Not surprised to see Logan Allen returning toColumbus. Needs to be much more effficient. At worst he becomes a reliever, but I doubt that.

I-day Kelly returns; they claim he'll get some work this time, but they'll be clearing a spot forQuantrill so not so sure about that.
Unless they want to give Stephan a chance to work in AAA after a petty bad week.

Fry started in left and finished on the mound.
Quantrill from a stay on the DL and was no less awful than in his previous 2 starts which he seemed to blame on his injury.
Total for the last 3 starts:
11 2/3 exciting innings. 20 hits 7 walks That makes a WHIP of 2.30
20 earned runs that makes an ERA of 15.43
What more is there to say?

Allen wears out bullpen but at least pitches scoreless ball.
In my opinion, one more start for Q before the all star game and if he's not a roaring success, Allen comes back and he joins Plesac with the Clippers. they need some starting depth.

Roster moves:

Quantrill isn't simply awful, he is not fully recovered so he goes on the DL

Cody Morris is not fully stretched out but he comes back to Cleveland.

McKenzie moves to the 60 day IL

Unimpressive RHP Chris Vailmont acquired from the Orioles who DFAd him and sent to Columbus. Cash deal. Better price to pay than the dreadful Tobias Myers acquisition for Junior Caminero breakout hitter now with the Rays AA team.

Vailmont 26 year old 6-5 RHP
Major league career ERA 0.00 in 2/3 inning
5.02 ERA this year in AAA
5.38 ERA last year in AAA
4.89 ERA career total in the minors

2018 Miami drafted him in the 5th round
2019 part of a trade package to the Twins
2022 dfa'd by the Twins
signed by Orioles
2023 dra'd by Orioles
2023 Cleveland desparate for some pitching depth signs him

I wish him well in all his future endeavors

Here comes my Terry Pluto inspired pre Allstar game obvservations:

1. Pitching is the "strength" of the team, yet our big 5 has been limited to Bieber.
2. Bieber seems heaver this year, and he is getting fewer swings and misses, running up his pitch count.
3. Civale also seems to be heaver this year, but he is pitching like an ace (when healthy).
4. Clase does not seem to be mixing his pitches as much as last year.
5. De Los Santo looks great, so does Morgan.
6. Kwan seems to be bothered by something. I believe they tried to sign him long term and he hasn't yet. Curious. Manning last night suggests that teams are playing him shallower this year.
7. Gimenez is streaky, love to watch him when it is a good streaky.
8. Rosario is turning on his 2nd half hitting show.
9. Josh Naylor is locked in, can you imagine if he could run???
10. Straw needs to learn to bunt. With his speed it should produce results.
11. Arias needs to relocate. He seems to think more of himself than the team does. I had high hopes for him.
12. Not sure that Brennen needs to be platooned. Would love to see SpongeBob back but can't see him getting regular playing time.
13. Too soon to tell, but after watching Bo Naylor play last night he may have finally figured out that he is the man and it taking on that challenge.
14. All the rookie pitchers seem to be throwing too many pitches.
15. Love Freeman, and Fry seems OK. Gallagher also seems OK.
16. Jose is Jose. You know when he come up he gets fed off speed most of the time. His steal of home the against Chapman reminds me of Vic Power.
17. Quatrall? Who knows. I expected big things from him.
18. I expect to win the division, but not by as much as last year. The possible fly in the ointment is Detroit.
19. Now, lets get ready for Francona 2nd half magic.

Good comments!
Didn't see your opinion on trading Bieber: Terry says Yes, what does Uncle Dennis say?
You didn't comment on Josh Bell: have you signs to suggest we'll see a better second half?

I really miss McKenzie; expected him to really take himself to a new level this year. Unlike the 3 kids he and Bieber and Civale all could go deeper in games.
I thought Civale would be the odd man out of the rotation when the new wave arrived. I was wrong!

Civ, I meant to include this about Bell: when watching Naylor or Ramirez or Gimenez, swing and drive the ball, their arms are extended. When Bell swings, he looks like a tyrannosaurus Rex with his elbows almost stuck to his rib cage. I can’t really say that I’ve ever seen him really extend his arms and hit the ball. It’s been a big disappointment. Concerning Bieber, I think he not getting as many swings, and misses as in the past. Hate to say it but it might be time to move on.
