COMPLETION OF SATURDAY'S SUSPENDED 11-11 GAME

Portuarios do not believe in favorites and struck first in the championship series of the Elite League

The incredible warriors of Portuarios defeated Agricultores by a score of 13-11, in the first game of the finals of the Elite League of Cuban Baseball

By BORIS LUIS CABRERA

JANUARY 15, 2023 11:01:11

The incredible warriors of Portuarios defeated the Agricultores by a score of 13-11, in the first game of the finals of the Elite League of Cuban Baseball, sealed by darkness the previous day with a tie at 11-11.

The Portuarios led by the fiery Michael González, who have built beachhead in all ports where they disembark, do not care about the rival or the place of the fight, and this time they made no exception against the best team in the championship season, entrenched in their home field of the Barbados Martyrs.

This Sunday with the tiebreaker rule in effect in the tenth inning, the Portuarios scored a pair of runs for the victory.

A single by Lázaro Martínez (his fifth of the game), batted in one run off of reliever and loser Keniel Ferraz and a walk from lefty Miguel Paradelo forced in the second.

Yesterday, Saturday, a rally of five runs the first inning sent starter César García to the showers as the Portuarios took the early lead.

However, Carlos Martí's Agricultores, supported by home runs from Guillermo Avilés, Rafael Viñales, and Andrés de la Cruz, the latter overwhelmed on offense, did not easily give up their home field advantage and got involved in a duel of ups and downs where they failed on defense and their relievers couldn't get the missions done.

Twice the Portuarios had to come from behind in the middle of the Agricultores bombardment that did not let up, while they saw their starter José Ignacio Bermúdez and relievers Marlon Vega, Juan Xavier Peñalver, Andy Vargas and Elder Nodal explode.

Key to game was Pedro Álvarez bases loaded hit that scored three runs to tie the game at 11-11 and a ruthless offense that connected for 18 hits throughout the afternoon.

A controversial call of an out at home in the bottom of the ninth inning, just before the last ray of sun hid behind the mountains, gave life to the Portuarios, who, in the morning ended up defeating the Agricultores.

The game was suspended in the tenth inning as darkness fell on the stadium,

The fiery Álvarez asked for the ball again on this day and was in charge of getting the last three outs in the tenth inning to put his team ahead in this final 1-0 as they achieved their first win of the series.

Portuarios undefeated in the Elite League final!

Few could have imagined it, but the Portuarios defeated Agricultores again this Sunday to put the final playoff of the Elite Cuban Baseball League 2-0

By BORIS LUIS CABRERA

Few could have imagined it, but the Portuarios defeated Agricultores again this Sunday to put the final playoff of the Cuban Baseball Elite League 2-0 , before the surprised gaze of their own faithful at the Mártires de Barbados field in Bayamo.

Portuarios did not let their guard down when their rivals scored a trio of runs in the first inning but scored enough runs to beat them 4-3.

Homers by Yosvani Alarcón and Rafael Viñales were mixed with an error as the Agricultores opened the scoring early, but that would be all the offensive production for the hosts in the game.

We are facing a good rival, but we came inspired, the team's ego is very high, said the Portuarios manager at the press conference after the game.

The start of the tournament was not good, but I always instilled combativeness in the boys and told them that the results had to come, he added.

Portuarios register a couple of runs in the second inning and manufactured the two that decided the game at the top of the fifth.

I never lost confidence, my manager always gave the ball to me and I was able to hang in until the sixth inning, declared the starting pitcher Yadián Martínez who, in six innings, spaced five hits for the win.

Pitcher Andy Vargas, in relief, went 3.1 innings giving one hit to score the save.

For the winners, Roberto Acevedo with two hits and an RBI, Yasiel Santoya 2-4 and Jorge Enrique Alomá and Rangel Ramos, both with RBI singles stood out.

Leandro Martínez charged with the loss giving up all the runs in 4.2 innings of work, and Yoel Mogena, in relief, went 4.1 innings without allowing a hit, but his offense never showed up.

They don't hit every day, we are missing a bit of closing the defense because when it fails, spirits drop a bit. We are going to Mayabeque to produce runs, which is what we know how to do, said Rafael Viñales, who went 2-4 in the game.

Ángel Sánchez will pitch for the Agricultores and Raymond Figueredo will do it for the Portuarios.

Licey takes a 2-1 lead in the finals with a 1-0 shutout of Estrellas

Esmil Rogers led the blue pitching and Sergio Alcántara batted in the winning run

By EDITORIAL LIDOM

1/15/23

Santo Domingo .

Great pitching by Esmil Rogers and an RBI double by Sergio Alcántara was the combination that the Tigres del Licey needed to beat the Estrellas Orientales 1-0 and take a 2-1 lead in this final series.

Alcántara found Mel Rojas Jr. at second base, who reached on Gustavo Núñez's error and then moved to second on Dairon Blanco's ground ball, from pitcher to first. Then came the double by the Licey shortstop, which was his first hit in this final.

Rogers (1-0, 0.00) pitched six four-hit, two-walk, four-strikeout innings and four other teammates completed his work. His rival, Domingo Robles, pitched three innings and two thirds (0-1, 0.00) of one unearned run to take the loss.

Oliver Ortega, Jonathan Aro, Jean Carlos Mejía and Jairo Asencio completed the work of Rogers. Only Ortega allowed a hit in a seventh inning in which the Stars put runners on second and first with two outs, but without the opportune hit.

Asencio worked for the first time in this final, since the first game was a defeat for his team and the second was won openly at Tetelo Vargas.

This Monday is an off day and returns next Tuesday when it moves to the Tetelo Varga Stadium for the fourth game seven game series.

The Tigers had a couple of chances to score, especially in the third when they had Emilio Bonifacio on third with just one out, but Robles kept his composure to dominate Ronny Mauricio and Jorge Alfaro.

The Stars also squandered scoring chances by putting runners in scoring position, but the opportune drive never came.

The Tigers are two wins away from the championship.

Federales take advantage in the Final Series of Probeis with a 6-5 win.

By Angel Valdes

January 17, 2023

In a game that restarted from the bottom of the second inning with the score 2-1 in favor of Federales when it was stopped due to rain, it was once again the Federales who would score one more in that inning to take a 3-1 lead. Then in the third inning they would score two more and in the fifth they would add another for their sixth run.

The Atlantics, who had scored their first run in the first inning, mounted a four-run rally in the sixth inning and were threatening to tie the score, but the good defense of the Federales prevented it, they came close to tying the game again in the eighth inning, but once again the Federales managed to resolve defensively and preserve the victory.

The best offensive player for the Federales was Erasmo Caballero who batted 1-4 with a double, three RBIs and one scored; Ariel Sandoval 1-3, a double, an RBI and a run scored; Erick Castillo 2-3, two runs scored and Michael Wielansky 1-3 with an RBI.

For the Atlantic, Joshwan Wright 1-33 with a double and two RBIs; Parker Bates 1-4 with an RBI; Saúl Garza 2-5 with an RBI and José Caballero 0-3 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk.

Severino Gónzalez, the fourth pitcher used by the Federales, was the game winner and the save went to David Richardson. Charged with the defeat by the Atlantic, Juan Jaime.

This Tuesday, January 17 from 7:00 pm is the second game of the Final Series of Probeis between Federales and Atlánticos, where the Federales will seek to expand their advantage and get even closer to winning the championship, while the Atlánticos will try to tie the Final Series. The winner of Probeis will represent Panama in the Caribbean Series in February in Venezuela

Agricultores come back in San Michael

They defeated the Portuarios 14-9 to achieve their first victory in the grand final of the Elite Cuban Baseball League

BORIS LUIS CABRERA

January 17, 2023

The Agricultores invaded the San José de Las Lajas stadium, and defeated the Portuarios 14-9 to achieve their first victory in the grand final of the Cuban Baseball Elite League.

After falling twice at their home field of the Mártires de Barbados, the Agricultores deployed an attack of 17 hits.

The visitors made their intentions clear from the very first inning when Rafael Viñales homered off of starter Raymond Figueredo with two on base.

A solo home run by Lázaro Martínez in the bottom of that inning left a clear message that their opponents were going to fight until the end.

In the fourth inning came the onslaught. A six-run rally saw the departure of starter Ángel Sánchez and reliever Yaser Luis Labrada.

A home run by Yasiel Santoya with one on board and another by Alexander Pozo were shots that drove the stands crazy.

The Agricultores did not surrender and with a couple of scores in the fifth against Figueredo one of them on a home run by Yordanys Alarcón cut into the lead.

Three more in the sixth against Pedro Álvarez's tied the game.

One more in the seventh inning gave them the advantage.

Then came the fifth home run of the game, this one coming off Roberto Acevedo to tie the score again.

With balls easily disappearing over the fence. Guillermo Avilés, a man who had looked unfocused by dropping two fly balls and showing little grit on the bases, took it out of the park with one on base against Marlon Vega, to give his team the defining advantage.

In the ninth homer number seven of the game, this one by Yosvani Alarcón with two runners on the bags increased the lead.

Joel Mogena scored the win pitching four innings in relief. He allowed one run and struck out two opponents.

Cardenales de Lara continues to fight for the finals

The Lara club has no margin for error and must win their remaining games

By Jesus David Castellano

January 17, 2023

With the victory last Monday over Tiburones de La Guaira by a score of 8-6 at the Estadio Universitario in Caracas, Cardenales de Lara took a breath of oxygen and is still alive in this Round Robin; no margin for error, but at the end of the day alive and with remote chances of reaching the finals.

The options for the team is to win the four remaining games to aspire to finish the semifinal round playing for .500, but they also have to hope that Tiburones or Leones lose those four remaining games, and that Magallanes and Tigres do not reach eight wins; that is the ideal scenario for the "red birds".

Of all their participation in postseason instances, this has been the most complicated for Lara which has not had the torrid hitting of past seasons, and where they have even had mishaps and had to deal with casualties such as Jermaine Palacios.

For their part, despite the fact that pitching has not worked at all, their collective ERA (4.25), although their intermediate relief has generated many headaches and defeats that the coaching staff and management did not count on.

Now, after Tuesday's rest day, the Cardenales face the Leones in Barquisimeto. There they won one of their two games in the particular series against the llions in this tournamentl, which for now favors those led by Carlos Mendoza 2-1.

But first, the Lara contingent will sit down to see how the standings change for Wednesday's games, where one between the Lions and the Sharks will have eight wins and will be almost out of the reach of the Cardenales, who must continue betting on the parity that has reigned in this Round Robin.

Tiburones 7-5, Leones 7-5, Navegantes 6-6, Tigres 6-6, Cardenales 4-8.

Magallanes came back and got back into the fight

The Turks managed to win their third consecutive victory and were one game away from first place

By yelimar requena

January 16, 2023

The defending champion is alive. Navegantes del Magallanes came from behind and beat Tigres de Aragua 5-3 on Monday to even their record at 6-6 and get fully into the fight for a ticket to the final.

In a fiery José Pérez Colmenarez from Maracay, the Navigantes managed to string together their third consecutive victory to tie the Bengalis' record and stay just one game behind the leaders Leones and Tiburones (7-5).

Tigres cracked opener Erick Leal early and went ahead with a couple of runs, between the second and third innings, due to doubles by Denis Phipps and Alexi Amarista. Later, they scored one more at the end of the fifth with a home run by Carlos Tocci.

But they could not do anything more against the Magallanes relief corps.

Magallanes, started their comeback on a solo home run by Robinson Chirinos in the top of the fifth making it a 2-1 ballgame. The Tigers scored one in the bottom half of the inning. Magallanes turned the score around scoring three in the sixth now a 4-3 score in favor of the Navegantes. The always opportune Alberth Martínez and Edwin García combined to put the score at 4-3.

Already in the ninth, David Rodríguez put the icing on the cake with a single in the center to expand the lead with an insurance run.

Robert Zárate (1.0), Ángel Acevedo (0.2), Alexandro Tovalin (1.0), Anthony Vizcaya (0.1), José Martinez (1.0) and Wilking Rodriguez (1.0) combined to shut out the Tigers in the last five innings, in which they only allowed two hits.

Alberth Martínez, who has had a discreet Round Robin, was the best hitter for the buccaneers, finishing 3-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.

Finally, the victory went to Robert Zarate (1-0), the save for Wilking Rodriguez (2) and the setback for Yender Cártamo, who allowed three runs in three innings of relief.

Tiburones 7-5, Leones 7-5, Navegantes 6-6, Tigres 6-6, Cardenales 4-8.
