The Indios de Mayagüez and Gigantes de Carolina meet after 16 years of the Final Series of Puerto Rican professional baseball

by LBPRC Press

January 17, 2023

San Juan, Puerto Rico (Tuesday, January 17, 2023) –

The coronation dance now has its official partner. The Indios de Mayagüez and Gigantes de Carolina are the two teams that have reached the final stretch of the 2022-2023 season of the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (LBPRC).

The last time these teams faced each other for the national championship was in the 2004-2005 campaign where precisely Max "Mako" Oliveras got the championship commanding the Indios.

In the next two seasons (2005-2006 and 2006-2007) the Carolinian team won the national tournament consecutively, being the only two championships held by the franchise.

After the action ended yesterday where the Giants got second place in the final phase, both finalist teams strengthened themselves for the start of this stage. Carolina opted for Luis Leroy Cruz – left-handed pitcher for the Santurce Cangrejeros – while Mayagüez chose the right-handed Dereck Rodríguez who wore the colors of the Criollos de Caguas this season.

Similarly, the LBPRC and its tournament director – Carlos Berroa – confirmed the use of the replay challenge in the Final Series starting today at the Roberto Clemente Walker stadium.

Edwin García sealed brilliant comeback for Magallanes in Valencia

Magallanes overcame a seven-race deficit and added their fourth consecutive victory with an 11-10

By Yelimar Rquena

January 18, 2023

The soul of a champion is never be underestimated. Navegantes del Magallanes came back from a seven-run deficit to beat the Tigres de Aragua 11-10 on Tuesday and thus add their seventh Round Robin victory.

At the José Bernardo Pérez in Valencia, to the sound of “yes we can”, the Turks won their fourth consecutive victory and tied Tiburones de la Guaira for second place with a 7-6 record. They are only one game behind the leader Leones del Caracas.

For the second night in a row, Edwin García capped off the Navagantes come back, this time with a single to left field that brought home Rayder Ascanio's with the winning run. It was the eighth run that the Navegantes scored between the eighth and ninth innings.

"Each game for us is a final... We are not going to give up, we are going to keep fighting," said Edwin García at the end of the game.

Tigers ambush

In the midst of the intense rivalry that exists between Tigres and Magallanes, and with everything that is at stake right now, this Tuesday's game was heart-stopping.

The Tigers went ahead convincingly with a five-run run in the fourth inning, combining hits from Carlos Duran, Henry Rodríguez and Alexi Amarista. Three of those runs were off the starter Felix Doubront and the other two foff of Ángel Acevedo.

The Tigers added one more in the top of the fifth on a double by Johan López. And for the first two thirds of the game, Magallanes could only score two runs, both driven in by Alberth Martínez.

Runs left and right

Aragua took advantage of the blunders the Magallanes relief pitchers and scored another four runs between the seventh and eighth innngs to take the lead 10-3.

Aragua took advantage of the blunders of the electric relay and made another four lines between the seventh and eighth stages to take the lead 10-3.

impressive comeback

Despite the huge difference, a good part of the fans stayed in the stadium cheering on the defending champion. And it worked.

A double from the inspired Alberth Martínez batted in the first of six runs that put the game difference at one (10-9). Rayder Ascanio, Edwin García, Rainel Rosario and David Rodríguez were all part of that rally, all with singles.

After Anthony Vizcaya shut out the Tigers in the ninth, Magallanes did what seemed impossible.

Alberth Martínez reached base again and after two outs, with a drive that hit the wall and became a triple. Edwin García sealed the comeback.

The entire team jumped onto the field to celebrate, while they were cheered on by their fans.

Leones 8-5, Tiburones 7-6, Navegantes 7-6, Tigres 6-7, Cardenales 4-8

Leones made the house respect and retakes first place

In a perfect 4-4 night, Ali Castillo was the spark plug of the capital's offense

By Yelimar Requena

January 17, 2023

With timely hitting and capitalizing on the flickering of rival pitching, Leones del Caracas defeated Tiburones de La Guaira 7-3 on Tuesday to retake first place and take advantage in their desire to advance to the final.

In the UCV park, before more than 15,000 fans, the Lions added their eighth Round Robin victory and took a game advantage over the Sharks, now with 7-6.

forceful comeback

The Sharks went ahead with a run in the first inning. And, before the response of Leones -who tied the game in that same episode-, they returned to take advantage in the third inning on a solo home run by Franklin Barreto.

However, the Lions found the fall of the starter Ricardo Pinto and took off on the scoreboard.

With a fly ball by Jhonny Pereda and a deflected pitch by the pitcher, Caracas went up 3-2 in the fourth inning. The following inning Oswaldo Arcia, Harold Castro and Niko Vásquez combined to drive in another four runs and put the game on the ice 7-2.

Sharks could barely react with a run in the eighth after a double by Wilson Garcia. And, of course, that was not enough to stop the Lions.

Ali Castillo had a perfect 4-4 night with a walk and two runs scored to raise his average to .418. Oswaldo Arcia and Niko Vásquez, for their part, stood out with two RBIs each.

The victory went to Jhoulys Chacín (2-1) who excelled with 6.0 innings of just two runs, in which he did not issue any walks and struck out four to improve his ERA to 4.50. For his part, after a relief of an inning and a third with a run, José Mujica scored the save.

The setback went to Ricardo Pinto (0-2), who ended up allowing six runs in four and two-thirds innings.

More ON Ali Castillo

Image

Ali Castillo is a replacement player plucked from the The Zulia Aguilas team after they were eliminated from the tournament.

It should be noted that it was not enough for Alí Castillo to just be the bat leader, leader during the regular season phase but he leads the current Round Robin in hits (23), runs scored (16), and also has the second most number of doubles (5) and is third in OBP (.468).

Now, in his last four games in the Caracas Leones uniform, the native of Maracaibo is averaging .563 (9-for-16) with a double, six runs scored and an OPS of 1.236, undoubtedly being an extremely valuable addition to the Lions offense on this stretch of the round robin finale.

In the same way, his performance in this postseason has not only shown offensively, but also defensively, since on Tuesday he starred in two very good plays at second base, which most likely prevented runs against for his team.

In the fourth, also after two outs, Dairon Blanco walked, stole second and scored on Sergio Alcántara's single to left field, who reached third on a throw error by outfielder Ramón Flores. But José Herrera flied out to left field.

Historic full house at the 11 de Noviembre Stadium- Abel Leal Díaz came to see Monteria - Cartegena

The first game of the championship series had an unprecedented crowd in the last 20 years

As in past times, the November Colosseum, now also called Abel Leal, was bursting at the seams in the first game of the grand final of the Colombian Professional Baseball League.

The doors of the stadium opened at 5:00 PM, where a large number of people came to receive their tickets, because most bought them online.

“The truth was that the stadium had not been seen in this way for a long time, people arrived early, it made me remember how full it was when Conastil vs Colpuertos played, that the doors had to be opened from 10 in the morning because the game started at 2 in the afternoon..” Pedro Jiménez, a fan of the Tigres team, told us.

Ignacia Rodriguez, a vendor of fried food on the outskirts of the stadium, expressed her joy at seeing that she was able to sell all the products and bring some money to her home: "The truth is, we are happy, I sold everything, especially in this month of January, which is quite difficult. , I can have for my children's tuition and buy the supplies..." she said.

Laying of the first stone in 1947

For professor Fredy Goyeneche with a doctorate in economics, and a baseball fan, he told us that... yesterday was something glorious, it's a pity that the team lost but the impact and the flow of money yesterday helps a little to the battered economy of these sectors of the city. Seeing that the fried food vendors, the soda vendor, in short, manage to get a little money in this month of January, which is quite a difficult month, fills us with satisfaction, because this is the Cartagena that suffers and manages to get something to eat through informality, and this provides food security, at least for several days to several families.

What happened yesterday, despite some skirmishes and logistical failures, the packed stadium confirms that the fans of hot ball in Cartagena are alive.

<

[ Note Worth: After three weeks of being missing in action, we have a Meibrys Viloria sighting in the Cartegena lineup. Viloria was the starting catcher, batted second in the lineup, and finished the game going 2-4 with 2 runs scored, 4 batted in with a walk. Villora also had a solo homer in the first. ]

By Jaime A. Chavez Rivera

1/19/2023

It smells like a sweep, Federales de Chiriquí will have the opportunity to become champion, but to lift the Probeis title in the current tournament they will have to beat Atlánticos when they face each other today at Rod Carew Stadium at 7:00 pm in the third game of the Final Series.

The team led by José Mayorga won the first two games of the Final Series, the first by a score of 6-5 and in the last one he prevailed by a 4-0 shutout, if they come out unscathed today they would win the Probeis Final Series by sweep against Atlantic Bocas del Toro and Colon.

The current Final Series of Probeis is played to the best of 5 games and since the team from "Valle de la Luna " has a 2-0 advantage, it only needs a victory to be crowned.

In the first two games of the Final Series, the one who stood out on the offensive of the Federales de Chiriquí was the catcher Erasmo Caballero who has hit at the right moments, in the first game he hit 1-4 a double, batted in three runs and scored once.

In the second game, Caballero hit another double, drove in three runs and finished the game on offense again 1-4.

"There is one game left for the title, but we have to keep fighting, we have a good rival in Atlánticos ," warned Caballero.

"You have to continue in the war, fighting pitch by pitch, game by game," said the Chiricano, who was out from the team for a period of a week due to a wrist sprain in his hand, but added that he feels totally recovered.

Caballero thanked the team pilot José Mayorga for his confidence, who reminded him that he must "take good turns (pitches)."

"For the third game of the Final Series, you have to go out and play hard, to give 100% and come out with the win," said Caballero.

Cornered with only one victory in four outings, Carlos Martí's Centauros reached their second victory and forced their rivals to travel to Bayamo to stage the championship-defining battle there.

One inning later, the visitors continued the assault with four more runs, to the account of reliefers Elder Nodal, Adrián Sosa and Remberto Barreto, the latter disrespectfully greeted by Rafael Viñales with his 100th home run in the National Series, this one with two runners on base.

In the sixth they added another on a solo shot by Yordanys Alarcón (his second of the game) to complete his fourth rbi of the game, and an inning later Alexquemer Sánchez also dispatched his second homer with bases empty.

The coup de grace came in the seventh inning with a six-run attack where Viñales hit another home run to reach six RBIs in the game, this one against a delivery from left-handed Mailon Cruz.

The warriors of Portuarios fought and threatened to mutiny on several occasions, but it was not a day for surprises in these lands.

For the winners, Guillermo Avilés also hit a home run, and for the losers, Oscar Valdés and Roberto Acevedo hit homers, all with a teammate on board.

César García scored the victory with a 5.1 innings where he allowed five earned runs, gave up no walks and only one strikeout.
