Mis-read your post Civ. I thought Schneemann was promoted, not Rodriguez.

David Fry deep fries Mets as Guardians win fourth straight, 3-1

Updated: May. 20, 2024, 8:36 p.m.|Published: May. 20, 2024, 8:29 p.m.

By Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- When Stephen Vogt became manager of the Guardians, he knew that David Fry was a versatile player. What he may not have known is just how versatile Fry really is.

Yes, he can play virtually all over the diamond. He can also hit. Why he can even run a little bit.

The Guardians beat the Mets, 3-1, Monday night at Progressive field for their fourth straight win and seventh in the last eight games. Fry had a hand in all three of the Guardians runs while playing left field.

Cleveland is now 31-17. They did not win their 31st game last year until their 65th game of the season on June 11.

The win went to Ben Lively (3-2, 2.84), his third of the season and second in as many starts. He struck out seven and allowed one run, while continuing his revival of the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine as his walk-up music.

The Guardians struck early against right-hander Tylor Magill, who was making his first start since March 31.

Magill, just activated from the injured list, opened the game with two quick outs, but Jose Ramirez singled to right and Josh Naylor moved him to third with a single to left. Naylor advanced to second on an error by left fielder Brandon Nimo.

Fry, who came into the game hitting .358 (19 for 53) in interleague play, brought them both home for a 2-0 lead on a single to right. The single gave Fry 16 RBI for the season.

In 32 games this season, Fry is hitting .329 (26 for 79).

The Mets made it 2-1 on Tomas Nido’s two-out homer in the third. Nido hit a 2-2 pitch into the left field bleachers for just his second homer of the season. It came on the sixth pitch of his at-bat against Lively.

Magill settled down after the first, but rookie Kyle Manzardo caught him in the fourth. Fry, as he did in the first inning, was involved in the run.

Fry opened the inning with a walk and stole second with Manzardo at the plate. Manzardo made the steal count with a double to the wall in center for a 3-1 lead. It was Manzardo’s second RBI in his last two starts.

Lively pitched into the sixth inning and he looked good doing it. The Nido homer was the only run he allowed in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out seven, didn’t walk a batter and allowed six hits.

He left with runners on first and second following singles by Pete Alonso and Nimo. Nick Sandlin relieved and walked Tyrone Taylor to load the bases. Sandlin ended the threat by striking out Brett Baty on a high fastball.

Sandlin, Scott Barlow, Cade Smith and Emmanuel Clase closed the game for Guardians with 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Clase pitched the ninth for his 14th saves in 17 chances.

The Mets have lost six of their last seven games.

The Mets seemed displeased with the strike zone of plate umpire Manny Gonzalez. In the fourth, Starling Marte took a called third strike to end the inning. He was not played and flipped his bat in the air as he walked toward the dugout.

Before the Mets had taken the field, Gonzalez ejected Marte as manager Carlos Mendoza and Marte argued the decision. Mendoza, before being hired by the Mets during the offseason, interviewed to replace Terry Francona.

Megill (1-1, 3.00) allowed three runs, two earned, in five innings. He struck out seven and walked two in his first appearance against the Guardians. Megill made four rehab appearances before being activated for Monday’s start.

Next:

RHP Carlos Carrasco (2-4, 5.16) vs. RHP Adrian Houser (0-3, 7.44) Tuesday at 6:10 p.m. Bally Sports Greats Lakes, WTAM, WMMS, WARF and the Guardians radio network will carry the game.

They continue to get somewhat surprisingly solid starting work by Ben Lively
And continued top notch work by the whole crowd in the bullpen
And more timely hitting by superoverachiever David Fry as well as his aggressive baserunning
And second RBI in two nights by Manzardo: some help from the lower part of the order

Re: GameTime!™

Xavier might have a focus problem in AAA. Not surprised that DeLauter , Curry and Manzardo started out slow in the minors after some success in spring training and Xavier last year. Xavier had to think he was going to make the team. Glad to see him get a chance.

Not the start I was hoping for Rodriguez. At least the bat touched the ball twice.
KC remains hot. Can't shak'em.

If this is a mirage, it’s a darn good one: Guardians hang on to beat Mets, 7-6

Updated: May. 21, 2024, 9:01 p.m.|Published: May. 21, 2024, 8:51 p.m.

By Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Whatever this is, it continued Tuesday night.

The Guardians beat the Mets, 7-6, at Progressive Field and they did it with power, pitching, defense and a baserunning.

All right, so the bullpen sprung a couple of long-ball leaks. But they can’t hang zeroes every time out.

Really, if this a mirage, it’s a darn good one. The Guardians are 32-17, have won five straight and eight of their last nine games.

The Mets, meanwhile, have lost seven of their last nine.

It came down to the ninth inning with Emmanuel Clase on the mound and Francisco Lindor, Cleveland’s former face of the franchise, on first base representing the tying run. Clase ended it by getting Pete Alonso to ground into a 3-6-1 double play.

It was Clase’s 15th save in 18 chances.

Jose Ramirez tried to create some separation in the score with two out in the fifth. He skied a 3-2 pitch by Adrian Houser (0-4, 7.88) into the right field seats for a two-run homer and a 5-2 lead. It was Ramirez 12th homer of the season and his third of the homestand.

The separation did not last.

Jeff McNeil’s two-run homer in the sixth brought the Mets back to within one run at 5-4. Sam Hentges opened the inning with two outs, but Mark Vientos doubled and McNeil homered over the right field wall. It was his second homer of the season.

But the Guardians weren’t done separating. And who else would they turn to besides David Fry?

Lefty Jake Diekman started the sixth in place of Houser. Will Brennan singled to right to bring Fry, pinch-hitting for Kyle Manzardo, to the plate. Fry sent a 2-2 pitch down the right field line and over the wall for a 7-4 lead. It was Fry’s fifth homer of the season and first pinch-hit homer of his career.

Fry, who came into the game hitting .387 (12 for 31) against lefties, has four RBI in the first two games of this three-game series against the Mets.

But even that separation did not last.

Starling Marte, ejected from Monday’s game for arguing balls and strikes, hit a two-run homer in the eighth off Scott Barlow to once again make it a one-run game at 7-6. Marte hit a 2-2 pitch 414 feet onto the home run porch in left field after Barlow hit Tyrone Taylor with a pitch.

After Barlow retired Mark Vientos, Tim Herrin relieved and ended the inning as McNeil sent a screamer to center that Tyler Freeman tracked down.

The Guardians took a 3-0 lead in the third. It all started with Bo Naylor getting hit by a pitch and a one-out bloop double by Brayan Rocchio behind first base that just kept rolling.

Naylor scored from first and Rocchio took third on the throw home.

Tyler Freeman scored Rocchio with a double past third. Freeman moved to third on a two-out grounder by Andres Gimenez. Ramirez scored Freeman with a double over Marte’s head in right field. Ramirez continued to third when Marte bobbled the ball, but went no farther.

hose were the first earned runs Houser has allowed against Cleveland. He’d made two previous appearances against the Guardians while pitching for the Brewers. He did not allow an earned run against them in seven innings.

The Mets swung their way back into the game against emergency starter Xzavion Curry in the fifth. Curry, who arrived from Class AAA Columbus because scheduled starter Carlos Carrasco was placed on the injured list with a strained neck, held the Mets scoreless through four innings.

Vientos changed that with a one-out homer in the fifth. McNeil doubled and Tom Nido moved him to third with a single. Lindor singled for the fourth straight hit of the inning to make it 3-2.

Nick Sandlin (4-0) relieved Curry and walked Pete Alonso to load the bases. Sandlin proceeded to end the inning by striking out Brandon Nimmo and J.D. Martinez, the Nos. 3 and 4 hitters, on eight pitches to keep the keep the Guardians in front.

Sandlin has allowed just 2 of 21 inherited runners to score. The opposition is hitting .042 (1 for 24) against him with runners in scoring position.

Next:

RHP Triston McKenzie (2-3, 3.23) vs. RHP Jose Quintana (1-4, 5.21) Wednesday at 1:10 p.m. Bally Sports Great Lakes, WTAM, WMMS, WAFR and the Guardians radio network will carry the game.

Sure would like to see a way to get Schneemann in Cleveland. Checking his splits, he's been average against lefties holding his own and is raking against righties.

Throughout his time in the minors, Rodríguez has shown to need time to adjust to each new level, but the power is always there, and once he does get acclimated, he starts to mash. Guardians fans will have to be patient with Rodríguez once he does finally get called up, but he should be able to give Cleveland's outfield a generous power boost immediately. Though every prospect is an unproven commodity, the thing that makes Cleveland's runway this season so exciting is that the team does have a number of major-league-ready bats that could certainly bolster the bottom of the order by year's end. Rodríguez will be one of them.;

Don't know if you saw the condensed game, but Rodriguez, for not being familiar with right field, made two excellent plays on balls off the wall, and nearly threw two runners out at second with his cannon arm. WoW! One throw came off the track and a bullet to second right on target.

The last time I remember a guy with that kind of arm was Corey Snyder. If he can hit and get regular playing time in right field, Rodriguez will be fun to watch.
