed or athleticism.

This appears to be the goal here: hitting more home runs.

The dynamic outfielder is already a consensus top-100 prospect.

A power breakout could catapult him into the top 10, though.

After all, he had a 144 wRC+ in Single-A without the power.

Imagine what more home runs would do to his statistical profile.

4 Guardians Appear On Baseball Prospectus’ Top 101 Prospects List

January 15, 2025

By Andres Chavez

With the opening of the new international signing period on Wednesday and many specialists and publications starting to reveal their lists of top young players, prospect season is officially starting in MLB.

Baseball Prospectus, among the most recognized and reputable analysts in the industry, recently published their list of the top 101 prospects in the game.

The piece is behind a paywall but is very much worth the read.

They have the Cleveland Guardians with four prospects among the best 101.

“Cleveland #Guardians come in with four players in @baseballpro top 100 prospects for the 2025 season. 12. Travis Bazzana (2B), 62. Chase DeLauter (OF), 78. Angel Genao (SS), 83. Jaison Chourio (CF),” Guardians Prospective posted on X.

12. Travis Bazzana (2B)
62. Chase DeLauter (OF)
78. Angel Genao (SS)
83. Jaison Chourio (CF)
The Guardians system is strong on position players, and it shows if you go through the list name by name.

The best-ranked Guardians prospect is, without a doubt, second baseman Travis Bazzana.

The No. 1 draft pick posted a 126 wRC+ in his first taste of professional baseball in High-A, with the Lake County Captains last year.

He is the Guardians second baseman of the future now that Andrés Giménez has been traded.

He is not quite ready for the bigs, though.

Genao and Chourio have more or less the same timeline as Bazzana.

They both project as starters thanks to their solid on-base skills and other traits.

DeLauter, on the other hand, is very close to major-league ready.

Many specialists would argue that he is ready now.

He projects as a starting right fielder with a batting average close to .300, 20+ home runs, and solid on-base numbers.

The Guardians are already excellent.

The future, somehow, is even brighter.

Guardians Linked To 26 Players As International Free Agency Period Opens

January 15, 2025

By Andres Chavez

January 15 is a big day for MLB clubs, agents, scouts, training facilities and academies, and, of course, young players in Latin America.

It’s the day in which the new period of international free agency opens, and prospects can sign with the teams they have committed their future to.

Except for the finalists in the Roki Sasaki sweepstakes, most teams will start signing these commits on Wednesday.

One of these squads, the Cleveland Guardians, is known for its strong farm system.

They are currently linked with as many as 26 names in this period, and there could be more if they decide to invest in some players who have decommited from organizations still in the running for Sasaki.

“Cleveland #Guardians are linked to sign 26 players for this year’s international signing period that begins tomorrow, Wednesday, January 15th. The class is headlined by (C) prospect Hiverson Lopez out of Venezuela,” Guardians Prospective posted on X.

The Guardians have had much success with international free agents.

Most of their current top prospects are international: Angel Genao, Juan Brito, Angel Martinez, Franco Aleman, Johnathan Rodriguez, and many more.

For this period, their most expensive commit is Lopez, a Venezuelan catcher.

He has been ranked as the 41st-best international prospect by MLB Pipeline.
“Hiverson’s best tool is his bat. He already shows good power for his age with potential to add more has he continues to develop and mature. Lopez has a good balance at the plate with the ability to drive the ball to all fields. His swing is smooth and simple leading to high contact rates while still maintaining the ability to produce impressive bat speed,” Guardians Prospective wrote about Lopez’s offensive profile.

On defense, he explains that he is still developing, but the tools are there for a nice backstop: athleticism, a good arm, accuracy, and good framing skills.

Heins Brito, Luis García, Gustavo Baptista, Jose Riera, Luis Galan, and Rodny Rosario are other talented players expected to join the Guards in this period.

Cleveland Guardians 2025 International Signing Day Preview

Here is everything you need to know about the Cleveland Guardians on International Signing Day.

Todd Paquette | 7 Hours Ago

The Cleveland Guardians are currently linked to 26 players for their 2025 international signing class who are set to sign on Wednesday, January 15. The Guardians received a $6,908,600 signing pool by MLB for the 2025 international signing period.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the international signing period used to begin on July 2, but now begins on January 15 of every season. An international player is eligible to sign with a Major League team between January 15 and December 15, 2025. He must turn 16 before he signs. In practical terms, that means players born between September 1, 2007, and August 31, 2008, are eligible to sign.

Cleveland tends to go with a position player-heavy approach internationally while utilizing the MLB Draft to restock their system with top arms. Position players are considered the safest route usually in the international market especially due to the age and projection as most of the players signed are just 16-to-17 years old.

The Guardians 2025 international class includes 26 players from three different countries. Venezuela leads the way with 16 players followed by nine players from the Dominican Republic and one from Cuba. The class includes 12 pitchers, nine middle infielders, three catchers and two outfielders.

The following 26 players have been arranged in order by their expected signing bonuses from highest to lowest starting with this year's top international sign catcher Hiverson Lopez. Lopez is currently ranked as the 41st-best overall MLB international prospect for this year's class by MLB Pipeline.

Hiverson Lopez - C

Lopez the top international sign at $900K comes out of La Guaria, Venezuela. The 16-year-old catching prospect trains out of MBP Baseball Academy.

Hiverson's best tool is his bat. He already shows good power for his age with potential to add more has he continues to develop and mature. Lopez has good balance at the plate with the abiliity to drive the ball to all fields. His swing is smooth and simple leading to high contact rates while still maintaining the ability to produce impressive bat speed.

Defensively he is still developing but should be able to stick at catching due to his athletic ability and well as an above average arm and accurate throws. He has soft hands and shows the ability to frame pitches as well as a high baseball IQ.

https://twitter.com/i/status/1757999036487827803

Heins Brito - SS

Brito is from San Cristobal, Dominican Republic and trained at Banana Baseball Academy. The 17-year-old shortstop is expected to sign for $825K.

Brito is considered to be well rounded on both offense and defense that can impact the game on both sides of the ball. He is a natural shortstop that possesses above average speed and should be able to stick at the position moving forward.

Offensively he is a switch-hitter with great bat-to-ball skills and strong sense of the strike zone. He is considered to currently be a stronger hitter from the left side but should hit for high average overall from both sides of the plate. He has a smaller frame and lacks power currently but has a chance as he matures to get stronger and drive the ball with more authority in the future.

Defensively Brito shows above average range with soft hands and a strong arm. He is a terrific athlete with great overall instincts for the shortstop position.

https://twitter.com/i/status/1843842457190232560

Luis Garcia - SS

Garcia is from Santiago, Dominican Republic and trained at Bases Loaded Academy. The 17-year-old shortstop is expected to sign for $775K.

The switch-hitter has terrific bat-to-ball skills with high end bat speed and is considered one of the best offensive talents amongst the middle infielders in the 2025 class. Garcia has a strong muscular stocky build with extra base hit ability that lots displays power potential. Defensively he may eventually move from shortstop to second or third base.

https://twitter.com/i/status/1628410872505802752

Gustavo Baptista - C

Baptista is from Barquisimeto, Venezuela and trained at Carlos Rios Baseball Group. The 16-year-old catcher is expected to sign for $450K.

Baptista has a tall athletic wirily body that has good projection with room to grow. He already shows power potential with good balance and hitting ability at plate to go deep into counts.

Defensively he started out as an infielder but moved to the catching and has showed very good progress behind the plate and should be able to stick at the position. He possesses an above average arm with soft hands and the ability to frame pitches well.

Overall, Baptista has a very high ceiling with plus makeup and could be a sleeper in the class.

https://twitter.com/i/status/1860750200425365602
