Robinson Canó was 2-4, with a triple and three RBIs, while Raúl Valdés threw a good ball and the Dominican champions Gigantes del Cibao defeated the Puerto Rican champions Criollos de Caguas 5-3, in the closing game of the second day of the Santo Domingo 2022 Caribbean Series , which is held at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium.

Valdés (1-0) only allowed a couple of hits and one run in 5.2 innings of work, allowing three hits, with one walk and five strikeouts and the Dominican Republic won its second game of the tournament, improving its record to 2-0.



In the first inning, Robinson Canó hit a triple that drove in Hanser Alberto, while Marcell Ozuna hit a sacrifice fly to bring Canó to the plate and put the game 2-0 in favor of the home team. 0-2

The Puerto Ricans reacted in the sixth, David Vidal had a 2 out hit and Danny Ortiz followed with an RBI single the first run by Criollos, causing Valdés to leave the mound. 1-2

He was replaced in the box by Ryan Kussmaul, who snuffed out the threat and kept the visitors at bay, with the game 2-1. The American was followed by Huáscar Brazobán (7th), Luis Castillo (7th).

In the seventh inning, with the bases loaded and two out, Cano hit a 2 run single and the lead increased to 4-1 the Dominican lead. 1-4

But in the eighth, Vidal hit a 2 run homer off Reymin Guduán to bring it within 4-3. Jhan Maríñez entered to throw and was in charge of extinguishing the threat. 3-4

In the bottom half of the 8th, Marcell Ozuna opened with a hit and advanced to second on a passed ball. Henry Urrutia grounded out to the infield and Ozuna moved to third. Moisés Sierra lined out to third and Ronald Guzmán's infield hit drove in Ozuna, putting the game 5-3. 3-5

In the ninth, Juan Minaya did his job, retiring all three batters he faced to record the save.

Havana.- THE HURRICANES of Mayabeque today took the lead in the 61st National Baseball Series, beating the Gallos de Sancti Spíritus 8x2 and taking advantage of the setbacks of the Matanzas and Pinar del Río teams.

Offensive of 10 hits, among those three doubles, a triple and a home run off starter Yasniel González; and the pitching work of three pitchers guided the Mayabeque team to their third win of the tournament without the shadow of a setback, the only undefeated team in the championship.

González went 2-for-3 with a home run, an RBI and another run scored. Left fielder Alexander Pozo went 2-for-4, with a double, and scored once.

For the losers, catcher Yunior Ibarra connected 2-2 with a run scored and designated hitter Fréderich Cepeda 2-3.

From the mound reliever Yulián Quintana got his first victory of the championship, giving up no runs in 4 1/3 innings. He only allowed two hits, giving up one strikeout and two walks.

The opener Antonio Baró allowed the Sancti Spiritus two earned runs, giving up four ihits, the same number of walks in 1.2 innings

Marlon Vega pitched the last three innings without a run and with just two singles allowed, three walks and two strikeouts and the save.

José Luis Braña in relief, allowed three runs, two hits and the same number of walks in a third inning.

The Matanzas Crocodiles lost 3-5 to the Ciego de Ávila Tigers, in what was their first loss in the league after four wins. Thus they fell to second place in the standings half a game behind the Hurricanes. The win went to the third reliever Kevin Soto and the loss to Armando Dueñas.

Despite the failure of his team, shortstop Erisbel Arruebarrena excelled offensively, batting 3-4, with a double and a run scored.

The Vegueros de Pinar del Río dropped to third place with three wins and one loss, losing 0-5 to the Avispas de Santiago de Cuba, who also have a 3-1 record. The 2004 Athens Olympic champion, Danny Betancourt, achieved his first victory of the fight after working six innings. Relief pitcher Yoandri Monteroregistered his first save by throwing out the remaining innings.

The Pinar del Rio resorted to eight pitchers, but the disaster fell to starter Yasiel Zambrana, who allowed three earned runs and five hits in 4.1 innings.

Santo Domingo Dominican Republic. January 30, 2022.- Pitching duel in which Colombians and Mexicans got involved to begin the actions of the third day of activities. Game defined by way of the home run, Félix Pérez decided it with a homer in the second inning.

Félix Pérez's shot opened the scoreboard, a powerful homer to right field to put Mexico ahead 1-0. It was the only run of the game, a shot that gave Mexico the first victory of the Latin American series. This was Colombia's first loss in this edition.



The game only saw 9 hits between both teams, which speaks of the picture that the pitchers duel painted. Just one walk from Colombian starter Porfirio López to Mexican third baseman Agustín Murillo.

Wilmer Ríos (1-0) was the winning pitcher, throwing 6 2/3 innings of three hit and five strikeout baseball. Enrique Burgos followed with one inning and a third. Roberto Osuna (1) closed out the game by retiring Columbia in the ninth inning in order.

Porfirio López (0-1) started for Colombia with five innings of four hits, one run and four strikeouts. Juan Isaías Díaz retired the the three batters he faced in the sixth, Randy Consuegra retired the seventh in order. Yaramil Hiraldo two thirds and Ronald Ramírez one third.

Santo Domingo – Puerto Rico fell into the hole after suffering their third loss in a row this Sunday and, although they are not yet eliminated, their chances of advancing to the semifinals seem slim.

The Criollos de Caguas offense was silenced in a 4-2 loss against the Navegantes de Magallanes of Venezuela in the continuation of the Caribbean Series at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium.

Puerto Rico is the only team without a win in the tournament. The South Americans improved their record to 2-1.

Tomorrow, the Puerto Ricans will face the Charros de Jalisco from Mexico at 3:00 pm with the obligation to emerge victorious and depend on other results to have any chance of sneaking into the top four.

In addition to beating Mexico, Puerto Rico will need to overcome Colombia on Tuesday in the last day of the first phase and also that Mexico, Panama and Colombia lose their remaining commitments to opt for a tie.

Until today, Sunday, the Dominican Republic is 2-0, Colombia and Venezuela are 2-1 each, Panama is 1-1, Mexico is 1-2 and Puerto Rico is 0-3.

For the second game in a row, the Criollos fell behind early on the scoreboard. The Navegantes attacked right-hander Yordy Cabrera with two runs in the second inning.

With Balbino Fuenmayor and Pablo Sandoval on base, Francisco Arcia singled to right to drive in both runners. 2-0

The South Americans added another run in the third against Cabrera, when Alberth Martínez doubled to left, scoring Williams Astudillo and adding to the frustration on the Puerto Rican side as they fell behind 3-0.

But the Criollos responded with two runs in the third to close the scoreboard, thanks to a single by Emmanuel Rivera with two outs. Rivera found Nelson Velázquez at third base and Edwin Díaz at second base and hit to center raised the spirits of the Puerto Rican fans in the stands. 3-2

The Navegantes returned to the attack in the fourth inning when the Puerto Ricans' new pitcher, Ricardo Vélez, seemed headed to close the inning without any problems. He struck out the first two batters, but then Niuman Romero singled and walked Astudillo, setting the stage for Danry Vazquez's double that drove in Romero to increase the lead, 4-2.

After this, the relief of the Puerto Ricans did not allow any more runs in the arms of Braden Webb and Alexis Díaz.

José Sirí and Hanser Alberto motorized the Dominican offensive on Sunday so that the Dominican champions Gigantes del Cibao defeated the Panamanian Astronautas de los Santos 7-3 , to close out the day of the 2022 Caribbean Series , which is played at the Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal.

Sirí hit a triple and scored two runs, while Alberto went 3-4, with a couple of RBIs, for the third Dominican victory in the series.

Likewise, it became the 15th consecutive victory for teams from the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series , a historical record. The streak began in San Juan 2020, after losing the third game of that series.



Cuban starter Yunesky Maya worked five innings in which he allowed only four hits and two runs, with one walk and three strikeouts, but came out without a decision in the match.

The win went to reliever Ryan Kussmaul (1-0) with a one-run inning of relief.

The loss went to Wilfredo Pereira (0-1) as he was charged with three runs without getting an out, allowing one hit and four walks.

It was the second loss for the Panamanians, against a victory in the Series.

In the second inning, Daniel Jiménez hit a single that drove in Christian Bethancourt and advanced to second on an error by Marcell Ozuna. Eduardo Thomas added another hit and Jiménez scored as the Astronauts took a 2-0 lead. 2-0

In the third, Carlos Paulino led off the at-bat with a double to right field and José Sirí added an RBI triple to center field. 2-1

Hanser Alberto added a double that drove in Sirí to tie the game. Robinson Canó received a walk, while Ozuna grounded out shortto second, but Alberto scored the go-ahead. Henry Urrutia hit into a double play to close out the inning and leave the game with the Giants winning 3-2. 2-3

The Panamanians tied the game in the top half of the seventh inning, when Olmo Rosario grounded out pitcher to first, driving in Johnny Santos. 3-3

But the Dominicans struck again in the bottom half of the seventh, when Hanser Alberto hit a double that drove in Gustavo Núñez, Ozuna walked with the bases loaded and so did Kelvin Gutiérrez. 3-6

In the eighth, the Dominicans manufactured another run, with a double by Robinson Canó that drove in one. 3-7

For the Giants, Alberto went 3-4, with two RBIs. Sirí tripled and scored two. Gutiérrez and Ozuna batted in runs.

For the Astronauts, Olmo Rosario and Daniel Jiménez had one RBI each.

Santo Domingo – A two-run homer by Ángel Reyes in the top of the sixth inning and a great performance by their relievers were enough for the Navegantes del Magallanes of Venezuela to defeat the Astronautas de Los Santos of Panama on Monday 2-1 and secure their pass to the semifinals of the Caribbean Series .

The Venezuelans picked up their third victory in a row after losing on the opening day.

Panama, who surprised Puerto Rico with a victory in their debut , lost their third game in a row and has complicated their aspirations to reach the next round. They will face Mexico on Tuesday.

With the game tied 0-0 in the top of the sixth, Danry Vázquez singled after one out and Reyes homered to left field to put the Venezuelan Navegantes ahead. 2-0

Panama tried to react in the lower part of the sixth. Joe Deluca and Christian Betancourt had back to back hits to open the attack. After Freddy Fermín grounded out to the pitcher, with which Deluca was put out at third base, Eduardo Thomas walked to load the bases and Trey Hair responded with a sacrifice fly to drive in the only run for the Panamanians in the meeting. 2-1

“Very happy with the victory, this is a team that never gives up, we had very good pitching today and we must stay positive and continue winning games” , said Reyes.

Henderson Álvarez (1-0) pitched three scoreless innings in relief to win the game. Bruce Rondón scored his second save of the series by covering an inning with two strikeouts.

“It was a very important victory, we came here to compete, regardless of classifying, all the games are important and tomorrow we are going to go out and win against the Dominican Republic,” said Navegantes pilot Wilfredo Romero.

José Molina (0-1) took the loss after giving up two runs in 1 2/3 innings.

“It was another game in which we competed, but we couldn't make our chances to win the game,” said Panamanian manager Raúl Domínguez. "Today we had good pitching, but we couldn't get the job offensively."

"Tomorrow we are going to go out with everything against Mexico and wait for results to see if we can get to the semifinals," he added.

Santo Domingo.- Puerto Rico was eliminated this Monday from the Caribbean Series after suffering its fourth consecutive setback with another poor offensive display.

The Criollos de Caguas became the first team to fail to advance to the next stage of the tournament, after being whitewashed 5-0 by Mexico's Charros de Jalisco at the Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal.

With a mark of 0-4, the Puerto Ricans will end their participation tomorrow, Tuesday, by facing Colombia at 10:30 am

The last time a Puerto Rican representation failed to qualify for the semifinals was in 2019 in Panama, when it finished with a 0-4 mark. It was with the Cangrejeros de Santurce.

Here in the Dominican, Ponce's Leones were winless in six games in 2004.

Mexico, with the win, improved its record to 2-2. Venezuela and the Dominican Republic are already in the semifinals. Colombia with 2-1 and Panama with 1-3 are still alive.

The Criollos' offensive debacle spilled over into this game. In the first five innings they left seven men on base and just went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

In the fifth inning they left the bases loaded, when the third batter Emmanuel Rivera and the fourth David Vidal were eliminated without being able to capitalize failing to bring anyone to the plate.

Prior to the game, Puerto Rico only had two hits in 20 at-bats with runners at third or second base . The frustration enveloped the players in the dugout and the few Puerto Rican fans in the stands. They were unable to produce offensively in the first four games of the tournament, beginning with a painful 3-2 loss to Panama.

Today, from the first inning, the enthusiasm of the Puerto Ricans seemed to fade when their rival scored two runs. For the third game in a row they fell behind first. They already felt the pressure to wake up offensively and never did despite the roster changes.

Los Charros wasted no time attacking right-hander Óscar de la Cruz. José Cardona led off with a single and left-hander Jesús Quiroz found a pitch to his liking homered over the left field wall. 2-0.

The attack of the Aztecs continued in the third inning with another two runs extending the lead 4-0 and causing the departure of Oscar de la Cruz.

With runners on second and first base, Víctor Mendoza hit a double down the first base line, driving in Cardona. And immediately, Japhet Amador singled to bring Quiroz home with the Charros' fourth run. 4-0

The Aztecs closed out the scoring in the top of the sixth inning. After one out Perez singled to right. Salazar singled to left and Perez to third. Murillo singled to left and Perez scored. 5-0

De la Cruz only completed 2 1/3 innings and gave up four hits with four runs to carry the loss.

For the Charros, starter Nick Stuck completed 5.2 innings and gave up five hits without runs. He won the game.

[ WoW! What a revolting development Puerto Rico's appearance in this series turned out to be! I can't believe anyone could have predicted an 0-4 record and quick exit. First team to be eliminated. That has to be a tough pill to swallow for the players and fans alike. ]

Colombia overcomes the undefeated Dominican and causes triple tie in first

The Colombian Caimanes de Barranquilla overcame the undefeated Dominican Gigantes del Cibao by winning 2-1 at the end of the fourth day of the Caribbean Series that is played at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal stadium.

Dominican right-hander Fernando Pérez, who has not pitched in organized baseball since 2019, dominated the Quisqueyan bats for five and a third innings on four hits and only one run with a walk and four strikeouts to take the lead for the coffee growers.

Then four relievers came to the mound and limited the mighty Dominican bats to two hits. It is the first Colombian victory in its history in the Caribbean Series against a Dominican team.

The result causes a triple tie for first place between Colombians, Dominicans and Venezuelans, with a mark of 3-1. This Tuesday at the close of the fifth and final date, Venezuela and Dominicans face each other in a clash that can define the occupant of the first position.



The three teams are already classified for the semifinal, but the order in which they will face the other that will advance remains to be determined. The first place occupant will face the fourth on Wednesday and the second against the third.

Reynaldo Rodríguez and Brayan Buelvas each drove in a run that the South American team needed to defeat the Caribbeans, who went 1-6 with men in scoring position and left seven on base.

The South Americans opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Rodriquez walked. Angulo grounded into a fielder's choice. Rodriguez was safe at second on Cano's error. Cabrera sacrificed Rodriquez to third and Angulo to second. Buelvas hit a sacrifice fly to left. Rodriguez scored. 1-0

The Colombians scored another run in the third. Tsung-Che Cheng led off with a single, stole second, reached third on a hit to left by Harold Ramírez and Reynaldo Rodríguez hit an RBI shot to left. 2-0

The Quisqueyans countered in the sixth. With one out, José Sirí doubled to left, Hanser Alberto was walked, which ended Pérez's job. Juan Díaz came on to pitch, whom Canó received with an RBI hit to the right. But Marcell Ozuna struck out, Gutierrez was walked and Juan Francisco closed the inning with a groundout to second. 2-1

Santo Domingo. Ramón Vázquez left the Quisqueya Stadium relieved today, Tuesday. He felt the pressure that his team would be successful in the last game of the first phase of this Caribbean Series and avoid leaving in 'coca'.

And his wish was fulfilled.

The Criollos de Caguas defeated the Caimanes de Barranquilla of Colombia 6-2 to win take their first victory in five games, thanks to a brilliant start by left-hander Luis Leroy Cruz who completed seven innings and conceded one run with five hits.

The Puerto Rican team failed to advance to the semifinals after losing their first four games with a poor offensive performance.

"At least, we finished on a good note," said the Puerto Rican leader at the press conference in better spirits.

“I am happy with today's performance and it was good for the players' self-esteem. They were able to win a game”, added Vázquez.

Puerto Rico avoided repeating the history of 2019 when the Cangrejeros de Santurce lost all four games in the first round in the 2019 edition. On that occasion, Vázquez guided the Cangrejeros to the winter league championship, but did not coach in the Caribbean tournament .

“As a fan I suffered that we didn't win in Panama. I couldn't go to the Caribbean Series and it was hard as a fan to see what happened. And I couldn't imagine living the same as a leader. I didn't want to go through that. I'm happy... at least we don't have the burden of going 0-5”, said Vázquez.

Cruz had the best start among all Puerto Rican starters in the tournament. He was the only one who completed seven innings. He fanned eight.

“I have no words to describe Leroy's work,” Vázquez said, also highlighting Nelson Velázquez's pinch-hit single with the bases loaded in the fifth to extend the lead to 4-1.

“It was a tremendous hit. It helped us catch our breath,” he continued.



Puerto Rico was also able to capitalize on an error by the Caymans defense to score another two runs in the sixth inning.

Colombia finished 3-2 and will play Wednesday in the best four round.

The right-hander Javier Solano limited his rivals to two hits, without runs, in six innings and the Mexican Charros de Jalisco qualified this Tuesday for the semifinals of the Caribbean Series by whitewashing the Panamanian Astronautas de Los Santos 1-0 and eliminating them.

Charros joins Gigantes del Cibao, from the Dominican Republic, in the semifinals; Navigators of the Magellan, from Venezuela; and Caimanes de Barranquilla, from Colombia.

Solano, relentless, scored the victory (1-0) that leaves the record of the representative of Mexico at 3-2 after having started with two successive defeats. He gave two walks.

Enrique Burgos, Jake Sánchez and Roberto Osuna put the remaining zeroes on the board at the Quisqueya Stadium in Santo Domingo. Osuna saved for the second time in this Caribbean classic.

'El Pony' Esteban Quiroz drove in the only run of the game in the fifth inning.

José Cardona, with two outs, took first base on a walk. He stole second base and ended up reaching third on a throwing error by catcher Freddy Fermín. Quiroz batted in Cardona with a hit to left field. 0-1

Navegantes and Gigantes close the day, starting at 8:00 p.m. local time to decide the semifinal games.

In the first hour, Caimanes lost 6-2 against the Puerto Rican Criollos de Caguas, who said goodbye to the tournament with a single victory.
