A Guardians-Marlins trade to give Cleveland stranglehold on AL Central

The Guardians could take a strong hold on the AL Central by making a move for this dominant ace.

The Cleveland Guardians have gotten off to a terrific start to 2024, placing themselves in first place in the AL Central with a record of 37-19.

Cleveland may have the best, most consistent bullpen in all of baseball. But their starting rotation hasn't been as dominant as the bullpen has. An easy way to fix this?

Go all-in and trade for a 26-year-old fringe ace with All-Star potential, in Jesus Luzardo. Luzardo could step into the ace role on the Guardians and turn their entire pitching staff into one of the most dominant in baseball.

Ken Rosenthal recently called Luzardo the "single most likely player to be traded" at this year's trade deadline.

A Guardians-Marlins trade that shows Cleveland's desire to win now

There are a few things that make this trade a possibility. The first thing is going to be the fact that Luzardo is under team control for two more seasons after 2024. Cleveland wouldn't take a huge leap like this for a rental.

With that being said, this is a huge leap. The price for Luzardo won't be cheap, but Cleveland could keep their top five prospects and they hold the number one pick in this season's MLB Draft.

It would take the powerful George Valera, a reliable lefty Joey Cantillo and a speedy outfielder in Jake Fox to make the Marlins consider this deal. Even at this price, it may not be enough for the Marlins, who are bound to get a ton of attention for their southpaw starter.

Valera offers the Marlins a high-ceiling outfielder with the potential to be a future slugger in the big leagues. He has serious power potential and if he can work through some strikeout woes, he could be a legit big leaguer in a few seasons.

Cantillo hasn't pitched in 2024 just yet but is set to begin his season soon. The lefty has done a good job at adding velocity to his arsenal, making him a legit candidate to be in a big league rotation in the near future.

Fox is a bit of a long shot to be a serious big leaguer anytime soon, but he does showcase good speed and a solid glove in the outfield.

For the Guardians, this trade would help push them further up the AL Central. The Royals are currently hot on their tail and if Cleveland isn't careful, the surging Royals could pass them by. The Guardians need to be aggressive at the deadline, but not reckless. Making a trade for a young, controllable pitcher like Luzardo makes complete sense.

OF George Valera: a few years ago he was one of the top guys in our system and may have made the top 100. He's in his second season in Columbus and when his had is not broken he's managed an average about 210 and OPS a little over 700. He's still only 23. He still walks a lot. He still has power. He still has a good OF arm.
LHP Joey Cantillo 24 year old, good not great prospect, AAA debut not impressive 4.64 ERA 1.52 Currently injured, but should be back soon, Maybe
OF Jake Fox 21 year old IF/OF top ranked prospect on the slugging Lake County Captains, but he's one of the quietest bats on the team, but also youngest. 207 634 this season.

Luzardo is a 26 year old lefty with career mark of 25-32 ERA 4.10. About the same this year: 4.18 Solid in recent starts: 2 runs in his last 20 innings.

It is more realistic than the old deals people used to offer Pete Franklin: six guys we don't want for an All Star.

I'm not baseball scout, but i've been watching some videos on this guy. I think he'd fit in nicely as a fifth starter. He appears to have what it takes to be be successful here.

After Florial was not picked up off waivers following the Guardians designating him for assignment on May 31, the left fielder will remain in the organization with the Clippers. Florial, who the Guardians acquired from the Yankees via trade on Dec. 26, had a slow start to the season (a .173 average in 36 games). Cleveland sees his potential, though, as Florial is only 26 years old, and manager Stephen Vogt was happy to see Florial remain in the organization.

"I couldn't be more happy," Vogt said before Friday's series opener vs. the Marlins. "When we had to make the tough decision to take him off the roster, we expressed that, 'If things don't go the way you would like them to, you know, we would love to have you back.' David Fry is 3rd among DH candidates, which is an open field with Ohtani migration to the NL

Sandlin joins the Injured List. Lifetime ineffective Darren McCaughan up to replace him, he's generally been a starter. Wonder if he or Avila will sub in for Carrasco with Carlos heading to the long relief role that was intended for him before injuries piled up.

I'm thinking Carrasco for one last start then Gavin after that with fingers crossed.
