Giants of Cibao defeated Navegantes del Magallanes 8-7 in extra innings and close as leader in the Caribbean Series preliminary

Hanser Alberto defined the game with a sacrifice fly allowing Melky Mesa to score

Feb. 01, 2022

Hanser Alberto hit a sacrifice fly and the Gigantes del Cibao of the Dominican Republic defeated the Navegantes del Magallanes of Venezuela 8-7 in a 10-inning game, which exceeded five hours of play, began on Monday and ended on Tuesday.

With that victory the Giants win the preliminary round of the Caribbean Series . In the last 10 years, these teams had met 13 times, not including this game, with the Venezuelan teams getting the better of it.

By rule of the Caribbean Series , in extra innings, each team leads the inning with a runner running at second base. The Giants placed Melky Mesa at second base (for Ronald Guzmán). Webster Rivas sacrificed Mesa to third. Richard Ureña was intentionally walked and José Sirí was hit to load the bases.

It was Alberto's turn, who hit a sacrifice fly to right field and Mesa scored to close the game that began at 8:00 pm on Monday and ended at 1:19 am on Wednesday. The run was allowed by Danny Rondón. Venezuela did not take advantage of its opportunity with a good relief from Fernando Abad.

“You can't trust it, you can never trust it, no matter what inning you're in,” Alberto said. "We got the game that was important."

The shortstop of the Dominican team asked that the support he saw from their fans in this game be repeated this Wednesday, when they will play the semifinal. "We hope that tomorrow's game the fans will attend and give us their support," he said.

The game was won by Fernando Abad and Danny Rondón lost.

This duel was another classic and there was no room for more drama at El Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal. It is not for less, it was the game that defined the leader of the preliminary phase of the 2022 Caribbean Series .

The Dominican Republic had to recover after a dramatic comeback by Venezuela, when they came from behind 6-0 and even took the lead in the game.

It is about two countries that every time they face each other, they write a game full of tension and nervousness, this time the Dominican team navigated without problems, until a seventh and eighth innings when Venezuela recovered from a 6-5 deficit' Venezuela took the lead in the top of the top of the eighth inning 7-6. The Dominicans reacted to tie the game 7-7 in the bottom half of the eighth inning. The Dominicans scored the winning run in the bottom half of the tenth inning for the 8-7 win.

El Quisqueya welcomed a team from Venezuela as if it were a local team due to its enormous turnout in the stands, which not in one, but on several occasions overshadowed the Dominican fans. As the Venezuelan team continued respond, the more their fans drowned out the Domincan fans in a special way in the seventh and eighth, with the rally of five runs in the seventh and another two more in the eighth that put the Navegantes in a 7-6 lead. That changed in the bottom of the eighth with the Giants tying.

Giants starter Albert Abreu pitched 4 2/3 innings of six hits and struck out two. Frank Garcés and Ryan Kussmaul kept the shutout. Huascar Brazobán and Luis Santos left without the same fortune, after they were unable to get at least one out.

The Dominican team scored two runs in the second inning against Henry Centeno. Marcell Ozuna was walked leading off the inning and after one out, Kelvin Gutierrez doubled into left field to put the runners in scoring position. Juan Francisco shot a single to the right meadow, scoring Ozuna and Gutiérrez equally due to an error by first baseman Pablo Sandoval. 0-2

In the fifth, also against Centeno, the Giants scored their third run, after one out, Richard Ureña singled to right field and then scored after a José Sirí triple to center field. 0-3

In the sixth, Carlos Paulino, with two strikes, hit a double to left field against José Manuel Martínez, with which he drove in Henry Urrutia and Gutiérrez. The runs were charged to Zárate, who opened the inning allowing singles by Urrutia and Gutiérrez.

Richard Urena, who hit a huge foul with home run distance, kept the bat alive and singled to center to drive in the Giants' sixth run. 0-6

In the seventh, Huascar Brazobán entered to pitch for Ryan Kussmaul and got into trouble by allowing the first two batters, Gabriel Noriega and Alejandro de Aza, to reach base, both on singles to the right field and moved to scoring position on a “passed ball” by Carlos Paulino. Niuman Romero followed with a single allowing Noriega to score, leaving runners at the corners. 1-6

Manager Luis Urueta did not sleep, who replaced Brazobán with Luis Santos. Williams Astudillo continued the onslaught by drilling a single to center batting in De Aza from third base. With men on second and first, Danry Vásquez walked and the bases were loaded. Rafael Balbino continued with a double, scored by Romero and Astudillo. It was all for Santos, replaced by Luis Felipe Castillo. Pablo Sandoval grounded out from second to first but Vasquez scores and Balbino moved to third. Ángel Reyes hit a fly ball to right field, Balbino tried to score but was thrown out at the plate on right fielder Henry Urrutia's shot. 5-6

The Navegantes maintained their offensive rhythm in the eighth, when Astudillo singled off Reymín Guduán to tie the game at six and Danry Vásquez followed with another hit that scored Romero to give Venezuela a 7-6 lead. 7-6

In the bottom of the eighth, Hanser Alberto shot a sacrifice fly to the right field and drove in Gustavo Núñez, to even the game 7-7.

Colombia shows that they must be taken seriously
They arrived in Santo Domingo with 10 defeats in two editions

but in 2022 they are already in the semifinals and even beat the Dominican Republic at home.

February 1, 2022

Santo Domingo. With 10 losses in a row in the last two Caribbean Series, nobody seemed to have high expectations with the representation of Colombia in this edition.

Even in the South American country itself, they were very low.

“Before coming here, everyone in Colombia talked about just winning a game” , recalled the manager of the Caimanes de Barranquilla, José Mosquera.

But his message to the players was a very different one.

“I told them we couldn't be mediocre. That we couldn't come thinking about one game”.

And the message reached the members of the Caymans.

In the first phase, Colombia was the major surprise by validating their ticket to the semifinals with three wins in five games, including a resounding 2-1 victory against the Gigantes del Cibao of the Dominican Republic. And one of their losses, against Mexico, was 1-0.

“The victory against the Dominican Republic was the most significant, beating a roster of 27-29 players with experience in the Major Leagues. It is something to highlight”, Mosquera pointed out before the 6-2 setback against the Criollos de Caguas on Tuesday.

Colombia is not even close to matching the Dominican team.

Of the 30-player roster, there are 18 Colombian players, eight Dominicans, two Venezuelans, one American and one Taiwanese. And of the 18 Colombians, only six of them are active in organizations in the United States, including one with experience in the Majors in the figure of infielder Harold Ramírez , with the Chicago Cubs.

There is another former major leaguer in outfielder Dilson Herrera .

Meanwhile, Venezuelan catcher Sandy León , with 10 years in the Major Leagues, is also part of the Caymans' team.

“For us, being among the top four (teams) is already a triumph. Regardless of who is the champion, we feel like champions with what we have done , ”said Mosquera, who manages in the minor league with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.

Mosquera, in turn, hopes that this performance will have an impact on the development of baseball in his country.

“The only large stadium we have is the Edgar Rentería (with 12,000 seats). The others are not prepared for this level and sometimes we have a hard time finding a place to train. We have had to do it even in soccer stadiums,” said the manager of the Colombian team.

"Baseball has been growing a lot in our country, but we still have a long way to go."
“Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday's success or put its failures behind and start over again. That's the way life is, with a new game every day, and that's the way baseball is.”

The power of the Barranquilleros returned in the third inning, when first baseman Reynaldo Rodríguez hit a solo home run to left field. 0-5

For Colombia, Rodríguez hit a home run, scored one run and drove in another and Arroyo batted in three runs and scored one to be the most outstanding offensive players. The Venezuelans had in Fuenmayor, two hits, their best man at bat.

Caimanes is serious: finalist of the Caribbean Series

February 2, 2022

An impeccable performance by starter Elniery García, a triple by Carlos Arroyo that drove in three runs and a solo home run by Reynaldo Rodríguez came together to give Caimanes an 8-1 victory over Navegantes del Magallanes (Venezuela) and an historic passage to the finals of the Caribbean Series.

Only in its second participation in this contest, the Colombian team will dispute the title this Thursday against the Gigantes del Cibao (Dominican Republic).

Caimanes, who had 11 hits, achieved their second victory over Navegantes in the Caribbean Series. In the first round they also defeated the Navegantes 6-1.

Carlos Arroyo, Harold Ramírez, Reynaldo Rodríguez, Andrés Angulo and Sandy León had two hits each. The rest was from the Taiwanese Tsung Che Cheng.

Elniery Garcia spent six and two-thirds innings on the mound and was the winning pitcher. The Dominican left-hander allowed only a double by Balbino Fuenmayor in the sixth inning, giving up four walks and striking out two batters.

Reynaldo Rodríguez made it 5-0 in the third with a solo home run to left field off Guerra.

The Caimanes' bombardment continued in the fifth. Carlos Martínez hit into a double play to second, but drove in the eighth run off Ramírez's legs.
