GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- On Monday, the Cleveland Indians hosted the San Diego Padres for a spring training matchup in Goodyear, Ariz.
As it turns out, that may not have been the only contact between the two teams.
According to Ken Rosenthal of MLB on FOX and The Athletic, the Padres remain interested in acquiring one of the Indians' starting pitchers, particularly Corey Kluber or Trevor Bauer. San Diego -- among other teams -- had been linked to Kluber and Bauer earlier this offseason, before trade talks seemingly died down following the team's arrival in Goodyear.
Nevertheless, it appears the Padres remain interested, with Cleveland having reportedly lowered its asking price for one of its top two pitchers. In December, Jon Morosi of the MLB Network reported San Diego was a "strong contender" to land Kluber, with the Indians interested in the Padres' ability to provide Major League in a potential deal.
San Diego outfielders Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe and catcher Austin Hedges had each been mentioned in potential trades with the Indians this past offseason.
But while those same talks may have resumed, a deal remains far from imminent. Per Rosenthal, Cleveland's asking price remains beyond the Padres' comfort level, with a deal between the two teams unlikely to occur between now and Opening Day next week.
Plenty, of course, can change between now and then and even this late, the Indians' roster remains a work in progress. With Cleveland reportedly close to signing 3-time All-Star Carlos Gonzalez, it's clear the Indians are still looking for outfield help -- and may still be willing to deal from their surplus of starting pitching to do so.
