Guardians starting to answer spring training questions: The week in baseball

By Paul Hoynes

Updated: Mar. 04, 2023, 3:12 p.m.

CLEVELAND, Ohio --

The Guardians have been in spring training for almost three weeks. By Sunday they will have played 10 of their 32 scheduled exhibition games.

When the Guardians opened camp on Feb. 14, like most teams, they did so with a number of questions. There is still plenty of time to find the answers, but it’s never too early to see how the search is going.

How have right-handers Aaron Civale and Zach Plesac looked?

They struggled last year with injuries and performance, but the good thing right now is that they’re both healthy.

To date Civale has thrown only one inning in a Cactus League game, holding the White Sox scoreless on Wednesday. That was by design.

Plesac made his second start Friday, pitching himself into a one-out bases-loaded jam in the first inning against Milwaukee. Minor leaguer Jordan Jones relieved and induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Under spring training rules, Plesac was allowed to re-enter the game in the second and retired six straight batters. It was the best he’s looked this spring, but when the regular season starts he won’t be allowed to do that.

How about the sophomore jinx jumping on the backs of super rookies Steve Kwan and Oscar Gonzalez?

No sign of that so far. In the Cactus League opener on Feb. 25 against the Reds, Kwan singled through the middle in his first two at-bats. Gonzalez had only one hit in his first three games, but there are no red flags.

What about Gold Glove center fielder Myles Straw bouncing back from a disappointing season at the plate?

We’ll have to wait on this one. Straw tweaked his right knee training before the start of camp and was held out of games until Friday. He went 0 for 2 with a walk. Hitting coach Chris Valaika was happy with the work Straw did in the offseason.

How have free agent additions Josh Bell and Mike Zunino looked?

Bell has one hit in nine at-bats through Friday. But the one hit was memorable, a long two-run homer off the roof of the party deck in right field at Goodyear Ballpark on Feb. 28 against the Kansas City’s Jordan Lyles.

Zunino, who caught just 36 games last year with the Rays because of surgery on his left arm, has already appeared in four games this spring. He’s healthy and the pitchers like throwing to him.

“He’s going to be a strength for us,” said manager Terry Francona.

How has Jose Ramirez looked after having surgery on his right thumb in November?

Besides being miffed that the pitch clock is cutting into his walk-up music, and thus his time to concentrate on his at-bat, Ramirez is doing fine.

He didn’t play for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic to continue rehabbing his right thumb. Through Friday he has played in four of Cleveland’s eight games, hitting .364 (4 for 11) with two RBI.

Ramirez, one of baseball’s best baserunners, was asked if the larger bases and shorter distances between first and second and second and third would help him steal more bases. Ramirez said he didn’t think so, but that has not stopped him from already stealing two bases.

After having 17 rookies make their debuts last year, do the Guardians have anyone else to help this year?

Outfielder George Valera and right-hander Daniel Espino would certainly be possibilities except for injuries. Valera has been sidelined with a sore right wrist after taking an awkward swing on Feb. 28. He’s recovering from surgery on his right hand in December. Espino has been shutdown with a strained rotator cuff in his right shoulder and a tear in the anterior capsule of the shoulder.

But the pipeline isn’t empty. Infielders Brayan Rocchio, Angel Martinez and Jose Tena are in camp. So are lefties Logan Allen and Tim Herrin. Right-hander Gavin Williams is only a phone call away.

What about how James Karinchak will handle the pitch clock because of his pre-pitch routine?

That hasn’t been a problem in his first two appearances of the spring.

Karinchak, in fact, was charged with a ball and it wasn’t his fault. Against Texas on Feb. 28, Karinchak asked for a new ball while pitching the third inning. The pitch clock should have reset, but it kept running and Karinchak was charged with a ball because the clock expired. It turned out the plate umpire made a mistake by not re-setting the clock.

Has there been any talk of contract extensions this spring?

The Guardians usually wait until the last moment of camp before announcing extensions. For evidence see last year’s negotiations with Ramirez.

Undoubtedly the front office has approached some players, but right now all is quiet. It should be noted that Shane Bieber and Kwan have told reporters that they’d be willing to listen on possible extensions.

Who has been the biggest spring training surprise so far?

The clubhouse leader has to be Roman Quinn. He has three hits and they’ve all gone for home runs. If you’re in camp on a non-roster contract, that’s the way to get noticed.

Micah Pries, a minor leaguer invited to big league camp, doubled, tripled and homered in the Guards first three games. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Pries, a left-handed hitter, batted .266 (119 for 448) with 29 doubles, five triples and 18 homers last year at Class AA Akron.

Right-hander Hunter Gaddis, 6-6 and 250, has looked good early. He’s struck out six in 4 1/3 innings while posting a 2.08 ERA.

Have any concerns surfaced?

Lefty Sam Hentges, who had a big season out of the pen last year, has been shutdown with a sore pitching shoulder. Cody Morris, another bullpen possibility, is still recovering from a right lat injury. Nick Sandlin, who tore the terres major muscle in his right shoulder in the postseason last year, is said to be healthy, but he hasn’t pitched in a game yet this spring.

Depending how long Hentges is out, the pen is going to need another late-inning arm.

Did he go to another position in the field? Only time I've heard of pitcher re-entry in professional ball.

First cuts must be coming soon.

Tired of games filled with minor leaguers.

No Seagull,
Plesac did not field another position.

Shane Bieber throws 3 scoreless innings as Guardians, A’s play to 4-4 tie

By Paul Hoynes

CLEVELAND, Ohio --

Shane Bieber pitched three scoreless innings Saturday as the Guardians and A’s played to a 4-4 tie in nine innings at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona.

Bieber became the first Guardians pitcher to go three innings this spring. He held the A’s to one hit, while striking out two.

In two starts this spring, Bieber has thrown five scoreless innings.

Oakland took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on a three-run homer by Esteury Ruiz. Trevor Stephan, making his first appearance of the spring, started the fifth and struggled.

Stephan allowed a leadoff single to Brent Rooker, retired Yohel Puzo on a nice running catch near the wall in right field by Oscar Gonzalez, but walked Denzel Clarke to bring Ruiz to the plate.

Gonzalez bailed out Stephan again with a good catch after the homer, but he walked the next two batters to be replaced by Caleb Simpson, who loaded the bases with another walk before ending the inning.

Micah Pries pulled the Guardians into a 3-3 tie with a two-run homer in the sixth. Gabriel Arias reached on a two-out error to bring Pries to the plate. It was the second homer of the spring for Pries, who hit 18 homers at Class AA Akron last year.

Cal Stevenson gave the A’s a 4-3 lead in the seventh with a single off Konnor Pilkington. Pablo Reyes opened the inning with a double and went to third on a wild pitch.

It was Pilkington’s second inning of work. In the fifth he pitched around a two-out triple to keep the score tied.

The Guardians tied it at 4-4 in the eighth when Chris Roller scored on a wild pitch from third. Roller singled and went to third on double by Bo Naylor.

Cleveland missed a chance to take the lead in the ninth. Brayan Rocchio reached on an error to start the inning. Bryan Lavastida singled Rocchio to third, but the next three Guardians were retired in order.

Michael Kelly pitched the ninth for Guardians. He allowed a two-out single, but kept them from scoring. He opened the ninth with a strikeout when Kevin Smitgh was charged with a third strike for a pitch clock violation.

Gonzalez gave Cleveland a 1-0 lead with a single off Adam Oller in the fourth. Will Brennan opened the inning with a double off the wall in center field.

This was a split-squad team for the A’s, who were also playing in Las Vegas.

Cleveland is 4-4-1 this spring.

Next: The Guardians play Arizona on Sunday with Triston McKenzie making his second start of the spring. Lefty Madison Bumgarner is scheduled to start for the Diamondbacks at 3:05 p.m. ET at Goodyear Ballpark.

Eli Morgan, Joey Cantillo, Phillip Diehl, Logan Allen, Dusten Knight and Caleb Barager are also scheduled to pitch for Cleveland. Former Cleveland reliever Zach McAllister is one of the pitchers scheduled to work for the Giants.

I can't understand why Meibrys Viloria isn't getting more playing time.
Appearance here. Appearance there.
This was the time to show Francona and the coaching staff if he has the right stuff.
I was hoping Viloria would be the backup catcher.

Code: Select all

G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
5 8 2 5 2 0 0 1 2 0 0 0 .625 .700 .875 1.575
Pretty impressive numbers to date.
Another hit and another rbi in a pinch hitting roll in today's game.
His hit and rbi came in the 9th.

Viloria picked up right where he left off this winter playing in Columbia for Cartegena.

Well, it's off to the WBC representing Columbia.
Dayan Frias will be accompanying him.

Dayan also had an impressive showing for the Vaqueros in Columbia this winter.
Frias made the all-star team representing Columbia in the Caribbean Series.

Neither got much of an opportunity to play this spring.
I was pretty disappointed with the lack of playing time for both.

Good Luck fellas!

Triston McKenzie’s control falters in Guardians’ 6-4 loss to Arizona

By Paul Hoynes

Updated: Mar. 05, 2023, 5:59 p.m.|

CLEVELAND, Ohio --

Triston McKenzie struggled with his control on Sunday in his second start of the Cactus League season as the Guardians lost to Arizona, 6-4, at Goodyear Ballpark.

McKenzie stranded two runners in the first as the Guardians (4-5-1) took a 1-0 lead off Madison Bumgarner on Josh Bell’s two-out double. McKenzie, however, allowed three two-out runs in the second.

Geraldo Perdomo blooped a single to center to score Diego Castillo from second. Corbin Carroll worked McKenzie for a walk before Alex Thomas tripled past a diving Steven Kwan in left field to make it 3-1.

McKenzie, removed after the triple, walked three batters in 1 2/3 innings. Two of the walks scored. He also struck out four batters and allowed three hits.

Cleveland made it 3-2 in the second when first baseman David Fry scored from third when Kwan lined a bases-loaded shot off the glove off first baseman Seth Beer. Kwan didn’t receive credit for a hit because Myles Straw was forced at second.

Arizona made it 5-2 with two runs in the fourth off Peyton Battenfield. Carroll had an RBI double and took third on a throwing error by Fry. Thomas delivered Carroll with a sacrifice fly.

Jose Ramirez’s sacrifice fly in the fifth made it 5-3. Straw opened the inning with a walk, moved to second on Kwan’s single and took third on a fly ball to right by Amed Rosario.

The teams exchanged runs in the ninth. Phillips Evans pushed Arizona’s lead to 6-3 with a sacrifice fly off Caleb Barager. Meibrys Viloria scored Petey Halpin with a two-out single for Cleveland’s final run.

Pitch clock violation: Straw started the fifth with a 1-0 count when Pete Solomon was called for a pitch clock violation. He turned that into a four-pitch walk and a run.

That’s the idea: In the first, Ramirez walked and scored from first on a double by Bell. Ramirez opened the third with a single and added a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

When the Guardians signed Bell over the winter, it was with the idea that he’d spend much of the season driving in Ramirez. In case you’re interested, Ramirez’s surgically-repaired right thumb seems fine. He’s hitting .417 (5 for 12) with three RBI this spring.

Bounce back: Rookie lefty Logan Allen didn’t make it out of the first inning on Feb. 28 against Seattle in his first Cactus League start. He allowed four runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.

On Sunday he came out of the bullpen and pitched two scoreless innings. He pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth. He retired three of the four hitters he faced in the sixth.

Allen did walk three batters.

Walk this way: Guardians infielder Juan Brito increased his MLB-leading walk total to eight in the eighth inning.

Next: Right-hander Aaron Civale will make his second Cactus League start on Monday when the Guardians travel to Tempe, Arizona to play the Angels at 3:05 p.m. ET. Right-hander Griffin Canning will start for the Angels.

Closer Emmanuel Clase, in his first appearance of the spring, is scheduled to follow Civale to the mound. Xzavion Curry, Tim Herrin, Cade Smith, Jason Bilous, Luis Oviedo and Nick Mikolajchak are also available.

Injuries & Moves: Valera, Morris

March 6th, 2023

OF George Valera (right wrist)

Expected return: TBD
Valera, who had offseason hamate bone surgery, has been undergoing treatment after being removed from a Feb. 28 game against the Royals mid at-bat with right wrist discomfort. He is doing light bat-handling exercises. Cleveland has not provided a timetable for his return. (Last updated: March 6)

RHP Cody Morris (right teres major soreness)

Expected return: TBD
Morris, who has dealt with shoulder and back problems over the last few years, has played catch up to 105 feet and was scheduled to begin work with a weighted ball on March 6. Manager Terry Francona said the hope is to get Morris back on a mound by the middle of next week. Morris got a late start to the 2022 season due to lat issues, limiting him to a bullpen role at the end of the year. (Last updated: March 6)

LHP Sam Hentges (left shoulder inflammation)

Expected return: Week to week
Manager Terry Francona said that after Hentges pitched a couple of days ago, the lefty felt as though his shoulder wasn't "bouncing back" like he wanted it to. Further imaging revealed some inflammation around the ligaments in his throwing shoulder. Francona said that Hentges' return timetable will be evaluated week to week. (Last updated: March 1)

RHP Enyel De Los Santos (left hamstring tightness)

Expected return: TBD
De Los Santos tweaked his left hamstring before coming into camp, but he's been testing pretty well during the early weeks of camp. Francona said if he continues down this path, he'll soon be joining the rest of the pitchers in regular workouts. (Last updated: Feb. 25)

CF Myles Straw (right knee soreness)

Expected return: TBD
Francona said Straw felt some discomfort in his knee after running on concrete prior to reporting for camp. But the team is confident Straw won't be too far behind the rest of his teammates in preparing for Opening Day and he's not expected to miss any time. (Last updated: Feb. 25)

The WBC will not be playing under the new rules.
I don't know if the WBC will be playing under spring training rules while they are in Arizona and Florida.

Zach Plesac throws four scoreless innings, Jose Ramirez homers in Guardians’ 6-0 win over Mexico

By Paul Hoynes

Updated: Mar. 08, 2023, 6:27 p.m.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- When Jose Ramirez is hitting, all is right in the Guardians’ world. It doesn’t hurt when right-hander Zach Plesac is on his game as well.

Ramirez drove in three runs Wednesday with a homer and double and Plesac pitched four scoreless innings to lead the Guardians to a 6-0 win over Team Mexico at Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Arizona.

The Guardians took a 2-0 lead in the first inning off Houston’s Jose Urquidy. Ramirez supplied both runs with a two-run homer to right field, his first of the spring.

Ramirez added a run-scoring double in the fifth for a 5-0 lead. Ramirez is hitting .467 (7 for 15) with one homer and six RBI in Cactus League play.

Plesac, who allowed five runs in his first spring start, became the first Cleveland pitcher this spring to pitch four innings. He allowed just one run and two walks.

“I thought Zach was good,” said manager Terry Francona. “We sent him out for a fourth inning to get some work. That’s a good sign.”

The bullpen followed Plesac’s four scoreless innings with five of their own to complete the five-hitter. James Karinchak, Trevor Stephan, Nick Sandlin, Enyel De Los Santos and Michael Kelly threw an inning each. Sandlin and De Los Santos were making their first appearances of the spring.

“Hopefully, they’ll take their regular turns the rest of the way out,” said Francona.

Mexico was preparing for the World Baseball Classic. They will start play Saturday at Chase Field in Phoenix.

The Guardians improved to 5-6-1 this spring.

Gabriel Arias hit his first homer of the spring to make it 3-0 in the second. Doubles by Steven Kwan and Ramirez made it 5-0 in the fifth. Mexico’s center fielder Alek Thomas lost Kwan’s ball in the sun.

Four by four: Plesac’s four scoreless innings lowered his ERA from 11.26 to 5.62. He has not allowed a run in his last six innings.

Power pals: Ramirez and Arias homered in the first and second innings, respectively, for a 3-0 lead. They were the first homers of the spring for both players.

Old friends: Former Indians players Jacob Cruz, Tony Perezchica and Ever Magallanes are on Mexico’s coaching staff.

Old-time baseball: MLB’s new rules were not enforced Wednesday when the Guardians played Mexico because they will not be used in the World Baseball Classic.

Wheels up: Amed Rosario, Brayan Rocchio and Bryan Lavastida stole bases Wednesday. Rosario stole second in the first and came around to score on Ramirez’s homer. Lavastida stole second in the sixth, while Rocchio stole second in the seventh.

First timers: Right-handers Sandlin and De Los Santos made their first appearances of the Cactus League season Wednesday. Sandlin (right shoulder) pitched into trouble and out of trouble in the seventh inning. He loaded the bases with two outs but struck out Jose Cardona to end the inning.

De Los Santos, slowed by a strained hamstring, allowed a leadoff double in the eighth, but kept Mexico off the board. Micah Pries helped him out with a nice catch in deep right field against Rowdy Tellez.

The enemy within: Cleveland minor leaguer Jamie Arias-Bautista faced the Guardians in the seventh inning for Venezuela. He allowed a single to Tyler Freeman to load the bases, but retired the next two batters to end the inning.

Swing away: Rosario and Ramirez led Cleveland’s 11-hit attack with two hits each.

Next: RHP Hunter Gaddis will start against the Padres on Thursday at Goodyear Ballpark. Game time is 3:05 p.m. ET. Shane Bieber is scheduled to pitch a B game against the Padres in Peoria, Arizona on Thursday morning.

Emmanuel Clase, Konnor Pilkington and Tim Herrin are among the pitchers scheduled to follow Gaddis. Eli Morgan, Phillip Diehl and Dusten Knight are scheduled to follow Bieber.
