July 7: RHP Spencer Howard added to active roster; LHP Logan Allen optioned.

The Guardians acquired Howard, who had been designated for assignment by the Giants, on July 5 with the intention of putting him on their Major League roster. That meant somebody had to go, and that somebody turned out to be Allen, who had a season-high nine strikeouts in his start on Saturday against the Giants, but has generally struggled to live up to the expectations set by his strong rookie season in 2023. Allen is 8-4 with a 5.67 ERA and 71 ERA+ (29% worse than league average) in 87 1/3 innings across 18 starts.

“It’s tough,” manager Stephen Vogt said of sending Allen down. “Logan is such a big part of our success so far through this year, and it's an opportunity for Logan to go down and get some consistency back. We’ve seen it. He’ll have one outing where he's out there, he's efficient, he's filling up the strike zone, he goes six innings, and then another one where he’s throwing a lot of pitches and struggles to find the strike zone and doesn't quite make it that far. And so he's been working really hard on some delivery, some different things that are going to help him with that consistency.”

Howard will join the Guardians rotation after going 1-1 with a 5.63 ERA in seven appearances (two starts) for the Giants this season, and posting a 5.90 ERA in 10 starts for Triple-A Sacramento. The team is still working through when Howard will make his Guardians debut.

[Is Howard that much better than Logan? It was nice having a lefty in the rotation. 9 strikeouts against the Giants and if Vogt hadn't pulled Logan when he did, maybe Logan gets out of the inning without 3 runs scoring. At this point, can't say I like this move.]

Spencer Howard may have talent but he certainly has had no success.
Surprised by Allen demotion; I have to assume there are one or two specific issues that he's going to work on in Columbus and taking advantage of the All Star break will miss only two or three starts before returning better than ever.
