Re: SPRING TRAINING 2017!
769The rain was only scattered showers in the valley. Guess they didn't want to wait it out. Nothing at my house til 4 PM.
Re: SPRING TRAINING 2017!
770Poster on another site suggested that the Guardians could extend DeLauter for 7 years and start his major league clock on opening day. Great idea.
Do the same with Manzardo. Extend Josh Naylor. Fans would be thrilled and tickets would be bought.

Re: SPRING TRAINING 2017!
771Don't count on it!
DeL seems like a great talent; but he has had a recurring injury so long term deal at this point is risky
Not certain yet if Manzardo will be a "Wade Boggs" as has been suggested, or more of a slugger, and his defensive position is uncertain. Not ready to give him a deal yet
Naylor. Yes go for it. Add his brother, make it a family deal.

773after a hard to fathom 9-108 [one double, 2 homers] vs LHP in 2023 including 50 strikeouts, Arias in spring training is 1-7 [a double] with 2 strikeouts. Sample size too small to mean anything. I'm afraid.

Cleveland Guardians Spring Training Prospect Report 3/5/24
JUSTIN LADA
MAR 7
Game 12 - Cleveland Guardians 3, Milwaukee Brewers 3
STARTERS
Brayan Rocchio (SS): 1-3 -
Rocchio hasn’t collected a ton of hits this spring and his hit came later in the game against a fringe reliever, but at least it was a line drive. He had some quality at bats before the hit though, seeing a lot of pitches. Having professional at bats is part of the equation here to figure out who should start at SS.
Angel Martinez (3B): 1-3, 3B, RBI -
Martinez meanwhile can’t stop hitting. He laced a triple to left field as a left handed hitter. The Guardians and Stephen Vogt continue to say how impressive he’s been this spring.
Kyle Manzardo (1B): 1-3, K -
Manzardo just missed an opposite field homer in this one, though a ball that doesn’t get the extra push the air of Arizona in spring training probably is a normal fly out up in Cleveland or in cold weather. He at least singled later but also took a called strike three as well. I would expect Manzardo to remain in big league camp until near the end.
Chase DeLauter (RF): 1-2, RBI,BB, K -
DeLauter drew a walk off Brewers MLB starter Colin Rea, singled off up and down MLB reliever Joel Payamps, and was rung up on strikes in a tough at bat against Taylor Clarke, who Rocchio had his hit off of. DeLauter keeps playing late into games and getting starts. I’d be shocked if he made the opening day roster, but Cleveland is getting a long look at him everyday here, which bodes better for his chances to impact the roster later in the season.
NOTABLE RESERVES
Daniel Schneemann (CF): 0-1 -
No hits but Schneemann’s CF appearance makes him notable as a normal infielder who did play some OF last season.
ALSO PLAYED
Alexfri Planez (LF): 0-0 -
Keeps getting placed on the travel roster and getting in games, and give him credit, is getting hits. No ABs here though.
Ray Delgado (2B): 0-1
Jose Tena (SS): 0-1 -
I’d expect Tena’s playing time to decrease in the next two weeks as guys get built up and the team looks at Arias/Rocchio closer at SS.
Joe Naranjo (1B): 0-1, E
Dayan Frias (SS): 0-0
RELIEVERS
Trey Benton 0.1IP - Finished one out of Carlos Carrasco’s first inning of work. Does keep getting opportunities as a minor league callup.
Cade Smith 0.1IP -
Because of spring training rules, Carrasco came back out to throw some pitches next inning and then when he actually was done for the day, Smith finished that inning up as well.
Tim Herrin IP, 3K -
Faced a bunch of Brewers minor leaguers and laid waste to them as you’d hope.
Erik Sabrowski IP, BB, 3K -
Same as Herrin, except Sabrowski doesn’t have MLB experience or high octane stuff like he does, so a good performance here.

777Guardians roster for MLB Spring Breakout includes top prospects Chase DeLauter, Kyle Manzardo
Updated: Mar. 07, 2024, 1:40 p.m.|Published: Mar. 07, 2024, 1:22 p.m.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Guardians top prospects Chase DeLauter and Kyle Manzardo headline a roster of Cleveland’s most promising farmhands that will compete against Cincinnati Reds prospects on March 16 as part of Major League Baseball’s Spring Breakout showcase.
The game is part of MLB’s initiative to shine a spotlight on the future stars of the game. Sixteen matchups will take place between March 14-17 while major league teams are playing games in their Cactus and Grapefruit league stadiums.
DeLauter and Manzardo are already enjoying breakout spring performances at the plate, giving Guardians fans hope that their bats will soon be injecting much-needed thump in the lineup. DeLauter, a first-round pick in 2022 out of James Madison, is hitting .455 with a 1.356 OPS and two RBI in 11 Cactus League at-bats. Manzardo, acquired in July from Tampa Bay in the Aaron Civale trade, is batting .417 with a 1.033 OPS and three runs scored in 12 at-bats.
Both DeLauter and Manzardo starred in the Arizona Fall league, leading Peoria to the finals. Earlier this week they were ranked as the organization’s top two prospects according to MLB Pipeline.
Cleveland’s roster includes its No. 2 pick from last year’s draft, left-hander Alex Clemmey. In fact, the Guardians will have six lefty pitchers available including Clemmy and the organization’s No. 23 prospect, Parker Messick.
Joining Delauter in the outfield will be the club’s No. 6 prospect, Jaison Chourio, and playing alongside Manzardo on the infield will be No. 16 prospect Kahlil Watson, acquired from Miami last year in a trade for Josh Bell.
Catcher/first baseman Ralphy Velazquez, the club’s top pick out of high school last year and its current No. 5 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, did not make the roster.
Below are the players who will suit up for Cleveland during Spring Breakout.

778Guardians and A’s washed out as rain shortens Shane Bieber’s second spring start

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Guardians had just taken the lead in the top of the third inning Thursday at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Arizona. But steady rain washed out the rest of the game as play was suspended with Cleveland leading Oakland by a 2-1 score.
Guardians starter Shane Bieber allowed one run on two hits and struck out four in his two innings of work, allowing a leadoff single to Kyle McCann in the second and an RBI double to Brent Rooker that put the A’s in front.
But Ramon Laureano’s RBI double off Alex Wood in the third plated Juan Brito and Estevan Florial to give Cleveland the lead. Laureano entered the game with hits in his two previous starts. Florial, who walked in the first, has reached base in three of his last four games.
Bieber worked a clean inning in the first, striking out Zack Gelof and Ryan Noda to end the frame. He featured a changeup with two strikes that he was able to use effectively. Bieber said the outing and the elements gave him a chance to get feedback on a lot of different aspects of his game, including throwing through some adversity.
“I worked on a couple new pitches, didn’t show them too much, and got some really great feedback on those pitches in that execution as well,” Bieber said.
Bieber told reporters that he’s in a really good spot mentally right now. He described the offseason as his best in a long time from a routine aspect.
“I feel really grounded, excited for the turnover that we’ve had within this club that has kind of sparked a confidence and an energy not just in the clubhouse, but in guys specifically,” he said.
And Bieber said he feels a little bit of that confidence and energy as well.
“It’s exciting to be able to go out there and prove yourself each and every day, whether it’s in the backfield or on the mound today,” he said. “I feel really good and I’m not focused on anything too far ahead of me. I’m just focused on my development right now.”
Daniel Schneemann singled with two out in the second, but was thrown out trying to steal by Oakland catcher Tyler Soderstrom.
With the rain intensifying after Laureano’s double, manager Stephen Vogt and Oakland skipper Mark Kotsay met behind home plate, shook hands and called it a day.
Next:
The Guardians return to Goodyear Ballpark on Friday to host the White Sox in a game set to start at 3:05 p.m. EST. Right-hander Tanner Bibee (0-0, 10.80) will make his second spring start for Cleveland, while righty Erick Fedde (0-0, 4.50) will take the mound for Chicago. The game will air on WTAM 1100 AM.

779Shane Bieber talks leadership after dodging rain drops: Guardians spring training breakfast
Updated: Mar. 08, 2024, 1:19 p.m.|Published: Mar. 08, 2024, 9:40 a.m.
By Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Arizona has heat, high winds, dust storms and tumbleweed. Rain, not so much.
Rain, however, washed out the Guardians’ spring training game against the A’s on Thursday in Mesa, limiting Shane Bieber to two innings in his second start of the spring.
Bieber, who walked three in his Cactus League debut on March 2, looked more like Bieber on Thursday, striking out four while allowing one run on two hits. The rainout allowed him to reflect on his role as the veteran on a young rotation featuring three rookies from last year in Tanner Bibee, Logan Allen and Gavin Williams.
Not to mention Triston McKenzie, who was drafted a year before Bieber, but has been slowed by injuries.
“It’s awesome. It’s something I’ve embraced for the last couple of years,” Bieber told reporters in Mesa following the rainout. “But I don’t really have to stress about anything out of the ordinary. I kind of just am able to do my thing.
“Those guys are already so good at what they do. They’ve clearly established routines throughout the minor leagues and throughout their developmental process. It’s really just about them getting more comfortable, gaining more confidence, learning the ins and outs, the tips and tricks, and just how to be a professional, which they’ve already been so good at.”
Not so long ago Bieber was in the same position. He made his big league debut in 2018, learning from veterans Corey Kluber, Carlos Carrasco and Josh Tomlin. A year later he led the way for an influx of young starters including Aaron Civale and Zach Plesac.
Now Bieber is in his walk year and a candidate to be traded at the deadline.
“There’s no pressure on my end,” said Bieber. “I’ve just got to be me, be as supportive of a teammate as I possibly can be with those guys. But with everybody else, we got a young squad, young locker room, so it’s the same for everybody as it is for them.”
The Guardians were leading, 2-1, thanks to Ramon Laureano’s two-run double in the third when play was stopped. Laureano homered in his last start on Tuesday against Seattle.
Prospects on display
The Guardians will play the Reds on March 16 as part of MLB’s Spring Breakout Showcase. The game will feature the top prospects from each organization.
Outfielder Chase DeLauter and first baseman Kyle Manzardo, who have been impressive in big league camp this spring, are expected to play for the Guardians.
The game is part of MLB’s initiative to feature the future stars of the game. Sixteen matchups will take place between March 14-17 while major league teams are playing games in their Cactus and Grapefruit league stadiums.

780Guardians’ first roster cuts of spring training hardly unexpected
Updated: Mar. 08, 2024, 2:38 p.m.|Published: Mar. 08, 2024, 2:03 p.m.
By Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Sometimes spring training roster cuts can cause a stir in the locker room. Not so for the Guardians’ first two moves.
The team announced Friday that right-hander Daniel Espino (right shoulder) and outfielder George Valera (left hamstring) were optioned to Class AAA Columbus. Espino and Valera are on the 40-man roster, but will not be ready to play when the regular season opens on March 28.
Espino, Cleveland’s No. 1 pick in 2019, underwent surgery on his right shoulder capsule on May 3 and did not pitch last season. He is playing catch at 90 feet, but there is no timetable for him to return to game action.
Manager Stephen Vogt watched him play catch earlier in spring training and was encouraged by his progress.
Valera came to camp in the mix for an outfield job, but strained his left hamstring on Feb. 22 during a pop-up drill. He will be sidelined for at least four weeks.
This is the second consecutive spring that injuries have taken Valera out of outfield race. Last year he injured his surgically repaired right hand on a swing in February and missed the first two months of the season.
After he reported to Columbus in May, Valera, 23, strained his hamstring on May 20 and didn’t return to Columbus until June 27. Valera played 73 games for the Clippers last year.
Espino, 23, has thrown just 18 1/3 innings in the last two years.
