Taiwanese teams given OK to allow fans into baseball games

TAIPEI – As coronavirus cases dwindle in Taiwan, baseball fans will be allowed back into stadiums on Friday evening, though with a cap on numbers.

Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center agreed on Wednesday that starting Friday, the Chinese Professional Baseball League could admit up to 1,000 fans per game. The four-team league has played in empty stadiums since the beginning of the season on April 12.

"If all goes well, we'll gradually increase it to 2,000 to 2,500 per game," Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung told Kyodo News.

The CPBL was the first professional baseball league in the world to start the 2020 season amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Beginning at 6:35 p.m. local time, the Rakuten Monkeys will face the Chinatrust Brothers in Greater Taichung, central Taiwan, and the Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions will take on the Fubon Guardians in New Taipei.

Priority ticket access for the games was given to season ticket holders and club members.

Spectators will be required to follow stringent measures in compliance with the health ministry's recommendations for mass gatherings of more than 500 people outdoors.

Fans must have their temperature checked at the gate, wear a face mask at all times and practice social distancing at the games.

Testing is not required for players, but if there is one confirmed case in the league the entire season will be put on hold. Players have been advised to cut down on taking holidays or going on outings.

"We're taking one step at a time," league commissioner John Wu told Kyodo News.

Taiwan's baseball league, which had been filling stands with robot mannequins and cardboard cut-outs so far this season, has attracted attention as organized sports worldwide cancel or delay competition.

Major League Baseball in the United States canceled its spring training and postponed the start of the season. Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball first pushed the March 20 season opener to April 10, then April 24, and now NPB has no target date.

Sports broadcaster Eleven Sports Taiwan brought live Taiwanese baseball to fans globally, streaming the Rakuten Monkeys' home games on its Twitter account with English commentary.

Korean baseball is back, but 'bizarre.' Here's why Blue Jays fans should be paying attention

The KBO opened its season on Tuesday; no fans, spitting or handshakes are allowed

(air high fives allowed] :P

Baseball fans pining for the return of the Toronto Blue Jays should expect a very different on-field product if and when the 2020 season begins.

That's among the biggest takeaways by Jee-Ho Yoo, a sportswriter covering the professional baseball season in South Korea after Major League Baseball (MLB) delayed its 2020 season.

The KBO League held its long-delayed opening day on Tuesday, giving the world one of its first glimpses of the strange version of professional sports that will exist amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In Korea, the familiar sights of singing fans and packed stadiums have been replaced with rows of empty seats, mask-wearing umpires and players forbidden from spitting or shaking hands.

"I don't know that I'll ever get used to covering sports games without fans," Yoo told CBC Radio's Metro Morning on Thursday from Seoul.

"It is very bizarre."

The 10-team KBO League is considered the second-best baseball league in Asia, after Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball. The league is well known for its raucous fans, cheerleading squads and tradition of audacious home-run bat flips, some of which could make even Jose Bautista blush.

Yoo had originally planned to spend a few days of the 2020 season in Toronto, covering the Blue Jays and all-star pitcher Hyu-jin Ryu, who joined the team in December after signing a four-year, $80 million contract.

He elected to stay in South Korea after MLB delayed its 2020 season in March.

MLB is reportedly progressing with contingency plans to salvage its season, including the possibility of playing games exclusively in select cities where teams and staff could be quarantined from the general public.

Toronto Mayor John Tory says preliminary discussions have started with the Blue Jays and Raptors on a potential return to play in the city, but there are no details or target dates. None of North America's major professional sports leagues have said when play could resume or if fans will be permitted in stadiums.

A new survey by Angus Reid suggests most Canadians are unlikely to attend live sports this year even if it becomes possible.

When asked if they would attend a live event in October or November if given free tickets to watch their favourite team, only 28 per cent of respondents said they would do so.

A third of the respondents said they would not attend, while another 40 per cent said they would have to think twice about it.

South Korea's example may be hard to follow

The public health situation in South Korea has also made the return of professional sports somewhat easier than it may be in North America.

While South Korea at one point had the second-most COVID-19 cases in the world, it has since been widely commended for suppressing the virus through its robust system of testing, contact tracing and a strong public buy-in to mitigation efforts.

Yoo noted that South Korea's approach remains strict — schools, for instance, are not scheduled to open until next week — but the return of baseball has given its population a much-needed sign of hope.

"At least we have the league going, we have baseball action," he said. "This is one of the surest signs that life is returning to normal in Korea."

Taiwan's professional baseball league was the first Asian baseball league to resume play on April 11, and says it will allow up to 1,000 fans to attend games starting on Friday. Nippon Professional Baseball has not yet set a return date.
Image

What should MLB fans expect?

While MLB has not yet laid out firm conditions for its own return to play, Yoo said the KBO offers a few clues about what games could look like.

With empty ballparks, he said players have scaled back their on-field chatter and trash talk, which has been getting picked up on broadcasts.

(ESPN is airing live KBO League games in the United States, but no Canadian broadcaster is offering the games here.)

"There's a bit of a gentlemen's agreement between teams, I think, that they've got to tone down a little bit," Yoo said.

"Even the managers, they've joked about how they shouldn't argue with umpires so much any more because whatever they say might get picked up on TV."

But the KBO template could be harder to replicate in a league three times as large, and where 29 of the 30 teams play in the country with by far the most cases and deaths attributed to COVID-19.

Yoo said it could be more difficult to ensure MLB teams and players follow the strict guidelines in place at the KBO.

"There's a lot of adjustments for these players and teams to have to make," Yoo said.

Baseball: Taiwan pro ball to admit 2,000 fans to games

KYODO NEWS KYODO NEWS - 15 hours ago - 21:50 | Sports, All, Coronavirus

Taiwan's Chinese Professional Baseball League said Thursday its teams can admit up to 2,000 fans to games from Friday while most of the world's sports remain idled by the new coronavirus pandemic.

The CPBL, which opened its season on April 12 behind closed doors, began allowing up to 1,000 fans to attend its games last Friday. Taiwan's government has now given the go-ahead to admit larger crowds.

With the risk of infection considered low in Taiwan, stadiums will be able to sell food and beverages from Friday. Families will also be allowed to sit together provided they do not sit next to other spectators.

Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball and Major League Baseball in the United States and Canada have no concrete dates yet for the start of their 2020 seasons, while South Korea's Korea Baseball Organization began playing behind closed doors on May 5.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC WINS 2021 CARIBBEAN WORLD SERIES

By Guest

Updated: February 11, 2021

By Ismael Nunez

I called my editor, Peter from
“Baseball Reflections” and told him that the 2021 Caribbean World Series was taking place. He stated proudly, “Wow great I thought with Covid 19 hitting a home-run, I thought no series.” Then this reporter’s mother stated proudly, “In Latin America when there is a crisis what better way to entertain the people, than in Music, Food, Baseball.”

This year marked the 63rd edition of the Caribbean World Series. The series took place from January 31 to February 6, 2021 at Estadio Teodoro Mariscal in Mazatlán, Mexico. The six countries participating were: Colombian Professional Baseball League, Dominican Professional Baseball League, Mexican Pacific League, Panamanian Professional Baseball League, Puerto Rican Professional Baseball League, and Venezuelan Professional Baseball League.

Yet Aguilas Cibaenas winners of the 2020-21 Dominican Professional Baseball League would end up as champions defeating team Criollos de Caguas Winners of the 2020-21from the Puerto Rican Professional Baseball League defeating them by a score of 4-1.

For the Dominican Republic it would there 21st time of winning the Caribbean World Series.

As for Covid 19 according to Wikipedia reported: “Spectators were allowed to attend games, though the stadium only operated at 45% of capacity due to COVID-19 restrictions. Face coverings and socially distanced seating guidelines were enforced.”

Despite the restrictions all of LATIN AMERICA was a winner at the CARIBBEARN WORLD SERIES 2021.

Mazatlan 2021 Caribbean Series ended with the Dominican Republic as the champion

The Águilas Cibaeñas achieved their sixth 2021 Caribbean Series championship when they defeated Puerto Rico's champion team, Criollos de Caguas, in a dramatic final game to conclude what was overall a competitive tournament with many possibilities for all participating teams.

Undoubtedly, all eyes on the 2021 Mazatlan Caribbean Series were on four factors: COVID-19, Robinson Canó, Yadier Molina and Águilas Cibaeñas of the Dominican Republic.

Faced with the criticism at all levels of holding the Caribbean Series at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has the entire world in check, the Caribbean Confederation of Professional Baseball and the Organizing Committee brought the event to a successful conclusion. During the event, there was only one official announcement of a player who tested positive for COVID-19 and two who unofficially were isolated and did not participate.

Canó and Molina, both with more than 15 years of Major League experience, World Series winners and All-Star Game participants, were the top stars who participated in the tournament and showed their humility on and off the field in front of the fans. The Águilas Cibaeñas made their championship historic, both for the team, for the Dominican Republic as a country and for their manager Félix Fermín.

Overall, in front of less than 45% of the total capacity of the Estadio Teodoro Mariscal for each of the games, the first Caribbean Series with three games a day and six teams held in Mexico concluded with an undefeated champion.

Covid-19 and the uncertainty of contagions

Although Mazatlan has not reached the red light, and with well-marked protocols for teams and fans, the Caribbean Series started on January 31 with 5,157 fans at the opening and third game at night according to the official, although videos and photos appeared on social networks denouncing that the protocols were not followed. The event went on without having more than 6,000 fans at a game until the semifinal on Friday night, when 6,509 fans entered and were well distributed in the seats.

The entrance to the stadium was rigorous, taking the temperature of each person who entered, marking the number of gates accredited to the event and even for the players who arrived late, who only had access to the stadium through the bus entrance, as several could not enter through other gates when they were returned, Jonathan Camargo, from the Dominican Republic, was one of them.

Jaime Barría, the pitcher of the Federales de Chiriquí, was the only player who officially tested positive for COVID-19 and he made it public in his social networks.

Pitcher Andres Machado, who was replaced in the roster of Venezuela by Gabriel Lino, and outfielder Rafael Ortega, were isolated in their hotels according to unofficial voices of the confederation, but without being made official by Caribes de Anzoategui, their league, or the confederation.

Robinson Canó and Yadier Molina

The two great figures of the event, Robinson Canó and Yadier Molina, were not only "horses" on the field, but off the field and in front of the fans they demonstrated their humility despite individual Major League careers of more than 15 seasons. And both did not disappoint, as they were named to the Ideal All-Star Team, Canó as a second baseman and Molina as a catcher.

Although he batted just .192 in seven games, Molina was able to carry the pitching in three games in the regular round to lead Puerto Rico to the Final, where they lost in a great duel 4-1 to the Dominican Republic. He hit a pair of doubles, delighted the fans with a home run and drove in three runs.

For his part, Canó started off hot with six hits and three passports in his first 12 plate appearances, and ended up batting .368 in six games played, with seven hits -- all singles -- one run batted in, six passports and only one strikeout in 19 legal innings. Fans sought them out and at all times received their attention from both players, to get their signatures on balls, cards and other items.

Águilas Cibaeñas and Dominican Republic

On the field, there was only one protagonist, the Águilas Cibaeñas of the Dominican Republic, once again led by Félix Fermín, who perfectly won the championship with a heart-stopping victory in the semifinal.

The Aguilas are the first team to win the series undefeated with a 7-0 record, the Dominican Republic as a country leagues successive titles for the first time in 2007 and 2008 and leaves alive a streak of 12 consecutive victories.

Félix Fermín made history by breaking the record of most wins for a manager in the Caribbean Series with 28, passing the 22 of the Mexican Francisco "Paquín" Estrada and the Puerto Rican Mako Oliveras, and he is the first with 7-0 in a single game.

For the first game in their territory in the 2022 Caribbean Series, the Dominican Republic will be looking for another record they own: 13 consecutive victories with the last five of Toros del Este in 2020 and the seven of Aguilas in 2021.

Total attendance

The COVID-19 pandemic caused an atypical Caribbean Series in Mexico, where there is always a full house at the main game every night. This time the maximum capacity of 45% allowed at the Teodoro Mariscal Stadium - 7,200 people - did not even reach its limit.

Admissions for the night game each day were 5,157 on day one, 5,584 on day two, 4,915 on day 3, 5,029 on day 4, 5,520 on day 5, 6,509 in the semifinal and dropped to 4,003 in the Final.

Attendance per day was 7,800 on January 31, 8,368 on February 1, 9,381 on February 2, 6,925 on February 3, 8,684 on February 4, 10,385 on February 5 in the semifinal and 4,003 on February 7 in the Final.

A total of 55,546 fans attended the 18 games of the series, an average of 3,085.8 per game. For the first game in the five days of the three games played, the best entry was recorded on day 1 with 761, and for the second game the best entry was on day 3 with 4,066.

Caribbean Series: The Dynamic Finale

By Oscar Kropifko

February 8, 2021

n a classic matchup seen before and certain to be seen again, the representatives of the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico met in the championship game of the Caribbean Series Saturday night.

Easily the best two clubs in Mazatlan, the Cibao Eagles and Caguas Creoles finished first and second in the round-robin opening pool, advanced out of the semifinals over the Federals and Tomato Growers, and met for the title.

A Pitcher’s Duel in Early Innings

The Caribbean Series finale began as a defensive contest, with both team’s starters pitching well, fielders backing them up deftly, and a home plate umpire keen to call low fastballs as strikes. Caguas’ Hector Hernandez (one earned run, two hits, one walk, and seven strikeouts) and Cibao’s Cesar Valdez (one earned run, four hits, two walks, three strikeouts) demonstrated commanding stuff through four innings before losing their goose eggs in the fifth.

Runs Scored

The Creoles nearly scored first, advancing runners to second and third on a well-placed sacrifice bunt in the top of the third. MLB veteran Yadier Molina stepped up to the plate with two outs, but he popped out to right, failing to bring his teammates home. He would go hitless in the game. In the fifth, Caguas made good on its earlier threat, as Jarren Duran singled in Juan Centeno after his own hit and advancing on a wild pitch. Johan Camargo evened the score for the Eagles with a home run to left in the bottom of the inning.

In the sixth inning, Caguas fell victim as an unfortunate limitation of the series took its toll. Always conscious of pitch count, Hernandez was removed in favor of reliever Anthony Maldonado, who promptly surrendered two earned runs in two-thirds of an inning. Juan Lagares and Ronald Guzman drove in the runs with a double and single, respectively. Guzman added insurance in the eighth with a home run off Fernando Cruz to guarantee a Caribbean Series victory.

Ramon Torres continued his excellent performance in the series, going two for three with a walk and a run scored. He finished with a .556 on-base percentage. Robinson Cano went hitless in the title game, but he still led the Caribbean Series in batting average and on-base percentage.

Caribbean Series Leaders

Lagares claimed the home run title, with two in the series. Duran, however, had more total bases and Julian Leon led in slugging percentage. The Caimans went winless, but pitcher Edison Frias held the series strikeout lead with nine over 7.2 innings pitched. Among pitchers with five or more innings pitched, the Tomato Growers’ Anthony Vasquez led in earned run average at 1.29, while Valdez and Caribs’ ace Williams Perez led in walks plus hits per inning pitched at 0.333.

With the victory, the Eagles move into sole possession of second place all-time in Caribbean Series titles (6). Though crowd size was restricted to prevent the spread of Covid, this series featured the usual, exciting fare: late-inning comebacks, national pride, and stiff competition. The same six leagues are likely to send representatives next year to the newly-named host, the Dominican Republic.

Happy & Safe New Year All!

It's been a while. Hard to tell the players without a scorecard.

Looks like a boatload of young talent waiting in the wiings. Time to get excited again?

I haven't been in these winter ball folders in three years. God! Has it been that long?

It's playoff time in the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.

The first stages are over. The team are entering the final portions of the playoffs. The Caribbean series starts in February.

Some Indian, er, Guardian (?!?!?!) notes. Don't know if I'll ever get over that one :(

Franmil Reyes will play in Dominican winter league to build reps in OF, learn from Albert Pujols

Before Cleveland slugger Franmil Reyes pulls on a new Guardians jersey in March, he’s going to play a little winter ball in his native Dominican Republic. Cleveland manager Terry Francona told reporters Friday that he talked with Reyes earlier this week and the 6-foot-5, 265-pound outfielder is going to play a few games for Escogido BC in the Dominican Winter League.

Here's how prospects are doing in winter ball

Brayan Rocchio, SS/2B, Tiburones De La Guaira (Venezuela)

CLE No. 7

We won't go so far as to say Rocchio's play down in his native Venezuela fueled his addition to the Guardians' 40-man roster, but it certainly didn't hurt. The 20-year-old switch-hitter produced a .391/.440/.594 line with nine extra-base hits in 17 games for La Guaira. He struck out and walked at an even pace (five times each) in his 76 plate appearances, while seeing time at both short and second. Rocchio had two homers and six RBI before shutting it down for the rest of the year. His final game with the Tiburones came on Nov. 17, two days before Cleveland added him to the 40-man and asked him to be taken out of winter league play. His 1.034 OPS remains seventh-best among Venezuelan Winter Leaguers with at least 75 plate appearances.

Shorstops Brayan Rocchio and Jose Tena seem like keepers. Rocchio, a switch-hitter, batted .277 (122-for-441) with 15 homers, 63 RBI and a .806 OPS for Lake County and Akron. He’s currently playing winter ball in Venezuela, where he’s hitting .426 (26-for-61) with two homers, six RBI and a 1.125 OPS.

<

The bats answered

The game went down a single path early on, it pointed to the coast. Junior Guerra was immediately backed by his teammates. The first run was driven in by Juan Carlos Torres with a hit to the LF to bring Jairo Pérez to the plate, who had reached base with a double in the second act.

In the next inning, the fired-up Brayan Rocchio singled Maikel García and later Danry Vásquez hit a home run down the line to right field to make it 4-0 and give the Anaheim Angels pitcher more peace of mind.

THE KIDS ARE DOING WELL

11/02/2021

Image

The Venezuelan Professional Baseball League is mostly known for being a circuit of veteran players. "You don't win here with boys" is a very popular phrase when someone refers to Venezuelan baseball.

However, the Tiburones de La Guaira are creating a new thinking by having a good number of prospects well regarded by Major League Baseball, who are transmitting security and confidence on the field of play.

The sharks, bathed in the youth of their promises, obtained their third consecutive victory of the season by defeating the Navegantes del Magallanes 5 races to 1 at the University Stadium in Caracas. They celebrated their fourth win of the tournament and now play for .500 (4-4) in the standings.

Today's victory was led by the offensive performance of rookies Rafael Marchán and Brayan Rocchio, who shone with the wood by hitting solo homers.

The "kids" gradually begin to engage with the veterans of the club, who, together with Daniel Mayora and Teodoro Martínez, were also productive today with an RBI each.

The production complied today, backing the impeccable work of imported starter Myles Smith, who shone in his performance by pitching four innings of only two hits, three strikeouts and two walks, in what was his debut on our circuit.

From the very first episode, the litoralenses began their journey to victory with an RBI double by Daniel Mayora, who brought Brayan Rocchio to the plate.

In the third there was a wild pitch by Erick Leal that allowed Rocchio to score again. The next batter, Rafa Marchán hit a home run to right field, which was also his first hit in his LVBP career.

“It was a nice feeling. Debuting like this with all the teammates and the family present is something special. My father kept the home run ball”, were Marchán's statements after the commitment.

The catcher was an offensive figure, but he also excelled on defense by petrifying four runners who tried to get from first to second base during the game, three of them on a steal attempt and the last one due to a deflected pitch.

The relievers also shined today as they combined for five innings of just one run. Jean Cabrera, Aldry Acosta, Gregory Infante and Arnaldo Hernández paraded down the mound, maintaining the team's lead.

Acosta was the winner (1-0), while Erick Leal took the loss (0-1).

<

WE LEAVE THEM!

05/11/2021

After Greene flied out the first out, Junior Sosa was hit by a pitch and Brayan Rocchio singled to extend the at-bat to Danry Vasquez, who fired a thunderbolt that shot the waiter and allowed the tying run to score in the legs of Jesus Lujano, pinch runner for Sosa.

The Lara Cardinals will go against the Anzoatigui Caribes for their sixth final in a row

The Cardinals have been hot in the decisive series of the LVBP.

Lara has participated in the last five finals, winning two consecutive titles (2018-2019 and 2019-2020), and has not given up on its aspiration to go to a final instance for the sixth time.

Lara, who has a record of eight wins and six losses have that possibility in their own hands, but first they will have to overcome a tough obstacle.

Sunday, the Cardinals conclude their participation in the Round Robin facing the Caribes de Anzoátegui, the hottest team at the moment, who defeated the Cardinals in the first two playoff games at their own home in Antonio Herrera Gutiérrez de Barquisimeto on January 10 and 11 by scores of 4-3 and 5-2, respectively.

Criollos de Caguas and Indios de Mayagüez will determine the champions from in Puerto Rico

The two teams with the longest tradition in the Roberto Clemente Professional League of Puerto Rico will be the two finalists for this 2021-2022 season.

These are the Criollos de Caguas and Indios de Mayagüez, who after beating Cangrejeros de Santurce and Gigantes de Carolina, respectively, will battle in the best of seven series and thus look for the new champions of the league.

For Criollos and Indios it will be their second consecutive final, after Caguas won the highest honors in the 2020-2021 season.

On this occasion, the Criollos team hopes to revalidate their title, which would be No. 20 in their history in Puerto Rican baseball.

For their part, Mayagüez hopes to break the drought of titles and thus win their first crown since the 2013-2014 contest and thus match Criollos as the teams with the most championships on the local circuit.

Both teams will fight from this weekend to see who takes the crown.
