Venezuela has always disappointed. The Dominican is always a good bet. I liked Venezuela's resilience in the playoffs. They seem to be well rounded enough to win this tournament. I'll go with Venezuela.

Under this six-team format, I don't think there are any tie breakers.

Hi Seagull,

You would need a playoff under your conditions.

If you look at the previous page, calendar of games, I don't think you would have a playoff.

Puerto Rico starts the Caribbean Series with a loss to Panama

January 28, 2022

Santo Domingo - The Criollos of Puerto Rico started the Caribbean Series with a 3-2 loss to Panama at the Quisqueya Stadium in the Dominican Republic.

An RBI single by Edgar Muñoz with runners at first and second base left the Puerto Ricans sprawled on the field.

The second game of the Criollos will be tomorrow, Saturday, against the host Dominican Republic starting at 8:00 pm

The Puerto Ricans' first run came in the fourth inning after two outs against starter Harold Araúz. After retiring the first two batters, Araúz gave Emmanuel Rivera and Vimael Machín back-to-back walks.

Then designated hitter Roberto “Bebo” Pérez singled to center to bring Rivera to the plate, lifting the spirits of a handful of Puerto Rican fans in the stands.

And with runners on second and first base, the Criollos threat ended, as Jonathan Morales lined out to second to close out the inning. 1-0

Venezuelan right-hander Nivaldo Rodríguez started for the Criollos and had a solid opening. In five innings, Rodríguez allowed no runs and only gave up two hits. The only time he was in trouble was in the very first inning when Panama placed runners in the corners with two outs. But Rodríguez tightened his arm and ended the Astronauts' threat. He had no decision.

Rodríguez also had the defensive support of his teammates. Shortstop Edwin Diaz and right fielder Danny Ortiz, especially, made defensive gems, supporting Rodriguez's management from the mound.

Rodriguez was relieved by Braden Webb in the sixth inning and the American didn't allow a score. And then Ricardo Vélez completed the seventh without major problems.

Panama tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, with Olmo Rosario's solo homer off right-hander Fernando Cruz after two outs. Then Christian Bethancourt brought the tiebreaking run to the plate with a hit. 1-2

Caguas did not sit idly by and countered, leveling the score at 2-2 thanks to an error by shortstop Eduardo Thomas on a grounder by Pérez with runners on the corners, who brought one run to the plate.

But then Caguas quickly fell into trouble allowing two men to get on base with only one out, and then the hit by Muñoz to right field against reliever Alex Diaz. 2-3

Colombia beats Venezuela in the premiere of the Caribbean Series

Jan. 28, 2022

The Colombian Caimanes de Barranquilla sent a strong message about what they are looking for in the Caribbean Series with a four-run rally in the fourth inning to win 6-1 over the Venezuelan Navegantes del Magallanes.

Seven pitchers combined to limit Magellan's bats to just four hits and one run. With the wood, the offense downloaded 14 hits in Quisqueya stadium in the second game of the six-country tournament.

Luis Moreno (1-0) got the win by taking the mound in place of starter Eduard López, who could only cover 1 2/3 innings. Moreno threw an inning and a third of shutout ball, allowing no hits.

The four run 4th inning began to indicate the direction of Caimanes.

Carlos Arroyo drove in Brayan Buelvas with a single and Harold Ramírez did the same with Taiwanese Tsung-Che Cheng. Reynaldo Rodríguez, who played with Magallanes in the last season of Venezuelan baseball, as well as in the 2018-2019 campaign, crowned the rally with a hit to left scoring Arroyo and Ramírez. 4-0

The fifth inning brought in one more run.

Venezuelan Major Leaguer Sandy León continued to punish the Navegantes, of his country, with a hit to the left that scored Mauricio Ramos. 5-0

And in the eighth inning, Brayan Buelvas batted in Daniel Angulo. 6-0

Magallanes avoided the shut with a run in the ninth: Ángel Reyes tripled and scored on a fly ball by relief pitched Francisco Arcia.

In the first game, Astronautas de Los Santos (Panama) dominated Criollos de Caguas (Puerto Rico) 3x2.

Giants of Cibao start triumphantly in the Caribbean Series by beating the Charros of Jalisco

Jan. 29, 2022

Robinson Canó drove in two runs in the 3-2 victory of the Gigantes del Cibao (Dominican Republic) over the Charros de Jalisco (Mexico) to debut with a win in the Caribbean Series. ( EXTERNAL SOURCE )

The Gigantes del Cibao (Dominican Republic) reacted at the right time to defeat the Charros de Jalisco (Mexico) 3-2, at one o'clock this morning, in order to triumphantly start their first game of the 2022 Caribbean Series , which is played at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium.

It was a day in which the Dominican Robinson Canó drove in two runs, the main one after two outs in the decisive seventh for his country.

Both teams scored in the first inning and the Charros went ahead in the third with one more. But a two-run attack, scored after two outs, in the top of the seventh gave the Giants a 3-2 lead over the Charros, who up to that point had been sailing smoothly thanks to their pitching.

Tyler Alexander, of the Dominican team, pitched three complete innings, two turns, both earned while his Mexican rival, Brennan Bernardino threw five innings and a third innings.

The rest of the work was in the hands of the relief pitching and it was the one from Mexico that staggered in the seventh by allowing the two runs, which gave the Giants the advantage and later the victory. The Dominicans used eight pitchers and the Mexicans six.

The game was won by Luis Felipe Castillo (1-0), saved by Juan Minaya (1) and lost by Jared Wilson (0-1).

The Dominican team loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but did not score and in the bottom of the ninth, the Charros had a man at third with two outs, but Minaya got the scoreless inning and the save.

The Giants scored first after one out on Hanser Alberto's triple to center field and scored on Robinson Canó's grounder to second. 1-0

The Charros' response came immediately, after two outs. Joey Meneses singled to left field and moved to second on pitcher Alexander's wild pitch. Japhet Amador singled into left field to tie the game. 1-1

Jalisco took the lead in the bottom of the third, also after two outs and against Alexander. Jesús Quiroz doubled to left and another “wild pitch” came from the pitcher with which Quiroz moved to third base to later score on Meneses' single to left field. 1-2

In the top of the seventh, the Giants responded with two to take the lead off two pitchers. The inning was started by Jared Wilson, who entered for David Gutiérrez. Moisés Sierra begins the attack with a double to the left field and Jordany Valdespín (entered for Wilín Rosario) received a walk. Wilson struck out Webster Rivas and José Sirí reached base on a fielder's choice in which Valdespín was out a fielder's choice to short and left men in the corners.

In that situation, Hanser Alberto hit a soft line drive over short and Sierra scored, again runners on third and first. It was all for Wilson, replaced by Samuel Sazuelta to face Robinson Canó, who hit a strong ground ball between second and first at the first pitch and Alberto scored the go-ahead run. 2-3
